Reported Incidences of family
violence
• During the 2009/10 period 3,930
family violence incidents were
recorded across the Western
Region. The number of incidents
reported in the Region has increased
by 10.1% since the 2008/09 period.
Of the number reported in the
Region, 1,412 (or 35.9%) incidents
of family violence were recorded for
the Brimbank municipality. Of that
number 323 (or 22.8%) resulted in
charges being laid. 15
• During the 2009/ 2010 year a high
rate of family incidents were reported
in Brimbank,with 759.6 incidents
(per 100,000 population) recorded,
compared to 718.0 for Melton, 684.0
for Wyndham, 580.7 for Hobsons
Bay, 553.6 for Moonee Valley and
429.2 for Maribyrnong. 649.9
incidents (per 100,000 population)
was recorded for the Victorian
State. 15
• Between 2008–2010 the rate of
reported incidents increased in
Wyndham (up 22.3%), Melton (up
4.2%) and Brimbank (up 3.5%),
whilst reports during the same period
decreased in Maribyrnong (down
13.9%), Hobsons Bay (down 0.1%)
and Moonee Valley (down 6.5%). The
rate of reports increased by 3.2% for
the Victorian State during the same
period. 15
• Between 2008 and 2009, over 400
women accessed family violence
services across the Western Region.
Of that number approximately
150 women living in Brimbank
were assisted by Women’s Health
West family violence services.
Compared to other Western Region
municipalities, Brimbank had the
highest number of women accessing
services, with Wyndham (130) and
City of Maribyrnong (80) registering
lower numbers. 16

Alcohol and road safety
• Brimbank has the forth highest
number of serious injury caused
by road accidents in the State,
with 241 people seriously injured
(or 3.6% of State total) during 2008.
Persons traveling as driver (50.3%),
passenger of car (13.6%) or as a
pedestrian (10.7%) were most likely
to be injured. 18

• Brimbank has a higher rate (4.13 per
10,000 people) of alcohol related
serious road accidents, compared
with both the State (3.42) average
and for the Western Region (3.44).
In comparison, the rates of alcohol
related assaults (7.44 compared
to 9.65), alcohol related family
incidents (11.99 compared to 15.80)
and medical hospital admissions
(19.59 compared to 26.92) are all
significantly lower for Brimbank than
the State average. 17
