Mardi Gras 

Fundraiser for 

Sunlight Homes 

It is New Orleans’ premiere 

party season and it’s coming 

to VillageWalk! It’s time to 

enjoy life, party, and have a 

good time! Get dressed up 

and get ready to party on 

Saturday, February 26 as we 

celebrate Mardi Gras with 

Cahula and Cream. Doors 

will open at 6:00 p.m. and 

close at 10:00 p.m. Dinner will be catered by Railhead 

Cafe’ consisting of Chicken Portobello over pasta, 

Seafood Gumbo; a New Orleans stew with shellfish, 

vegetables, okra, sausage and gumbo z’ herbs, red 

beans and rice, collard greens, and King Cake for 

dessert. This event is a fundraiser for Sunlight Homes, 

a safe haven for women and teens. Sunlight Home 

was founded in June of 1994 to help break the cycle of 

poverty and abuse for pregnant women and teens. This 

program affords hope and a bright future for women 

and their babies. We are hoping to have some silent 

auction items available. If you can help organize the 

fundraising efforts, please contact Michelle at 949- 

9909. For this special dance the price per ticket will 

be $30.00 with $5.00 going directly to the charity.

action for The Fight against Breast

Point Mall in Estero. We are looking

Murder Mystery Dinner Train 

Join the fun on Friday, January 14 as we take a ride 

on the Murder Mystery Dinner Train in Fort Myers! 

Boarding will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Colonial Stations 

in Fort Myers. Enjoy an elegant five course dinner with 

entree choice of Prime Rib, fresh seafood or chicken; and 

a presentation of their latest murder mystery sensation! 

The train features fine food, friendly service, table linens, 

white china, crystal stemware, candlelight and much 

more. Tickets are $65.00 each. A cash bar is available 

on the train for those wishing to partake of soft drinks, 

cocktails, fine wine or after dinner liquors. The train will 

return to the station by 10:00 p.m. All reservations must 

be received by Monday, January 3 by calling the HOA 

Office at 949-9909. No cancellations after that date. 

Directions to the dinner train may be picked up at the 

HOA Office window. 

Kayaking at Manatee Park 

Join in the fun 

on Sunday, January 

30 as we hit the 

waters of South West 

Florida in search of 

some exercise, birds, 

dolphin and manatees! 

We will be Kayaking 

from Manatee Park in Fort Myers down the Orange 

River and back. There will be a kayak instruction before 

we depart; so even if you have never kayaked before 

this trip is for you! Enjoy lunch in the park after the trip, 

choice of turkey on wheat, ham on white or a veggie 

wrap. Lunch comes with drink and dessert. $39.00 per 

person for this day of fun so don’t miss out. We will 

leave from VillageWalk tennis courts at 7:45 a.m. and 

return after lunch. Please sign up at the HOA Office by 

Tuesday, January 25. If our morning session fills up, we 

will add an afternoon paddle at 1:00 p.m. 

Wine Tasting & Sunset Cruise on the Naples Princess 

Thursday, January 27th 

5:00- 7:00 p.m. (boarding begins at 4:30 PM) 

An Evening of Wine Discovery! Join us on the beautiful 

Naples Princess (a three level 105 foot luxury yacht) as 

we cruise through Naples Bay into the Gulf of Mexico all 

while exploring wines from around the world (presented 

by Haskell’s of Naples). Enjoy a selection of heavy hors 

d’oeuvres and a beautiful Naples sunset during our tour. 

The cost is $50.00 per person and includes port charges, 

taxes and gratuity. Check payable to VillageWalk.

Fishing Trip with AWE 

We are hitting the waters on Wednesday, January 19 

with All Water Excursions as we go fishing! Our trip 

will be from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. in the Back Bay area. 

We will depart from Lover’s Key boat ramp. We need 

a minimum of 6 people to hold this price at $50.00. If 

we get over 6, then we will move to a larger boat that 

can accommodate 10. Please make checks payable to

Kowiachobee 

Animal Preserve Tour 

Friday, January 21 2:00- 4:00 p.m. 

Join us at the Kowiachobee Animal Preserve for 

an up close, personal and educational tour of some 

truly amazing animals. The Kowia sanctuary is home 

to over 85 animals (exotic, domestic and native) 

including: 9 big cats (Tiger, Jaguars, Leopards and 

Florida Panthers), Maras, Sugar Gliders, Tortoises, 

horses, reptiles, nocturnal animals, a baby wallaby 

and many, many more! Learn first-hand the interesting 

facts and history of these animals. The Kowiachobee 

Animal Preserve is a 501C3 non-profit agency which 

focuses on public awareness and education, as well 

as housing and caring for these animals. To enhance 

your experience, you may bring apple and carrot slices 

to feed some animals. Transportation on own. Kowia 

is located at 2861 4th Avenue SE Naples, FL 34117.

We are headed to a local Fort Myers attraction, 

The Calusa Nature Center! Our morning is filled with 

fun activities that will keep you moving.

Cost for this trip is $6.00 per person. $4.00 for

Group Cruise Get Together

If you are headed on the cruise February 4-7 then

You can meet and greet with other VillageWalk

Friday, February 4, a Garage sale list will be placed 

out in the Town Center for everyone to pick up. All 

participating homes will be listed, and a community 

map will be attached! All garage sale hosts must have 

their addresses into the Town Center by 12:00 noon 

on Friday, February 4 to make the listing. If you miss 

the deadline you are still permitted to have a garage 

sale, but will not be included on the handout. If you 

have friends or relatives you wish to attend, please plan 

ahead by putting them on the guest list for the day. 

Pub Crawl!

Francisco Motorized 

Cable Car, will pick us 

up right at VillageWalk

to Fort Myers Beach 

hitting all the hot spots. Coolers, snacks and beverages 

are allowed on the trolley. The tunes will be jammin’ as 

we get on and off the trolley all evening. The cost for 

the trolley is $20.00 per person based on a minimum 

of 30 residents. Please RSVP to the HOA Office by 

Monday, February 7. So don’t drink and drive, hop on 

the trolley and ride with us around the beach for this 

party! The trolley will depart VillageWalk at 4:30 p.m. 

from the Town Center and return around 9:30 p.m. 



Health Fair/Blood Drive/ 

Free Breakfast! 

Saturday, February 19 •9:00-11:00 a.m. 

Free Breakfast provided by Costco while supplies last! 

Join us in the Town Center on Saturday, February 

19 from 9:00-11:00 a.m. for a Health Fair, blood drive 

and FREE breakfast. Physicians Regional Healthcare 

will be on-site with their doctors to educate residents 

with hearing screenings, blood pressure and glaucoma 

checks as well as information on infectious diseases, 

gynecology and colorectal cancer. NCH Community 

Blood Center will be on-site to run a blood drive. We 

need 20 donors for this wonderful cause. If you are 

interested in giving back, please register with the HOA 

Office by Wednesday, February 16. Please register for 

the FREE breakfast as we need a count for planning 

purposes by Friday, February 18.

We are hitting the Ice

Spa. You will have a choice between chair massages, 

mini-facials, dry manicure, mini pedicure, and 

permanent make up consultation. The spa will provide 

breakfast items, juice and coffee to start the morning 

off on the right foot. Each participant will receive a 

$10 gift certificate to be used towards the next visit

Babcock Wilderness Tour 

On Friday, February 25 take a trip with us to 

Babcock Wilderness Ranch in Punta Gorda! Beginning 

at 10:00 a.m., enjoy a 90-minute Swamp Buggy Tour 

through the Babcock Ranch and Telegraph Cypress 

Swamp. Experienced guides offer in-depth descriptions 

of birds, animals, plants, and the cattle and horses 

that are raised on the ranch. Visitors will see panthers, 

alligators, and many other animals living in Southwest 

Florida. Tickets for this trip are limited and are $22.00 

per person. All reservations must be in to the Town 

Center on Monday, February 21. We will depart from 

the Bocce courts at 9:00 a.m. if you wish to carpool 

please let us know at time of reservation.

families, small group and couples! This 1 & 1/2 hour 

guided paddling adventure includes the kayak, paddle,

Bus trips 

Immokalee Casino 

Hop on the bus for a day of pressing your luck! We have 

Thursday, January 20 booked for the Immokalee Casino. We 

will depart from the Bocce courts at 9:00 a.m. and return around 

3:00 p.m. The cost is $20.00 per person and you will receive 

$30.00 in free play and a $5.00 food voucher. Photo ID is 

required and driver gratuity is not included. We need a minimum 

of 15 people registered to make this trip a go. Please sign up at 

the HOA Office by Monday January 17. Checks can be made 

payable to Corporate Coaches. Guests of VillageWalk residents 

are welcome to attend! For every person who signs up for this 

trip, Corporate Coaches will donate $1.00 to Sunlight Homes!

Myakka River State Park Day Trip 

Monday, January 17, 2011 • Airboat Tour, Bird Walk, Box Lunch 

in Log Pavilion, Tram Safari Tour and Canopy Walk 

A full day of nature and fun at the Myakka River State 

Park. Hop on the bus at 7:30 a.m. and enjoy the beauty 

this state park has to offer. Our day begins with a muffin 

and beverage en route. Once at the park, we will board 

one of the world’s largest airboats for a one hour tour 

where you will see an abundance of wild life (Alligators, 

Herons, Spoonbill, Cranes, Anhingas, Ibis, Egrets and 

more!). Next it’s off to the Boardwalk for the Bird Tour 

(self-guided). 

A box lunch follows in the log pavilion at noon with 

a choice of ham, roast beef or turkey on whole wheat or 

white or a veggie wrap (comes with chips, piece of fruit, 

cookie and beverage). At 1 PM we’re off on the Tram 

Safari Tour which travels off the park’s main roads into 

areas of flatwoods, prairies and marshlands, learning 

about the flora and fauna. The finale is our Canopy 

Walk which is literally a walkway through the treetops. 

The Myakka Canopy Walkway provides easy access to 

observe life in the treetops of an oak/palm hammock. 

The walkway is suspended 25 feet above the ground and 

extends 100 feet through the canopy. A tower soars 74 

feet in the air to present a spectacular view of treetops, 

wetlands and the prairie/hammock interface. Please 

note: you are not required to do the suspension bridge 

or tower on the Canopy Walk; you may enjoy trail only 

if so inclined. Cost is

3,600 bromeliads! After our guided tour of the gardens 

enjoy lunch at the famous Columbia Restaurant. There 

you will have the choice of; Merluza “A La Russa”; 

premium Merluza (fish) breaded with toasted ground 

Cuban bread, grilled and topped with lemon butter, 

chopped parsley and egg. Served with yellow rice and 

fresh vegetables, Palomilla; Marinated Top Sirloin cut 

very thin and quickly grilled. Topped with Mojo Crudo 

(chopped onion, parsley, and lime juice), served with 

Plantanos and Fries or Rice, or Arroz con Pollo; the 

traditional dish from Tampa’s Ybor City, one quarter 

chicken baked with yellow rice, green peppers, onions,

Expanding Horizons 

Please join Expanding Horizons for docent-led 

tour of the Naples Museum of Art on Wednesday,

The AARP offers the Driver Safety Program designed 

to reduce a driver’s risk for accidents and tickets. The 

classes serve as a refresher course but also present new 

changes in Florida laws. Defensive driving techniques 

are emphasized. Included are ways to adjust your 

driving due to age-related changes in vision, hearing 

and reaction time. Each driver over 55 taking this 

course is automatically eligible for a discount on auto 

insurance. There is no final exam; only attendance is 

needed. AARP membership is not necessary but affords 

a $2 discount on the $14 tuition. We need a minimum 

of 15 people to register by Friday, January 14 to make

Get Those Thinking Caps On

Have you ever wondered what those hotshot MBA 

students discuss at institutions like the Harvard 

Business School. Now is your chance. Frank Kearney, 

a resident of VillageWalk, will lead a one and a half 

hour class using an actual business case study and the 

techniques used at graduate schools such as the Harvard 

Business School. Frank is a Harvard Business School 

graduate; he will teach a business case study which 

he has taught in China and elsewhere. It is a short (3 

page) case which lends itself to group presentations and 

discussion. The case involves a simple problem with 

no clear-cut solution; in other words, a typical business 

case study. When Frank has taught this case in the past, 

the class enjoyed the challenge and had fun at the same 

time. You don’t need a business or finance background 

to participate. Ladies, you should also be aware that 

at business schools today, classes are typically equally 

split between men and women; so join in the fun. 

The class will cost four dollars to cover, printed 

materials and royalty fees. A minimum of 20 

participants is required in order for the class to 

be successful. This

A violent incident on a Nigerian beach has tragic 

echoes in posh London in Cleave’s beautifully 

staged if haphazardly plotted second novel. British 

couple Andrew O’Rourke and his wife, Sarah, are on 

vacation when they come across two sisters, Little 

Bee and Nkiruka, on the run from the killers who 

have massacred everyone else in their village and 

what happens there with this unlikely encounter, is the 

mystery that propels the novel. Two years later, Little 

Bee, in possession of Andrew’s license, shows up at 

Sarah’s house to learn that it is the day of Andrew’s 

funeral. He’s committed suicide.

Calling all amateur 

photographers! 

I am NOT a professional photographer, but I love 

photography and would like to learn more and improve 

my skills. 

I would like to have a Village Walk Photography 

Club where we could share our “great shots” and 

learn from each other. Perhaps we could even arrange 

outings where we might get together to shoot pictures. 

I am willing to be the organizer and contact person, 

but would appreciate all input from others. 

If there is enough interest, we could have an 

organizational meeting and see what happens!

VW Men’s Golf League 

The Third Year, “2010-2011”, of the 

Village Walk Men’s Golf League has 

commenced with play every Thursday 

through April 28, 2011 at Spanish 

Wells Golf and Country Club on Bonita 

Beach Road. 

The league has a core group of 36 

and has been growing every year. 

Membership is available throughout 

the year. A $50 enrollment fee per year 

must be paid at the VW activity office, 

Michelle Kithcart, prior to play. The 

fee is used to enroll you in the Florida 

PGA GHIN system to establish a handicap and for 

league administrative costs as well as socials. This is a 

fun league with the goals of: enjoying golf with little to 

no pressure, the great weather, and friendships. 

League play is on Thursdays through April 28, 2011 

with tee times between 10 am and Noon (may vary due 

to course special events). Members may play the course 

with carts whenever it is open at leagues rates. During 

November and December the league fee is $35 plus tax 

and January through April the league fee is $57 plus tax. 

If you bring a guest they will pay the normal SWCC 

Guest Fee.

!!SAFETY COMMITTEE NOTICE!! 

The Safety Committee is looking to revive 

Neighborhood Watch and to add members to the 

existing CERT committee. 

A Neighborhood Watch committee is an organized 

group of residents devoted to crime and vandalism 

prevention within a neighborhood. A neighborhood 

watch committee in VillageWalk is organized by 

street. The primary tool used is a prompt e-mail 

communication to residents. The Safety Committee 

is looking for a resident to head up the VillageWalk 

overall committee as well as street level representation. 

The Community Emergency Response Team 

(CERT) Program educates people about disaster 

preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and 

trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire 

safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and 

disaster medical operations. Using the training learned 

in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members 

can assist others in their neighborhood following 

an event when professional responders are not 

immediately available to help. CERT members also are 

encouraged to support emergency response agencies by 

taking a more active role in emergency preparedness 

projects in their community. The Safety Committee 

is looking for individuals to augment the VillageWalk 

CERT committee.

Recycling Cans Must be Stored 

Within the Garage 

As all our VillageWalk Residents have 

returned to sunny Florida, it is time to 

make room for the recycling cans in the 

garage. The restrictions state they are 

to be stored “out of sight of the streets, 

common areas and other units”: i.e. 

within the garage. Beginning January 10 the HOA will begin 

sending out violations for all recycling bins left at the garage 

door, placed in the beds beside the homes, or stored on the 

walkways of the units. Your cooperation is appreciated! 

Starting the New Year 

with Designated Smoking 

at the Resort Pool! 

VillageWalk is starting the New Year with a 

Designated Smoking Area at the resort pool. Signs 

will be posted at the designated area so check for them 

before lighting up. Smokers, please watch where you 

are discarding your cigarette butts. There are several 

receptacles available and we ask that these are used, 

instead of throwing them into the bushes and on the 

sidewalks. Please keep our beautiful Town Center and 

the Amenities free of litter.

and lights must be removed 

by January 10. Your cooperation

New Owners May Not Be Aware 

All items of décor placed outside the unit must 

first be approved by the Board by submitting an 

Architectural Change Form (located next to the Town 

Center HOA Office window) with photos of the 

items and their locations for Board review (Article 

XII. 12.2.O). In most instances items are approved, 

however this process serves as an important protection 

for the community aesthetics. If you have not 

submitted a request for items you have placed outside 

your home, please pick up a form from the HOA office 

and turn it in for review. The Architectural Change 

Committee (ACC) meets every third Thursday of 

the month. If you have any questions please contact 

Kathryn at the Town Center office: 949-9909. 

Save your coffee grounds. 

Take them and scatter them in the planting beds. 

They enrich the soil and balance the pH. 

Epsom Salts are 

magnesium sulfate. 

Your palm trees love as much 

magnesium as they can get. If you 

ever see fronds turning yellow, it’s 

a sign of magnesium deficiency. 

The landscape company will treat 

them, but you can help by picking 

up a bag of epsom salts the next 

time you’re at the grocery store. 

Sprinkle around the drip line 

(circumference equal to the reach 

of the fronds). If you ever see the 

gray frizzle top, that’s manganese deficiency. 

REMINDER 

No parking 

on the streets 

overnight 

between the hours 

of 11pm and 7pm. 

Emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire trucks 

must be able to access all homes. VillageWalk streets 

are not wide and do not allow for parking on the streets. 

Please be courteous and do not park on the streets over 

night. Don’t forget this is a towing community!

Neighborhood 

Street Meetings 

The only required involvement from the HOA for 

Neighborhood Street meetings is that the HOA to hold 

the street’s first Annual meeting. Going forward, the 

reps and volunteers shall act autonomously conducting 

their own meetings each year with some admin support 

from the management team. The following are revised 

guidelines for Street Representatives- 

1. Representatives are responsible for maintaining 

the scheduling and place for Annual Neighborhood 

meetings. This includes creating the Notice of 

Meeting and Proxy. 

2. Reps/Volunteers will be responsible for creating 

and getting the meeting notices/proxies out to all 

homeowners on streets. Templates are available 

from the office staff and reps may use the copy 

machine in the office. It is recommended that reps 

gather email addresses for each home to enable 

electronic transmission of Notices and Proxies. 

3. HOA will provide printed labels for correct mailing 

addresses. 

4. In cases where email is not available or known, 

Notices and Proxies will be mailed at the expense 

of the Representatives. Postage will be reimbursedreceipt 

will be required to do so. 

5. Reps/Volunteers will have access to the printing 

equipment to produce notices. 

6. HOA will provide envelopes. 

7. Representatives are responsible to manage their 

Annual Neighborhood Street meetings 

8. HOA should be provided copies of the Notice, 

Proxy and meeting minutes. 

9. HOA should be informed of any Neighborhood 

Representative changes. 

Gardenias love white vinegar 

Once a month, pour a cup or two around the plant. 

Vinegar neutralizes the pH level of the soil. 

Fertilization is fine... 

Fertilization is fine, but soil enrichment goes a 

long way. Perfect example – blue plumbago planted 

on the mound between palms in the back yard. The 

mound allows for drainage, so they never have “wet 

feet” (roots in water). They get full sun. They are 

fertilized routinely. But they look sickly and anemic 

Most likely, the soil has been sucked dry of nutrients. 

Best cure Pull back the mulch and enrich the soil 

with manure. Restore the mulch and then watch the 

sprouting of new growth. 

Lost Something 

Please bring your “lost” information to the HOA 

office for posting. The HOA will see to it that 

information is posted in all strategic areas throughout 

the Town Center. Please do NOT staple or attach 

information to trees or other surfaces in the community 

or Town Center. 

Landscaping Rules for Littoral Beds and 

Common Areas 

Littoral and upland lake 

bank beds are regulated by 

South West Florida Water 

Management District: no 

human activity is permitted 

in those areas (including 

trimming, plant installation, 

thinning, plant removal) without prior approval from 

South West Florida Water Management District. It is 

against the law to perform any activity in those areas and 

violators are subject to fine. 

Please do not trim any trees on homeowner property 

either as many trees must be trimmed in a certain way: for 

instance, tops can not be cut out of the Oak trees as it kills 

the tree. Please let the landscaping company and the HOA 

handle all such matters. Simply call the HOA to report 

your landscaping concerns and they will be addressed.

“Landscaping Tips” handout for anyone who is interested.
