West Allegheny to Host Gold Card Club Holiday Breakfast

High School Powder Puff Football Game
Raises $2,460 for Local Families in Need
The West Allegheny junior/senior
powder puff football game on November
1, 2012, raised $2,460 for West Allegheny
Christmas Families Charity.
The National Honor Society (NHS)
sponsored the fundraiser, which directly
benefits area families in need at the
holidays. Once families are identified,
students use the game profits to assemble
food baskets and purchase gifts
for the children.
The game resulted in a 26-0 senior win
and was held at the Joe P. DeMichela
Stadium. Suzanne Lambert is the NHS
faculty advisor.

Middle School Students
Participate in Calcu-Solve Competition
Eight middle school Horizon students
traveled to Duquesne University on
October 3, 2012, to compete in the Calcu-
Solve Competition sponsored by the
Allegheny Intermediate Unit. Designed
to test a student’s problem-solving skills
related to mathematics, the competition
allowed participants to compete individually
or as a team of four.
Under the leadership of middle and high
school Horizon’s teacher Allison
McClaren, participants included eighth
graders Sarah Behr, Sai Bhatte, Moira
French Students Celebrate Diversity
On October 8, 2012, Ms.
Crannell’s French II students
celebrated diversity by participating
in a Francophone (French
speaking) African food festival.
Students learned that the French
speaking world is not limited to
France and Europe, but includes
many countries from North and
Gibson, Yash Lahoti, Trent Michaels, and
Hannah Salvucci and seventh graders
Anden Acitelli and Billy Robertson.
This year’s competition drew more than
70 teams from 27 school districts throughout
the Pittsburgh area.

Students prepared a variety of dishes
for the celebration. Some of these
included North African tagine, Algerian
chili, Moroccan biscotti, North African
olive chicken, North African couscous
salad, and West African peanut ice
cream.

their culinary creations.
Middle School Students Dance for a Cause
Sixth grade students and teachers on the Superstar
Team at West Allegheny Middle School participated in a
dance-a-thon on November 7, 2012, to raise money for
the West Allegheny Family Support Committee. The
students raised close to $4,000 to donate to their cause.
Following the theme “Dancing with the Stars,” students
and staff dressed to reflect their favorite era of music.
Prizes were awarded to students for fundraising and for
best costumes and dancing.
Teachers coordinating the dance-a-thon included Bill
Britton, Nancy Lance, Gabrielle Monti, Jeannine Schuler,
Coleen Scott, and Nancy Watkins.
