A LETTER FROM THE INTERIM CEOs
What is United Way Success
When a strong team of volunteers, donors and staff
pull together with a clear vision When we work for
the community and care for one another When what
is achieved is bigger than what any one of us could do
alone That’s the heart of United Way
Highlights of 2012-13 Successes:
• More than 160 volunteers active in Community
Solutions Teams focused on making headway in
United Way’s five goals: Reduce Homelessness, End
Hunger, Increase Financial Stability, Ensure Literacy
and Build Youth Life Skills
• Increased giving and generosity by local donors and
matching funds through local companies
• Cost savings through increased sponsorships and
internal efficiencies
• Thousands of community members active in United
Way efforts: Llama Llama Read-A-Rama; trainings
for parents of young children & child care providers;
Progressive Dinner; Back to the Basic Community
Drive; LIVE UNITED@Work meetings; volunteer
projects; “Homeless is My Address, Not My Name”
display at the Paramount Gallery; the “Readers,
Tutors, Mentors” initiative

A LETTER FROM ED LAUBACH
This past year United Way
of Central Minnesota has
undergone significant
change With the support of
our communities, programs,
agencies, staff and hundreds
of volunteers, we have
developed our new community
impact goals Along with our
goals, we have developed a
Ed Laubach
new, focused fund allocation
'12/'13 Board Chair
process and this spring we
announced our first funding
decisions to address our new goals
This year’s move to a community impact funding
process allows the United Way to focus on root causes
of issues impacting our communities Combine that
focus with the collaborative spirit of Central Minnesota
and we will continue to help create opportunities to
improve people’s lives
The progress made would not have been possible
without the hard work and caring oversight of the
members of the Board of Directors and the staff of
United Way of Central Minnesota The leadership and
dedication of these people has been invaluable in
assisting with a smooth transition to our new strategic
direction
A LETTER FROM ED LAUBACH
This process was not always pretty – there were many,
many long hours spent delving deeply into our new
goals We listened, and then listened some more, to
our communities’ voices I was truly inspired by the
time, energy and commitment of all who participated
It is an honor to serve as the Board Chair of United
Way of Central Minnesota I look forward to continuing
this work in the next year with the leadership and
support of our communities, programs, agencies, staff
and hundreds of volunteers Together we can meet our
Mission -- To improve people’s lives by mobilizing the
caring power of Central Minnesota.

UNITED WAY'S STRATEGIC DIRECTION
All people deserve a roof over their head and food in
their stomach Every child should have an opportunity
to enter school ready to learn More than ever before,
United Way is focused and outcome driven Rather
than spread dollars thinly across a wide range of
programs, the focus has become to make a deeper
impact on five community issues and provide
measureable results
United Way’s five goals within the impact areas
of education and basic needs include: reducing
homelessness, ending hunger, increasing financial
stability, ensuring literacy and building youth life
skills.
United Way of Central Minnesota partners with
organizations who address the five community
goals, achieve measurable results, and are fiscally
accountable
United Way recruits people and organizations from
all across the community who bring the passion,
expertise and resources needed to get things done

ALISHA'S STORY
ALISHA'S STORY

300 children in Central Minnesota
are waiting for an adult mentor . . .
Imagine being stuck in
an abusive relationship,
then losing your support
system and becoming
homeless just five months
before your son was born
What would you do How
would you provide for your
child
Alisha moved to St Cloud at 18 to begin her college
education at St Cloud State University She was doing
well her first semester After getting off to a good start,
she became involved in an abusive relationship and
found out she was pregnant Due to the unplanned
pregnancy, Alisha had to leave school in order to work
When Samuel was born, Alisha was given information
about Imagination Library, so she signed him up for the
program “He was always so excited to get a new book
in the mail,” Alisha remembers
She continued to work until her son began kindergarten
– that’s when she decided to go back to school She
couldn’t afford daycare, so Alisha put Samuel in
KIDSTOP, with the help of a scholarship, so she could
both work and go to school, without having to worry
about Samuel
After a long and difficult journey, Alisha proudly
graduated from St Cloud State University with honors
in May 2013 with a degree in Sociology, Criminal Justice,
and Psychology
Because of the unstable situation, Alisha lost her
apartment at five months pregnant She was homeless
and didn’t know what to do, until someone told her to
call United Way 2-1-1 With nowhere else to turn, Alisha
called the helpline “They were kind and supportive,
and really listened to my situation They advised me to
contact Anna Marie’s ”
Alisha called the shelter, which provided her with a
safe, warm place to live Just two weeks before her
son, Samuel, was born, Alisha moved into her own
apartment
Without 2-1-1, Imagination Library, and all of the
resources that United Way supports, Alisha knows
she would not be where she is today “The community
doesn’t realize the effort and energy of United Way,”
said Alisha “The money helped me finish school and
see a brighter future for myself ”
“Seeing how much United Way helps, I’m glad I utilized
those services and donated that $5 out of every
paycheck I have a grateful heart,” said Alisha “If I
didn’t have that support, I don’t think I would be where I
am today Now I’m the one in a position to give back ”

collected for youth in Central Minnesota who are
experiencing homelessness

You have spent a lifetime giving, why not make it last forever
In 2003 a young man started a position as a Loaned Executive for United Way of Central
Minnesota This was his first foray into what would become a 10 year commitment to this
organization That first year Jason Bernick was baptized by fire into the craziness of what
Annual Campaign means to the people who work as Loaned Executives But Jason’s
passion for service didn’t end that year He was soon involved on a Results Team
as a community volunteer who helped determine funding allocations to partner
programs Jason has also served on the Campaign Cabinet and as a Board
Member during his 10 year tenure He retired from the board after serving
as the Board Chair in 2010 but came back to our aid in 2012 assisting in the
CEO Search Jason has hosted Imagination Library dinners and also assists an
internal team at Bernick’s with their United Way campaign
This year Jason is serving as the de ‘Tocqueville Chair for United Way of Central
Minnesota He’s always willing to share his perspective from a company and as a
business owner His passion for United Way will live on for generations to come with
his commitment to our Granite Society Underneath his typical business attire Jason Bernick really is a
super hero, a doer of good, a force against evil Jason Bernick doesn’t just wear the shirt he LIVES
UNITED! We look forward to the next 10 years of Jason’s passion and commitment to United Way of
Central Minnesota

to helping those in
need “Back in 1982
I started working as
an administrator at
the St Cloud Ear,
Nose & Throat Clinic,
which had a history of
running United Way
David Schlough
campaigns I joined in
and continued to give
to United Way throughout my working career and
beyond because I think it is the right thing to do ”
After retiring from the clinic, David began
volunteering at Tri-CAP, a United Way of Central
Minnesota partner program, counseling people
facing financial difficulties and providing them
with practical help That led to the opportunity to
volunteer at the Free Tax Preparation Service that
Tri-CAP offers in the community “That was in 2007
and I have worked with the program ever since Last
year we prepared and filed over 1,800 tax returns
for low and middle income people ”
Through his volunteer efforts, David has gotten to
know many people who have not been as fortunate
as himself “It is amazing and mind boggling to
see the difficulties that some of our neighbors
face,” David remarked This is where contributions
to United Way of Central Minnesota come in -- by
funding local services, the organization helps
connect those who are struggling to a brighter
future
Learning first-hand about the difficult situations
of some of the people he has helped has inspired
David to continue giving back to his community,
both as a volunteer and as a United Way Loyal
Contributor “For as long as I can remember, I have
held the belief that one of the reasons to support
United Way is that it offers a way for more fortunate
people to help people who need help That is a
great thing ”

Success By 6 (SB6) is a collaboration to build
community support for children during the formative
years that influence their entire lives - from birth to
age six
United Way's Success By 6 believes effective
parenting can be learned and every child has
potential A strong community builds upon the assets,
strengths and capabilities of children and their
families But all of us need to take responsibility
Success By 6 would not be possible without grants,
local corporations and individuals supporting the
program year-round!
IMAGINATION LIBRARY
Imagination Library (IL) is a program of the United
Way of Central Minnesota Success By 6 initiative
and offered in partnership with the Dollywood
Foundation Parents with children, from birth to their
fifth birthday, who live in the UWCM service area,
are eligible to sign up for Imagination Library Each
month children enrolled in the program receive a free,
age appropriate book in the mail The program is
offered to families at no cost
Imagination Library is partially funded locally by
individual donations from parents, community
members, organizations and special grants Last year
11,633 children
received books
through the
