Kruger National Park Externship<br />

Program<br />

Rhinoceros worldwide are losing the<br />

race for survival, and despite increased efforts<br />

to prevent poaching, instances <strong>of</strong> slaughtered<br />

rhinoceros in South Africa are actually on<br />

the rise. In Kruger National Park, saving the<br />

remaining animals will mean relocating them<br />

to different areas within and without the park.<br />

The increased need for transportation <strong>of</strong><br />

these rhinoceros calls for improved transport<br />

conditions and reduced stress.<br />

To work toward safer and more efficient<br />

ways <strong>of</strong> transporting these rhinoceros, Kruger<br />

National Park and Veterinary Wildlife Services<br />

are <strong>of</strong>fering veterinary students the chance to<br />

study stress responses <strong>of</strong> rhinoceros on site<br />

in South Africa.<br />

Researchers hope to better understand<br />

the effects and extent <strong>of</strong> stress in these<br />

rhinoceros, and will use the results to work<br />

toward more efficient stress management <strong>of</strong><br />

the animals during relocation.<br />

Students are responsible for assisting<br />

with sample collection and analysis, neutrophil<br />

activity analysis, and rhinoceros capture.<br />

At the end <strong>of</strong> the externship, students<br />

summarize their research through a written<br />

report and an oral presentation.<br />

College <strong>of</strong> Veterinary Medicine<br />

International Program<br />

To promote the understanding <strong>of</strong> public and animal<br />

health from a global standpoint, the College <strong>of</strong> Veterinary<br />

Medicine <strong>of</strong>fers an International Program with an interdisciplinary<br />

Certificate in International Veterinary Medicine<br />
