LANGUAGES LANGUAGES FRENCH: BEYOND BEGINNING Christine Mirabile, Instructor Join us to practice your French in a relaxed and supportive environment. This speaking-intensive course, conducted primarily in French, is designed for those with prior study of French who want to improve and build confidence in their use of the French language. Each class will be structured around a theme related to vocabulary, grammar, or culture, followed by a practice session. During the practice sessions, students will use what they have learned to perform reallife tasks such as getting a room in a hotel, along with other exercises to reinforce their French language skills. Prerequisite: Some high school or college level French. Returning students are welcome – new activities will be included this term. The required text is The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Learning French, Fifth Edition, by Gail Stein; ALPHA Publishers, ISBN-13: 978-1592579099 (often available used on Amazon). Directors such as Truffault, Goddard, and lately, Boone have been recognized and acclaimed globally. The goal of this class will be two-fold: to enjoy and discuss French movies and to practice your French. We will attempt to conduct the class mostly in French, so a basic knowledge and understanding of the language is required. What a wonderful way to practice your French – through the eyes of the movie camera! Join us for this course as we explore some great contemporary movies from France and Québec. Popcorn is optional! We will learn everyday vocabulary and useful expressions and practice simple conversations in class. The emphasis will be on speaking and listening. We may even sing! MUSIC / RECREATION MUSIC BEGINNING PIANO Bob Ponte, Instructor This beginning class is geared for those new to playing piano as well as those who may have played previously, but consider themselves to be at a beginning level. Each class will begin with a mini-lesson on one or more related concepts: rhythmic, technical, and music theory. You will then learn and practice on your own electronic keyboard station in the Midi Music Lab, wearing headphones, and working at your own pace. Students should be comfortable with an independent learning environment; some comfort with computers and technology is also recommended. This course will provide a great opportunity to learn beginning piano skills in a group setting; some valuable one-on-one instruction from the instructor will also be provided during the 8 weeks of the course. Note: while having a piano or keyboard at home to practice is helpful, it is not required. Please bring a flash drive to class to access course materials prepared by the instructor. Big in the ‘20s and bigger in the ‘60s, the uke is again the instrument of choice for great-sounding, portable music. Join us to learn the basics quickly and start playing songs. Simple chords and a focus on interesting strumming techniques mean that you’ll sound great after just one class, and you’ll soon have a repertoire ranging from modern pop to Tin Pan Alley. Join our trained naturalist guide as we launch our double kayaks and get a quick introduction to paddling strokes. We will slowly explore this extraordinarily wild section of the river, poking into coves and shallows to find common and not-so-common wildlife. We frequently see great blue herons, turtles, several types of ducks, a variety of songbirds, and perhaps an egret, cormorant, muskrat, river otter, and beaver. Our guide will also net-dip for benthic (bottom-dwelling) organisms like dragonfly larvae and water-boatmen. Your guide will show us the best viewing spots, identify the flora and fauna that we see, and describe how they fit into the intricate web of life on the Charles.
