Steve Bowen (DVM ’71) was recently awarded the Silver Buffalo<br />

Award, the highest award given by the Boy Scouts <strong>of</strong> America for<br />

distinguished service to youth on a national basis.<br />

Mitch Byrd (DVM ’95), owner <strong>of</strong> Equine Veterinary Services in<br />

Southern Pines, N.C., has acquired Aiken Equine Pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

Associations in Aiken, S.C. The practice, previously owned by Dr.<br />

John Haddon, will now be known as Aiken Equine Associates.<br />

Catherine McClelland (DVM ’83) retired from Hill’s Pet<br />

Nutrition after 16 years <strong>of</strong> employment.<br />

Ruth Dunning (DVM ’11) was named the Humane Society<br />

Veterinary Medical Association’s Veterinary Student Advocate <strong>of</strong><br />

the Year for 2011. HSVMA created the award to honor students<br />

who have promoted humane and respectful treatment <strong>of</strong> all<br />

animals.<br />

Sharon Nath (DVM ’03) joined the staff <strong>of</strong> Peachtree Hills<br />

Animal Hospital in Atlanta, Ga. Dr. Nath previously practiced at<br />

Buckhead Animal Clinic.<br />

Dorminy<br />

Arthur L. Dorminy (DVM ’50) was<br />

named the 2011 Distinguished Older<br />

<strong>Georgia</strong>n by the <strong>Georgia</strong> Council on<br />

Aging. A resolution was passed by the<br />

<strong>Georgia</strong> General Assembly recognizing Dr.<br />

Dorminy for this honor.<br />

Justin Oguni (DVM ’11) has joined Briarcliff Animal Clinic, a<br />

companion animal practice located in Atlanta.<br />

India Lane (DVM ’88) became the assistant vice-president<br />

for academic affairs and student success for the <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> Tennessee system in March 2011. Dr. Lane, a pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong><br />

medicine in the department <strong>of</strong> small animal clinical sciences, has<br />

worked at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Tennessee since 1997.<br />

McCommon<br />

George McCommon (DVM ’90) took part in a year-long<br />

humanitarian mission in Afghanistan with the National Guard’s<br />

<strong>Georgia</strong> Agricultural Development Team, where he assisted<br />

Afghanis in handling agricultural issues such as livestock, food<br />

storage and construction. Dr. McCommon is an associate<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> veterinary science at Fort Valley State <strong>University</strong><br />

and is the only Fédération Equestre Internationale veterinarian<br />

in the <strong>University</strong> System <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>.<br />
