Rapid EIA Studies of 3 Pre-identified Hazardous Waste Disposal Sites in NCT - Delhi Page No.166 Site I: Bawana Relocation Industrial Area Area available: 6 hectares Major Negative attributes (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) (v) (vi) This site falls within the groundwater recharge zone of western Yamuna canal. The groundwater water table varies from 0.75 to 4.5 m bgl. There is fresh water aquifer available at 30 - 40 m bgl This poses the risk of potential groundwater contamination. It is located 15 - 25 Km away from the major waste generating industrial estates. Therefore cost of transportation of waste would be high. Permeability of sub soil ( upto 4 m) ranges from 4.1 x 10 -6 to 6.7 x 10 -7 cm/sec which is comparatively high. A High power tension line passes over the site. This limits the height of the landfill and thereby reduces the life of the landfill facility. Also required permission have to be obtained from DVB/Power grid Corpn. for development of the landfill facility. The area available is sufficient for development of landfill facility for 3 years. The site is adjacent to 60m wide highway (under construction). Major positive attributes (i) The site is located in the proposed Bawana relocational industrial complex. It is located away from the major settlements in the region. Thus posing low impact on human beings. Site II: Wazirpur CETP Site Area available: 1.3 Hectares Major Negative attributes (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) The site is located within a very thickly populated area. The total area of the site is too small. It is sufficient for developing a landfill facility of 1 year life. The site is within 500 m from railway line. Permeability of soil is comparatively high (1.8 x 10 -4 to 8.3 x 10 -7 cm/sec). Major Positive attributes (v) The groundwater is available below 13.5 m bgl. The groundwater quality is saline and has hardness exceeding the drinking water standards. Environment Division, National Productivity Council, New Delhi 7

Rapid EIA Studies of 3 Pre-identified Hazardous Waste Disposal Sites in NCT - Delhi Page No.167 Site III: Guman Hera Site Area available: 56 Hectares Major Negative attributes (i) (ii) The site is located at 30 -40 Km away from major industrial estates which will increase transportation cost. Permeability of sub soil is high (4.5 x 10- 4 to 6.3 x 10- 6 cm/sec) Major Positive attributes (i) (iii) (iv) Area available is large enough for developing a facility for more than 20 years The site is far away located from major settlements in the region. The fresh water is available below 30 - 40 m bgl. Site IV: Old Bawana Site Area available: 60 Hectares Major Negative attributes (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) The site is under protected Forest land. Hence, cannot be considered. The site is in groundwater recharge zone by western Yamuna canal. Also it has shallow groundwater table. The site is within 500m from Bawana - Narela road. Permeability of the soil is comparatively high ( 5.1 to 32.4 x 10 -7 cm/sec). Major positive attribute (i) The site has sufficient land area for developing a landfill facility for more than 20 years (stockpile design has to be adopted because of shallow groundwater table) Based on the MOEF ranking system and International evaluation criteria, Site III i.e Guman hera site has been found most suitable and is therefore recommended for development of landfill facility. The second best site is site II that can be developed for only 1 year. However, due to non-consideration of the environmental impacts in the planning aspects of the sites there may be some existing environmental impacts due to the process. These environmental impacts will be mitigated through implementation of proposed Environmental Management Plan and mitigation measures.
