Brett Butler receives the Lou Gehrig Award<br />
Last spring. Dodgers slugger Brett Butler receieved the Lou Gehrig Award.<br />

Co-captain/OT Burt Hamburg was<br />
named to the NAIA All-American first<br />
team and All-KCAC first team after<br />
leading 8-3 Southwestern (KS) to the<br />
NAIA playoffs. Also seeing action were<br />
teammates kicker Jason Pond, OG<br />
Chris Asmussen and WR John Nelson.<br />
The 6-4 Washington Univeristy<br />
team had several All-University Athletic<br />
Assn. <strong>Phi</strong> Delt stars. OG Owen<br />
Griffin earned All-UAA first team honors<br />
for the third time while OT John<br />
Molnar gained his first All-UAA selection.<br />
OG Mike Gaf&iey and OT Kit<br />
Eifert were also starters, as was RB<br />
Mike Gallo (178 rushing yards, 54<br />
points).<br />
Pacing the Washington University<br />
defense was All-UAA first team DE Tim<br />
Runnals, the Division III National Defensive<br />
Player of the Week against<br />
Rhodes. He made 50 stops, caused 3<br />
fumbles, deflected 8 passes and had 8<br />
sacks. Other good defenders were DB<br />
Scott Schwartz (44 stops) and DT Tim<br />
Stoll (37 tackles). Bill Johnson gained<br />
All-UAA honorable mention with 34<br />
punts for a 34.6 average.<br />
Sixteen <strong>Phi</strong>s were squad members at<br />
Washington & Lee. Second with 61<br />
stops was All-ODAC second team LB<br />
Matt Luka twice named ODAC Defensive<br />
Player of the Week. Also on the All-<br />
ODAC second team was DB Ryan<br />
Fletemeyer '98 (50 tackles, 3 interceptions).<br />
Also contributing were DE Scott<br />
King '00 (48 tackles, 5 sacks), DB Trey<br />
Carr (47 tackles) and DB John Benazzi<br />
(44 tackles, 3 interceptions, 22 kickoff<br />
returns for a 19.3 average).<br />
A key performer on offense for W8cL<br />
was All-ODAC second team TE David<br />
Ritchie second with 21 catches for 373<br />
yards and co-captain elect. Chas<br />
Chastain,'99, caught 13 passes for 158<br />
yards in the second game but went out<br />
with an injury, as did tri-captain/WR<br />
Nick Hodges '98. Starting at center for<br />
W&L was Stefan Neumeister,.<br />
Co-captain Todd Carter of 8-2<br />
DePauw started at OT and center on<br />
the way to All-ICAC first team honors.<br />
DE Kevin Condict ,'98, who had 5.5<br />
sacks, gained All-ICAC honorable mention<br />
and Omar Minshawi started at<br />
OG for the Tigers.<br />
WR Seth Hyman of Denison caught<br />
21 passes for 148 yards and returned 16<br />
kickoffs for a 16.7 average. Defensive<br />
back Jon O'Neil '99 played well for 5-4<br />
Knox, making 34 stops, picking off two<br />
passes and batting down five.<br />
Six <strong>Phi</strong>s started for Case Western<br />
Reserve. Defensive back Mike Minette,<br />
'98, was second witii 122 tackles, broke<br />
up 8 passes and was on the All-NCAC<br />
second team. DE Kevin Henning<br />
posted 59 tackles and 6.5 sacks to win<br />
All-NCAC and All-UAA honorable<br />
mention. Making 37 stops was DE Jason<br />
Rohrbaugh. Offensive starters were<br />
All-NCAC second team OT Keith<br />
Daugherty OT Eric Conduzio and TE<br />
Matt Schindler.<br />
The Franklin squad was led by 17<br />
<strong>Phi</strong>s. Named Most Valuable Offensive<br />
Back was Dustin Peddycord (team high<br />
30 catches for 482 yards, All-ICAC honorable<br />
mention). OT Chad Bimtin, an<br />
All-ICAC honorable mention pick, was<br />
Most Valuable Offensive Player. QB<br />
Mark Glassmeyer hit 77 of 191 for 968<br />
yards and was backed up by Travis<br />
McMahen (34 of 77 for 262 yards).<br />
Also starting were center Tim Fisher<br />
andOGJ.TVolz.<br />
Key Franklin defenders were DB<br />
Ryan Hendrickson (60 stops); AU-ICAC<br />
honorable mention LB Ryan Krekeler<br />
(42 tackles); DT Joe Janes (37 stops);<br />
LB Jason Reynolds (37 tackles); LB<br />
Chad Wolfe (28 tackles); Co-Most Valuable<br />
Defensive Lineman Steve Nichols<br />
(27 tackles, including 11 for losses); DB<br />
Jason Pugh (23 tackles, 6 deflections);<br />
and DB Benji Betts (19 tackles, 2 interceptions).<br />
Nearly 30 <strong>Phi</strong>s played for Ripon in<br />
1997. On the All-MWC first team were<br />
WR Joe Rettler (64 receptions for 778<br />
yards, 7 TDs), TE Jason Verboncouer<br />
(37 catches for 444 yards), kicker Mike<br />
Grant (8 FGs, 16 extra points, 48 punts<br />
for a 32.0 average) and OT Matt<br />
Strelow. Also starting were WR Josh<br />
Satzer (42 catches for 521 yards) and<br />
OT Chad Wangeline.<br />
