Rapid EIA Studies of 3 Pre-identified Hazardous Waste Disposal Sites in NCT - Delhi Page No.174 Thickness = 60 cm (minimum) Co-efficient of permeability = 10 -7 cm/sec (maximum) 6.1.3 Essential Facilities to be developed for Secured Landfill Leachate Treatment System The following two alternatives are considered for leachate treatment: Off-site treatment of leachate: This involves storage, pre-treatment and transportation of leachate to off-site treatment facilities e.g. common effluent treatment plant, municipal sewage treatment plant. Onsite Treatment of Leachate: This involves complete treatment of leachate at the landfill site to meet the general standards for disposal of wastewater into inland surface water body. As the site is 30 - 40 km away from approved industrial estates/areas and no municipal sewerage system exists in neighbourhood of the site, the option of treating the leachate in a off site plant is not feasible. Therefore, complete leachate treatment plant has to be designed within the facility for treating the leachate before discharging to Najafgarh drain. Surface Water Drainage System In order to divert the storm water from entering into the facility, therby minimising the quantity of leachate generation, surface water drainage system is essential. The surface water drainage system comprises of the following components: • Storm water drains and diversion channel • Storm water basin • Culverts The storm water basin is designed based on the precipitation value. The post closure plan should provide care for an extended period of time after closure such as for at least 30 years. This is an arbitrary time period, which can be lengthened (or) reduced depending on the technical information related to post closure pollutant migration. The following aspects shall be taken into consideration for the closure of the facilities: - Environment Division, National Productivity Council, New Delhi 7
