Winter sports 1998 By Jay Langhammer Basketball A standout for the 22-5 Wabash NCAA Division III playoff squad was forward Chad Tabor, who was on the All-ICAC and NABC/Chevrolet All-Midwest District first teams. He led in blocked shots (28) and steals (34); was second in scoring (476 points, 17.6 average) and assists (58); and ranked third with 130 rebounds (4.8 average). Among Chad's top games were a careerhigh 34 points versus Franklin and 27 points against DePauw. Also a season-long regular for Wabash was co-captain/guard Beau Barrett, the free throw shooting leader (88.2 percent, 30 of 34) and assists leader (59). He also ranked third on the squad with 25 steals. Forward Tim Flint appeared in 13 contests for the Littie Giants. Forward Lindley Thompson was a key player and started 17 contests for the 25-6 Nebraska-Kearney RMAC champs and Division II playoff team. He scored 217 points (7.0), grabbed 135 rebounds (4.4) and had a season high 20 points versus Northwestern State. 22 THE SCROLL SPRING 1998
The top scorer for 15-10 Centre was All-SCAC honorable mention guard Bryan Bates, who was also 10"" in Division III free throws (89.2 percent, 74 of 83). He scored 373 points (14.9) and tied for second with 18 steals. Among Bryan's best games were 29 points against Southwestern and 26 points versus Washington University. He ended his career with 1,400 points, eighth-best in school history. Duncan Bates Centre's number two reboimder was forward Chip McLain with 144 boards (5.8). He also scored 246 points (9.8) with a career best 25 point performance versus University of the South. Chip also had the team's top rebounding game with 15 against Asbury. Case Western Reserve's top player was guard Pat Duncan, who gained All-NCAC honorable mention. He led in scoring (384 points, 15.4), assists (76), three point goals (29) and had the top scoring game (25 versus Carnegie Mellon). Guard Chris Duncan (Pat's twin) was also a CWRU starter, scoring 212 points (8.5 average) while ranking second with 52 assists and 32 steals. Two Phi Delt regulars led Lawrence to a 16-8 season. All- MWC second team guard Ben Zagorski ranked second with 318 points (13.8). He led in free throw shooting (84.0 percent), three pointers (48) and high point game (32). Co-captain/guard Louie Clark was second in rebounding (109,4.5) and assists (58) while ranking third in scoring (266 points, 11.1, high of 28). Joe Hougland started every contest at center for the 21-5 Franklin squad. He was the top rebounder (126, 5.0) and scored 152 points (6.1). His best game was a 20 point, 12 rebound performance versus Indiana-Southeast. Forward Stuart Blackwell of Franklin contributed off tiie bench and had a top game of 13 points, 9 rebounds against Purdue-North Central. Despite starting just six games, Puget Sound forward Mike Miller was the team's second-leading scorer with 310 points (13.5). He led the Loggers witii 63 successful tiiree pointers and also grabbed 101 rebounds (4.4). Washington & Lee guard Matt Jackson was a good contributor with 35 assists and 121 points (5.0) Guard Justin Peery was the second-leading scorer for Westminster, totaling 287 points (12.0). He led the team with 103 assists, 33 steals and a high game performance of 27 points versus Principia. Guard Derrick Mueller started 12 contests for Southwestern (KS) and ranked third in scoring (220 points, 8.8). Also seeing action for the Pirates were forward Tom Harrelson (107 points, 4.9), and guard Billy Paver. Successful in the head coaching ranks was Scott Schumacher, Southwest Texas State '84, who led Kilgore College to a 27-5 record. The Fraternity's two veteran pro players had good seasons in the National Basketball Association. Seattie Supersonics forward Detief Schrempf, Washington '85, was second in rebounds (7.1) and assists (341) while ranking third with a 15.8 scoring average. Utah Jazz forward Adam Keefe, Stanford '92, was second with 438 rebounds (5.5) while averaging 7.8 points per game. Wrestling Earning All-America honors for Lawrence was Mike Hoskins, who placed fifth at 177 lbs. during the NCAA Division III championships. He was the Vikings' most valuable wrestler, won the MWC title and posted a team best 46-6 record with 10 pins. Mike Damrow, co-captain elect for next season, was second with a 24-17 mark at 126 lbs. Third Smiddy in wins for Lawrence was Ross Hubbard, who was 21-19 at 167 lbs. Kevin Dutton was the Vikings' regular at 150 lbs. Steve Smiddy of Western Maryland also competed at the Division III meet and broke the school record for career wins with 97. A two-time captain, the 134-pounder placed second at the Centennial Conference meet and NCAA East Regional. Steve's record for 1998 was 32-14. Teammate Jon Pitonzo, who wrestied at 126 lbs, posted a 23-19 mark with eight pins. He placed third at the Centennial meet and fifth at the East Regional. Bob Beyer was 13-10 at 167 lbs while Lee Sutton was 5-4 as a heavyweight. Josh Gearheardt was the Littie Giants' regular at 142 lbs. John Grumbine of Washington & Lee had a 7-6 record with nine takedowns while competing at 150 lbs.
