Volleyball player is top <strong>Phi</strong> athlete<br />

OR THE FIRST TIME IN THE<br />

F award's history, a volleyball<br />

player has won the<br />

Harmon-Rice-Davis award<br />

for the top <strong>Phi</strong> <strong>Delta</strong> <strong>Theta</strong><br />

athlete.<br />

Chad Strickland, a member<br />

of the California Zeta chapter<br />

at Cal State <strong>No</strong>rthridge, had<br />

an outstanding 1996 season<br />

and was honored by the<br />

Harmon-Rice-Davis committee<br />

for his efforts. During<br />

1996, he logged 522 kills,<br />

more than 200 digs, one<br />

triple-double (double-digit<br />

kills, blocks and digs in one<br />

game match) and had a career<br />

high 35 kills in one match.<br />

Last season, Chad was a<br />

standout for the <strong>No</strong>rthridge<br />

Volleyball team, and was selected<br />

a first team All-American.<br />

In the classroom, Chad<br />

obtained a 3.1 grade point<br />

average.<br />

Chad is a resident of<br />

<strong>No</strong>rthridge, California. He<br />

was raised in Valencia, California<br />

and is the son of Mary<br />

Strickland Burr.<br />

Brother Strickland was<br />

honred with the the Harmon-<br />

Rice-Davis award during halftime<br />

ceremonies of a<br />

<strong>No</strong>rthridge game. The award<br />

was presented by past General<br />

Council member Stan Gilson,<br />

and members of the California<br />

Zeta chapter were on the<br />

field when he received the<br />

award.<br />

Olympic swimming gold<br />

medalist Bill Mulliken, Miami<br />

'61 is among the previous<br />

winners of the Harmon-Rice-<br />

Davis award.<br />

The Harmon-Rice Davis<br />

award was originally offered<br />

to honor Tom Harmon,<br />

Michigan '41, who was a professional<br />

football player. The<br />

award is to honor the athlete<br />

who excelled in athletics and<br />

in the classroom.<br />

The award is also named<br />

after Grantland Rice, who was<br />

a famous <strong>Phi</strong> sports writer,<br />

and Dr. John Davis, Washburn<br />

'38, who was The <strong>Scroll</strong> sports<br />

editor for more than 50 years,<br />

and has endowed the award.<br />
