and construction activities
After implementation of proposed EMP and mitigation measures, the disposal of
hazardous waste at the recommended site shall be considered as environmentally
sound process as it will take care of the following:
• Ground water and soil protection through the provisions of an impermeable base
of the facility, lined drain and disposal of non compatible waste in different cells.
• Surface water protection through diversion of surface run-on and installation of
leachate treatment plant.
The Environmental Impact Statement for the site at Guman Hera is as given below:
1. The total area of the site is reported to be 56 hectares (140 acres). However,
the area required for developing SLF for 20 years is only 26.35 hectares. The
land has been acquired by Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Govt. of NCT -
Delhi.
2. The site lies in the salt affected area with scattered shrub grass vegetation,
amidst patches of brick Kiln relics and small temporary water pools. The site
falls in structural sag zone. It is located in wastelands within a dominantly
agricultural landuse.
3. There is no human population within 1 km distance of the site. The nearest
village is Guman Hera, which is 1 km away. The site is adjacent to a
"Gaushala" (Cow shelter). However, there is no regular use by inhabitants in
the Gaushala.
4. The nearest surface water body is Najafgarh drain, which is about 500 m
away from the site.
5. The groundwater table is available at 4.5 m b.g.l. The base of the landfill
should be atleast 2 m above the groundwater table. So a Double Composite
Liner system is proposed to be installed at the bottom of the landfill to prevent
the percolation of leachate to the ground water. The quality of water at this
level is however, saline. The fresh water aquifer in this area is available at a
depth beyond 35 m bgl.
6. As reported, the proposed site does not fall under any notified forest.
7. There is no navigable river or stream within the 100 m distance of the site.
8. As reported, the proposed site does not fall under flood prone area of the
Yamuna River. Therefore, developing the secured landfill facility at the
proposed site is not having the risk of flood.
