California Lambda
University of the Pacific
The men of Cal Lambda, University
of Pacific, are on the
rise once again! After having
a very productive fall semester,
we had a spring semester
filled with intramural, community
service, scholastics,
and a successful spring rush.
We have successfully won two
indoor soccer championships,
a volleyball championship, a
basketball championship with
the possibility of more basketball
tides pending.
We still are active in the
Adopt-a-Highway program
and are looking into participation
in a carnival with local
organizations.
Even with all these activities
in the house, the brotherhood
has still excelled
scholastically. We ranked in
second place among all fraternities
with our house GPA
this semester. We only
missed the first place spot by
a fraction of a point, which
we hope to made up by next
semester.
With twenty-two Phikeias
we beat the second place
chapter on campus by at least
ten rushees! We are ecstatic
to have acquired such a fine
group of gentlemen that we
will be proud to call Phi Delta
Theta brothers.
We continue to strengthen
our relations with alumni by
corresponding both on-line
and by newsletter. Alumni are
a big part of the chapter and
essential in achieving a strong
brotherhood both on and off
campus. Cal Lambda alumni
may contact Joel Tornatore at
jrt@eng.sun.com to get on the
Cal Lambda e-mail list.
As the semester begins to
wind down we can look back
and be proud of the things we
have accomplished. As a chapter
we have set goals and have
worked as a unit in order to
achieve them. We are excited
for what the future holds and
aspire to be around campus
for many years to come!
Homecoming was the occasion
for celebrating the 40th
reunion for nine brothers and
their wives. The activities included
a banquet, parade,
open house brunch hosted by
the chapter, and a splendid
football game with U.C. Davis.
Missouri Gamma
Washington University
The brothers at Missouri
Gamma chapter at Washington
University have proudly
finished up a great semester.
Most recently, we invited Big
Brother/Big Sister of St. Louis
to campus during which the
kids had a chance to interact
with our Phis on the Washington
University football
team. Everyone had a blast
and we look forward to planning
more events with them
in the future.
This semester has also been
incredibly rewarding. It began
with being named the intramural
athletics champions for
the 96-97 year over all the
other student groups at Washington
University. Also, we
were proud of our alumni
who were recently inducted
into the Washington University
Athletic Hall of Fame:
Bob Hudgens '37 and Mel
Siegel '56 were both outstanding
players on the Washington
University footbaU team. Finally,
the Phi Deks in conjunction
with Kappa Kappa
Gamma won the Homecoming
trophy for our performance
in events such as the
spirit contest and float building
for the homecoming parade.
We look forward to an
equally busy and rewarding
spring semester.
New
Mexico
Alpha
University
of New
Mexico
This academic
year
started with
momentum
from successes during the
spring '97 semester: we were
recognized as the outstanding
chapter in our province, we
won the prestigious Gold Star
Award, and our chapter advisor,
John Jones, won the UNM
Outstanding Greek Alumnus
Award.
Our choice last fall to become
an early alcohol-free
chapter quickly produced
many rewards, such as a grant
of $20,000 from the Education
Foundation and Fraternity.
This grant, alumni
support and our own hard
worked helped restore the
chapter house to its best condition
ever. The most valued
improvements are new furniture,
including chairs for the
chapter room and tables for
study areas, landscape renovations,
and a fire alarm system.
Many finishing touches
also add to the houses appeal,
such as lamps, frames for
photographs of famous Phis,
and new carpet. Our renovated
house quickly became
fully occupied, and even had
a waiting list.
The renovated house, along
with a successful rush effort,
resulted in a large pledge class
and 10 initiates in January,
increasing the chapter size to
39 men. The pledges caught
on quickly to the goal of
scholastic performance, helping
the chapter achieve an
unheard-of GPA of 3.14 for
the fall semester. Not only is
this the best GPA among all
fraternities on campus, but
also among all sororities,
which typically produce the
highest grades on campus.
The spring '98 semester
looks equally promising.
This April our Founders
Day celebration includes the
first annual "alumni vs.
actives" golf tournament, a
Founders Day formal, and an
alumni event in Santa Fe. For
events and the latest chapter
