Popuation Demographics Drivers of Population change Births • In 2008, there were 2,709 births in the City of Brimbank. This is the highest number ever recorded in the City of Brimbank, with a fertility rate of 1.90 babies per female. This is a significant increase on previous birth rates. And is above the Victorian average of 1.83, but still slightly below the national average of 1.97. 4 • The number of births in the City of Brimbank is expected to remain fairly steady over the next 30 years. About 2,500 births per year can be expected over the next 30 years. 3 Deaths • In 2008, there were 894 deaths registered in the City of Brimbank, for a standardized death rate of 6.1 deaths per 1,000 people, very close to the Victorian rate of 6.0. People moving in and out of the municipality • Over 8,000 residents moved out of Brimbank between 2001 and 2006. Almost all residents moving out of Brimbank moved to other areas within Victoria – most moved to the Shire of Melton (8,687 residents) and City of Wyndham (1,413 residents). 2 • People moving into the Brimbank area mostly came from the City of Maribyrnong, with 1,809 residents migrating into Brimbank. 2 • Movement out by age analysis shows that Brimbank looses population across all age groups, although the losses are particularly large among families with parents aged in their 30s and 40s, and children of all ages. There is minimal loss among 15-24 year olds. In all age groups, Melton Shire is the main area Brimbank looses population to. Among those aged 55+ years, retirement destinations such as the Mornington Peninsula and Gold Coast were popular. 2 • In terms of migration from overseas, between 2009 and 2010 Brimbank welcomed 1,748 new residents from overseas immigration (or 32.4% of the total number for the Western Region). During this period Brimbank welcomed the highest proportion of new migrants for the Western Region. 6 • Brimbank’s overall growth in population is supported by its birth rate and significant migration from overseas. 8
