2011 Phi Zeta Veterinary Honor Society Faculty Induction Ceremony<br />

Hines<br />

Dr. Murray Hines III, pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> pathology<br />

and head <strong>of</strong> the Tifton Veterinary Diagnostic<br />

and Investigational Laboratory (TVDIL), was<br />

presented with the Charles Dobbins Award<br />

for Excellence in Service. He was recognized<br />

for strengthening the laboratory’s historically<br />

solid relationship with producer groups and<br />

veterinarians by maintaining a “customer<br />

focused” culture, and for his involvement in a<br />

number <strong>of</strong> outreach activities.<br />

Dr. Sreekumari Rajeev, an assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor in infectious<br />

diseases based at TVDIL, was the recipient <strong>of</strong> the Outstanding<br />

Laboratory Service Award. Dr. Rajeev heads the bacteriology and<br />

mycology sections <strong>of</strong> TVDIL, and her laboratory is the only laboratory<br />

in the state <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> approved by the National Veterinary<br />

Services Laboratory for performing culture <strong>of</strong> Mycobacterium<br />

avium subsp. paratuberculosis, the cause <strong>of</strong> Johne’s disease in<br />

ruminants.<br />

Drs. Shannon Holmes and David Jiménez<br />

were co-recipients <strong>of</strong> the Outstanding Hospital<br />

Service Award. They were recognized<br />

for implementing new technologies in the<br />

Veterinary Teaching Hospital’s radiology service,<br />

such as voice-recognition s<strong>of</strong>tware that<br />

directly transcribes clinical records to the hospital’s<br />

electronically-based medical records.<br />

Holmes<br />

Dr. Michelle Barton, the Fuller E. Callaway<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Large Animal Internal Medicine, received the David<br />

Tyler Award for Advances in Teaching. Dr. Barton was recognized<br />

for her role in implementing the automated response systems in<br />

the CVM’s classrooms and for being a leader in implementing<br />

new technologies for instructional use.<br />

Dr. Robert M. Gogal Jr., an associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor in anatomy and<br />

radiology, received the Pfizer Award for<br />

Research Excellence for the quantity and<br />

quality <strong>of</strong> the research manuscripts he has<br />

produced in the last three years, as well<br />

as the service he provides to the scientific<br />

community.<br />

Dr. Andrew Park was the recipient <strong>of</strong> the<br />

John M. Bowen Award for Excellence in<br />

Gogal<br />

Research. Dr. Park’s work aims to describe<br />

observed patterns in animal diseases, including the emergence<br />

<strong>of</strong> macro-parasite drug resistance in ruminants, the evolutionary<br />

escape <strong>of</strong> equine influenza from vaccine treatments and the complex<br />

spatiotemporal patterns <strong>of</strong> epizootic hemorrhagic disease in<br />

white-tailed deer. He is an assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor in the Odum School<br />

<strong>of</strong> Ecology with a joint appointment in the department <strong>of</strong> infectious<br />

diseases at the CVM.<br />

Dr. Chad Schmiedt was awarded the Clinical<br />

Research Award in recognition <strong>of</strong> the<br />

progress he has made toward understanding<br />

the mechanisms <strong>of</strong> post-transplantation<br />

hypertension. Dr. Schmiedt is an assistant<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> s<strong>of</strong>t tissue surgery in the<br />

department <strong>of</strong> small animal medicine and<br />

surgery.<br />
