SPECIAL EVENTS SPECIAL SERIES: LIVING GREEN IN NEEDHAM SPECIAL EVENT: NCE PARTNERS ON DIVERSITY SUMMIT Needham Community Education is proud to be a partner in support of the second annual Needham Diversity Summit on Saturday, October 19, 2013, 9am-3pm at Needham High School. Now in its second year, the Summit brings together community leaders, friends, neighbors, and students for this event designed to explore, foster, strengthen, and celebrate Needham’s diversity – of socioeconomic status, race, sexual orientation, gender, religion, ethnic identity, and age. The annual occasion aims to create a network of people committed to creating an equitable and welcoming town, and to challenging Needham residents to think in new ways about our evolving community. Any individual, group or organization (formal or informal) that is interested in learning more and taking action is encouraged to participate. Last year, over 125 community members attended the Summit; this year we look forward to even greater participation. We hope to see you there! NEW CLIMATE REALITY Quentin Prideaux, Presenter Join us for a thought-provoking presentation on the impacts and causes of climate changes, the actions we need to take, and what it all means for Massachusetts and the Northeast. The presenter, Quentin Prideaux, joined the Climate Reality Project in 2012, and was trained as a Climate Leader by former Vice President and Nobel Laureate Al Gore. He will discuss why some have been confused about the science, and although the subject is serious, the tone will be positive and lighthearted where possible. Despite overwhelming international scientific consensus on climate change, the global community still lacks the resolve to implement meaningful solutions. The Climate Reality Project exists to forge an unwavering bedrock of impassioned support necessary for urgent action. SPECIAL EVENTS / ART introduction and guide to residential solar energy for homeowners. We will explain the technology and terminology of solar PV (photovoltaic) and solar thermal systems, the criteria homeowners should consider before proceeding, and acquisition and financing options (lease versus purchase). We will also cover the questions that homeowners should ask of installers, and tips from Needham residents who have been through the process. Following the presentation, several Needham homeowners and installers will be available for questions and consultation. 10928 $10 1 Wednesday @ NHS Room 404 7-9pm November 6 The Green Needham Collaborative is a community-based organization that brings together Needham residents, businesses, community groups, municipal government, and schools to build a sustainable community through collaborative efforts on energy and the environment. NEW GREEN PRODUCTS: FOR YOU & YOUR HOME Jennifer Gibbs, Instructor Do you ever walk into a store and feel completely overwhelmed by the array of personal care and home cleaning products and their claims to be safe and natural If so, this class is for you! We will cover some of the most ubiquitous ingredients to avoid along with some great alternative products. You don’t have to be a scientist to understand how to read labels and make educated choices. This class will arm you with the tools you need to navigate the aisles of the drug and grocery stores with confidence that you are buying the best and safest products for yourself and your family. 10941 $25 1 Wednesday @ NHS Room 206 7-8:30pm October 23 ART NEW DRAWING & PERCEPTION Cara Studds, Instructor Join us to discover your own innate artistic ability! This class is designed for those with little or no prior drawing training who may have the mistaken notion that learning to draw well is only possible for those fortunate enough to have “born talent”. Those with some prior drawing instruction are also encouraged to join us to further develop their skills, as this alternative approach to drawing often leads to artistic growth. We will engage in projects that involve perceptual studies, looking at different types of sensory input to inform our drawing as it relates to perception of edges, spaces, relationships, lights and shadows, and linear perspective. Limited to 12. 10132 $109 7 Thursdays @ NHS Room 903 4:30-6:30pm October 3 – November 21 (no class October 10) WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP Lavonne Suwalski, Instructor The soft hues and translucent quality of watercolors make them a uniquely appealing medium. Join us as we learn various watercolor techniques and experiment with colors and textures. Drawing is an integral part of this class, but no experience is necessary – we will learn and practice in a fun, supportive environment! Please note that this class is open to both beginning students and those with some experience with watercolors.
