The <strong>Sullivan</strong> <strong>County</strong> Board of Cooperative Educational Services <strong>Adult</strong> & Continuing Education<br />

<strong>Program</strong> offers academic, technical, and vocational courses. Classes are designed for those who seek to<br />

establish themselves in an occupation or desire to upgrade their skills in a present vocation. Our program<br />

accepts adults, recent high school graduates, and non-graduates. For more information call the St. John<br />

Textbooks and Course Materials<br />

Besides course tuition, it may be necessary for students to<br />

purchase needed items such as textbooks or materials that may<br />

require additional fees.<br />

Discounts<br />

A 10% discount on specified online and/or regular classes may<br />

be available for <strong>BOCES</strong> employees, Chamber of Commerce<br />

members, and senior citizens (55 years and older).<br />

Note: Discounts only apply to Fitness, Office Procedures and<br />

Management, Home Inspector, Professional Development, Personal<br />

Enrichment, some Computer and Online classes.<br />

Certificate of Completion<br />

Upon successful completion of most courses, participants will<br />

receive a certificate of achievement or completion. The<br />

Continuing Education Unit (CEU) is a form of credit for<br />

continuing education and training. A student may earn a CEU<br />

after ten hours of participation in an organized continuing<br />

education experience under responsible sponsorship, capable<br />

direction, and qualified instruction.<br />

Tuition Assistance<br />

Tuition assistance and training opportunities may be available<br />

for individuals who qualify through the Center for Workforce<br />

Course Gift Certificate<br />

Treat a friend to a Course Gift Certificate which can be<br />

purchased in any denomination. They are available at the<br />

St. John Street Education Center.<br />

Cancellations<br />

<strong>BOCES</strong> reserves the right to cancel a class where enrollment<br />

is insufficient. Students will be notified by telephone and<br />

100% refunds will be processed. Further, we may cancel<br />

classes due to bad weather, even when <strong>BOCES</strong> main campus<br />

in Liberty remains open. Make-up classes will be scheduled.<br />

School closings will be broadcasted on WVOS (95.9 FM,<br />

1240 AM); WSUL (98.3 FM); WJFF (90.5, 94.5 FM); WDNB<br />

(Thunder 102.1 FM); and WRRV (92.7, 96.9 FM) radio.<br />

RefundPolicy<br />

The <strong>Adult</strong> <strong>Program</strong> reserves the right to cancel a course due<br />

to low enrollment. In the event a course is cancelled due to<br />

insufficient enrollment, registrants will be notified within a<br />

reasonable time before the class start date. The following policy<br />

will be implemented:<br />

1. Prior to the first day of class–100% refund, minus $15 drop fee.<br />

2. Prior to the second day of class – 50% refund, minus $15 drop fee.<br />

3.Allow up to 30 days for processing of refunds.<br />

4.Refunds are made by credit card or check depending on the<br />

form of payment used for registration.<br />

5.No refunds will be given for one day classes at which the<br />

registrant is a no show.

EduCAtion ProgrAm<br />

<strong>Sullivan</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>BOCES</strong> <strong>Adult</strong> and Continuing Education <strong>Program</strong> provides high quality educational, technical and<br />

vocational services to returning adults, out-of-school youth, and those whose primary language is other than English.<br />

Our support services empower families with life skills and citizenship training to forge life-long home, school and<br />

community involvement. Commitment to our mission enables our clients to keep pace in a fast-changing, competitive<br />

world.<br />

Academic Education<br />

We claim program success when individual students<br />

demonstrate increased reading, writing and<br />

mathematics skills, earn their GED ® diplomas,<br />

and/or improve their ability to read, write, and<br />

speak English. In fulfilling the mission established by<br />

the State Education Department to provide free academic<br />

courses to adults, we utilize Employment Preparation Education<br />

Act (EPE) funding to support instruction in a variety<br />

of formats addressing multiple learning styles among<br />

our participants.<br />

Classroom setting:<br />

The <strong>Adult</strong> <strong>Program</strong> provides several day and evening<br />

classes at the St. John Street Education Center (SJSEC)<br />

in Monticello and at other sites throughout the county. The<br />

classes include, but are not limited to, <strong>Adult</strong> Basic<br />

Education, High School Equivalency Preparation, and<br />

English for Speakers of Other Languages. We offer<br />

managed-enrollment intensive GED ® exam preparation<br />

immediately prior to each of our test center’s public<br />

exams. NYS Plus, a joint effort of <strong>Sullivan</strong> <strong>County</strong><br />

<strong>BOCES</strong> and SUNY <strong>Sullivan</strong>, assists students in earning<br />

the GED ® , as well as transitioning into college. Through<br />

rigorous math and language arts preparation,<br />

learners acquire the skill-base to test out of the<br />

college’s remedial math and writing courses. Class<br />

sessions of this intensive managed enrollment course<br />

take place on the SUNY <strong>Sullivan</strong> campus.<br />

Distance Learning/Home Study setting:<br />

The integration of computer technology and distance<br />

learning into our programs has kept pace with our<br />

students’ need for variety in tools available to assist them<br />

in reaching their goals. The Skills Tutor program is<br />

described by the NYSED as an excellent multi-media,<br />

web-based software program which offers a guided<br />

on-line computer program of home study to qualified<br />

students who cannot attend a traditional class. Teachers<br />

assign and monitor work and tutor in-class as needed. We<br />

continue to offer the packet-based GED ® home<br />

study program known as GRASP (Giving Ready <strong>Adult</strong>s<br />

a Study <strong>Program</strong>). All distance learning and home study<br />

options operate as hybrids of traditional settings<br />

and distance learning formats to enhance student success.<br />

The National Work Readiness Credential<br />

The National Work Readiness Credential is one of the "newest employability tools" that addresses what employers<br />

are looking for in new hires, and provides universal, transferable and national standards for work readiness.<br />

Upon successful completion of training and passing of the standardized exam, participants are awarded the National<br />

Work Readiness Credential which is a nationally recognized certification that acknowledges their possession of the<br />

skills needed for successful performance as entry-level workers. The national exam consists of four separate parts that<br />

address the nine skills that employers have identified as necessary to be successful in an entry-level job. The four parts<br />

include:<br />

National Healthcareer Association<br />

<strong>Sullivan</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>BOCES</strong> is pleased to announce that we are now affiliated with the National Healthcareer Association<br />

(NHA). This certification is recommended by colleges and healthcare career programs around the country. NHA is<br />

the nation’s largest heath career certification provider. They improve the quality of patient care by providing the tools<br />

needed for allied health certification.<br />

<strong>Sullivan</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>BOCES</strong> will be offering exams for the following medical programs beginning in the spring of 2012:<br />

Billing and Coding Specialist, Electronic Health Record Specialist, EKG Technician, Medical Administrative Assistant,<br />

Phlebotomy Technician and Pharmacy Technician exam dates and times will vary. All tests will be administered at<br />

the St. John Street Education Center, 22 St. John Street, Monticello, NY.<br />

The cost of the certification exams vary and are determined by NHA. Currently, exams range from $105 to $149.<br />

Those who pass the exam will be recognized as a Nationally Certified Allied Healthcare Professional. This designation<br />

could greatly increase earning potential and job security. In addition to becoming certified, you will receive a pocket<br />

ID card and certificate issued by NHA for appropriate display.<br />

appropriate techniques used in the<br />

residential construction industry to<br />

determine proper sizing of HVAC<br />

equipment and ducts in order to meet<br />

dehumidifying, ventilation and air<br />

The mission of Monticello Literacy Zone is to provide the community with a comprehensive and systemic approach<br />

to meet the literacy needs of the whole family from birth to adult; and to provide pathways out of poverty<br />

The intake and assessment process identifies<br />

the educational needs of students, and helps provide<br />

pathways to meet these needs. Students, as well as their<br />

Workforce Preparation<br />

Students are assisted in their employment quest: job<br />

search, completion of a suitable resume, letter of interest,<br />
