WR Jeff Halstead (26 catches for 286<br />

yards) gained All-NCIC honorable<br />

mention and RB Jeff Heier ran for 214<br />

yards. Splitting TE duties were Joe<br />

Crum and Si France. Line starters were<br />

center Kirk Freeman, OG Shaun<br />

Whitcomb and OG Sam Colson.<br />

Defensive back Robert Cleland was<br />

a Puget Sound standout on defense (34<br />

tackles) and gained All-NCIC second<br />

team honors. DB Kurt Jensen (69 stops)<br />

received All-NCIC<br />

honorable mention<br />

as did NG Nick<br />

Mullen. Other good<br />

defenders at Puget<br />

Sound included DE<br />

Matthew Logue and<br />

Several <strong>Phi</strong> Delt<br />

coaches had successful<br />

seasons. In his fourth season at<br />

Missouri, Larry Smith, Bowling Green<br />

State '62, took his Tigers to a 7-4 record<br />

and Holiday Bowl berth. Harold<br />

"Tubby" Raymond, Michigan '50, led<br />

his Delaware team to a 12-2 record and<br />

the Division I-A semifinals. Mick<br />

Dennehy, Montana '73, led Montana to<br />

a 8-4 mark and Division I-AA playoff<br />

berth. He took the team to a 14-1<br />

record in 199, his first year as head<br />

coach. Jack Harbaugh, Bowling Green<br />

State '61, led 9-2 Western Kentucky to<br />

the Division I-A playoffs. In his 29'''<br />

season, Ron Harms, Valparaiso '58, won<br />

his 200* game, leading 9-2 Texas A&M-<br />

Kingsville into the Division II playoffs.<br />

For the first time in 37 seasons, Jim<br />

Wacker, Valparaiso '59, was not on the<br />

sidelines during a football game. After<br />

stepping down as Minnesota head<br />

coach, he chose to become a color ana-<br />

lyst for CBS radio. Jim's first game was<br />

the Pigskin Classic in late August and<br />

he concluded an eventful season with<br />

the CBS Orange Bowl broadcast on<br />

January 2.<br />

Inducted into the College Football<br />

Foundation Hall of Fame last December<br />

were guard Ray Beck, Georgia<br />

Tech '52, and quarterback Randy<br />

Duncan, Iowa '58. They became the<br />

36* and 37* <strong>Phi</strong>s to be inducted for<br />

playing or coaching exploits.<br />

Pro football<br />

Buffalo Bills star Steve Tasker,<br />

<strong>No</strong>rthwestern '85, announced his retirement<br />

on December 13*. Perhaps the<br />

best special teams performer in NFL<br />

history, he joined the Bills in 1986, following<br />

a rookie year with Houston, and<br />

played in four Super Bowls and six Pro<br />

Bowls. During 1997, he had 12 punt<br />

returns for a 9.4 average.<br />

The "dean" of current <strong>Phi</strong> Delt pros,<br />

punter John Kidd, <strong>No</strong>rthwestern '84,<br />

completed his 14* season with a 43.2<br />

average on 52 punts for the Miami<br />

Dolphins. Another Dolphins standout<br />

was defensive end Trace Armstrong,<br />

Florida '89, who led with 5.5 sacks<br />

and 3 fumble recoveries.<br />

Handling the punting and kickoff<br />

duties again for the San Francisco 49ers<br />

was Tommy Thompson, Oregon '94,<br />

who averaged 40.8 for 78 punts. Also<br />

active during the season were Bills tight<br />

end Tony Cline, Stanford '95; 49ers defensive<br />

back Mike Sahnon, Southern<br />

California '94; and Cincinnati linebacker<br />

Ed Sutter, <strong>No</strong>rthwestern '92. Offensive<br />

guard Val St. Germain, McGill<br />

'94, played his fourth season with the<br />

Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian<br />

Football League.<br />

Soccer<br />

Goalie Andrew Barton played well<br />

for the 8-6-3 Cornell squad, posting<br />

four shutouts, 84 saves and a 1.06 goals<br />

against average. Midfielders Marco<br />

Materazzi and Josh Pincus also saw<br />

action for the Big Red. Playing for the<br />

12-10-1 Butler NCAA tournament<br />

team were goalie Ben Anderson, Ryan<br />

Steve Tasker<br />

Foxworthy and Bryan Foxworthy.<br />

DePauw forward Greg Hewitt was<br />

Most Valuable Player of the Indiana<br />

Collegiate Athletic Conference. He led<br />

the 15-3 ICAC champions in scoring<br />

with 31 points (13 goals, 5 assists).<br />

Water polo<br />

Two <strong>Phi</strong>s earned All-American selection<br />

for the 19-7 Stanford squad,<br />

which played in the finals of the<br />

MPSF championships. Field player<br />

Brian Heifferon was to the Ail-American<br />

first team while goalie Chris<br />

Aguilera was on the A-A second team.<br />

Also playing well for the Cardinal was<br />

Crosby Grant.<br />

Golf<br />

Several <strong>Phi</strong> Delts continued competing<br />

on the pro links during 1997.<br />

Dan Forsman, Arizona State '81, had<br />

his best year on the PGA Tour since<br />

1992, placing 56* on the money leaders<br />

list with $443,034 won at 27<br />

events. Brian Claar, Tampa '81, placed<br />

150* with $<strong>121</strong>,273 won at 18 events.<br />

He picked up an additional $8,184 at<br />

four Nike Tour events.<br />

Competing on the Senior PGA<br />

Tour again was Charles Goody, TCU<br />

'60, who ranked 6P' on the earnings<br />

list with $218,564 won during 30<br />

events. Doing well on the Nike Tour<br />

during 1997 was Matt Gogel, Kansas<br />

'95, who ranked 19* with $91,429 at<br />

24 events.<br />
