Time to Play!
The 12th Annual Lubbock Meals on Wheels’ Tennis Tournament will be
here soon. Once again, the tournament is being hosted by several area country
clubs (LakeRidge, Lubbock & The Falls Tennis & Athletic Center) and The
McLeod Tennis Center at Texas Tech University. This weekend long tournament
is scheduled for July 25-27, and all proceeds benefit Lubbock Meals on Wheels.
The events include men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles. There
is also a junior tournament for players ages 18 and under. The junior tournament
events are singles only. New this year: Due to the large number of
entries, adult matches will begin on Friday, July 25. Also on Friday, players are
invited to The Falls Tennis & Athletic Club for check-in, door prizes, and dinner.
A casual bar-b-que dinner will be donated by J&M BBQ. Play continues
on Saturday and Sunday, and the weekend of events closes with an awards
ceremony at 6:00p.m., Sunday at The Falls. Awards will be presented for first,
second, and third place winners in both the adult and junior tournaments, and
refreshments will be served. The tournament director is once again Amanda
Knight, and the tournament referee is Clifford Hopping.
The entry fee, which includes invitations for two to the Friday evening
events and a tournament t-shirt is $30 per person and $15 for the second
event for adults, and $25 per person for juniors. The entry and
payment deadline is Tuesday, July 22. No late entries will
be accepted. A $5 fee will be charged to players if payment is
not received by the 22nd. Payments can be made to Lubbock
Meals on Wheels by cash, check, or credit card (VISA, Master-
Card, AmEx, Discover). To enter the tournament or for more

one of the biggest and best tennis tournaments around!

Hot Meals and Cool Wheels
Friday the 13th of June turned out to be a lucky day for our meal recipients!
Many local celebrities generously donated their time to deliver special hamburger
and fries meals to our recipients at the Big Wheels Deliver Meals’ promotion.
For the twelfth consecutive year, Lubbock Meals on Wheels and Sonic Restaurants
have joined together to help raise public awareness and involve local celebrities
in the mission of Meals on Wheels. Sonic Restaurants graciously donated
646 meals to feed all of the recipients, celebrities, and classic car drivers.
Each celebrity, paired with a classic or unique car and driver, left for an assigned
route from one of the twelve area Sonics. After all of the routes had been
delivered, everyone was invited back to the Meals on Wheels’ office to enjoy their
Sonic lunch along with refreshing drinks donated by Coca Cola Enterprises
and tasty ice cream sandwiches donated by Gandy’s.

Please bring recyclable aluminum cans to Lubbock Meals on Wheels. Regular trips are
made to recycle these materials, and the money received provides funds for programs. In
the future, Lubbock Meals on Wheels hopes to have a recycle trailer on site, but until then,
you can still help the environment and Lubbock Meals on Wheels by bringing your aluminum
cans to 2304-34th Street during office hours, Monday – Friday, 8a.m.-4:30p.m.

a note from the executive director
A late night phone call from our alarm company informed me there was trouble with the main freezer
in the building. Much to my chagrin, the problem was that the copper tubing going to the freezer had
been stripped off the outside of the building. We had lost the Freon coolant, and temperatures had
risen. Freon is extremely expensive at $25 a pound, and we lost $1500 worth.
The report to the police and insurance company alerted me to many other businesses, schools, and
new residential homes, having the same problem. I was incensed because LMOW is a charity providing
a basic human need, and this damage was senseless and intentional.
The people who live in this community responded to our plight. On behalf of the board of directors,
the staff, and myself, we thank everyone who sent a gift to help with the repairs and security measures
to prevent further vandalism.

Delta Theta Chi held their Annual
Garage Sale on April 25th and raised an
impressive $8,400 for Lubbock Meals on
Wheels! This amazing sorority has held
this annual sale for over thirty consecutive
years. Since 1994 they have donated
more than $65,000 to our agency. They

items to the sale and, of course,
to all of the shoppers who made the
event a success. Our sincere thanks goes

Volunteers deliver dry dog food and cat food every other week to
the pets of meal recipients who are unable to provide pet food
for their furry friends. Currently, about 80 dogs and cats are on
the Pet Food Program, so donations of food are always welcome!
Collecting pet food is also a great project for a service group,
organization, or business office. Anyone interested in donating
food can either bring it by Lubbock Meals on Wheels during normal
business hours (8 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. Monday
– Friday) or call (806) 792-7971 for more
information.

Volunteer to Feed the Need!
Looking for a great activity for you and your children or grandchildren
this summer If you are able to donate an hour of your time, you can make
an incredible difference in the life of someone who is homebound, elderly,
or disabled. Summer is here and that means many new volunteer drivers are
needed. Many student volunteers are not available in the summer, and many
other volunteers take well-deserved vacations during this time so substitute
volunteers are needed to fill in. A one-hour orientation is required. All of the
routes are within the city limits, have between 6 and 12 stops, and average
about 12 miles. It only takes about one hour to deliver a route, and you can
go as often as you choose. If you are unable to become a volunteer, you can
still help by passing along this information to your friends, family, civic club,
Sunday school class, mission group, or other organization to help us recruit
new volunteers!
A special opportunity available for businesses is our Corporate Volunteer
Program. Local businesses are encouraged to participate by allowing employees
to deliver meals during their lunch hour. This allows employers to
be civic minded without excessive loss of staff time. For convenience, the
required orientation may be held at your place of business. Approximately
30 businesses are currently involved in this program.
If you or your group or business is interested in signing up for the best
volunteer job in town, please call Barbara at 792-7971 and start making a
difference today.

The frozen quiche project was hugely successful during the holidays but please remember that
our quiches are available throughout the year. We also offer quiche gift certificates which allow
the recipient to pick out the flavor of their choice and pick up the quiche whenever convenient.
These delicious, cheesy quiches are perfect for bridal or baby showers, a weekend brunch
or just whenever you want a great and simple meal for your family. All you do is place your order;
pick it up at our office; pop it into the oven and enjoy! These 10-inch, frozen, ready-to bake
quiches come in five varieties including Quiche Mexicana (vegetarian), Ham & Cheese Quiche,
Spinach & Mushroom (vegetarian), Italian Sausage Quiche, and Quiche Florentine (spinach and
bacon). Quiches are $12.99 plus tax or two for $25.00 plus tax and can be ordered by phone, fax,
mail, or in person at our office. Keep us in mind when planning your next party, special occasion,
or quiet evening at home and order one (or more) of these fabulous quiches. You’ll know that
your purchase is not only feeding your family and friends but also the homebound, elderly, and
disabled in your community as all proceeds from the sale go to Lubbock Meals on Wheels.
