Persons aged 0 to 4 years, City of Brimbank 2006
0–4 Early years
(as a percentage of total persons excluding overseas visitors)
• In 2006, Brimbank had 10,846 residents
aged 0–4 years (or 6.5% of the total
population, compared to 6.3% for the
Melbourne average). Residents aged
0–4 years decreased by 565 residents
between 2001 and 2006.
• By suburb, the highest proportion of
0–4 year olds were in the suburb of
Hillside (12.4%), although this was
only a small number of children as the
population of this suburb houses only
about 1,200 people. High proportions
of 0–4 yrs were also recorded for
Derrimut (9.4%), Sydenham (9.0%) and
Cairnlea (8.5%). In contrast, the suburbs
of Keilor Park (4.2%), Keilor (4.7%)
and Kealba (4.9%) had the lowest
proportions. 2
• By 2031, the number of children
aged 0–4 years living in Brimbank are
expected to increase by approx 800
residents (7%) to total approximately
11,300 residents. The distribution of
0–4 year olds will largely be centered in
the Southern areas of the municipality,
with the largest growth in the Derrimut
suburb. 3
Persons aged 5 to 11 years, City of Brimbank 2006
(as a percentage of total persons excluding overseas visitors)
Middle years
• In 2006, Brimbank had 16,314
residents aged 5–11 years (or 9.7%
of the total population, compared to
8.5% for the Melbourne average).
Residents aged 5–11 years declined
by over 1,000 people between
2001 and 2006. Only the suburbs
of Derrimut and Cairnlea grew due
to the suburbs attraction to young
families. 2
• Future increases of residents aged
5–11 years are expected to be
largely confined to the southern
part of Brimbank, with populations
of primary school age children
expected to peak around 2022, and
then stabilize and decline slightly
until 2031. 3
