Interlaboratory trial for validation of ISO 17943
Water Quality – Determination of volatile organic compounds in water – Method
using headspace solid-phase micro-extraction (HS-SPME) followed by gas
chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS)
Dear colleagues,
Thank you very much for your interest and kind willingness to participate in the
interlaboratory trial for the validation that will be organized within the standardization project
for establishing ISO 17943. The standard is intended for the determination on volatile
organic compounds (VOC). Today I would like to give you some further information on the
design and the timetable of the trial which will be carried out in June 2013.
I would like to clarify that the trial is a validation exercise and not a proficiency testing trial.
Therefore, it is crucial that you adhere to the procedure described in ISO/CD 17943 that
will be made available for each participant early in 2013. The draft version will be made
available even earlier on demand by now.
Please find in the following table some further technical information for your kind attention
and consideration when preparing your measurements.
(matrices):
12 th July 2013 (deadline)
Free of charge
Sample 1: Surface water will be taken from an urban and
industrialized area (river Ruhr in Muelheim, Germany).
Sample 2: Municipal wastewater will be taken from a plant effluent
(region of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany).
Large particles will be rejected by filtration using a metal filter.

Item
Principle:
Reference substances
(stock solutions):
Stabilization /
preservation:
Reporting of results:
Information
Analytes to be determined are extracted from the headspace above the
water sample by means of SPME. After the extraction the SPME fibre is
removed from the sample vial (headspace vial) and introduced into the
injector of a gas chromatograph. The analytes are transferred to the
capillary column by thermal desorption. The substances are separated
and detected using GC MS.
Additionally, all laboratories will be provided with multicomponent
stock solutions (substances of table 1) placed in a set of 2 (or 3) vials.
Each mixture contains known amounts of single certified reference
substances dissolved in methanol. These stock solutions are intended
to serve for preparation of the corresponding aqueous multi-component
reference solutions used for calibrating of the total procedure.
Samples will be stabilized using sodium azide (40 mg/l). Any storage of
samples should be carried out by refrigeration after arrival.
An electronic record sheet (EXCEL file) will be sent out by e-mail to all
participants. Data submission will be exclusively done electronically
using partly inaccessible EXCEL data reporting spreadsheets enabling
subsequent automatic data transfer for computerized evaluation.
Finally, participants are requested to give some additional and/or
general Information about the measurements and procedural
details. In some cases a choice between pre-set options will be offered
by tick-boxes.
The file shall be e-mailed to the organizer.
Parameters to be
determined:
Replicates
Concentration range(s):
See attached listing of parameters in Table 1
The measurement of all parameters is recommended but not obligatory
for participation.
Four independent replicate analysis from each of the 2 samples are
required.
Spiking concentrations of all substances will be in the following
concentration range:
Sample 1 (surface water):
Sample 2 (municipal wastewater):
0,02 µg/l to 0,80 µg/l
0,05 µg/l to 3,00 µg/l
Evaluation: According to ISO 5725-2
All analytes will be present (spiked) in quantifiable concentrations.
Report/certificate:
The results of the trial will be reported in detail to all participants in an
anonymous form. The participants included in the evaluation process
according ISO 5725-2 can identify their own data via the laboratory code.
Detailed tables and graphs will be delivered (e-mail with attached pdffiles).
