LETTERS
From the editor
AFTER THREE YEARS AS THE
25th editor of our Fraternity
magazine, I regrettably report
I am
moving
on with
my career
and leaving
the
post. But
before I
go, I want
to take
this opportunity to thank
some people for helping make
my job easier.
Carmalieta Bellinger
Jenkins takes time away from
her Educational Foundation
duties to painstakingly proof
the magazine. Anyone who
works in this business knows
how easy it is to overlook a
mistake. Carm catches them
all with her red pen.
Jeanette Hacker, and before
her Darlene Maxwell, have
served as the editorial assistant
for the magazine. They
have sorted through chapter
reports, alumni club reports,
chapter grand entries and
made sense of it all so I could
just drop it in the magazine.
I also thank the rest of the
GHQ staff for helping make
this all possible and putting
up with me on deadlines.
Of course, I must thank
Tom and Laura Gavel, Brett
Circe and the rest of the gang
at TKO Media in Florida. The
free covers, web site work and
other assistance has been
invaluable.
Finally, I would like to
thank you, my brothers in
The Bond, for your continued
interest and support of this
publication and this organization.
I believe we are on top
of the Greek world as the new
century approaches.
Lose the ballcaps
I GOT QUITE A SET BACK WHEN
I viewed the picture on page
151 of the winter issue of The
Scroll. I will qualify my comments
by saying that I am
now 76 years old, am not a
prude and have spent many
years in development and
training programs of various
types. The shock was to see
the material you have to work
with. Of the group in the picture
on page 151, 50 percent
of the "undergraduates"
shown did not have the courtesy
to remove their caps
when in an organized
meeting.
Maybe there is a "patch"
they could wear to break the
addiction; or the Foundation
needs some functional rules
to impress the students with
what a Phi Delt man is.
The Cardinal
Principles
PLEASE KNOW HOW MUCH I
appreciated seeing your visage
and reading your short article
on "moral rectitude" in the
business world in the recent
edition of The Scroll. I have
fond memories of the early
1970s during my undergraduate
days at the Illinois Phi
house.
You struck a chord with me
in your review of "moral rectitude"
in business. As does
Mr. Bere of Borg-Warner, I
often practice preventive law
by counseling employees that
if they have a question or
doubt as to their intended
action, that if they would not
say or do the intended action
in front of their mother, then
they should reconsider and
come up with an alternative
strategy.
Thanks
I
AM WRITING THIS LETTER to
give recognition to those
chapters, brothers and individuals
that have donated to
our newly developed fundraiser
for our fraternity
house. I also want to give a
brief overview of what we are
doing now.
The men of Phi Delta
Theta, Missouri Eta, at Missouri
Western State College,
announced the development
of a campaign aimed at building
a fraternity house on
campus. Brother Scott SoUars
will direct the campaign.
At the present time, the fraternity
has to rely on having
their chapter and committee
meetings, study hall and
brotherhood events, at the
school's Student Union. Due
to lack of space and privacy,
this sometimes prevents them
from holding such events. The
brothers feel that they don't
have a place to call home, a
place where they could go
meet or just to hang out. Having
a house will not only
solve all these problems, but it
will also help increase recruitment
and build better
relations on campus.
The chapter has established
a Housing Corporation, but
we are still lacking funds to
get this campaign started. The
chapter is currently selling
bricks, pillars and bedrooms
as fundraisers. Each bedroom
or pillar will have a plaque
with a messaged engraved on
it by the donators. The bedroom
or pillar can be purchased
by a number of people
so the price isn't as much.
Lists of those that already
donated to our Housing
Fundraiser are as follows:
Chapters: Kansas Alpha,
Indiana Zeta, Tennessee Deha,
Oklahoma Beta, North Dakota
Alpha, and Georgia Alpha.
Individuals, Pete Khalil, Andy
J. Studer, Eric G. Sollars, Scott
R Sollars, Thomas R. Hayward,
Chaney A. Cathcart,
John S. Roundy, Jeff
Bonebrake, Chris S. Miljavic,
Ryan Cordry, Ryan Schueth,
Matt Baird, Brett A. Yantis,
