9. The geo-technical investigations results at the site shows that the sub-soil
strata from existing ground surface to 20.4 m depth consists predominantly of
fine grained soils i.e. sandy silt of low plasticity (CL/ML-CL). However, the
sub-soil strata from depth 2.50 to 5.00m consists predominantly of coarse
grained soils i.e. silty sand (SP-SM). The depth to bed rock at the site is more
than 300m b.g.l.
10. The quality of the groundwater shows: (I) Lead concentration values exceed
0.05 ppm in 1 U/s, 4 D/s locations, (ii) Hardness values exceed 600 ppm in 8
locations (5 D/s, 3 U/s), (iii) Fluoride values exceed 1.5 ppm in 2 U/s, 2 D/s
locations, (iv) TDS value exceeds 2000 ppm in 3 U/s, 5 D/s locations.
11. Based on 50 years rainfall data, average annual rainfall is reported to be
905.32 mm.
12. Based on monitoring of ambient air quality at the site for 3 days (24 hours
continuously), concentration of SPM, SO x and NO x at the site were in the
range of 145 - 160, 1.6 - 1.8 and 1.5 - 2.1 ug/nm 3 respectively. The presence
of the SPM, SO x and NO x in ambient air quality is well below the prescribed
national Ambient Air Quality standards for industrial areas/residential areas.
13. While carrying out excavation and construction of the landfill, periodic water
spray has been recommended in order to suppress dust.
14. Based on the findings of EIA studies, the above project can be considered as
less polluting project
15. The leachate generated secured landfill facility will be collected systematically
in the collection pit and will be pumped to the Treatment Plant for further
treatment before disposal into environment.
16. To prevent soil erosion after closure of the facility, vegetative cover will be
developed on top of the liner system.
17. Green belt will be developed surrounding the secured landfill facility in order
to abate air & noise pollution and to reduce the storm water drainage.
18. The development of this facility will facilitate the systematic collection,
storage, handling, transportation, processing and disposal of the hazardous
wastes generated from 28 approved industrial areas/estates in Delhi without
effecting the surrounding environment. This would result in improvement in
the general environment within the region.
19. Development of secured landfill facility for disposal of hazardous wastes will
involve many activities as described in the report. This will increase the
opportunities of employment for the local people, which is a positive aspect of
the project.
20. Continuous monitoring of ground water and ambient air during operation and
closure of landfill facility is recommended to be carried out in the surrounding
Environment Division, National Productivity Council, New Delhi
