The top scorer for 15-10 Centre<br />
was All-SCAC honorable mention<br />
guard Bryan Bates, who was also 10""<br />
in Division III free throws (89.2 percent,<br />
74 of 83). He scored 373 points<br />
(14.9) and tied for second with 18<br />
steals. Among Bryan's best games<br />
were 29 points against Southwestern<br />
and 26 points versus Washington<br />
University. He ended his career with<br />
1,400 points, eighth-best in school<br />
history.<br />
Duncan<br />
Bates<br />
Centre's number two reboimder was forward Chip<br />
McLain with 144 boards (5.8). He also scored 246 points<br />
(9.8) with a career best 25 point performance<br />
versus University of the<br />
South. Chip also had the team's top<br />
rebounding game with 15 against<br />
Asbury.<br />
Case Western Reserve's top<br />
player was guard Pat Duncan, who<br />
gained All-NCAC honorable mention.<br />
He led in scoring (384 points,<br />
15.4), assists (76), three point goals<br />
(29) and had the top scoring game<br />
(25 versus Carnegie Mellon). Guard<br />
Chris Duncan (Pat's twin) was also a<br />
CWRU starter, scoring 212 points<br />
(8.5 average) while ranking second with 52 assists and 32<br />
steals.<br />
Two <strong>Phi</strong> Delt regulars led Lawrence to a 16-8 season. All-<br />
MWC second team guard Ben Zagorski ranked second with<br />
318 points (13.8). He led in free throw shooting (84.0 percent),<br />
three pointers (48) and high point<br />
game (32). Co-captain/guard Louie<br />
Clark was second in rebounding<br />
(109,4.5) and assists (58) while<br />
ranking third in scoring (266<br />
points, 11.1, high of 28).<br />
Joe Hougland started every<br />
contest at center for the 21-5<br />
Franklin squad. He was the top<br />
rebounder (126, 5.0) and scored<br />
152 points (6.1). His best game<br />
was a 20 point, 12 rebound performance<br />
versus Indiana-Southeast.<br />
Forward Stuart Blackwell of<br />
Franklin contributed off tiie bench and<br />
had a top game of 13 points, 9 rebounds<br />
against Purdue-<strong>No</strong>rth Central.<br />
Despite starting just six games, Puget Sound forward<br />
Mike Miller was the team's second-leading scorer with 310<br />
points (13.5). He led the Loggers witii 63 successful tiiree<br />
pointers and also grabbed 101 rebounds (4.4). Washington<br />
& Lee guard Matt Jackson was a good contributor with 35<br />
assists and <strong>121</strong> points (5.0)<br />
Guard Justin Peery was the second-leading scorer for<br />
Westminster, totaling 287 points (12.0). He led the team<br />
with 103 assists, 33 steals and a high game performance of<br />
27 points versus Principia. Guard Derrick Mueller started 12<br />
contests for Southwestern (KS) and ranked third in scoring<br />
(220 points, 8.8). Also seeing action for the Pirates were forward<br />
Tom Harrelson (107 points, 4.9), and guard Billy Paver.<br />
Successful in the head coaching ranks was Scott Schumacher,<br />
Southwest Texas State '84, who led Kilgore College to a 27-5<br />
record.<br />
The Fraternity's two veteran pro players had good seasons<br />
in the National Basketball Association. Seattie Supersonics<br />
forward Detief Schrempf, Washington '85, was second in rebounds<br />
(7.1) and assists (341) while ranking third with a<br />
15.8 scoring average. Utah Jazz forward Adam Keefe, Stanford<br />
'92, was second with 438 rebounds (5.5) while averaging 7.8<br />
points per game.<br />
Wrestling<br />
Earning All-America honors for<br />
Lawrence was Mike Hoskins, who<br />
placed fifth at 177 lbs. during the<br />
NCAA Division III championships.<br />
He was the Vikings' most valuable<br />
wrestler, won the MWC title and<br />
posted a team best 46-6 record with<br />
10 pins. Mike Damrow, co-captain<br />
elect for next season, was second<br />
with a 24-17 mark at 126 lbs. Third Smiddy<br />
in wins for Lawrence was Ross Hubbard, who was 21-19 at<br />
167 lbs. Kevin Dutton was the Vikings' regular at 150 lbs.<br />
Steve Smiddy of Western Maryland also competed at the<br />
Division III meet and broke the school record for career wins<br />
with 97. A two-time captain, the 134-pounder placed second<br />
at the Centennial Conference meet and NCAA East Regional.<br />
Steve's record for <strong>1998</strong> was 32-14. Teammate Jon Pitonzo,<br />
who wrestied at 126 lbs, posted a 23-19 mark with eight pins.<br />
He placed third at the Centennial meet and<br />
fifth at the East Regional.<br />

cant action for Wabash. Pat<br />
^ jlj^J^l'*^^ McGinley had a 21-15 mark at 150<br />
IV"*'^ lbs. and placed fifth at the NCAA West<br />
Regional meet. Bob Beyer was 13-10 at 167 lbs<br />
while Lee Sutton was 5-4 as a heavyweight. Josh<br />
Gearheardt was the Littie Giants' regular at 142 lbs. John<br />
Grumbine of Washington & Lee had a 7-6 record with nine<br />
takedowns while competing at 150 lbs.<br />
Football<br />
University of Mississippi Chancellor Robert Khayat, Mississippi<br />
'60, was named winner of the Career Achievement<br />
