Habitat for Humanity - Bishop Gregory Bittman, known for his work as an apprentice home renovator, examines
some of the supplies for sale at Habitat for Humanity’s south Edmonton ReStore. Store manager Tapasya Pai hosted
Bishop Bittman, Susan Barylo of the Office of Evangelization and Catechesis, and other archdiocesan staff on a tour
of the facility to help promote Archbishop Smith’s invitation for Catholic individuals, families, parishes and
movements to participate in HFH-Edmonton’s second annual Interfaith Housing Build in the month of May. Details

Week for Life and the Family May 4-12
The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops has approved a national plan in service of the cause of life
and the needs of the family. As part of that plan, the Archdiocese of Edmonton is pleased to present a
series of events during our first annual Week for Life and the Family, May 4-12, 2013.
In advance of the week, the Catholic Bishops of Alberta and the NWT have issued a Pastoral Letter,
Life and Family: Nurturing God's Precious Gifts, in which they remind us that marriage and family are
gifts of God, and invite all to participate in this special week.
"The Week for Life and Family will be a wonderful opportunity both to celebrate the beauty of life,
marriage and family and to offer assistance in understanding and addressing the difficulties families
face,” the bishops write. "The Church offers you support and opportunities for learning. Above all, she
offers you Christ – his presence, strength, forgiveness and peace, especially through the sacraments.”
In the Archdiocese of Edmonton, we have a variety of events planned, addressing different issues and

that appeal to you - all events are free of charge – as well as liturgical and other resources. If you cannot

Jubilee Pilgrimage to Holy Land with Archbishop Smith

Message to Archbishop of Boston
Archbishop Smith, in his role as President of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB, has
written to His Eminence Sean Patrick Cardinal O'Malley, O.F.M. Cap., Archbishop of Boston. In his letter,
Archbishop Smith conveys the sorrow and prayers of the Bishops and faithful of Canada in the wake of
Monday's bombings during the Boston marathon. Text of the letter:
Your Eminence,
In the wake of the terrible bombings that occurred during the Boston marathon, I express on behalf of the
Bishops and faithful of Canada our heartfelt sorrow at the loss of life and serious injury caused by this
senseless act. Please be assured of our fraternal support as you reach out with your clergy and pastoral
workers to care for those impacted by this horror. In our prayer we embrace the victims and their families,
and indeed all the people of your great city.
In this Easter season, the Church proclaims with deep conviction the triumph of the light of Christ over the
darkness of sin. May this truth take deep root now in the hearts of all affected by this tragedy, and abide as
the wellspring of sure hope.

Nothing more Beautiful
After five years, our Nothing More Beautiful series comes to an end with a special Mass at 7 p.m. on
Wednesday, May 1, the feast of St. Joseph the Worker, patron saint of the Archdiocese of Edmonton.
The liturgy will include a blessing of a new icon of St. Joseph commissioned in honour of the 100 th
anniversary of the Archdiocese. We will also be marking the 50th anniversary of the St. Joseph's
Basilica. A reception and short program will follow the Mass. All are welcome!

A day of retreat, reflection and formation for pastoral assistants, parish secretaries, administrators and
other parish employees. "Reconnecting to my Call: What am I looking for" is the theme for the 2013
Pastoral Assistants' Day, which will be facilitated by Rita Sandmeier, Program Facilitator/Spiritual
Director, and Debbie Doornbos, Program Director of Providence Renewal Centre. Registration/Welcome
begins at 9 a.m. Archbishop Smith will celebrate Mass to begin the day at 9:30 a.m. in the chapel. Lunch

Christian Initiation Workshop
Baptize and Anointed for Mission: A workshop on Christian Initiation is intended as a formation course
for all baptized Catholics, and especially those who help prepare children, youth and adults for the
sacraments (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist): pastors & deacons, Catholic school teachers &
home school parents, parish staff & volunteers involved with sacramental preparation (including RCIA &
RCIA Adapted for Children), parents, godparents, and anyone imparts the faith of the sacraments onto
others. The workshop will take place on Friday, May 31 (6:30-9 p.m.) and Saturday, June 1 (9:30 a.m. –
3:30 p.m.) at the Assembly Hall in Pastoral and Administration Offices, 8421-101 Avenue, Edmonton.
Cost is $20 and includes Saturday lunch. Our presenter is Catherine Ecker from the Archdiocese of
Toronto, who is a member of the North American Forum on the Catechumenate. For more information

In conjunction with the Diocese of Calgary, the One Rock Youth Festival/WYD@home will be hosted on
July 26-28 in Cochrane. These dates coincide with the closing Vigil and Mass in Rio de Janeiro, and we
will have live feeds from Brazil. This is a great opportunity for young adults who are unable to travel to
World Youth Day to share in the event. It’s shaping up to be an amazing time, with six of our Alberta
bishops confirmed to attend. Highlights:
* An incredible Stations of the Cross dramatization on Friday
* A pilgrimage- with Reconciliation, Mass
* A priests vs youth soccer game
* Catechesis sessions with the Bishops
* A concert by Audrey Assad
* Adoration (Adoremus style) with our very own Bishop Bittman on Saturday, and then
* Sunday is a morning of music, testimonies and prayer that leads to the closing Mass with all
the Bishops!

Life and Family: Nurturing God's Precious Gifts
Dear Faithful in Christ,
Life, marriage and family are gifts of God. As we now embark upon the Week for Life and
Family, we Bishops of Alberta and the Northwest Territories wish to reflect with you on the
beauty and wonder of these realities, and offer our closeness and support to any who are
struggling.
From its inception, human life is sacred, possessed of a dignity that endures throughout its
natural span. As the gift of God, it is to be welcomed, treasured, and protected. Therefore, the
Bishops of Canada have recently undertaken to unite and strengthen the efforts of Catholics
across the country to celebrate and uphold the wondrous gift of life. In their document entitled
Elements of a National Plan for Life and Family, the Bishops call for the establishment of an
annual Week for Life and Family, which is to be marked each May in every Diocese according
to its capacities and resources. The central and primary focus of this week is the family, the
community of love which fashions, nourishes and protects the gift of life.
In God’s loving design, human life arises from the marital embrace of man and woman. The
communion of love between husband and wife, open to and creative of life, forms the family,
which is thus the natural and proper environment for the nurture and education of children. At
home we learn to share, to give, and to love. In the heart of the family the faith is taught and
embraced. This is why we often refer to the family as “the domestic church”. As faith is lived in
the home, the family becomes an oasis, a safe place, and a bulwark against outside forces that
might diminish human dignity and erode our hope in God. From the family we are sent out into
the world to proclaim the Gospel, to build a culture of life and a civilization of love. As Blessed
John Paul II said, “As the family goes, so goes the nation and so goes the whole world in which
we live.”
Today many families are struggling or even broken. To these we express in a particular way our
closeness and support. The current pressures on family life are enormous: busyness, financial
constraint, unemployment or underemployment, addictions, and separation from extended family

or other support networks. Moreover, the individualistic and self-centered currents of modern
society undermine the virtues of fortitude, self-sacrifice, commitment, and hope that enable
marriage and family to remain strong and flourish. When a family struggles for these or any
other reason, the Church wishes to draw near with its message of hope and the services provided
by its agencies of social outreach. The Week for Life and Family will be a wonderful opportunity
both to celebrate the beauty of life, marriage and family and to offer assistance in understanding
and addressing the difficulties families face.
Each Diocese and Eparchy will plan its own events and learning opportunities related to
marriage, family and life. We invite you to participate in these events, which are intended to help
you live out your vocation to holiness within the family. The Church offers you support and
opportunities for learning. Above all, she offers you Christ – his presence, strength, forgiveness
and peace, especially through the sacraments. He is the sure anchor in the changing tides of
modern society. Let us entrust our families and marriages to Jesus, and place him at the centre of
our family lives, as did the Holy Family of Nazareth, so that the beauty and dignity of family life
will shine forth as a sign of hope to the world.
