Exciting Plans Develop From Annual 

Planning Conference 

The Rosemead Chamber of 

Commerce is working hard for 

its members and the business 

community! New and returning board 

members joined together on August 13, 

2013 for an all-day Planning Conference 

at Westminster Gardens in Duarte, which 

served as a wonderful retreat for a day of 

thought-provoking discussions, strategic 

plans, and overall board development. 

The meeting offered the usual topics 

of board governance, board member 

roles, revisiting previous conference 

goals, and planning the fiscal year 

ahead. Additionally, the rest of the 

conference agenda was tailored to 

focus on addressing important matters 

specific to the Rosemead Chamber and 

ensuring that we prioritize action plans 

beyond just discussion. Board members 

were actively involved in an S.W.O.T. 

(Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities 

and Threats) Analysis and provided 

important feedback in our Board of 

Directors survey.

Alarcon and Maggie Clark, and staff 

for joining our program again this year

with city plans. City Manager Jeff Allred, Director of Community 

Development Michelle Ramirez, and Director of Public Works 

Chris Marcarello presented the city’s current strategy plan, budget 

highlights for the 2013-2014 fiscal year, and the upcoming strategic 

plan update for 2014-2015. 

Major plans for the 2013-2014 term include a continuation of 

plans underway for new events and upgrading our website and social 

media platforms. We’re also initiating plans to grow our membership 

program, redesign the Rosemead Report, and revitalize several 

committees. Members are encouraged to take part in our collective 

efforts to make membership work even more for their business. Join 

a committee or let us know what we can do to support your business!

AYC Fact Sheet 

MISSION STATEMENT 

Our mission is to meet the needs of low-income and atrisk 

youth and families of all ethnicities, with a focus on 

Asian immigrants. Our culturall appropriate multi-lingual 

(Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Spanish, and English) 

programs enable those we serve to adapt and contribute to 

a muli-culturally society. 

BRIEF HISTORY 

The Asian Youth Center was founded in 1989 by the 

United Way Asian Task Force. Their concerns were the 

under-served Asian population living in the San Gabriel 

Valley who suffered from serious, inadequate health and 

education services. 

Over the years AYC grew from an annual budget of 

$140,000, serving 50 youth in a limited geographic area 

to a organization that currently serves over 5,000 people, 

an annual budget of more than four million dollars, and a 

service area that includes the Greater San Gabriel Valley, 

Antelope Valley, and parts of the City of Los Angeles. 

Along the way, AYC expanded its scope and services 

to include youth and families of all ethnicities while 

remaining its core cultural and linnguistic competence 

with Asian immigrants. 

SERVICES 

AYC provides three types of services: 

• Youth and family Services include social service 

programs that are provided out in the community for atrisk, 

probation, and adjudicated youth. These services 

are focused around youth development principles and 

addresses topics such as Decision Making and Conflict 

Resolution. In addition we also provide Parenting 

Education, and a culturally appropriate Emergency Food 

Program that serves approximately one hundred families 

each month. 

• Educational Enrichment Services include after-school, 

summer and weekend educational enrichment,tutoring, 

youth development, college and career preparation 

(SAT Prep Class), a senior computer literacy class, and 

others. Our tutors are experienced in-the-classroom and 

combined, speak a total of four languages. 

• Health and Policy Services include providing the 

community with outreach education regarding the health 

hazards of second hand smoke, in addition to enacting 

smoke-free public places. Past programs included Breast 

Cancer Prevention Education, HIV Prevention Education, 

and others. 

LOCATIONS 

Our Main Administrative Office is the TAWA Youth 

Center which houses Educational Enrichment Services 

for high-school youth that includes a gymnasium with 

a with a half basketball court and a computer lab. Our 

second building is the May L. To Educational Center 

located just down the street that houses the educational 

programs for youth ages 6-14. Our third building was 

recently acuired which will house AYC’s administrative 

staff, opening up additional space for ne classrooms. That 

building is currently undergoing renovation.

Matching Funds for Your Donation 

I think you all know that I am associated with the 

Savannah Cemetery. It is owned by the El Monte Cemetery 

Association and was founded in 1850. 75% of the early 

pioneers that came by covered wagon and settled in El 

Monte and the surrounding area are buried there. Because 

of changing boundaries, the cemetery is now located in 

Rosemead, but one should always remember the El Monte 

legacy left by the early pioneers. 

For a limited time, the MC Gill Corporation of El 

Monte has offered to match any donations or funds raised 

at 50 cents for every dollar we receive. MC Gill has been 

a great friend to Savannah Cemetery, so now is the time 

to show him that we can go out and raise some funds on 

our own. 

Any amount you can send will be greatly 

appreciated....$5.00 becomes $7.50: $10.00 becomes 

$15.00: $25.00 becomes $37.50...$50 becomes $75.00 

and so on. I know that it is “tough” out there, everyone 

has their hand out, but I truly feel that we need to keep 

the History of the cemetery alive. 

Last year, the California State Historic 

Resources Commission, voted unanimously to 

designate Savannah Memorial Park as Historic Landmark 

Frustration is being felt in today’s real estate market. 

It was very different from what sellers felt earlier 

this year as many of them saw an increase in buyers 

and over bids. Homes were selling like hotcakes while 

many buyers felt discouraged as they could not compete 

with investors, cash buyers, or those who had a larger 

down payment. Now that summer is over and interest 

rates have gone up, we are seeing a change in the industry. 

All buyers and sellers have been affected by this change.

#1046 in California. This was a great step in the preservation 

of the cemetery, but we still have to rely on the support of 

the community to help us maintain the grounds, and preserve 

this historic site. Our goal is to be able to establish a good 

“reserve fund” and to make the community aware of the rich 

history of this region, and help them learn about the people 

who did so much to settle this area.

How Can I Prepare My Small Business for a Disaster 

As a small business owner you should develop a 

disaster preparedness plan. It’s just as important 

as developing a business plan. Having a disaster 

plan in place will make the difference between being shut 

down for a few days, and losing your livelihood. 

Meet with an insurance agent who understands 

the needs of your business. Business-interruption 

insurance—which replaces income lost when a business 

suffers downtime becomes of a covered peril—should be 

a consideration. Normal hazard insurance doesn’t cover 

floods, so make sure you have the right kind of insurance. 

Make sure you know what your insurance does not 

cover. 

As the business owner, you should ask yourself 

the following questions: Am I prepared to relocate 

temporarily What would happen if my suppliers shut 

down Do my employees know what to do in case of an 

emergency

are located. A safety coordinator could be appointed— 

someone who will take responsibility for making sure all the 

fire extinguishers work, planning safety drills, developing 

evacuation plans. 

Vital business records—information stored on paper and 

computer, should be copied and saved on both the hard dive 

and on backup diskettes at an offsite location at least 50 miles 

away from the main business site. 

Your business should also have a “recovery 

communications” plan in place. Key employees can be 

assigned as spokespersons who will contact suppliers, 

creditors, other employees, customers, media and utility 

companies to get the word out that the business is still viable. 

Also, that spokesperson can keep the public informed of 

rebuilding efforts, if necessary.

Networking Breakfast Mixer 

Over 100 attendees woke up bright and early 

for the Networking Breakfast 3.0 event 

on August 14, 2013 in, as the Rosemead 

Chamber teamed with the Commerce Industrial 

Council, Montebello, and Monterey Park 

chambers to start the day right with networking, 

giveaways, and a wonderful breakfast spread 

provided by Paco’s Mexican Restaurant. We thank 

our members, including Paco’s, DLL Business 

Solutions, Motel 6, 

and T.G.I. Friday’s, 

for joining as 

sponsors. 

Smarter Networking 

In the era of Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter, does in-person networking still matter 

You’d better believe it. In fact, according to a recent study, on the average, business 

people who spent six to nine hours per week networking generated 50 percent of 

their business through networking related referrals. 

Break the ice 

Make small talk easier by wearing something that inspires conversation, like an unusual 

brooch or scarf, colorful socks or a funny necktie. Not only do these props serve 

as icebreakers, but they also make you memorable. 

Be able to describe your business in one sentence 

Avoid buzzwords and jargon; instead, imagine you’re telling your mom or a third-grader 

what your company does. Focus on explaining how your business benefits customers. 

Listen more than you talk 

Good news for the shy networker: Listening can open doors. Ask questions about other 

people’s businesses and they’ll be happy to answer, while you gain insight into what 

they need and how you might be able to work together. 

Focus on quality, not quantity 

Networking is not about collecting 1,000 business cards, but about making real 

connections with people. Focus on what you can give the other person, not what you 

can get from them, and you’ll find that others are eager to help you. 

Keep mingling 

So that you don’t spend all your time talking to one person, develop a tactful way of 

ending conversations. Say something like “It’s been great to meet you. I hope you 

don’t mind, but I’d like to talk to a few other people before the event is over. Here’s my 

card; let’s stay in touch.” 

Take a leading role 

Don’t be a passive attendee, be an active participant. Volunteer to set up before the 

event, participate in committees or chair panels. You’ll increase your visibility and 

get to know people faster. 

Develop a follow-up plan 

Create a system for following up with people you meet at networking events. For example, 

you could begin by following up on any plans made at the event, then reach out to your 

new contacts on social media, and eventually suggest meeting for coffee or lunch. 

Build relationships 

Schedule time each week to stay in touch with your new contacts by commenting on their 

social media status; sending them articles or information that might be useful to their 

business; sending them holiday, birthday and anniversary cards; or getting together. 

Don’t give up 

Many business people give up on networking without ever investing enough time to 

make it pay off. Keeping the six-to-nine-hour-per-week figure in mind, give each 

networking group at least six months of effort before deciding it’s not for you.

Salad Rolls 

Pack along homemade salad rolls 

for a cool and light picnic meal 

Out of all the picnic ideas listed here, 

this one requires a little more preparation 

but it’s worth it! Vietnamese 

salad rolls are light, fresh and burst 

with flavor in every bite. 

What you’ll need: 

“Rice paper wraps” and “vermicelli 

noodles” (try your local Asian market), 

vegetables (cucmber, lettuce 

and carrots), herbs (Thai basil, cilantro 

and mint), sliced cooked chicken, 

beef or shrimp, bottled sweet chili 

dipping sauce (found in the Asian 

aisle at most grocery stores). 

Method: 

Prepare the salad on the day of the 

pictic. Cook vermicelli noodles according 

to package directions and 

drain. Julienne the vegetables and 

chop the herbs. Heat water in a wide 

pot/pan until warm. Dip the nice paper 

wraps in the warm water until 

softened and place onto a plate. In 

the center of the wrap, put vegetables 

and noodles, meat and herbs. Roll 

up by folding top corner (closest to 

you) down over the filling, fold the 

two sides in toward the center and 

then continue rolling to the bottom of 

the rice paper roll. Cover with plastic 

wrap and pack it in your basket along 

with the bottled sweet chili sauce for 

dipping.

Red Cross to Host Blood Drive 

The City of Rosemead, in partnership with the American Red 

Cross, is hosting a blood drive on Thursday, September 5, 2013, 

from noon to 6 p.m., at the Rosemead Public Safety Center, 

8301 Garvey Avenue. 

Residents and members of the business community who meet 

eligibility requirements for blood donations are encouraged to donate. 

Blood supplies run low during summer months. Your blood donation 

will help boost the American Red Cross’ blood supply. 

While walk-ins are welcome, potential donors are encouraged to 

make an appointment. All donors will be provided a Subway sandwich 

to help in recovery.

Dear Parent/Guardian: 

Welcome to the Rosemead School District! We are 

proud of our school district and its quality education, longstanding 

traditions, outstanding staff, and good community 

support. The following information is presented to you to 

acquaint you with the district. 

The Rosemead Board of Trustees meets regularly on the 

first Thursday of each month in the District Office Board 

Room, 3907 Rosemead Boulevard, (Guess Street and 

Rosemead Blvd.) at 7:00 p.m. The meetings are open to 

the public and you are invited to attend. For current district

Our educational programs serve students from preschool 

through grade eight. Our district also provides services 

for students with special needs who may have learning 

disabilities, developmental speech problems, or who are 

English language learners. The district also has a free afterschool 

child care program called ASES at each site and 

two fee-based child care programs called K-ASART* for 

Kindergarten and “ASART” for 1 st – 6th grades. *KSART 

is on selected campuses only. 

During the school year, you will be receiving newsletters 

that include a variety of topics keeping you informed of

El Monte, South El Monte High Schools Come Out on Top at 

SeaPerch Competition 

Congratulations to South El Monte and El Monte 

High Schools for their first place wins at SeaPerch 

earlier this month aboard the USS Iowa in San 

Pedro. 

SeaPerch is “an innovative underwater robotics 

program that equips teachers and students with the 

resources they need to build an underwater remotely 

operated vehicle (ROV) in an in-school or out-of-school 

setting. Students build the ROV from a kit comprised of 

low-cost, easily accessible parts, following a curriculum 

that teaches basic engineering and science concepts with 

a marine engineering theme. The SeaPerch program 

provides students with the opportunity to learn about 

robotics, engineering, science and mathematics (STEM), 

while building an underwater ROV as part of a science 

and engineering technology curriculum.” 

While the SeaPerch program has been implemented 

on the east coast, this marks its debut on the west coast 

under the direction of Navy LCDR Anthony “Air” Tran. 

“The SeaPerch ROV is one of the Navy’s signature 

outreach programs and the ultimate goal is to generate 

awareness and interest in STEM so students may decide to 

pursue careers in technical, scientific and research fields 

that will fill positions critical to the safety and security of 

the United States,” said Tran. 

Students were given the task of designing an aquatic 

robot that could maneuver under water and complete 

specific tasks, such as collecting rings. At the competition, 

the teams were given five minutes to complete their 

tasks. 

South El Monte High School won the overall robot 

competition in two minutes and 35 seconds and El Monte 

High School the Overall Teamwork Achievement Award 

for interview skills and teamwork. 

More than 20 schools participated, including Arroyo 

High School. Each school had to have a teacher sponsor 

and at least five students to participate. 

The teachers attended training sessions last year 

and had the opportunity to build a robot as part of their 

training. Training expenses, as well as ROV kits and tools 

by Anne Donofrio-Holter 

were covered by the Navy. Each school was allowed only 

an additional $20 of its own to the building of the robot. 

The student teams met regularly to prepare and build 

their ROVs and Tran made several visits to campus, even 

arranging for a female admiral to speak to the students. 

“At the competition, the students were quick to make 

revisions to their robots after the one practice run and 

were provided supplies for repairs and revisions,” said El 

Monte High School

projects for their students,” said Tran. “They seized the 

opportunity to bring in a new program and partnership 

that would ultimately benefit the students with regard to 

higher education. Programs like SeaPerch would not be 

successful without their leadership and vision.” 

El Monte Union High School District Board of Trustees 

members Sal Ramirez and Maria-Elena Talamantes, along 

with superintendent Nick Salerno, were in attendance to 

support the students. 

Added Tran, “I’m glad to have formed this partnership 

in the program’s pilot year and I look forward to expanding 

it to more schools from this district.” 

“SeaPerch was a great event for students and 

staff and we thank the Navy for this partnership that 

provides activities that promote STEM education,” said 

Salerno. “Our students were very excited to participate 

and this excitement resulted in a positive educational 

experience for all and the capturing of major awards at 

the competition.”

Bosco Tech Sophomore 

Represents Boy Scouts in Japan 

Don Bosco Technical Institute (Bosco Tech) 

sophomore Xavier Cervantes just returned from 

a two-week trip to Japan’s 16 th Nippon Scout 

Jamboree where he represented the Boy Scouts of America. 

The Jamboree is the Scout Association of Japan’s largest 

event, with more than 15,000 in attendance, and dates 

back to 1949. It is the precursor to the 23 rd World Scout 

Jamboree that will be hosted by Japan in 2015. 

Chosen as an ambassador for his delegation, Cervantes 

addressed the international scouting crowd, speaking about 

the need for peace between nations. He also represented 

his group to the mayor of Ube, a city of 180,000 in the 

Yamaguchi Prefecture that the troop toured before the 

jamboree began. 

“The entire trip was a good experience in learning how 

to make new friends,” said Cervantes. “Even though we 

were from many different countries, it was pretty easy to get 

to know people because everyone was open and friendly. 

I also enjoyed learning about the rich culture behind each 

country that was represented at the jamboree.” 

Cervantes, who studies Media Arts & Technology 

at Bosco Tech, recently earned Eagle Scout ranking, the 

highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts program. To 

complete the requirements, he ran a toy campaign last 

Christmas to benefit less fortunate children, organizing 

the drive and delivering gifts on Christmas Eve. 

The 15-year old has been awarded Scouting’s World 

Bosco Tech To Host Free College Fair 

Don Bosco Technical Institute (Bosco Tech) will 

host a college fair free to all high school and middle 

school students and their parents on Tuesday, 

October 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the school’s gym and Tech 

Hall. 

The fair will feature representatives from approximately 

100 universities and colleges including UC Berkeley, 

UCLA, Loyola Marymount, Columbia University, Oregon 

State and Purdue University. The University of New 

Mexico will be providing a special presentation entitled 

“Choosing the Right College.” 

“Colleges and universities from across the country 

will be on campus to help high school students explore 

their options,” said Roberto Dimas, Bosco Tech’s 

Director of Guidance and College Counseling. “It’s a
