The book was a result of Willimon's four-month journey on the Duke Campus "meeting hundreds of students, attending parties, [spending] a number of nights wandering about or sleeping in the dorms." Willimon stated that when his report was issued some feculty complained: "Kbu have not been tough enough on firatemities.Fraternities are the source of most of our problems." Dr. Willimon disagreed! He came to the conclusion that loneliness, detachment, and isolation were greater problems. He stresses the need for friendship in education! Perhaps it is here that we look for solutions to our problems. What and who are real friends Again, reflecting back on our signing of the Bond, what kind of commitment was made relative to protecting one another's good name That good name, obviously, has to be rooted in the truth, in honesty, in integrity. My own doctoral research was in the area of modeling behavior. I read great quantities of literature that dealt with an "observer" seeing a model behaving in a particular way. The observer then learned the behavior. Three years after completing the degree, I taught as a visiting professor during a summer session at the University of 57 percent of young people reported they had cheated on an exam in the previous year, though over 85 percent said such cheating was wrong! Do ideals match behavior Are we 'Valking the talk" Illinois. After teaching two classes in the morning, I met Phi Brother Scott Laidlaw in the University's Olympic-sized pool where the good "coach" turned me firom a non-swinuner into a swinamer (at the age of 39!). Scott's success was that he told me to hold my breath and (with my goggles on) watch him do the stroke firomunder the water. It worked like a charm! Now, how about "imitation behavior" when it comes to honesty, integrity or "our word" What should we expect of our chapter officers, our leaders, the brothers who are part of the initiation teams in our chapters "Let your signature to The Bond..." What examples will we be for a world that seems to thrive on the dishonest behaviors of others Does the headline, "Everyone else is lying" mean that I throw integrity to the winds WiU my "word" given to firiendship,sound learning, and moral rectitude be something the world will recognize and know that we are different Perhaps our "Living Bond" program aimounced at last summer's Leadership Conference will challenge us to more than scholarship funds. Those fimds will simply help us prepare Brothers who will let the world know there are people whose word truly is their bond. Make 150 years come alive! FRATERNITY AND FOUNDATION Foundation announces graduate school fellowships HE TRUSTEES OF THE EDUcational Foundation T took a step at their fall meeting that will be cheered by Phi graduate students. They voted to award four $2,500 graduate fellowships for the 1998-1999 academic year. This $10,000 brought the scholarship/fellowship budget for the year to $100,000. Phi Delta Theta began awarding scholarships in 1954. Until now, all of those awards have been to undergraduates. In recent years, many graduate students have contacted the Foundation office asking if they were eligible for any assistance. The trustees' decision was based on this interest and was made possible by the generous financial support of Phi Delta Theta alumni. The grants are for graduate study in any field. An applicant must be a member in good standing of Phi Delta Theta. If he is not already a graduate student, he must complete undergraduate work by June 30, 1998, and begin graduate work by the fall term. Selection will be based on academic excellence, campus and community activities and Phi Deha Theta involvement. The Foundation urges eligible graduate students to call or write for additional information and fellowship applications. New giving levels The Living Bond Campaign is bringing the Phi Delta Theta Educational Foundation fund raising activities into a new realm. We anticipate receiving larger gifts than we have ever before received as a result of the campaign SI and because of the generous support already being indicated by alumni. Thus the Foimdation trustees feel the need to estabUsh new - and higher - levels of recognition. The first six levels listed below are new or changed. The $25,000 cumulative level was previously named the Robert Morrison Association. That level's name is now the Arthur R. Priest Association. Alumni whose life-todate giving totals $100,000 will now be members of Founder Morrison's Association. Benjamin Harrison Association $1 million and above. Oxford Society $500,000 - 999,999. Robert J. Miller Association $250,000 - 499,999. Robert Morrison Association $100,000 - 249,999. Paul C. Beam Association $50,000 - 99,999. Arthur R. Priest Association $25,000 - 49,999. John McMillan Wilson Association $20,000- 24,999. Ardivan Walker Rodgers Association $15,000 - 19,999. Founders Club $10,000 - 14,999. The Trustees are also announcing a new recognition level created specifically for The Living Bond Campaign. This new society is the 1848 Society honoring the year of the founding of Phi Delta Theta. Membership in the society will require a contribution of $1,848 in new dollars during the course of the campaign. Membership is not based on an individual's previous giving or cumulative giving. The Foimdation hopes many alumni will choose to stretch their annual giving during the course of the campaign to include a very special gift of $1,848. New volunteer The General Council has appointed Richard S. Maclnnes to serve as Xi Province President. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1973. He has served as a chapter adviser for Iowa Gamma, and a General Fraternity alumni commissioner. Professionally, Brother Maclnnes is the marketing manager for the Small Business Division of US West Company in Omaha. There are currently 20 chapters in need of a chapter adviser.
