Section I
Philosophy and Mission
This handbook provides comprehensive information about the purpose, policies and
operation of St. John Brebeuf Regional Catholic Secondary School (SJB). It is intended
to help you, as parents, understand the workings of our school and how you can use the
school and its resources in meeting your parental responsibilities as the primary educators
of your children.
Please familiarize yourself with the contents of this handbook. Please bring any errors or
omissions that you find to the attention of the SJB school staff or SJB Education
Committee. With your help, future versions of the Parent – Student Handbook can
become an even better source of information.
About St. John Brebeuf
Saint Jean de Brebeuf (1593-1649), an important Canadian martyr, was born in
Normandy on March 25, 1593. He was ordained a Jesuit priest in 1623, and arrived in
New France in 1625. He lived and spread the word of God among the Huron first nations
people between Georgian Bay and Lake Huron until forced by the British to return to
France in 1629. He returned in 1634 and lived with the Hurons for the next 14 years.
The Iroquois captured, tortured and killed Jean de Brebeuf in March of 1649, at what is
now Midlands, Ontario. Jean de Brebeuf, along with other Jesuit martyrs, was canonized
a saint in the Roman Catholic Church in 1930. His feast day is September 26.
Saint John Brebeuf Regional Secondary School (SJB) is the first Catholic high school in
the central Fraser Valley. It is sponsored by, and draws its enrolment largely from seven
Roman Catholic Parishes: St Ann’s Abbotsford, St. James Abbotsford, Sts. Joachim and
Ann, Aldergrove, St. Joseph’s Langley, St. Joseph’s Mission, St. Mary’s Chilliwack and
St. Nicholas Langley. SJB began with Grade 8 in portable classroom units in September
1992, and added one grade in each subsequent year until full courses for Grades 8
through 12 became available in 1996. Construction of Phase I of the present SJB school
building began in 1993. We began classes in the new building in January, and the official
Blessing occurred on March 6, 1994. The addition of Phase II was complete and ready
for classes in September 1996, and the official Blessing took place on November 3, 1996.
The present capacity of SJB is approximately 400 students. Capacity could be increased
to 600 students if needed and the financial abilities of the Parishes are sufficient to
warrant a third phase of construction.
Parent – Student Handbook
St. John Brebeuf Regional Secondary School
SJB is established under the guidelines of the Catholic Independent Schools of
Vancouver Archdiocese (CISVA). As such, a local Education Committee made up of
two representatives from each of the participating parishes, and three pastors, elected by
the seven pastors of the participating parishes, run it. One of these pastors is appointed
Archbishop’s Representative in the school.
The local Education Committee is responsible for the day-to-day running of the school,
delegating responsibility for academic life to the Principal of the school.
The SJB curriculum is designed to meet the standards of the B.C. Ministry of Education
in a setting that emphasizes Christian values and respect and love for all of God’s
creation. Although Catholics are given priority for enrolment at SJB, students of any faith
background may be admitted if space permits. The majority of the students attending
SJB are from Catholic families, however, we also have full-time students from a variety
of foreign countries. We also accept students with special needs. We believe that this
mix of students raises the potential for SJB students to recognize the equality of all of
God’s children in His eyes, and to mirror that vision in their personal development.
Religion is a required subject in the curriculum of each of Grades 8-12. As our
enrolment grows, various electives are added to the curriculum. At present, we have a
Band and Art program available for Grades 8 through 12, Drama in Grades 11 and 12,
and a Computer program [Information Technology] is available as an elective in all
grades. A Foods program is offered for Grades 8 through 11. SJB has a strong intramural
athletic program, and does very well for a small, young school.
SJB has a talented and dedicated group of teachers who are competent in their various
subject areas and who exemplify Christian values in their roles as educators. Our staff
brings a great diversity of educational backgrounds and experiences.
Philosophy and Mission Statement
The philosophy and mission of SJB are embodied in the following statements, which are
taken from the Catholic Schools of Vancouver Archdiocese Policy Manual:
The Catholic school shares in the mission of the Church. Two key factors make
the Catholic school different:
The Catholic school is filled with the Spirit of Christ. In a Catholic school, God,
His Truth and His Life are integrated into each and every aspect of the life of the
school. The entire scholastic curriculum is permeated with the Spirit of Christ
Jesus. Teachers and other staff work towards this goal by their personal witness.
The Catholic school forms the whole person. Motivated by a Christ-centered
vision of humanity and human history, the school promotes the formation of the
whole person. Such formation embraces not only intellectual, but also physical,
emotional, moral and spiritual dimensions of human growth. Intellect, emotions,
St. John Brebeuf Regional Secondary School
creative ability and cultural heritage all have a place in the life of the school.
While human knowledge and skills are recognized as precious in themselves, they
find their deepest meaning in the context of God’s plan for creation.
This broad education prepares students for the challenges of life as adults in our multiracial,
multi-cultural world. Graduates of Catholic schools enter our fast changing
society well informed and well rooted in their Christian faith, ready to communicate and
work with all of God’s children. Committed to ecumenism and interfaith concerns, they
can respond to our common call to seek and promote truth and wisdom in service to the
human family.
Hours of Operation
Section II
Everyday Basics
School Hours: Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 2:40 pm
Office Hours: Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 3:30 pm
Notes for Absences or Late Arrivals
Be sure to have your child bring a note to the office when he/she returns to school after
being absent or late. As well, we will also need a note if your child will be leaving the
school during school hours. Notes explaining a child’s absence are required for our
government qualifying student audit. The Ministry of Education checks our records of
attendance and unexplained absences can result in a reduction in the funds provided to
the school by the Ministry.
Getting a Message to Your Child at School
As a matter of routine, arrangements for after-school transportation and activities should
be handled prior to your child leaving home. However, there may be occasions when it is
necessary to leave an urgent message for your child. In these rare circumstances, the
office staff will ensure that a message is delivered to the student.
Emergencies, Natural Disasters and Inclement Weather
St. John Brebeuf has well established emergency procedures in accordance with Ministry
of Education guidelines. In particular, regular fire drills and earthquake drills are held.
Parents are advised that in the case of a civil emergency or other disaster, notification will
be made through Abbotsford’s radio station, Star FM (107.10 FM) as well as the
Chilliwack station, Star FM (98.3 FM) and the New Westminster station, CKNW, (980
AM). Do not phone the school; listen to the radio station for instructions and
information. In the event of such an emergency, parents may be required to pick up their
children.
Should the school be closed due to a snowstorm or other emergency, the closure will be
broadcast on the above named stations, and the school will post closures on the website.
Change of Address and Phone Number
It is vital that the school has your current address and telephone information for
emergencies and everyday use. Parents must advise the school immediately and in
writing of any change in their address or residence, work, or emergency contact numbers.
Parking
For student safety and fire regulations, all visitors are expected to use the designated
parking stalls (not staff stalls). Please note that the driveway from the road to the school
is considered “NO PARKING” and is to be used by our buses only. Please respect the
handicap parking stalls. They are reserved at all times for those in need.
Parent – Student Handbook
St. John Brebeuf Regional Secondary School
Evaluation of Progress and Basis for Grading
a. Four Progress Reports
Student progress reports will be issued four times during the year: Interim reports will be
issued in November and April, final semester reports will be issued in February and June.
Each report will contain a percentage, letter grade, and skill-based comment in each of
the four areas of study. Formal parent-teacher interviews are held following the interim
reports in November and April. As well, parents may request interviews with teachers at
any time throughout the semester. Final year-end progress reports will normally not be
issued until a student pays for all textbooks, library books and fines.
b. Grading System
SJB uses a conventional grading system approved by the Ministry of Education. Grade
points will be based on an aggregate of the student’s test, assignment and project results.
An average of 80% is required in order to achieve Honors standing. The grading system
is as follows:
86 – 100% = A = 4 GPA (grade point average)
73 – 85% = B = 3
67 – 72% = C+ = 2.5
60 – 66% = C = 2
50 – 59% = C- = 1
0 – 49% = F = 0
* = I = 0
A student will receive an “I” (in progress/incomplete) grade before a failing grade (F) can
be issued. Teachers must work together with the student and parents to complete an
improvement plan following an “I” grade.
c. Evaluation Periods
The academic year is divided into two semesters both ending in formal examination
periods as described below. There will be four reporting periods; two semester-end
reports and two interim reports. Marks will be cumulative from September up to and
including the January exam. The second semester cumulative mark will include
evaluation of work from February until the final exam in June.
d. Formal Evaluations; Exam Periods
Two formal evaluation (exam) periods will occur during the year as follows:
Semester exams will take place in January and June for all students. Regular classes will
not be scheduled at this time. In addition, mid-semester evaluations will take place in all
academic subjects, and at all grade levels, and will test knowledge and skills acquired in
the first half of each semester. Grade 10 students will be required to write provincial
Parent – Student Handbook
St. John Brebeuf Regional Secondary School
exams in Language Arts (English), Math and Science. Grade 11 students will be required
to write a provincial exam in Social Studies 11. Grade 12 students will be required to
write provincial exams as determined by their course selection and future education
plans.
e. Failure to Pass a Course
Students who fail a course during the regular school year may be required to attend
summer school to upgrade their mark to a passing percentage. Summer school is
available through the Public School District. Contact the SJB office for details.
A student who fails the religious education course will be given a series of assignments to
be completed in a satisfactory manner during the summer. It will be necessary for
students to pass their religious education course in order to advance to the next grade.
Assignments may include community church service as well as course content.
f. Completion of Assignments
At St. John Brebeuf, students are expected to complete all assignments. Students who
fall behind may be required to attend regular study hall on their own time.
g. Expectations for Homework
Rationale:

Regular, systematic and effective home study is one of the greatest contributors to
a student’s success in school.
Studies have shown that to be effective, homework is best done at a consistent
time each day, and in a controlled environment
Student Responsibilities:

Record homework, assignments, projects and tests in student agenda book daily.
Finish work from the day's class.
Complete all assigned work.
Review work from the previous lessons.
Preview upcoming lessons.
Prepare for tests.
Take initiative to obtain assistance as required.
Parent Responsibilities:
Career Planning: Academic Advice
a. The Academic Advisor
The role of the Academic Advisor is to assist parents and teachers in ensuring that our
students are successful in their courses. The Academic Advisor helps students with
course selection, career counseling, post-secondary education counseling, scholarship
preparation and study skills. The Academic Advisor also assists Administration with
Ministry of Education documentation, course scheduling, transcripts and Provincial
Exams.
b. Planning 10 / Personal Health
This program is intended to contribute to the development of students in becoming
rounded, balanced individuals. It helps students to relate their school activities to their
future plans, to make appropriate personal decisions, and to manage their lives more
effectively. Topics such as anti-smoking and responsible driving (Counter Attack) are
typically included. Students will complete a Student Learning Plan.
c. Grade 12 Student Requirements
Grade 12 students must complete 30 hours of work experience, 150 minutes per week of
physical activity, and a graduation transition plan. Criteria for completion of work
experience hours will be forwarded to parents.
Scholarships and Bursaries; Passport to Education
a. Graduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards Administered by SJB
The following Graduate awards do not require an application form. Recipients will be
chosen by the Administration. Unless indicated otherwise, these awards are honours that
do not involve money.
Please Note: This is not a comprehensive list of the scholarships/bursaries we award. While many of the above
mentioned awards are presented annually, some are issued on a periodic basis only. The availability of these awards
is subject to change without notice.
b. Graduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards Administered by Other
Agencies
The Catholic Women’s League and Knights of Columbus groups of the various Parishes
have also traditionally offered awards. These awards are for students pursuing post
secondary studies and range in value from $150 - $750. Eligibility requirements vary.
These awards require an application form, which is available from the Academic
Advisor.
The Academic Advisor will inform students of the many other scholarships and bursaries
available outside of SJB. These awards are typically based on academic performance and
community/school involvement. Bursaries require evidence of financial need.
c. University/College Entrance Scholarships
St. John Brebeuf Secondary students have the same access to entrance scholarships at
colleges and universities as those students attending public schools. These awards
typically range in value from $2000 - $3000 per year and are based primarily on
academic performance. Our students have traditionally been very successful in receiving
these awards.
Parent – Student Handbook
St. John Brebeuf Regional Secondary School
d. Passport to Education
The government of British Columbia has designed a program to reward academic
performance by giving students credit towards the cost of tuition at post secondary
educational institutions. The value of passport credits is as follows: Grade 10 - $250,
Grade 11 - $250, Grade 12 - $500. The credit is recorded each year in a Passport
Booklet. SJB maintains the Passport Booklet in the student's file, and it is given to
students when they graduate. It then becomes the sole responsibility of the student to
care for the Passport and to use it appropriately.
SJB considers student involvement in academic, spiritual, social and athletic areas to be
important and desirable components of education. SJB uses a point scale that includes
student achievement in academics and other areas of development for ranking students,
according to the following guidelines:
Grades 10 - 12: A maximum of 14 points may be earned, 10 of which derive from
academic marks, and 4 of which derive from extracurricular school-based activity (2
points, minimum of 10 hours) and community volunteer activity (2 points, minimum of
10 hours). For grades 10 and 11, a student must be taking a full course load, as well as
meet Provincial graduation requirements in order to apply.
Students in grades 10 to 12 must apply for Passport to Education by June 6, 2014.
Candidates must complete a 'Certificate of Participation' by the due date. To receive the
points for community volunteer work, a student is required to secure and submit a signed
'participation form.'
Ineligibility for Passport to Education credits may be incurred by repeated or serious
discipline infraction, or failure to follow the guidelines described above.
Transcript Requests
Many students may require a transcript (a listing of their final marks for the previous
year and the courses currently enrolled in) for submission to port-secondary
institutions. Forms may also be obtained from the office. Transcript requests require five
complete school days’ notice to prepare after receipt by office staff. Please ensure that
your request for a transcript is submitted well in advance of the deadline date, as there
may be many other students requesting transcripts around the same time.
Section IV
School Policies and Regulations
Rationale
It is inherent in the SJB educational philosophy that students work to their potential to
achieve academic, physical, spiritual and social development to a level consistent with
the talents given to them by God. The purpose of school policies and regulations is to
provide an environment that fosters the development of a healthy sense of self-discipline
and personal achievement, and respect for self, neighbour and community.
a. Policy
Regular attendance in all assigned classes is both expected and required. The school
reserves the right to withdraw a student for non-attendance.
b. Absences
If a student must be absent from school, a parent/guardian must call the school office
before 9:00 am to explain the absence, or if the lines are busy, leave a voicemail. In
addition, a note written by the parent or legal guardian must be presented to the office
upon the student’s return to school. (The Ministry of Education checks records of
attendance and unexplained absences can result in a reduction in the funds provided to
the school by the Ministry. Students must attend a minimum of 135 school days to
complete funding requirements.) Students are responsible for making up work that was
missed due to absence. It is the students’ responsibility to consult with their various
teachers to find out what work must be made up.
Students are not excused from school to take day or vacation trips unless there is a
compelling reason, and advance permission is obtained from the Principal. Such
requests must be made in writing by the parent or guardian and submitted at least two
weeks prior to the expected departure. Teachers will not be responsible to provide extra
assistance to students as a result of family vacations. In addition, students whose absence
results in a reduction in Ministry of Education funding will be required to make up the
amount lost through payment of additional tuition.
c. Medical and Dental Appointments
Appointments should be scheduled at times other than school hours whenever possible.
d. Students Not in Class
Students excused to the sick room, office, library, counselor etc. must first obtain a
permission slip before leaving class.
e. Truancy
Truancy is defined as an unexcused absence from school without the knowledge and
consent of parents or guardians and the proper school authorities, for part or for all of a
school day. Truancy is subject to disciplinary action as explained in Section V. Any
school time missed must be made up by the student.
f. Tardiness
Tardiness is defined as the arrival at school after the bell at 8:30 a.m., or arrival in class
after the bell has rung. Students who arrive late for school must first report to the school
office and present explanatory notes. Then the students must wait outside the classroom,
without causing any disruption, until the teacher is ready at an appropriate time in the
lesson to admit them.
Students, who are not present and ready to begin class with appropriate materials such as
text, notebook, pens, etc., will be considered late. Repeated lateness for school will
result in lunch detentions or further disciplinary actions.
g. Off-Campus Privileges
Grade 11-12 students are permitted off campus during their lunch breaks and before
school (including late starts) once a permission slip has been completed.
Grade 8 - 10 students are not permitted off campus during lunch breaks or before
school (including late starts).
h. Field Trips
From time to time throughout the year, teachers may schedule field trips. These field
trips may form integral parts of courses. Field trip consent forms must be signed by
parents or guardians and returned to the teacher in question no later than 24 hours prior to
the day of the field trip.
i. Accidents and Illness
All accidents occurring in school or on school grounds must be reported at once to the
school office. No student is to leave the school because of an illness or accident without
notifying the office. A student will be sent home only if a responsible adult is at home.
In case of an emergency, the parent or guardian or emergency contact will be phoned.
The general health of the student, including immunization, is the responsibility of the
parents or guardians.
j. School Equipment
School equipment may only be used with staff permission.
k. Lockers
Lockers are school property and must not be marked, altered or damaged in any way.
Lockers may be opened at any time by the Administration.
l. Office Photocopier and Telephones
The office photocopier and telephones are for the use of staff only.
available right inside the school entrance for students' use.
A pay telephone is
m. Cell Phone Usage/Electronic Communication/School Computers
i) All cell phones and electronic entertainment devices must be turned off and stored
safely during school time. Any student found either using these items during class time
or with them on, will have the device confiscated for a minimum of one day and a
maximum of one month for repeat offenders. The MPX area and outside the doors of
the MPX are the only areas students may use devices while at school during noninstructional
times.
ii) The use of cell phones between parents/students and teachers, is strictly limited to
transportation and/or safety situations. Any communication that occurs outside of these
two areas must be reported to administration immediately. No student is allowed to
communicate via text messaging with a teacher at any time.
iii) Contact between teachers and students through social networking sites, such as face
book, is strictly prohibited.
iv) Parents wishing to contact teachers via email should use school email addresses only.
These can be found on the website, www.stjohnbrebeuf.ca. Students may contact
teachers via email in regards to school business only. Contacting teachers regarding class
assignments via email should only occur between the hours of 7:00 am and 8:00 pm.
Any email inquiries sent outside these hours will not be answered. (Students should also
note that emails do not require immediate response at any time).
v) School computer usage is limited to school related assignments or inquiries. School
computers may not be used to download music or videos without expressed permission of
a teacher. School computers may not be used for game play, face book type pages or you
tube without direct teacher supervision. The use of personal laptops in class is subject to
the same restrictions. Students may not access school internet on personal laptops for the
purposes of game play, music downloads and/or video downloads at any time.
n. Textbooks and Library Books
Textbooks and library books are loaned to the students by the school. The issuing teacher
will assess any damage or loss to books, and students will be responsible for the
replacement cost of the lost or damaged book. Software programs will not be loaned.
o. Lost and Found Items
Lost and found items may be turned in or claimed at the front office. Valuables should
not be left in lockers. Students are asked not to bring large sums of money to school.
The school cannot take responsibility for lost or stolen property.
p. School Premises
The appearance of the school premises reflects the respect of the students for their school,
and conveys an impression to the neighbouring community. Students are asked and
expected not only to refrain from littering, but also to take initiatives to foster a spirit of
pride in the appearance of their school.
q. Smoking Ban
Due to Provincial Legislation, which went into effect on September 1, 2007; all school
properties are to be considered no smoking zones. Be advised that it is now illegal to
have cigarettes or smoking utensils on your person on the premises.
r. Vehicles
All vehicles driven by students and parked on the school property must be registered at
the office. Please note the following information:
Students are only permitted to drive themselves to and from a school sanctioned
activity once written permission has been granted by a parent. Students will not
be allowed to drive another student to and from a school sanctioned activity when
leaving from the school. The school recommends that parents drive their children
to school sanctioned activities during the evening, or on non-school days.
Students are not permitted to park on the St. James school parking lot. They are
not to leave the school property until the end of the day.
Drivers must at all times demonstrate safe driving habits and are reminded that we
are in an elementary school zone.
Visiting student cars and their drivers are not permitted to come onto school
property to pick up students during school hours.
s. Responsibilities of Students Traveling by Bus
The general rules that apply to students’ behaviour at school also apply to bus
transportation. Students are expected to show respect to their peers and to the bus driver
who is responsible for ensuring the safety and well being of the passengers. Students are
expected to do the following:
find a place and remain seated there until the bus reaches its destination,
ensure that the middle aisle is not blocked,
behave in a socially acceptable way,
speak softly and refrain from playing music,
not open windows or emergency exit door without permission of the bus driver,
September 2013 “Bringing Faith to Life” Page 17

refrain from smoking, eating and throwing trash inside or outside of the bus,
refrain from putting their heads or arms out of the bus windows,
use the emergency exit door only in the case of an emergency,
not touch any bus equipment or mechanism whatsoever,
leave the bus one at a time without pushing and shoving, beginning with the students
sitting in the front seats.
Failure to follow the regulations or the directions of the driver will result in the
suspension of bus privileges, and possibly suspension from school, depending on the
seriousness of the offense.
Uniform Policy
a. Philosophy
The personal appearance of a student reflects an image of our school to the community.
It also has an impact on the student's attitude and behaviour, and thus the learning
process. The uniform policy is predetermined and established to engender an attitude of
respect for oneself and the school. Consistent appearance establishes standards of
modesty, neatness, good taste and cleanliness. Exaggerated haircuts, hair shaving or hair
colouring (unnatural colours) is not accepted. Extreme or outlandish makeup and fashion
accessories (including facial piercings) are not allowed. No hats may be worn in school.
The Principal will determine all standards. In order to maintain consistency of colours,
patterns, fabrics and quality, and to maximize economy, a specific uniform supplier has
been selected. Uniforms can be purchased through this supplier, MITY Wear Inc.
b. Uniforms
In accordance with the above philosophy, all SJB students are required to wear uniforms
while on the school premises and while participating in off-campus school functions,
unless instructed otherwise. In order to maintain consistency of colours, patterns, fabrics
and quality, as well as to maximize economy, a specific uniform supplier has been
selected. Uniforms can be purchased through this supplier.
All items indicated in bold must be purchased from the school uniform supply company,
MITY Wear Inc. We also allow polo shirts as supplied.
remain tucked in at all times.
While supplies last, the school polo shirt will remain an option.
Kilts are to be worn no shorter than 8 cm. (3 in.) above the floor measured when
kneeling. Shirts are to be tucked in at all times – on or off campus including lunchtime.
Students out of uniform must report to the office before first class and will be required to
serve a lunchtime detention.
The Administration reserves the right to confiscate any article of clothing or fashion
contrary to the dress code.
c. Non-Dress Code Days (Colour Days)
Permission will be given by the Administration. Uniforms are not required on these
days; however, students must wear acceptable clothing to show school spirit.
d. Interpretation and Enforcement of Dress Code and Uniform Regulations
The manner in which uniforms are worn is expected to reflect respect for self, for
classmates, and for the image of the SJB student body in the community. Consistent
appearance establishes standards of modesty, neatness, good taste and cleanliness.
Exaggerated haircuts, hair shaving or hair colouring (unnatural colours) is not
accepted. Extreme or outlandish makeup and fashion accessories (including facial
piercings and overstated ear piercings) are not allowed. Tattoos must not be visible
during school hours, including colour days. No hats may be worn in school. The
Principal will determine the standards and insure adherence to the standards and spirit of
the dress code.
e. Dress Code Violations
Students out of uniform must submit a permission note from their parents to the office
before classes begin. Uniform excuse slips will be issued for one day only. Students
without a parental note may be sent home to change into uniform, and any class time
missed must be made up after school. Staff will monitor the dress code and may send
any student who is in violation to the office. Dress code violations will be recorded at the
office and communicated to the parents. All incidents of dress code violation will result
in an in-school consequence, e.g., lunchtime detention. Students who consistently violate
the uniform policy will not be able to attend classes until the uniform is corrected. The
Administration reserves the right to confiscate any article of clothing or fashion that is
contrary to the dress code.
Please note the policy change regarding kilt length. Students who receive more than
three warnings regarding kilt length will then be required to wear the uniform pant
rather than the kilt.
Student Responsibilities and Conduct
Philosophy
Our goal is that student conduct will reflect the distinctive qualities of the Catholic
school: that the Catholic school is filled with the Spirit of Christ and that the Catholic
school forms the whole person. The whole Christian person is equipped to enter society
well informed and well rooted in Christian faith, ready to talk and work with all of God’s
children. Inherent in this goal are expectations of continual growth and development of a
sense of responsibility, and respect and love for others, for self, and for all of God’s
Creation.
Respect and Love for Others
God asks each of us to love our neighbour. Conduct that is inconsistent with this belief
will not be tolerated.
Respect for Self
"You are not your own property. You have been bought and paid for. That is why you
should use your body for the glory of God." (1 Cor.6:20)
Examples of kinds of conduct that show lack of respect for others and self are listed
below. Any student who is involved in any of the activities described below will be
suspended from the school, and may face expulsion from the school. Parents will be
notified. The police may be called at the discretion of the Principal.
a. Bullying and Harassment
Bullying and harassment occur when there is an abusive power imbalance; it is different
from conflict or arguing. Such behaviour includes but is not limited to things such as
September 2013 “Bringing Faith to Life” Page 20

Parent – Student Handbook
St. John Brebeuf Regional Secondary School
physical or verbal aggression, sexual harassment, intimidation, teasing, trickery,
discrimination, and exclusion.
Students who feel that they are being bullied or harassed are encouraged to identify the
behaviour and ask for it to stop. Students or parents are strongly encouraged to report the
incident to the school counselor, teachers or administrators. Usually, bullying gets worse
if it is not reported, and the school cannot work to resolve the problem if it goes
unreported.
b. Fighting
Fighting for any reason will not be tolerated.
c. Weapons
No student while on or near school property or at a school function may have possession
of or access to any type of weapon, including but not limited to knives, martial arts
weapons, firearms, explosives, and poisonous or corrosive substances.
d. Gang or Criminal Activity
Gang involvement, membership or activity is not an acceptable activity for SJB students.
e. Theft and Vandalism
Theft is taking the possession of another without permission. Vandalism is causing
wilful damage to the property of another. In addition to the disciplinary actions described
above that may be taken, parents are responsible for reimbursing the affected party or the
school for the cost of damages.
f. Interference
Behaviour and items that interfere with the educational objectives of the school will not
be tolerated. Examples of interfering behaviour include, but are not limited to, using
objectionable language, failing to follow directions of teachers and school staff, and
speaking in a rude or disrespectful manner or talking back to a staff member. Items that
interfere with or are inconsistent with the educational objectives of the school are not
allowed at SJB and will be confiscated.
g. Smoking
No student may smoke on school grounds or in the vicinity of the school at any time. For
a first offence, parents will be notified. For a second offence, parents will be notified,
and the student may serve an in-school suspension. Further offences may result in
suspension from school, or even expulsion.
h. Alcohol, Drugs and Other Substances of Abuse
The seriousness of offences involving these kinds of substances cannot be overemphasized,
both for the student and for SJB. St. John Brebeuf will not tolerate the
possession or usage of, or trafficking in any kinds of drugs or alcohol. Trafficking is
defined as any exchange of illegal substances. Any student found to be under the
influence of, or in possession of alcohol or drugs on or near the school property, or at a
school function will be suspended.
The Principal will immediately contact the parents/guardians of such student, inform
them of the circumstances, and request that they come to the school immediately and take
the student home. The police may be called. There will be an automatic minimum fiveday
suspension of the student from the school. If a second offence involving alcohol or
drugs occurs, the student will be expelled. Any student found to be trafficking in
alcohol or drugs will be expelled.
Section V
Enforcement of Policies and Regulations
Rationale
The objective of the discipline policy is to maintain an atmosphere conducive to the
effective operation of the school community as well as to encourage the growth of selfdiscipline
in each student. The administration of discipline is the responsibility of the
teacher, the school Administration or, in extreme circumstances, the Education
Committee as appropriate.
Reasons for Disciplinary Sanctions
The primary reason for the assigning of any disciplinary sanction such as detention,
reflective writing, community service, or expulsion is that students must understand that
certain behaviour is inappropriate and unacceptable in relation to the community we are
attempting to build and foster at SJB. All actions have a consequence either positive or
negative, and responsibility must be accepted when behaviour violates what the
community has established as the code of conduct for its members. Sanctions assigned
prior to expulsion are intended to make it clear to students and their parents that such
behaviour or other serious violations of school policy must not happen again. It is the
desire of the school that the student being disciplined will learn from the consequence
and grow to become a positive contributor to the school community. If the behaviour
does occur again, then the student is making a choice about continuing as a member of
the community.
Examples of the type of conduct requiring disciplinary sanctions are:
bullying and harassment
possession of weapons
gang or criminal activity
theft or vandalism
interference
smoking
influence of, possession of, or trafficking of alcohol, drugs or other substances of
abuse
Disciplinary Options and Actions
a. Detentions
Detentions are issued for minor infractions of school rules. Detentions are served
in the classroom of the teacher issuing the detention. Community service activities may
be assigned in lieu of or in addition to detention as reparation for minor infractions.
September 2013 “Bringing Faith to Life” Page 23

Parent – Student Handbook
St. John Brebeuf Regional Secondary School
b. Disciplinary Referral
A referral will be issued by teachers and given to the office for significant or repeat
violations of school rules. With serious or repeat offences, parents will be asked to meet
with the Administration.
The following is a joint policy statement from Principals and Pastors of CISVA
High Schools:
There will be no tolerance for serious infractions of school or CISCA policy. Any
misconduct deemed serious will always result in disciplinary action and may result in
suspension or expulsion from the school. When practicable, parents will be notified that
a suspension or expulsion is under consideration.
Suspension
A student may be suspended if:
the misconduct is serious, in and of itself and/or
the accumulation of minor misconducts warrants further disciplinary action
For a student to be reinstated following a suspension;
The student must accept responsibility for his/her misconduct(s)
The students must accept, and follow through with, consequences established by the
school
The students must demonstrate firm purpose of amendment
The parent(s) of the student must accept and support the school's disciplinary
decision(s)
Expulsion
A student may be expelled if:
The misconduct is deemed serious enough, in and of itself, to warrant direct
expulsion and/or
Previous serious misconduct(s) warrant further disciplinary action and/or
He/she does not accept responsibility for his/her misconduct(s) and/or
The student's parent(s) do not accept and support the school's disciplinary decision(s)
A student will always be expelled if:
He/she does not accept, and follow through with, consequences established by the
school and/or
His/her actions place others in moral or physical danger
The Principal has the authority to suspend or expel and does so in accordance with
section 16.0 of CISVA policy
c. In-School Suspension
Students serving an in-school suspension will arrive at school at regular time but go
directly to the office once they enter the school. They will be assigned a room in which
to complete a written assignment relating to the behaviour that resulted in the sanction
September 2013 “Bringing Faith to Life” Page 24

being assigned. The students will then proceed to complete assignments from that day’s
classes given by their teachers. They will have their break and lunch at different times
than the rest of the school population and will be restricted to campus for the day. They
will not participate in any school event including extra-curricular events that day except
for Mass or penitential services being offered.
d. Out-of-School Suspension
Serious offences of any school policy may result in out-of-school suspension or expulsion
from SJB. The Principal will give an out-of-school suspension to the student as a
consequence for well-evidenced, grave misconduct. During this time, the student may
not attend any classes, school functions, or extra-curricular activities, even if the activity
is off the school premises. Classes missed during the period of out-of-school suspension
may not be made up.
e. Expulsion
Expulsion shall only be given by the Administration after serious consideration and
consultation with the Education Committee Chairperson and the Archbishop’s
Representative. Expulsion means that the student will be prohibited from attending
school for the balance of the school year and for subsequent years unless reinstated. It
will be the parent’s responsibility to make alternative arrangements for the schooling of
the student following expulsion. The reason(s) for the expulsion shall be provided to the
parent(s) or guardian in writing and forwarded to the alternate school of the parent’s
choice.
f. Appeals
Decisions regarding out-of-school suspension and expulsion may be appealed. The
procedures for dealing with major complaints, including appeals are described in detail in
the Policy Manual for Catholic Schools in the Vancouver Archdiocese (CISVA). In
essence, the statements related to appealing a decision to expel are as follows:
"The appeal must be submitted to the Chair of the Education Committee, in writing, no
more than seven days after the Principal's decision has been received."
Upon receiving the complaint the Education Committee will form a subcommittee with
authority to make a decision regarding the appeal. This committee must always include
the school's Pastor/Archbishop's Representative.
g. Readmission to SJB After Expulsion
Expulsion is the most serious sanction a school can impose on a student for grave
misconduct. Readmission to SJB will only be granted in those instances where there is
clear and compelling evidence of a change in the perspective of the student who was
expelled that includes complete and unreserved acceptance of our school's philosophy,
policies and regulations. Each case will be dealt with individually and on its own merits.
Reasons that led to expulsion will bear heavily on whether re-admittance will be
considered or approved. Students who wish to reapply to SJB after they have been
expelled must meet the following requirements:
demonstrate an ability to achieve academically and behave appropriately in another
school, normally for a full year following expulsion.
provide reasons in writing as to why they should be considered for re-admittance and
how they have changed in their time since the expulsion.
re-enter the school under contract and on probation.
When you, as parents, enrol students at St. John Brebeuf, you are committing to the
school's philosophy of education and undertaking an obligation to give both moral and
financial support to the school. We encourage parents to become involved in the various
parent participation programs at the school.
However, in sending your children to SJB, as to any other school, you as parents do not
abdicate your primary role in the education of your children, but simply delegate some
aspects of it. SJB sees parents as the primary educators of their children. Parents are
expected to see the school as supporting, not substituting for, the faith and family life of
the home.
Parents are an essential ingredient in developing an effective school and a true Christian
community within the school. As parents you retain the responsibility of taking an active
part in your children's education by co-operating with the teachers and the Education
Committee in every possible way by upholding school discipline, by supervising
homework, by attending parent-teacher interviews and school functions, etc.
Partnership Relationship with the School
Your children are at SJB because you believe in and support the educational philosophy
of SJB. How can this belief and support be actualized
a. Development of a home-based faith life
b. Awareness, understanding and support of the school's policies in your relationship
with your children
c. Daily communication with your children about what goes on at school
d. Timely communication with the school staff about the progress of your children at
SJB
e. Presence and participation at school open houses, dances, intramural sporting events,
concerts and plays, fund-raising activities and other school functions
f. Participation in parent / volunteer committees
Vehicles of Communication
a. Your child: general conversation, agenda book, involvement and support of home
work assignments, activities and projects
Process for Dealing with Concerns
Go directly to the teacher; in most cases, the concern can be dealt with at this level. If
after discussing the matter with the teacher, it remains a matter of concern, discuss the
matter with the Principal. If the matter remains unresolved, bring the concern to the
attention of the Archbishop's Representative.
Parent Participation Policy
General
The Parent Participation Program is an important dimension of the operation of St. John
Brebeuf Regional Secondary School. An important aim of the program is to foster a
spirit of community among families working to create a better school. As an active
school community, we depend on parents to help with various school activities, including
fundraising. This involves a minimum of 12 service hours throughout the year. Those
who commit to the Parent Participation Program must submit a participation commitment
cheque in the amount of $300, dated June 15, 2013. This post-dated cheque must be
submitted to the school with the registration but will only be cashed if the family does not
complete their service hours. If you choose not to participate, you may pay the $300 nonparticipation
fee. This cheque should be dated July 1, 2012.
Participant Responsibilities
At the time of registration, participants will be required to indicate their areas of choice
for the work participation program. Participants will note that some categories may
require a trade qualification certificate, and that most require a commitment to a series of
times over the year.
Please be aware that it is the responsibility of each family to complete their service hours.
If you need hours, please contact the Parent Participation Coordinator. Service hour
opportunities are often posted in the school newsletter.
Section VIII
Extracurricular Activities at SJB
Philosophy on Extracurricular Activities
The talents possessed by each student are gifts from God, which must be developed and
shared. We believe that athletics and extra-curricular activities can greatly help that
development. All students, regardless of their level of ability, are expected to participate
in the regular physical education program as prescribed by the Ministry of Education. In
addition, all students will be encouraged to become involved in one or more of the many
extra-curricular activities and sports that the school sponsors. They will be challenged to
compete to the best of their ability and demonstrate respect and good sportsmanship.
While high school sports are competitive, winning cannot and will not be given priority
over the demonstration of sound Christian attributes before, during and after contests.
Student participants must understand that they are to be ambassadors of Christ, His
Church and His School. Failure to attend to this priority at all times may result in a
student's suspension from some or all extra-curricular activities.
Eligibility
A student who wishes to participate in an extra-curricular activity must meet the
following standards and requirements:
Demonstrate consistent academic effort and conduct, and must not permit
participation to interfere with or reduce academic progress. If, in the opinion of
teachers or coaches, participation is affecting academic standing, students may be
asked to discontinue their involvement in extracurricular activity until the situation is
remedied.
Provide written parental permission on a form to be provided by the school.
Be prepared to consistently attend practices, events and meetings.
Be prepared to arrange for transportation to and from events. Where possible, the
school will try to arrange for transportation.
Dismissal from Classes for Participation in Extracurricular Activity
Extracurricular activity must not interfere with or reduce academic progress. It will,
however, require students to miss parts or all of classes from time to time. When students
must miss or leave a class early because of extracurricular activity, they must ensure the
following:
a. Prepare for classes in the usual way. For example, if a game or activity were to be
cancelled and a test is given in a class that the student expected to miss because of the
activity, the student must be prepared for the test.
b. Complete and be responsible for all work missed during their absence from class.
September 2013 “Bringing Faith to Life” Page 33

Parent ~ Student Handbook
St. John Brebeuf Regional Secondary School
c. Remain after class on non-event or practice days to go over missed work or to make
up tests, as necessary. There are no penalties for being late for practice because of
class responsibilities.
d. Proceed to events or practices quietly and without disturbing classes in session.
Student Leadership
The Student Council will support various student activities and build school spirit. The
Council will co-ordinate events and activities in co-operation with the Administration and
staff sponsor. Council members are aware of and endorse the school's philosophy.
The Administration and Education Committee reserve the right to overrule the Student
Council in matters affecting the philosophy and policies of the school.
Fine Arts
SJB offers a variety of opportunities in Art, Band and Drama, both curricular and extracurricular.
Campus Ministries
The role of campus ministries in the Catholic high school is one of light bearer, to
illuminate with the light of Christ the hearts and minds of staff and students through the
facilitation and co-ordination of liturgy, and opportunities for spiritual formation and
social practice.
"Know that I am with you." With Christ at the centre of the Catholic school, the campus
minister points to the person of Christ and His abiding presence so that in every way the
words, actions and the life of Christ emanates from each person in the community and the
community as a whole. Campus Ministry brings the gospel message to staff and students
in liturgy, personal well-being, spiritual life and social justice. To love our neighbours as
ourselves, we must try to understand and minister to the complexity of those around us
who help us define our relationship with Christ. The role of Campus Ministry is to call
for a conversion to Christ both within the confines of the school and in the larger
community.
Other Clubs and Activities
As resources, staff and interest allow, SJB will develop clubs and activities such as the
Food Safe Course and the Photography club for example to meet the varied needs of our
students. Expressions of interest from students and parents should be addressed to the
Administration.
St. John Brebeuf Athletic Policy
Purposes of this policy

To establish qualifications for participating in athletic activities;
To provide motivation to keep academic performance high;
To aid students in balancing the various aspects of their lives;
To assist all student athletes in resolving athletic conflicts;
To identify the guidelines and expectations for athletes, coaches, and parents.
Athletic Mission Statement
As a Roman Catholic school, St. John Brebeuf Athletics provides an opportunity for its
student-athletes to further develop as Christians and become valuable members of
society.
Student - Athlete Policies
1. Regular, punctual attendance in all classes at St. John Brebeuf is essential to
participation in the athletic programs. A student-athlete who misses a class,
without a valid reason, will be ineligible to participate in the next scheduled
contest. Three violations of this policy during the season will result in dismissal
from the team. If an athlete is absent from school without justification on a
particular day, he/she may not be present or take part in athletic activities on that
day.
2. Regular, punctual attendance at all practices and games. Failure to notify the
coach will result in:
a) First Offence: Suspended from one game or practice;
b) Second Offence: Suspended from three games or practices;
c) Third Offence: Expulsion from team.
3. Without exception, athletic participants must turn in to the coach or Athletic
Director a completed Medical Form. No athlete may participate in practice or
competition until this form is completed and submitted.
4. Playing time will be as a result of:
a. Athlete’s level of ability;
b. Athlete’s commitment to practices;
c. And Athlete’s attitude.
5. All student athletes are valuable members of their respective teams. If students
have concerns regarding their position on the team or playing time, the issues
should first be taken up with their coach. If necessary, the Athletic Director may
also become involved in order to resolve the issue(s). Finally, if a player and/or
parent are not satisfied with the Athletic Director’s resolution, the player should
meet with the school’s principal.
St. John Brebeuf Regional Secondary School
6. All athletes must complete the ‘Athlete Code of Conduct’ and pay the athletic
extra-curricular fee (see last page of this section) and a uniform deposit ($100).
No athlete may participate in practice or competition until these forms and
payments are completed and submitted (Families that are unable to pay the entire
or part of the fee should contact the Athletic Director or Principal).
7. Deposits ($100) will be returned once all uniforms and equipment have been
returned to the school.
8. Athletes are to be dressed in the official team uniform when representing St. John
Brebeuf in an athletic contest. These uniforms are to be worn only for athletic
competitions and not for physical education classes, practice, or recreational use.
9. A second uniform will only be distributed once a second deposit cheque has been
given to the school.
10. An athlete that quits one sport is not eligible to play another sport unless the
Athletic Director and/or Principal have given permission.
11. School personnel will make every effort to keep the locker rooms secure: however
the student-athlete is responsible for issued school equipment as well as his/her
own personal belongings.
12. Training supplies are very expensive and must be used wisely and carefully. Tape
and under wrap are for care and prevention of injuries only.
13. Students must meet the eligibility requirements of BC School Sports.
14. All players, with the assistance of their parents, are responsible to arrange
transportation to and from the event. It is not the responsibility of the coach or
teacher sponsor to arrange transportation.
Additionally, all players are required to adhere to BC School sports Student-Athlete
Code of Conduct.
Student-Athlete’s Code of Conduct
The actions of a student-athlete are a reflection of themselves, their team, their school
and their community. A student’s involvement in school sport provides opportunities
and experiences that are important to the development of a well-rounded student.
However, student-athletes must remember that their participation in school sport is a
privilege, not a right.
Student-athletes shall:
2.2.1 Treat Everyone with Respect
Before any individual becomes a coach at St. John Brebeuf, he/she must complete a
criminal records check. All teachers and staff members will have completed this before
employment was granted. Therefore, any outside coaches will complete the check. This
fee will be covered by the Athletic Department.
All coaches must adhere to the guidelines prescribed by BC School Sports:
The coach / student-athlete relationship is a privileged one. Coaches play a critical role
in the personal and athletic development of their students. Therefore, coaches are
expected to model the fundamentally positive aspects of school sport. Coaches are
responsible for their own behaviour as well as their student-athletes.
2.1.1 Coaches shall recognize that school sport is an extension of the classroom, with moral
and legislative obligations required of the coach at all times.
2.1.2 Coaches shall uphold the rules and regulations of BC School Sports, the local Athletic
Association and applicable Sport Commission.
2.1.3 Coaches shall actively uphold the rules of the sport, the spirit of the rules of the sport,
Parents have a major role within St. John Brebeuf’s Athletic Department. As a regional
school, it is imperative that parents do everything they can to ensure that their child
Athletic Fees
Over the course of many years, our schools athletic program has grown and so have
the fees to run events. Each sport is required to pay a certain fee to BC School
Sports, Fraser Valley Athletic Association and Abbotsford/Mission Athletic
Association. These fees have been slowly increasing over the years, yet our school
fees have remained stationary. After looking at our budget over the past few years,
we have decided that it is time to increase the individual sport fees in order to offset
some of the rising costs. The new athletic fees will still only incur about 30 per cent
of the total cost of running a high school athletic program.
Each sport has been divided accordingly, relative to the costs that sport accrues.
Keep in mind that aside from association fees, we have other costs such as insurance,
transportation (track and field, soccer, and any out of town trips), referees,
maintenance of equipment and uniforms.
As a bonus to our increasing fees, we have decided to give a warm-up t-shirt with the
proper sport indicated on it along with each paid fee. This will save you the extra
cost of ordering a warm-up shirt during the season. The new fees are as follows:
Cross Country $25
Senior Volleyball $55
Gr.8 / Junior Volleybal l $40
Senior Basketball $55 *
Gr.8 / Junior Basketball $40 *
Senior Soccer $40
Gr.8 / Junior Soccer $30
Golf $10
Track and Field $30
*Basketball will have a mandatory extra cost for a practice reversible that they will keep.
This can be used for any basketball team, at any grade level throughout their basketball
career at St. John Brebeuf.
Thank you for our understanding the reasoning behind our fee increases. With your
continued support we hope to continue to bring you quality sports programs and
opportunities for the students at St. John Brebeuf School.
