„Silesia Airport”. W dużej części poświęcamy go zbliżającemu się
wielkimi krokami szczytowi sezonu wakacyjnego. Śląskie lotnisko od lat
jest liderem wśród polskich portów regio<strong>na</strong>lnych w zakresie liczby obsłużonych
pasażerów czarterowych. To wszystko dzięki zwiększającej się
z każdym rokiem siatce połączeń wakacyjnych.
Na letni sezon bieżącego roku, wraz z <strong>na</strong>szymi Partnerami – biurami podróży,
przygotowaliśmy ofertę obejmującą rekordowe 38 kierunków do

Welcome to this landmark, fortieth, issue of “Silesia Airport” magazine.
Most of this issue is dedicated to the fast-approaching peak of the holiday
season. Katowice Airport has for many years been the leader with regards
to the volume of charter passengers of all of Poland’s regio<strong>na</strong>l airports.
This is all thanks to the continuously growing network of holiday desti<strong>na</strong>tions
offered.
Together with our Partners – travel agents, we have prepared an offer encompassing
a record 38 desti<strong>na</strong>tions in twelve countries and spanning
three continents. In this issue, we’re showcasing two of the new desti<strong>na</strong>tions
offered from Katowice Airport: the stunning and verdant island of
<strong>Madeira</strong>, and the pearl of the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily.
We’re also bringing the “Fly Silesia“ programme to your attention. These

Budowa nowej płyty postojowej
W kwietniu br. w Katowice Airport rozpoczęto układanie górnych warstw
nowych <strong>na</strong>wierzchni lotniskowych. W pierwszej kolejności, w ciągu <strong>na</strong>jbliższych
trzech miesięcy, wyko<strong>na</strong><strong>na</strong> zostanie droga kołowania D, skrzyżowanie
dróg kołowania D z E oraz wschodnia część płyty postojowej (PPS-1), zlokalizowa<strong>na</strong>
przed nowym hangarem. Płaszczyz<strong>na</strong>, która powstanie w ramach
I etapu betonowania nowej płyty postojowej o powierzchni 20 000 m 2 , pomieści
trzy samoloty kodu C (np. Airbus A320, Boeing 737) lub zamiennie
dwa samoloty kodu D (np. Boeing 757). Docelowo rozbudowa<strong>na</strong> płyta PPS-1
będzie miała powierzchnię 110 000 m 2 i będzie mogło z niej skorzystać jednocześnie
trzy<strong>na</strong>ście samolotów. Do układania mieszanki tworzącej <strong>na</strong>wierzchnię
płyty wykorzystywane są sprowadzone z Niemiec rozściełacze.
Umożliwiają one ułożenie <strong>na</strong>wierzchni betonowej w pasach roboczych
o szerokości odpowiednio 5 m lub 15 m bez żadnego szwu. Na lotnisku w
Pyrzowicach funkcjonuje już również węzeł betoniarski, w którym wytwarzany
jest materiał potrzebny do wyko<strong>na</strong>nia płaszczyzny postoju samolotów
April at Katowice Airport saw the start of work on laying the top layers of
the new airfield surfaces. First of all, over the next three months, taxiway D,
the crossing of taxiways D and E as well as the eastern section of Apron 1
in front of the new hangar will be completed. This section, which will complete
Stage I of the asphalting works, will boast an area of 20 000 m 2 and will
be able to hold three Code C (eg Airbus A320, Boeing 737) aircraft or two
Code D (Boeing 757) aircraft. Upon completion, Apron 1 will have an area
of 110 000 m 2 and up to thirteen aircraft will be able to use it simultaneously.
Special paving vehicles brought in from Germany will be used to lay
the apron surface. These vehicles are able to lay asphalt 5m or 15m in width
respectively, seamlessly. The airport in Pyrzowice also has its own concrete
batching plant, preparing the materials necessary for laying the surface of
the apron and taxiways. With the expansion of the apron and the modernioraz

Po<strong>na</strong>dto nowa płaszczyz<strong>na</strong> postoju samolotów będzie jeszcze bezpieczniejsza,
bowiem zostanie wyposażo<strong>na</strong> w infrastrukturę pomagającą <strong>na</strong>wigować
maszyny <strong>na</strong>wet przy widzialności wzdłuż drogi startowej nie mniejszej niż
350 m. Rozbudowa płyty postojowej oraz modernizacja dróg kołowania realizowane
są w ramach <strong>na</strong>jwiększej pod względem skali robót oraz <strong>na</strong>kładów
fi<strong>na</strong>nsowych inwestycji pn. „Port Lotniczy w Katowicach – rozbudowa
i modernizacja infrastruktury lotniskowej i portowej”. W zakresie tego projektu
zostanie wybudowa<strong>na</strong> także nowa droga startowa o długości 3200 m,
<strong>na</strong>tomiast obecny pas startowy będzie przekształcony w drogę kołowania.
Wartość inwestycji to po<strong>na</strong>d 405 mln zł netto.
Construction of the new apron

at Katowice Airport. By the time construction is completed in 2013, 10 Code
C aircraft, eg Airbus A320 or Boeing 737, or three Code D aircraft, eg. Boeing

the apron. In addition, the new apron surface will be safer for aircraft as it
will be equipped with infrastructure aiding the <strong>na</strong>vigation of aircraft even
when the visibility along the runway is no less than 350m. The expansion of
the apron and modernisation of taxiways is being realised as part of the largest
project in terms of scale and cost: “Airport in Katowice – expansion and
modernisation of port and airfield infrastructure”. This investment project
also includes the construction of a new runway measuring 3200m. The current
runway will be converted into a taxiway. All together, the investment has
a net worth of over 405 million PLN.

Z Katowice Airport do Kopenhagi
W poniedziałek 26 marca br. w Katowice Airport zadebiutowała uz<strong>na</strong><strong>na</strong>
<strong>na</strong> rynku lotniczym, działająca od 1946 roku, skandy<strong>na</strong>wska linia SAS. Przewoźnik
uruchomił rejsy do Kopenhagi, swojego <strong>na</strong>jwiększego portu przesiadkowego.
Loty z Pyrzowic do stolicy Danii realizowane będą cztery razy
w tygodniu – w poniedziałki, wtorki, czwartki i piątki – samolotami Bombardier
CRJ-200 (50 miejsc) lub CRJ-900 (88 miejsc). Dla pasażerów pierwszego
rejsu linii lotniczych SAS z Katowice Airport do Kopenhagi przygotowano
poczęstunek w postaci tortu w kształcie łodzi Wikingów. Zdobył on tytuł
Cake of the Week pierwszej części plebiscytu organizowanego przez branżowy
portal an<strong>na</strong>.aero <strong>na</strong> <strong>na</strong>jlepszy wypiek i<strong>na</strong>ugurujący nową trasę lotniczą
<strong>na</strong> świecie w letnim rozkładzie lotów.
Katowice Airport to Copenhagen
On Monday 26 March, Scandi<strong>na</strong>vian airline SAS (operatio<strong>na</strong>l since 1946)
debuted from Katowice Airport. The airline launched flights to Copenhagen,
the carrier’s largest transfer airport. Flights from Katowice Airport to
the Danish capital are timetabled to take place four times a week – Mondays,
Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and will be operated by Bombardier
CRJ 200 (50-seater) or CRJ 900 (88-seater) aircraft. To celebrate this momentous
occasion, passengers of the i<strong>na</strong>ugural SAS flight from Katowice to Copenhagen
were offered a piece of a Viking-ship shaped cake. This amazing
cake won the Cake of the Week award in a competition for route launch
cakes marking the start of the 2012 Summer Season organised by an<strong>na</strong>.aero,
an aviation industry website.

Ocean, around 600km from the
northern coast of Africa. It’s often
referred to as the ‘island of endless
spring” or the “green island”
and it certainly deserves the title.
The climate is perfect for relaxing.
The average air temperature,
even in winter, doesn’t fall below
20°C, and in summer it’s close to
the temperature of the water. All
this is thanks to the warm Gulf
Stream.
If you’re looking forward to lazing
on a beach, then you may
be in for a surprise, as <strong>Madeira</strong>
is practically devoid of beaches
– it’s cliffs all round. One of the
very few fragments of the island
with beaches, is in Porto Santo. It
would, however, be a sin to laze
the days away at the beach. It’s
not just the climate that makes
it <strong>paradise</strong> on the Atlantic, it’s
also the astounding flora and
fau<strong>na</strong> that brings tourists from
all around the world flocking to
<strong>Madeira</strong>.
<strong>Madeira</strong>’s showpiece is its
stunning flora. Its uniqueness is
evident in the fact that 60% of
the island’s area is <strong>na</strong>tio<strong>na</strong>l
parkland. The laurisilva forests
are UNESCO World Heritage listed.
An additio<strong>na</strong>l factor serving
to further underline the beauty of
<strong>na</strong>ture on <strong>Madeira</strong> is its origin –
– the entire island is an enormous
volcano. Similarly to the Ca<strong>na</strong>ry
Islands, the lava solidified making
forming stunning canyons for the
mountain streams and rivers to
flow down, to thundering waterfalls.
The enormous power from
deep inside the Earth is also
responsible for the creation of

sea level, Cabo Girão is the highest cliff in

island, between Funchal in the east and

from the top is breathtaking but from the

turystyczne. Przy dobrej pogodzie z Pico
do Arieiro widać <strong>na</strong>wet położoną 55 km
<strong>na</strong> północ wyspę Porto Santo
Set in the central part of <strong>Madeira</strong>, Pico do
Ariero (1818m) is the island’s third-highest
peak. With its amazing views, it is one of
the most popular tourist attractions. You
can almost drive right up to the peak and
the many hiking trails leading up to the
peak are incredibly popular too. On a clear
day, you can even see the island of Porto
Santo – 55km north of <strong>Madeira</strong>.

example of traditio<strong>na</strong>l terrace farming.

Występuje tam nie tylko unikalny zespół
roślin, ale także i zwierząt, np. gołąb

Holidaying on the island, visiting
Cabo Girão, the highest cliff in
Europe is absolutely mandatory.
It would also be a sin not to take
a walk along <strong>Madeira</strong>’s levadas –
irrigation ca<strong>na</strong>ls and aqueducts
carrying water from the mountains
to all the coastal towns.
Perhaps a hike along the levadas
through the prehistoric laurissilva
forest to the breathtaking scenic
lookouts. Worth visiting are the
lava caves, as is the multimedia
Volcanism Centre in São Vicente,
or the <strong>na</strong>tural lava pools in Porto
Moniz. It is without a doubt that
one of the most stunning <strong>na</strong>tural
attractions is a trip through the
unique ‘<strong>Madeira</strong>n tundra’ – the
Paul da Serra plateau.
<strong>Madeira</strong> is also a Mecca for enthusiasts
of extreme sports: canyoning,
rock-climbing, dare-devil
bike riding, diving, windsurfing
or water-skiing. Not for the fainthearted.
If you enjoy doing any of
these sports, then the conditions
on <strong>Madeira</strong> are absolutely perfect
for it!
History buffs, on the other hand,
will find there’s someone to
answer all their questions at the
<strong>Madeira</strong> Story Centre, situated in
the old part of Funchal, near the
cable car linking Funchal with
Monte. A visit at the centre will
take about 1.5 hours and covers
14 million years of <strong>Madeira</strong>’s history.
For explorers and travellers,
the Theme Park in Santa<strong>na</strong>
covers the culture of <strong>Madeira</strong>’s
archipelago.
Weary from the intensity of
island explorations it’s perhaps
time to savour the local cuisine.
The menu is simple: fish, fish
and more fish, and a bit of meat
thrown in for good measure.
Two local specialities are a must:
Espada and cataplan. The first is a
rare deep-sea fish, usually served
with ba<strong>na</strong><strong>na</strong>s. The second is a
stew with fish, tomatoes and garlic.
Meat-lovers need to look for
espetada in the menu – a skewer
of mari<strong>na</strong>ted beef with garlic
and herbs (it must be on a bay
leaf twig). Seeing as <strong>Madeira</strong> is
famous for its fantastic wines, no
meal is complete without some
wine, and the phenome<strong>na</strong>l local
liqueurs are perfect for desert.
To finish up, it’s worth mentioning
some of the island’s famous
inhabitants. First and foremost,
Cristiano Ro<strong>na</strong>ldo – the object of
many a crush, loved by football
fans, the forward for the Portuguese
<strong>na</strong>tio<strong>na</strong>l team, and player
of Real Madrid, who was born in
<strong>Madeira</strong>. Christopher Columbus
lived here, and Charles I of Austria
spent his fi<strong>na</strong>l months in <strong>Madeira</strong>
as did the king of Hungary (who
is buried at the local church).
Polish people also rate a mention
in the island's history. In the early-
1930s, Jozef Pilsudzki recuperated
on the island. <strong>Madeira</strong> figures in
a legend involving the Hungarian
and Polish King Wladyslaw
III (Warenczyk). It seems that he
didn’t actually fall in the battle
of War<strong>na</strong> with the Turks, but
survived and in the clothes of a
Franciscan monk, he escaped to
<strong>Madeira</strong>. In order to hide his true
identity, he lived there under the
<strong>na</strong>me Henrique Alemão. Historians
are still divided as to the
truth of this. What is interesting
though is the fact that documentation
exists, that could confirm
the long life of Warnenczyk on
the Evergreen Island. While on
holidays on the island, you can
try and solve the mystery. Who
knows, maybe you will be the
one to solve the puzzle.

zachwyca turystów, nie dziwi więc,
iż jest coraz popularniejszym kierunkiem
wakacyjnego wypoczynku.
A powodów, sprawiających,
że moż<strong>na</strong> zakochać się w Sycylii
bez opamiętania, z<strong>na</strong>jdziemy co
<strong>na</strong>jmniej kilka. Po pierwsze historia,
której ślady bez trudu od<strong>na</strong>jdziemy
niemalże w każdym zakątku wyspy.

(m.in. Sant’Agostino, della Gancia),
renesansowymi (Santa Maria dei

barokowymi (np. San Matteo,
San Giuseppe dei Teatini). W Palermo
warto też zobaczyć fragmenty
starożytnych murów rzymskich.
Dodatkowo, aby mocniej poczuć
klimat tego miasta, koniecznie <strong>na</strong>leży
wybrać się <strong>na</strong> lokalny bazar.
Na liście obowiązkowych do odwiedzenia
miejsc są też Syrakuzy –
– jed<strong>na</strong> z pierwszych greckich kolonii
i miasto, którego powstanie
datuje się <strong>na</strong> VIII w. p.n.e. Z<strong>na</strong>jdziemy
tutaj m.in. pozostałości greckiego
amfiteatru z V w. p.n.e., ruiny
świątyni Apolla, czy barokową katedrę
z ukrytą w bryle antyczną kolum<strong>na</strong>dą,
zlokalizowaną w <strong>na</strong>jstarszej
części Syrakuz, <strong>na</strong> przybrzeżnej
wysepce Ortygia. Wybierzmy
się i do Katanii. Jak większość miast
<strong>na</strong> Sycylii młodość ma już za sobą,
bo liczy aż 2700 lat, co samo w sobie
zapewnia <strong>na</strong>m już zachwycającą
różnorodność architektoniczną.
Zobaczyć tu moż<strong>na</strong> np. słynne
Ogrody Belliniego lub pochodzącą
z XIII w. fortecę Ursino. Wycieczkę
po wyspie trzeba uzupełnić o dwa

At the very tip of ‘Italy’s boot’, like
a ball prepared to be kicked, lies
the largest and one of the most
beautiful islands on the Mediterranean
Sea – Sicily. The island has
for years delighted tourists, so it’s
no surprise that it’s an ever more
popular holiday desti<strong>na</strong>tion. And
we can find at least several reasons
for which you will fall in love with
Sicily. First of all there’s its history –
– traces of which are easily found
in every nook and cranny of the
island. Owing to its strategic location,
the island has been the scene
of numerous battles for more than
three thousand years and the
rulers of Sicily changed remarkably
often. Sicily was ruled by the
Greeks, Phonecians, Romans, Byzantines,
Romans, Arabs, Normans,
the French, Spanish and of course
the Italians, who rule the island
today.
The number of mo<strong>na</strong>rchs has left
its mark on the architecture. There
are so many historical monuments
that it’s impossible to tell you
about them all, but we’ve prepared
a list of several stalwarts that are a
must. First of all, Palermo, with the

beaches is not all, because it’s
entirely possible to love the island
for the food itself. The sunny and
warm climate means that nowhere

combining olive oil, sun-ripened
tomatoes with eggplants or broccoli,

Katowice Airport in Pyrzowice is
the leader amongst all of Poland’s
regio<strong>na</strong>l airports in terms of the
volume of charter passengers handled
and the extent of its holiday
network. Last year, this sector saw
815 711 passengers handled and
in 2012 there will me more than
900 000 – thanks to the largest
network of charter desti<strong>na</strong>tions in
the airport’s history. All together,
tour operators are offering 38 holiday
desti<strong>na</strong>tions with departures
from Katowice Airport. That encompasses
12 countries on three
continents. Let’s take a closer look.
The country with the most desti<strong>na</strong>tions
(eight all together) offered
from Katowice Airport is Spain:
Malaga, Barcelo<strong>na</strong>-Giro<strong>na</strong>, Majorca,
Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote,
Gran Ca<strong>na</strong>ria and Ibiza. The last
two are new in 2012. The country
with the second-most number
of charter connections from
Pyrzowice is Greece. The seven
desti<strong>na</strong>tions offered to Greece are:
Saloniki, Heraklionu, Chania, Zakinthos,
Corfu, Kos and Rhodes. Third
place, with four desti<strong>na</strong>tions and
a stalwart in holiday desti<strong>na</strong>tions,
is Egypt. Charter flights are offered
from Katowice Airport to the largest
resort areas in the country:
Taba, Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada
and Marsa El Alam. Joint third
place-getter is the most popular
desti<strong>na</strong>tion last season, Turkey.
The hit desti<strong>na</strong>tion in Turkey was
Antalya. The list also includes Dalaman,

i nowe schematy kolorystyczne
<strong>na</strong> niebie, w pewnym
sensie przerywające monotonię
<strong>na</strong> kartach pamięci ich aparatów
fotograficznych.
26 marca 2012 roku – dzień,
w którym skandy<strong>na</strong>wski operator
Scandi<strong>na</strong>vian Airlines (SAS) zai<strong>na</strong>ugurował
swoje pierwsze połączenie
z kopenhaskiego lotniska
Kastrup do Katowice Airport. Przed
godziną 14:00, <strong>na</strong> podejściu do pasa
startowego 27, pojawił się Bombardier
CRJ-200ER, noszący z<strong>na</strong>ki
rejestracyjne OY-RJB. Krótko po
wylądowaniu popularnie zwa<strong>na</strong>
przez miłośników „CRJ-ka” zjechała
w drogę kołowania Alpha, gdzie
została przywita<strong>na</strong> tradycyjnym
salutem wodnym, wytworzonym
przez dwa wozy strażackie stojące
<strong>na</strong>przeciwko siebie. Ten niezwykły
sposób witania nowej linii, który
praktykuje się <strong>na</strong> wielu lotniskach
świata, mieli okazję z bardzo bliska
uwiecznić fani awiacji z dwóch
stowarzyszeń działających przy
pyrzowickim lotnisku: Silesia Spotters
oraz EPKT Spotters. Dzięki
uprzejmości władz portu oraz jego
pracowników, spotterzy fotografowali
to zdarzenie z tzw. strefy
airside, a słonecz<strong>na</strong> aura i ogromne
ilości wody, wyrzucanej z wielką
siłą z lotniskowych wozów strażackich,
pozwoliły <strong>na</strong> wytworzenie
się przed maszyną Scandi<strong>na</strong>vian
Airlines przepięknej tęczy. Wszyscy
pasażerowie lotów i<strong>na</strong>uguracyjnych
z dnia 26 marca br. zostali
poczęstowani tortem powitalnym
w kształcie łodzi Wikingów, specjalnie
przygotowanym <strong>na</strong> zlecenie
Działu Marketingu Górnośląskiego
Towarzystwa Lotniczego SA.
Oprócz walorów smakowych miał
przede wszystkim te wizualne, do
tego stopnia, że wygrał konkurs
„Tort tygodnia” w internetowym
serwisie branżowym an<strong>na</strong>.aero.
Skandy<strong>na</strong>wska linia lotnicza działalność
swą rozpoczęła 17 września
1946 roku, półtora miesiąca po założeniu
organizacji, w skład której
weszły ówczesne trzy główne linie
Szwecji, Danii oraz Norwegii. Dwa
lata później do spółki dołączyła
kolej<strong>na</strong> linia lotnicza ze Szwecji,
w wyniku czego w 1951 roku
utworzono konsorcjum SAS (Scandi<strong>na</strong>vian
Airlines System). Po trzech
latach skandy<strong>na</strong>wski przewoźnik,
jako pierwszy w historii lotnictwa,
uruchomił transpolarne połączenie
z Kopenhagi do Los Angeles,
z przerwami <strong>na</strong> Grenlandii oraz
w Ka<strong>na</strong>dzie. Późniejsze lata to dla
SAS ciągłe zdobywanie kolejnych
rynków oraz wykupywanie udziałów
w wielu europejskich liniach.
W 1997 roku Scandi<strong>na</strong>vian Airlines
System, wraz z innymi wielkimi
operatorami, stał się jednym z założycieli
sojuszu lotniczego Star
Alliance, m.in. z Lufthansą i United
Airlines. Początek XXI wieku
(rok 2004) przyniósł w SAS podział
firmy <strong>na</strong> cztery spółki, by pięć lat
później połączyły się ponownie
w jedno konsorcjum – SAS Scandi<strong>na</strong>vian
Airlines.
Obecnie SAS jest <strong>na</strong>jwiększym
przewoźnikiem w całej Skandy<strong>na</strong>wii
i jednym z większych w Europie.
Jego głównymi bazami są
duże lotniska przesiadkowe
(z j. angielskiego „huby”), takie jak
Sztokholm, Kopenhaga i Oslo. Do
floty Scandi<strong>na</strong>vian Airlines <strong>na</strong>leży
blisko 140 maszyn, z czego 11 to
dalekodystansowe Airbusy 330
i 340, dzięki którym SAS jest
w stanie realizować połączenia ze
wspomnianych hubów w <strong>na</strong>jdalsze
zakątki świata. Linia w ostatnim
czasie złożyła imponujące zamówienie,
m.in. <strong>na</strong> 40 Airbusów 320,
w tym 30 NEO (nowej generacji).
Dzięki rejsom <strong>na</strong> trasie Kopenhaga–Katowice–Kopenhaga,
które
odbywają się w poniedziałki, wtorki,
czwartki i piątki, pasażerowie
SAS mogą dotrzeć z województwa
śląskiego do każdego zakątka Europy
oraz w wiele miejsc <strong>na</strong> całym
świecie w bardzo przyzwoitych
ce<strong>na</strong>ch i w komfortowych warunkach.

roku ogłoszony został <strong>na</strong>jpunktualniejszą

Each new airline connection, particularly
those launched by a carrier
not yet operating from our
airport, is a source of enthusiasm.
Everyone benefits from these connections,
but those who benefit
most are passengers, who owing
to the increased competition on
the air transport market, are most
likely to save money. It is also
without a doubt a new source of
revenue for airport authorities,
and for aircraft spotters this means
new aircraft, new liveries in the sky
which in some way break up the
monotony on the memory cards in
their cameras.
26 March 2012 – the day on which
the Scandi<strong>na</strong>vian operator SAS
(Scandi<strong>na</strong>vian Airlines) i<strong>na</strong>ugurated
its first connection from
Copenhagen’s Kastrup airport to
Katowice Airport. Just before 2 pm,
a Bombardier CRJ-200ER with tail
number OY-RJB appeared on the
approach to runway 27. Shortly
after landing, the airline commonly
referred to by enthusiasts as the
‘CRJ’ made its way along Taxiway
Alpha, where it was met with the
traditio<strong>na</strong>l water cannon salute
by two fire trucks standing across
from each other. This unique
manner in which to welcome new
airlines to an airport is practiced
at many airports in the world and
the aircraft spotters from the two
associations operating at Katowice
Airport: Silesia Spotters and EPKT
Spotters, were able to see it all up
close. It was a wonderful gesture
from the airport’s authorities and
staff to allow spotters “airside” to
take photographs of the event.
The sunny weather and the
enormous amounts of water
shooting from the airports fire
trucks created a stunning rainbow
in front of the Scandi<strong>na</strong>vian Airlines
aircraft. All the passengers
on the i<strong>na</strong>ugural flight on
26 March were offered a slice
of the Viking-ship shaped cake
specially ordered by the Marketing
Department of the Upper Silesian
Aviation Group. Apart from being
incredibly tasty, the visual effect
was so pleasing that the cake won
the readers’ ‘Cake of the Week’
award on the aviation website
an<strong>na</strong>.aero.
The Scandi<strong>na</strong>vian airline was
launched 17 September 1946,
6 weeks after the three main
airlines of Sweden, Denmark and
Norway formed the organisation.
Two years later one more Swedish
airline joined and this move resulted
in the creation of the SAS
(Scandi<strong>na</strong>vian Airlines System)
consortium. Three years later, the
Scandi<strong>na</strong>vian carrier, became
the first airline in aviation history
to launch transpolar flights from
Copenhagen to Los Angeles with
transit stops in Greenland and
Ca<strong>na</strong>da.
SAS focused on acquiring successive
markets and shares in many
European airlines. In 1997, Scandi<strong>na</strong>vian
Airlines System together
with other enormous operators
such as Lufthansa and United
Airlins, became one of the founding
members of the Star Alliance
Group. The beginning of the 21st
century (2004) saw SAS divided
into four groups. Five years later,
these groups rejoined to form one
consortium – SAS Scandi<strong>na</strong>vian
Airlines.
Currently, SAS is the largest carrier
in Scandi<strong>na</strong>via and is amongst the
largest in Europe. Its main bases
are the large hubs such as those
in Stockholm, Copenhagen and
Oslo. SAS Scandi<strong>na</strong>vian Airlines
boasts a fleet of almost 140 aircraft,
of which 11 are long-haul Airbus
330s and 340s. It is thanks to these
aircraft that SAS is able to operate
flights from these hubs to the furthest
corners of the Earth. Recently,
the airline placed an impressive
order of 40 Airbus 320 aircraft –
– including 20 NEO (new generation)
aircraft.
With flights on the Copenhagen-
Katowice-Copenhagen route,
operating on Mondays, Tuesdays,
Thursdays and Fridays, passengers
from Silesia can travel to every
corner of Europe and indeed to
many places all around the world
comfortably and at very competitive
prices. In 2011, Scandi<strong>na</strong>vian
Airlines were declared to be the
world’s most punctual airline –

in any way he can. Another star
actively promoting his city is Olek
Klepacz, the current leader of
Formacja Niezywych Schabuff,
a band formed in Czestochowa
and whose first lead singer was
Jacek Palucha (currently a highly
regarded artist-painter).
Muniek and the lead-singers of
Formacja Niezywych Schabuff
aren’t the only well-known Polish
musicians associated with
Czestochowa. Marek Jackowski
from Maa<strong>na</strong>m recorded here as
did Zakopower. Janusz ‘Yani<strong>na</strong>’
Iwanski, guitarist from Maa<strong>na</strong>m
and other bands, comes from and
lives in Czestochowa. Mateusz
Pospieszalski who has written
hits for Poland’s best vocalists
has also lived in the city for many
years. In recent times, the career
of Czestochowa’s stand-out reggae
group, Habakuk, has really
taken off.
Festivals kick off
The Czestochowa Philharmonia,
“Gaude Mater” Centre for the
Promotion of Culture, Teatr from
Poland, the many clubs and pubs
in Czestochowa – everywhere
you go, you can savour a plethora
of different music events.
The large events are of course
the city’s cultural showpieces.
These mostly focus on classical
music – The Inter<strong>na</strong>tio<strong>na</strong>l Festival
of Sacred Music “Gaude Mater”,
the Bronislaw Huberman Violin
Festival, “Sacrum” Trien<strong>na</strong>le of Art.
However, don’t think that the city
is devoid of open-air festivals –
there’s the Noc Kultural<strong>na</strong> (a night
of culture – eng), Piknik Samorzadowy
(council picnic –eng),
Taste of Czestochowa, Days of
Czestochowa, Gwiazdkowa Aleja
(Star Avenue – eng), and other
music festivals that are littered
throughout May and June.

Warsztaty „Design w terenie!” – Mstów 2011 ”Design w terenie!” Workshops – Mstów 2011
Opracowując koncepcję przestrzeni
publicznej <strong>na</strong>leży myśleć
o rozwiązaniach, które będą pomagać
mieszkańcom w odbudowie
wspólnot, podnosić rangę
miejsca poprzez podkreślanie
lokalnych wartości, zaspokajanie
potrzeb, wzbogacanie ludzkich
doświadczeń i integrację. Włączenie
w proces projektowy
mieszkańców pozwala poz<strong>na</strong>ć
ich pragnienia, sposób życia,
problemy i wykorzystuje drzemiący
potencjał, chęci, zaangażowanie.
„Design w terenie!” to warsztaty,
podczas których grupa młodych
projektantów ma za zadanie
stworzyć konkretne koncepcje
zagospodarowania i aktywizacji
kluczowych lokalizacji w przestrzeni
publicznej wybranej miejscowości.
Studenci śląskich uczelni,
pod okiem ekspertów, przez
siedem dni mieszkają i pracują
w danym miejscu starając się jak
<strong>na</strong>jlepiej je zrozumieć, by móc
zaproponować korzystne rozwiązania
projektowe. Intensywny
tydzień wypełniony jest rozmowami
z mieszkańcami, dyskusjami
i wizytami terenowymi.
W programie warsztatów są też
wykłady otwarte, prezentujące
różne aspekty związane z przestrzenią
publiczną. Mają one zainspirować
do odmiennego myślenia
o a<strong>na</strong>lizowanej miejscowości,
zmiany sposobów diagnozowania
trudności z jej funkcjonowaniem,
spojrzenia <strong>na</strong> lokalne
wyzwania w szerszej perspektywie
oraz uświadomienia roli partycypacji
mieszkańców w procesie
przemian.

University, spend seven days
living and working in a particular
urban area in an attempt to learn
and understand it in such a way
so as to be able to propose suitable
design solutions. This intensive

with local residents, discussions
and fieldwork. The workshop also
includes open lectures, presenting
different aspects of public
space. They form an inspiration to
think differently and laterally
about localities concerned and
their function, change the manner
in which problems are diagnosed,
and look at local challenges in
a broader perspective with an
awareness of the role its citizens
play in the process of change.

The “Design w terenie 2011!”
Workshop was held in Mstów,
the town with the year's winning
bid. The problems faced by the
community, relating to its development,
the organisation of
public space, the influx of new
residents as well as its enormous

wyboru.
Mstów, niegdyś z przywilejami
miejskimi, jest stolicą gminy wiejskiej.
Położony w województwie
śląskim, 12 km <strong>na</strong> wschód od
Częstochowy, <strong>na</strong>d brzegami Warty,
liczy ok. 2000 mieszkańców.
Z wielu powodów to urokliwe
i atrakcyjne miejsce, m.in. dzięki
malowniczym pejzażom zakoli
pobliskiej rzeki i Wyżyny Krakowsko-Wieluńskiej,
jak również
z uwagi <strong>na</strong> zabytkową zabudowę,
z zachowanym średniowiecznym
układem urbanistycznym,
czy warownym zespołem klasztornym.
W ostatnich latach charakter
wsi zmienia się z rolniczego
<strong>na</strong> turystyczny.
Zespół „Design w terenie!” poprowadziło
dwóch ekspertów:

wizyt i rozmów z mieszkańcami,
zespół „Design w terenie!” intensywnie
zapoz<strong>na</strong>wał się ze specyfiką,
potrzebami i możliwościami
Mstowa, widzianymi oczami jego
rezydentów. Owocem serii wywiadów
była wycieczka po <strong>na</strong>jważniejszych
punktach, jak rynek,
pozostałości dziewięt<strong>na</strong>stowiecznych
stodół, tereny rekreacyjne
<strong>na</strong>d Wartą, miejscowe sady, fabryka
Demar. Wieczorne sesje kreatywne
oraz wykłady dostępne
dla wszystkich prowokowały do
dyskusji i planów <strong>na</strong> przyszłość.
W efekcie utworzono listę <strong>na</strong>jbardziej
istotnych problemów
i szans rozwoju, obejmujących
untapped potential, formed the
basis of its selection.
Mstów, once a town, is now a
rural municipality. Located in the
Silesian region, on the banks of
the Warta River, 12 km east of
Częstochowa, it boasts a population
of about 2000. With the nearby
river meandering through the
picturesque landscape and the
Cracow-Wielun Upland, Mstów is
a charming and attractive locality.
The town's medieval urban
layout and fortified mo<strong>na</strong>stery
which have stood the test of
time, add to the charm. In recent
years the character of the village
has changed from agricultural to
tourism-based.
The “Design in the field!” team
was led by two experts: Michael
Stangel, urbanist, lecturer at the
Department of Urban and Regio<strong>na</strong>l
Planning within the Faculty of
Architecture of the Silesian Uni-
versity of Technology, University
of Silesia.
Workshops
From day one, through visits and
interviews with residents, the
“Design w terenie!” team intensively
worked on becoming acquainted
with the specific needs
and possibilities for Mstów, as
seen through the eyes of its residents.
The results of this series of
interviews was a tour of the main
points on the map of the township,
such as the market square,
the remains of barns dating back
to the nineteenth-century, recreatio<strong>na</strong>l
areas on the Warta River, local
orchards and the Demar plant.
The evening sessions encouraged
creativity and lectures, which
were open to all, provoked discussion
and plans for the future.
The result included the creation
of a list of the most important

pozwoliły zdefiniować
wizję Mstowa jako miejsca unikatowego,
łączącego tradycję z nowoczesnością,
możliwością wypoczynku
i smakowania lokalnych
specjałów. Mstowianie
chcieliby żyć w miejscu, z którego

river. Interviews with residents allowed
the team to define a vision
of Mstów as a unique place, combining
tradition with modernity,
offering the possibility to relax

mogliby być dumni i z<strong>na</strong>leźć tutaj
pracę dla siebie oraz swoich rodzin.
Skupiono się <strong>na</strong> trzech aspektach
rozwoju Mstowa:
1. Szlak turystyczny – grupa opracowująca
problemy przestrzeni
rekreacyjnej postawiła sobie za
cel zaproponowanie rozwiązania,
które umożliwi poprowadzenie
odwiedzających przez <strong>na</strong>jważniejsze
punkty w gminie.
2. Obszar zabytkowych stodół –
– tutaj obmyślano sposób <strong>na</strong>dania
ruinom nowej funkcji, by podkreślić
ich wyjątkowość.
3. Ożywienie Gminnego Ośrodka
Kultury i rynku – uczestnicy zobaczyli
szansę rozwoju tych miejsc
poprzez powiązanie różnych
aktywności z tego obszaru.
Konsultacje przygotowanych rozwiązań
projektowych pozwoliły
określić które z nich z<strong>na</strong>jdują
aprobatę wśród mieszkańców
oraz stwarzają możliwości dalszej
ewolucji. Pod wieczór 18 października
2011 roku, <strong>na</strong> rynku
w Mstowie – przestrzeni dostępnej
dla wszystkich, otwarto wystawę
prezentującą wyniki warsztatów.
Pokazano trzy koncepcje:
1. Projekt szlaku turystycznego,
składającego się z sześciu miejsc
<strong>na</strong>wiązujących do różnych sfer
życia – kultury, wyciszenia, folkloru,
refleksji, sportu, rekreacji i his-

There were three areas of focus
for the development of Mstów:
1. Tourism trails – the team in
charge of developing recreatio<strong>na</strong>l
space set itself an objective to
propose a solution that would
lead visitors through the main focal
points within the community.
2. The area of medieval barns –
– here the group devised a way
in which to feature the ruins and
highlight their uniqueness.
3. The revival of the Municipal
Cultural Centre and the market
square – participants saw the opportunity
to develop these sites
by linking different activities from
within the area.
Consultations carried out
amongst the residents regarding
the design solutions prepared
by the teams helped determine
which ideas gained their approval
and therefore creating the
opportunity for further development.
On the evening of
18 October 2011, the market
square in Mstów hosted an exhibition
presenting the workshop
results. Three ideas were brought
to the forefront:

okolica oraz ekologiczny sposób
funkcjonowania to główne atuty
rekomendowanej odmiany i wykorzystania
tej przestrzeni.
3. Ożywienie mstowskiego rynku
oraz zaadaptowania wewnętrznego
podwórza Gminnego Ośrodka
Kultury osiągnięte np. poprzez
może się zmienić. Choć rezultaty
„Design w terenie!” nie dają możliwości
<strong>na</strong>tychmiastowej odmiany,
stanowią bardzo dobry początek.
Przeprowadzo<strong>na</strong> a<strong>na</strong>liza oraz wypracowane
wstępne koncepcje
projektowe pokazują potencjał
gminy i kierunki rozwoju, mogące
w przyszłości przeobrazić to miejsce
jeśli jej władze będą podążać
tym śladem.
Design Silesia
„Design Silesia II” to część projektu
zapoczątkowanego w 2010 roku,
którego głównym celem jest
przybliżenie przedsiębiorcom,
samorządom oraz środowisku
akademicko-<strong>na</strong>ukowemu tematu
designu i zachęcanie do wdrażania
innowacji poprzez design.
Kontynuując rozpoczęte w pierwszej
edycji przedsięwzięcia pn.
1. Tourism trail project, consisting
of six sites connected to different
areas – culture, tranquillity, folklore,
reflection, sport, recreation and
history. On the map, the proposed
trail forms a letter “M”. Each of the
points of the route is specially
designed to include seating, information
about current point on
the trail, and the remaining five.
2. Eco Hotels, built on the remains
of the old barns, focusing on four
spheres- environmental, social,
cultural and economic. Local, <strong>na</strong>tural
products, quiet neighbourhood,
and environmentally sound
operation were the main advantages
of the recommended changes
and utilisation of this space.
3. Revival of the market square in
Mstów and the adaptation the inter<strong>na</strong>l
courtyard of the Municipal
members and the community.
As a result, designers have not
only acquired data for further
work, but left residents with a
strong belief that Mstów can
change. Although the results of
“Design w terenie!” have not provided
the township with immediate
results, it was a fantastic
start. The a<strong>na</strong>lysis and development
of the initial design concepts
illustrates the potential of
the municipality and direction
in which it can develop – areas
which may in the future be transformed
should authorities choose
to follow this path.

“Design Silesia II” is part of a project
initiated in 2010, whose main
goal is to bring entrepreneurs,
governments and academic and

efekcie nie tylko projektanci pozyskali
dane do dalszej pracy, ale
mieszkańcy uwierzyli, że Mstów

Cultural Centre (MCC) which could
be achieved through the social activities
of the township’s community
and its further activation. The
township’s community should engage
in altering the MCC’s public
space enlivening it with perso<strong>na</strong>l
and unnecessary household items
such as furniture, or renovating and
painting the walls as a social activity.
Such activity would encourage
the township’s citizens to treat the
space as their own and they would
therefore be more likely to use it.
The workshop created a unique
atmosphere amongst the team
scientific circles, closer to the
concept of design, as well as to
encourage the implement of
innovation through design. The
continuation of the project’s first

szedłem do raju i wielu szło ze mną, lecz gdy
zbliżyłem się do ogrodu, zaczęli znikać, a kiedy
szedłem przez raj, było ich przy mnie ledwo
kilkoro; ale kiedy stanąłem pod drzewem życia
i obejrzałem się, byłem prawie sam” 1
Baal Shem Tov said: ‘Once when I went to <strong>paradise</strong>
and many people went with me. the closer
I came to the garden, the more of them disappeared,
and when I walked through <strong>paradise</strong>,
there were only a few left. But when I stood
beside the Tree of Life and looked around,
I seemed to be alone’ 1

Od dwudziestu lat w Polsce dokonuje
się odrodzenie dawnej
kultury żydowskiej. Świadczą
o tym m.in. pielgrzymki chasydów
do miejsc, które przed wojną
stanowiły centrum tego fascynującego
ruchu religijnego. Każdego
roku do kilku polskich miasteczek
zjeżdżają tysiące ubranych
<strong>na</strong> czarno postaci. Przybywają
z Izraela i Stanów Zjednoczonych,
aby pomodlić się <strong>na</strong> grobie
cadyka – religijnego przywódcy
chasydów.
Polska <strong>na</strong>zywa<strong>na</strong> jest ojczyzną
chasydów. To właśnie z terenów
dawnej I i II Rzeczpospolitej wywodzą
się istniejące dziś w USA
i Izraelu dy<strong>na</strong>stie chasydzkie, to
w Polsce urodzili się <strong>na</strong>jsłynniejsi
cadycy. Za twórcę chasydyzmu
uważany jest Izrael ben Eliezer
z Międzyborza (ur. 1698), zwany
Baal Szem Tow, czyli „Mąż Dobrej
Sławy”.
Chasydyzm pojawił się w opozycji
do judaizmu ortodoksyjnego.
Różnił się od niego m.in. formą
zewnętrzną. Chasydzi popadali
w czasie modlitw w <strong>na</strong>dmierną
ekstazę, wydawali głośne okrzyki,
wykonywali gwałtowne ruchy,
tańczyli i śpiewali, aby z radością
wielbić Pa<strong>na</strong>. Podczas wspólnego
Hasidism appeared in opposition
to Orthodox Judaism differing
in aspects such as exter<strong>na</strong>l form.
During prayers, Hasidic Jews
would fall into ecstasy, exude
loud cries, perform jerky movements,
dance and sing in the
joyous praise of the Lord. They
did not spare drinking and eating
during commu<strong>na</strong>l festivities and
feasts. This was perfectly capucztowania

ortodoksyjni pogodzili się
z istnieniem „konkurencji” – chasydyzm

zachował podstawowe zwyczaje
i nie obalał przepisów wiary, tylko
je upraszczał.
Dla chasydów <strong>na</strong>jważniejszy jest
ich przywódca – cadyk (hebr.
„sprawiedliwy”). Stanowi opokę,
<strong>na</strong> której opiera się istnienie świata,
jest źródłem wiedzy religijnej.
Jego słowa są słowami Boga,
a <strong>na</strong>uka, czyny i gesty obiektem
religijnej kontemplacji i wzorem
do dosko<strong>na</strong>lenia. Cadyk jest łącznikiem
między niebem a ziemią.
Jego cudowności moż<strong>na</strong> doświadczyć
podczas pielgrzymek
i osobistych audiencji. Niektórzy
chasydzi wierzyli, że w przyszłym
świecie każdy z nich dostanie taki
obszar łąk i lasów, jaki przebył
podczas pielgrzymek do swego
cadyka. W XIX w. godność cadyka
stała się dziedzicz<strong>na</strong>: po zmarłym
cadyku funkcję obejmował jego
syn lub brat. Tak tworzyły się
dy<strong>na</strong>stie cadyków.
Najsłynniejsze dwory chasydzkie
tworzyli tak słynni cadycy, jak

in Poland. This is reflected in the
Hasidic pilgrimages to places that
before the war were the centre of
this fasci<strong>na</strong>ting religious movement.
Every year, several Polish
towns attract thousand people
dressed in black. They come from
Israel and the United States to
pray at the grave of the tzadik –
– the religious leader of Hasidim.
Poland is known as the home of
Hasidim. It is from what was once
the 1st and 2nd Republic that
the Hasidic dy<strong>na</strong>sties in the USA
and Israel were born. The most
famous tzadikim were born in
Poland. The founder of Hasidism
is regarded as being Israel ben
Eliezer from Międzybórz (b. 1698),
known as the Baal Shem Tov, the
“Master of the Good“.

the film "Austeria". With time, the
Orthodox Jews came to terms
with the existence of “the competition“
– Hasidism became a folk
religion as it retained the basic
traditions of Judaism and did not
refute the rules of the faith, just
simplified them.
For the Hasidim, the most important
is their leader – the tzadik
(Hebrew for 'fair'). He is the rock
on upon whom the existence of
the world rests, and is the source
of religious knowledge. His words
are the words of God, and his
learning, his actions and gestures
are the object of religious contemplation
and one on which
to model improvement. The
tzadik is a link between heaven
and earth. His wonder can be
experienced during a pilgrimages
and perso<strong>na</strong>l audiences. Some
Hasidim believed that in the
next world, each of them would
receive the equivalent in
meadows and forests that they
have covered in pilgrimages to
their tzadik. In the nineteenth
century being a tzadik became
hereditary and was passed down
to his son or brother. And in this
manner, tzadikim dy<strong>na</strong>sties were
formed.

z Lubli<strong>na</strong>”, Jakub Izaak z Przysuchy,
Lewi Izaak z Berdyczowa,
Nachman z Bracławia. Z<strong>na</strong>nymi
ośrodkami chasydów były też:
Bełz, Kock, Aleksandrów Łódzki,
Bobowa i Góra Kalwaria.
Mniej więcej od dwudziestu lat
chasydzi przybywają do Polski
regularnie, indywidualnie lub
grupowo. Celem ich pielgrzymek
są głównie trzy miejscowości: Leżajsk,
Lelów i Bobowa. Przybywają
tam, aby przy grobie zmarłego
cadyka świętować tzw. „jorcajt”,
czyli rocznicę jego śmierci. Modlą
się i zostawiają <strong>na</strong> jego grobie
karteczki z modlitwami, tzw. „kwitełech”.
Wierzą, że w taki dzień
dusza zmarłego cadyka <strong>na</strong>wiedza
miejsce jego spoczynku.
„Jorcajty” coraz częściej ściągają
zwykłych turystów, którzy przez
chwilę mają okazję przenieść się
w świat jaki istniał <strong>na</strong> tych ziemiach
do 1939 roku. Od ra<strong>na</strong> do
wieczora ulice i place miasteczek
wypełniają ubrane w czarne kaftany,
białe pończochy i jarmułki
postacie, swym wyglądem przypomi<strong>na</strong>jące
dawnych bohaterów
książek Singera. Jeszcze do niedaw<strong>na</strong>
chasydów widywało się
w Polsce tylko w filmach o tematyce
historycznej.
Chasydzi nocują zazwyczaj
u zaprzyjaźnionych polskich rodzin.
„Jorcajty” przypadają
w różne dni i miesiące: w Lelowie
<strong>na</strong> przełomie stycznia i lutego,
w Leżajsku w marcu, w Bobowej
w czerwcu. Dokład<strong>na</strong> data ustala<strong>na</strong>
jest zawsze według kalendarza
żydowskiego.
Jednym z <strong>na</strong>jsłynniejszych cadyków
był Elimelech z Leżajska
(zm. 1786). Podobno leczył chorych,
rozmawiał ze zwierzętami,
wypraszał u Boga łaski dla wiernych:
dostatnie życie, szybką
śmierć, miłość, płodność i pogodną
starość. Kiedy w czasie wojny
hitlerowcy rozkopali jego grób,
aby wydobyć rzekome skarby,
Elimelech „postraszył” ich otwartymi
oczami.
The most famous Hasidic courts
were formed by famous tzadikim
such as Elimelech of Lezajsk, Jacob
Isaac Horowitz, known as the
“Seer of Lublin“, James Isaac of
Przysucha, Levi Yitzchak of Berdichev,
Nachman of Bratslav. Other
well-known centres of Hasidism
were: Belz, Kock, Alexanders of
Lodz, Bobowa and Gora Kalwarii.
For around the last twenty years,
Hasidim have been regularly coming
to Poland individually or in
groups. The goal of their pilgrimages
have been focused on three
areas: Leżajsk, Lelów and Bobowa.
They travel there to the tomb of
a deceased tzadik to celebrate
what’s known as “Yahrzeit“ or the
anniversary of the tzadik’s death.
They pray and leave a card on
his grave with prayers, so called.
'kwitełech'. They believe that on
that particular day, the soul of the
deceased tzadik haunts his place
of rest.
“Yahrzeit“ are increasingly more
often attracting tourists, who
for that brief moment have the
opportunity to travel back into a

until 1939. From morning till night
the streets and squares of the
towns are a sea of black jackets,
white stockings and yarmulkes,
like characters straight out of old
books by Singer. Until recently,
Hasidim in Poland were only to
be found in movies of a historical
<strong>na</strong>ture.
Hasidim are usually put up by
friendly Polish families. “Yahrzeit“
fall on different days and months:
in Lelów in late January and
February, in Lezajsk in March, and
in Bobov in June. The exact dates
are always determined by the
Jewish calendar.
One of the most famous tzadikim
was Elimelech of Lezajsk (d. 1786).
He apparently cured the sick,
spoke with animals, obtain graces
for the faithful from God: a life
of ease, early death, love, fertility
and a carefree old age. When
during the war, the Nazis dug up
his grave to get to the alleged
treasure buried there and Elimelech
“scared them“ because apparently
his eyes were open.

Londynie. Bobowa słynie
z drewniano-kamiennej sy<strong>na</strong>gogi.
Po renowacji umieszczono w niej
cenną kolekcję judaików.
Coraz więcej żydowskich pielgrzymów
przyciąga Lelów koło
Częstochowy. W 1987 roku od<strong>na</strong>leziono
tam grób cadyka Davida
Biederma<strong>na</strong> (zm. 1814). Wkrótce
<strong>na</strong> jego grobie powstanie wspaniały
ohel.
Przyjazdy chasydów to wielkie
przedsięwzięcie. Od samego
początku wsparcia fi<strong>na</strong>nsowego
i organizacyjnego udziela im
powstała w 1983 roku Fundacja
Rodziny Nissenbaumów. Kupowała
dla nich łóżka i materace,
organizowała transport i noclegi,
sprowadzała koszerne jedzenie
z zagranicy. Z czasem ogrodziła
cmentarze w Bobowej i Lelowie,
a w Leżajsku wyremontowała
ohel cadyka Elimelecha i częściowo
ogrodziła cmentarz. Od dzie-
sięciu lat chasydom pomaga też
„Fundacja Chasydów” z Leżajska
i Fundacja „Chabad Lubawicz”
z Warszawy.
Chasydzi przywożą do Polski
własne, koszerne jedzenie. Na
miejscu mają do dyspozycji koszerne
kuchnie, koszerne <strong>na</strong>czynia
i sztućce, mykwę, salę modlitw.
Na ulicach tańczą i śpiewają
dawne, chasydzkie pieśni. Najważniejszym
punktem ich pobytu
są wspólne modły przy grobie
cadyka. Trwają one kilka godzin,
a po ich zakończeniu wszyscy
zasiadają do wspólnej uczty.
Tradycja „jorcajtów” wrosła już <strong>na</strong>
stałe w życie polskich miasteczek.
Przypomi<strong>na</strong> o ich zapomnianej,
żydowskiej historii i jest kolejną
atrakcją dla spragnionych nowych
wrażeń turystów.

Another famous tzadik was
Solomon Halbersztam (d. 1906)
of Bobowa (Małopolska region).
Thousands of his supporters now
live in New York, Ca<strong>na</strong>da, Antwerp
and London. Bobowa is famous
for its sy<strong>na</strong>gogue of wood
and stone. After the restoration a
valuable collection of Judaica was
placed housed there.
More and more Jewish pilgrims
are visiting Lelów, near Czestochowa.
In 1987, the grave of
Tzadik David Biederman (d. 1814)
was found. A stunning Ohel will
adorn his grave.
These journeys of Hasidim are a
huge undertaking. The Nissenbaum
Family Foundation from
the very beginning of the fi<strong>na</strong>ncial
and organizatio<strong>na</strong>l support
they gave was founded in 1983, It
bought beds and mattresses for
the pilgrims, arranged transportation
and lodging, imported
kosher food from abroad. In
time, the Foundation fenced the
cemeteries in Bobow and Lelow.
In Lezajsk, the Foundation renovated
the ohel of tsadik Elimelech
and partially fenced the cemetery.
For the past ten years it also
supports the “Foundation of
the Hasidim“ of Leżajsk and the
“Chabad Lubavitch“ Foundation
in Warsaw.
The Hasidim bring their own,
kosher, food to Poland. A kosher
kitchen with kosher dishes and
cutlery, a mikvah and a hall of
worship are available on site.
There’s dancing in the streets and
old Hasidic songs are sung. The
highlight however, is the possibility
to participate in common
prayers at the grave of the tzadik.
These last several hours and are
followed by a shared feast.
The tradition of “Yahrzeit“ is
permanently rooted in the life
of Polish towns and serves as a
reminder of the forgotten, Jewish
history and is an attraction
for tourists eager to experience
something new.

Śląskiej wręczono <strong>na</strong>grody w konkursie
„Śląska Fotografia Prasowa” (ŚFP), będącym
jednym z <strong>na</strong>jważniejszych dorocznych
przeglądów fotografii w regionie. Organizatorami
przedsięwzięcia są Biblioteka Śląska
oraz Syndykat Dziennikarzy Republiki
Czeskiej.
On 15 March 2012, the awards ceremony for
“the Silesian Press Photo” competition, one
of the most important photo reviews in the
region, was held at the Silesian Library. The
Silesian Library and the Syndicate of Jour<strong>na</strong>lists
of the Czech Republic are the joint
organisers of this annual event.

Do fi<strong>na</strong>łu jurorzy zakwalifikowali
155 prac 25 autorów, które moż<strong>na</strong>
było oglądać <strong>na</strong> wystawie w holu
głównym Biblioteki Śląskiej. Zdjęcia
oceniało jury w składzie:

z<strong>na</strong>lazły ważne wydarzenia
ubiegłego roku zarówno
w kraju (m.in. wybory parlamentarne),
jak i za granicą (rewolucja
w Libii). Stosunkowo niewiele

The vast majority of submitted
photos revolved around the
theme of community and documented
the everyday trials and
tribulations of the region’s inhabitants.
The works documented
significant <strong>na</strong>tio<strong>na</strong>l (eg. parliamentary
elections) as well as
inter<strong>na</strong>tio<strong>na</strong>l events (eg. the revolution
in Libya). As was noted by
the jury, a relatively small number
of photos documented cultural
events (with the exception of
regio<strong>na</strong>l customs, which are now
standard in Silesian press jour<strong>na</strong>lism).
First prize in the Silesian Press
Photo 2011 competition was

award. The Silesian Library Readers’
award, funded by the family

The Jan Suchan Award was presented
to Sebastian Kucharz for
his series Przełamać bariery (eng:
Breaking Down Barriers), which
focused on a wheelchair-bound

m.in. albumów fotografii Strój
ludowy w Polsce (1994), Krajobraz
z kapliczką (1997) oraz Jacyś ludzie.

Warto dodać, że przyszłorocz<strong>na</strong>,
dziesiąta edycja Śląskiej Fotografii
Prasowej zostanie wzbogaco<strong>na</strong>

It’ worth noting that next year’s
tenth edition of the Silesian
Press Photo competition will be
extended to include a new competition
category – apart from

Co króluje <strong>na</strong> stołach mieszkańców województwa
śląskiego Wydawałoby się, że skojarzenie
może być tylko jedno – oczywiście tradycyjny
„łobiod”, czyli rolada, „modro” kapusta i kluski.
Taka odpowiedź przychodzi do głowy zdecydowanej
większości Polaków. Tymczasem nic
bardziej mylnego!
What are the dishes that reign supreme on
Silesian dinner-tables The answer seems obvious
– the traditio<strong>na</strong>l dinner of meat roulade,
red cabbage and dumplings. The vast majority of
Polish people would think so. But nothing could
be further from the truth!
Województwo śląskie swoim
mieszkańcom i turystom ma do
zaproponowania wiele więcej niż
potrawy rodem z Górnego Śląska.
Choć kuchnia tego obszaru jest
<strong>na</strong>jbardziej z<strong>na</strong><strong>na</strong> i rozpoz<strong>na</strong>wal<strong>na</strong>,
to z pewnością nie pojawia się
w domach wszystkich mieszkańców
regionu. Co więcej, również
wiele tradycyjnych śląskich
potraw z<strong>na</strong>nych jest tylko garstce
ludzi. Na szczęście, dzięki utrzymującej
się od kilku lat modzie <strong>na</strong>
tradycyjne smaki i propagowaniu
tradycyjnych potraw przez koła
gospodyń wiejskich oraz wiele
instytucji i restauratorów, coraz
więcej osób sięga do starych książek
kucharskich i kultywuje lokalne
zwyczaje kuli<strong>na</strong>rne. A tych
„lokalności” w województwie
śląskim jest <strong>na</strong>prawdę dużo.
Strukturę kuchni tego regionu
trafnie uchwyciła Han<strong>na</strong> Szymanderska,
z<strong>na</strong>wczyni kuchni polskiej,
autorka książek kucharskich
i jurorka wielu imprez kuli<strong>na</strong>rnych,
w tym Festiwalu „Śląskie
Smaki”. We wstępie do wydanego
<strong>na</strong>kładem Śląskiej Organizacji Turystycznej

more to offer its inhabitants and
visitors, than dishes only from Upper
Silesia. Although the cuisine
from this area is most well-known
and recognisable, it most certraw
regio<strong>na</strong>lnych województwa

różnych wpływów i kultur.
W jednych miejscach silny wpływ
miała kuchnia niemiecka, w innych

dishes that are known to only a
handful of people. Thankfully,
with the promotion of traditio<strong>na</strong>l
dishes by groups such as country
women’s associations, institutions
and restaurateurs, traditio<strong>na</strong>l
dishes continue to be trendy.
More and more people are going
back to old cooking books and
are cultivating local culi<strong>na</strong>ry traditions.
And in the Silesian region,
there are many ‘local specialities’.
Han<strong>na</strong> Szymanderska, an expert
on Polish cuisine, author of cook
books and on the jury at many
culi<strong>na</strong>ry events – including the
‘Taste of Silesia’ Festival, aptly
summed up the structure of the
region’s cuisine. In the introduction
to the “Collection of recipes
from the Silesian Region”, she
wrote: Today, the Silesian region
is a blend of many influences and
cultures. In some areas, German cuisine
had a very definite influence, in
others Czech cuisine and there was
also the local cuisine – which was
equally rather poor and simple

czeska, a przecież była jeszcze kuchnia
miejscowa – i to zarówno dość
bied<strong>na</strong> i prosta kuchnia góralska,
jak i pożyw<strong>na</strong>, prosta kuchnia wiejska,
tłusta, obfita kuchnia górników
i rzemieślników, czy wykwint<strong>na</strong>
kuchnia myśliwska. Dziś wszystkie
koleje historii możemy wyczytać
właśnie z lokalnych specjałów. Ważne
by o nich pamiętać, bo stanowią
one o tożsamości mieszkańców i są
piękną wizytówką regionu.
Kuli<strong>na</strong>rne wędrówki po śląskim
Kuchnia śląskiego zachwyca nie
tylko mieszkańców. — W końcu
<strong>na</strong>jlepsze skojarzenia z województwem
śląskim wiążą się właśnie
z jego pyszną i bogatą kuchnią.
Roladę z modrą kapustą i gumiklejzami,
czyli śląskimi kluskami, od lat
z<strong>na</strong> cała Polska i pół świata. Czas,
żeby do powszechnej świadomości
weszły i inne specjały rodem ze
śląskiego — podkreśla Szymanderska.
Turyści, odwiedzający
ten region, z pewnością z chęcią
spróbują jurajskiej polewki, tradycyjnych
prażonek, czy pysznego
złotopotockiego pstrąga, przyrządzanego
<strong>na</strong> wiele sposobów.
Skosztują również cieszyńskich
ciasteczek, niepowtarzalnego
„murzi<strong>na</strong>” lub góralskich poleśników.
Muszą jed<strong>na</strong>k wiedzieć,
że takie potrawy istnieją i mieć je
gdzie zjeść. I tu pojawia się problem,
bo nie wszędzie te lokalne
pyszności są ogólnodostępne.
Często nie moż<strong>na</strong> ich dostać
<strong>na</strong>wet w gospodarstwach agroturystycznych.
By ich spróbować,
trzeba wziąć udział w lokalnych
festiwalach kuli<strong>na</strong>rnych, a te przecież
odbywają się – w <strong>na</strong>jlepszym
wypadku – kilka razy w roku.
Sytuację chce zmienić Śląska Organizacja
Turystycz<strong>na</strong>, która właśnie
tworzy Szlak Kuli<strong>na</strong>rny Śląskie
Smaki. — Chcemy, żeby w restauracjach
<strong>na</strong>szego regionu <strong>na</strong> stałe
zagościły lokalne potrawy. Każdy
turysta o nie pyta, a i mieszkaniec
śląskiego powinien mieć możliwość
spróbowania prażonek <strong>na</strong> Jurze,
prawdziwej kwaśnicy w Beskidach,
czy tradycyjnej zalewajki w Zagłębiu
— tłumaczy Agnieszka Sikorska,
dyrektor biura Śląskiej Organizacji
Turystycznej. Zapewnia
również, że utworzenie Szlaku
Kuli<strong>na</strong>rnego poprzedzone będzie
certyfikacją lokali, dzięki czemu
polecane potrawy <strong>na</strong>prawdę
będą przyrządzane według tradycyjnych
receptur.
Zjedzmy coś <strong>na</strong> Szlaku
Na Szlak Kuli<strong>na</strong>rny Śląskie Smaki
wejdą lokale gastronomiczne
z terenu całego województwa,
co gwarantuje, że w scertyfikowanych
restauracjach będzie moż<strong>na</strong>
spróbować lokalnych potraw ze
wszystkich zakątków regionu.
— Mam <strong>na</strong>dzieję, że oprócz
flagowych tradycyjnych smaków,
restauratorzy zdecydują się również
<strong>na</strong> serwowanie tych mniej popularnych,
co wcale nie z<strong>na</strong>czy, że mniej
smacznych dań — przyz<strong>na</strong>je Sikorska.
Czy to założenie się spełni
O tym przeko<strong>na</strong>my się już pod
koniec 2012 roku, kiedy to planowa<strong>na</strong>
jest i<strong>na</strong>uguracja Szlaku
Kuli<strong>na</strong>rnego Śląskich Smaków.

of miners and craftsmen, or the
refined cuisine of hunters. Today,
every step in history can be revisited
in the local specialities. It’s important
to remember them as they
constitute the inhabitants’ identities
and form a stunning showpiece for
the region.
Culi<strong>na</strong>ry trails through Silesia
Silesian cuisine delights not only
its inhabitants. Szymanderska
notes that the most positive association
people have with the
Silesian region is its tasty and rich
cuisine. Meat roulades with red cabbage
and Silesian dumplings are
well-known not only throughout
Poland but also half a world away.
It’s time for other local specialities
to join this stalwart of Silesian
cuisine. Tourists visiting the
region will enjoy tasting Jurassic
soup, traditio<strong>na</strong>l ‘prazonki’
(a potato dish), or the delicious
Zloty Potok trout, prepared in a
variety of ways. Then there are
also biscuits from Cieszyn, the
‘Murzinek’ chocolate cake, or
yeast and potato cakes from the
region’s mountain areas (polesniki).
But in order to try these
dishes, people need to be aware
that these dishes exist and have
somewhere to try them. And this
is where problems arise, as not
all the local delicacies are widely
available. They are most often
not even available at agritourism
facilities. In order to taste them,
visitors would need to participate
in local food festivals – and these
don’t take place every day – at
best, only several times a year.
The Silesian Tourism Organisation
would like to change this. It’s in
the process of creating a Taste of
Silesia Culi<strong>na</strong>ry Trail. — We want
restaurants to include local regio<strong>na</strong>l
dishes permanently into their
menus. Every tourist asks about
them and tourists and locals alike,
should be able to try ‘prazonki’ in
the Jurassic Upland, real sour-cabbage
soup in the Beskid Mountains,
or the traditio<strong>na</strong>l ‘zalewajka’ in the
Dabrowski Basin — says Agnieszka
Sikorska, Director of the Silesian
Tourism Organisation. She also
assures that prior to setting up
the Culi<strong>na</strong>ry Trail, restaurants will
be certified – and so the recommended
dishes will be prepared
according to traditio<strong>na</strong>l recipes.
Let’s have something to eat on
the Trail
The Taste of Silesia Culi<strong>na</strong>ry Trail
will include restaurants from the
entire region. This will guarantee
that certified restaurants will offer
local dishes from the farthest
reaches of the region. — I hope
that apart from the flagship traditio<strong>na</strong>l
dishes, restaurateurs will decide
to also serve the less-popular,
but by no means less tasty regio<strong>na</strong>l
dishes — says Sikorska. Will this
premise come true We’ll see
towards the end of 2012, with the
planned launch of the Taste of
Silesia Culi<strong>na</strong>ry Trail.

Najważniejszą czynnością po zimowym
okresie jest niewątpliwie
wymia<strong>na</strong> ogumienia. Dla wielu
właścicieli aut nie jest to oczywiste.
Jed<strong>na</strong>k ze statystyk wynika,
że około 15% kierowców zwleka
w tym przypadku. Bardzo istotne
jest, aby wymia<strong>na</strong> opon <strong>na</strong> letnie
<strong>na</strong>stąpiła w momencie gdy średnia
dobowa przekracza +10°C. Opony
zimowe przystosowane są do jazdy
w niskich temperaturach, a ich
konstrukcja zapewnia bezpieczną
podróż zwłaszcza po mokrej
i ośnieżonej <strong>na</strong>wierzchni.
Kolejną ważną rzeczą, związaną
z eksploatacją samochodu po
okresie zimowym, jest dokładne
umycie samochodu, przede

warto zweryfikować poziom

The most important thing to remember
is to change your tyres
after the winter season. For many
car-owners this unfortu<strong>na</strong>tely is
not obvious. Statistics show that
around 15% of drivers put doing
this off. It’s very important to
change to summer tyres when
the average temperature during
the day is more than +10°C. Winter
tyres are adapted to driving in low
temperatures and their construction
makes driving on wet roads
and snowy surfaces safer.
Another significant aspect related
to car-use after a winter season is
the fact that the car needs to be
washed very well – both the body
and the chassis. Particular care
should be taken in those hard-toreach
nooks and crannies where
there could still be some salt left
behind. Giving the car a thorough
clean is also a good moment to
take a closer look at the car’s paint
finish. If there’s even a tiny bit of
corrosion anywhere, it’s worth getting
rid of it straight away. You can
protect the paint finish by using a
special wax, which protects it to
some extent from scratches and
UV radiation.
After winter, you need to check
all the car’s fluid-levels. Now that
the weather’s getting warmer,
add windscreen washer fluid suitable
for summer. It’s better suited
for summer and has stronger
washing properties than the winter
one.
The next step is checking the level
of fluid in your radiator. In spring
and summer, the car’s cooling
system is exposed to higher temperatures,
so it’s worth making
sure that the radiator itself is clean
– get rid of the dirt and any bits of
sand or salt still on it.
Checking brake-fluid levels is a
necessity – this means checking
how much water there is in the
fluid and its boiling temperature.
If there’s more than 3-5% water,
then you need to replace the fluid.
The cost of getting this done is
relatively small – but the quality of
brake fluid directly influences the
efficiency of the braking system,
and in doing so, makes a huge difference
to the safety of all you and
your passengers.

Many people make the mistake of
putting heavy objects on the car’s
back shelf. If you brake suddenly,
those unsecured items can move,
or even fly through the windscreen.
Effectively, these objects
can become dangerous missiles,
putting all the car’s occupants in

If you’re heading off abroad, take
a moment to check if you have
everything you need – including
any items to fulfil safety requirements
in countries you may be
travelling through. For example,
from July this year, in France, every
car needs to have a breathalyser.
Czech police may check that you
have a: fluorescent vest, first aid
kit, a set of spare light bulbs and a
warning triangle.
In addition, before taking off on
your summer holidays, take a look
at your oil levels and add more if
necessary. Don’t forget that you
need to change the oil in your car
too! Check your manual to see
how often you should do this.
