Brothers from Ohio lota at
Denison University with
members of the Newark Lions
Club. The chapter helped the
Lions serve food and raise
funds at Newark's annual
Auto Festival.
Gamma. On April 18, the
university's new baseball stadium
was dedicated in honor
of former coach and alumnus
Bob Wren, '43.
On May 9, the chapter celebrated
Founders Day. However,
this was no ordinary
celebration. Brothers and
alumni gathered to mark Phi
Delta Theta's 130th year at
Ohio University. The founding
was also commemorated
as an American flag was
flown over the U.S. Capitol on
March 28, the armiversary of
the chapter's establishment.
The chapter was also fortunate
to add alumni John
Evans and Joe Luca to the
Chapter Advisory Board.
Their knowledge and expertise
wUl prove to be invaluable.
Ohio Gamma inched closer
to the chapter goal of securing
a lodge to hold chapter
meetings, rush events, and
brotherhood activities
through increased alumni
support. And thanks to the
timely donation from Brother
Collier Zeigler, the chapter
was able to purchase new
ritual equipment.
Ohio Gamma also bid farewell
and best wishes to its
three graduating seniors.
Brothers Doug McCrae, Grant
Swemba and Matt Perrault, at
the annual Senior Send Off
celebration. Their solid contributions
to Phi Deha Theta
and Ohio Gamma will never
be forgotten. Their presence
will be missed for they exemplify
what it means to live life
as a Phi.
Lastiy, under the direction
of president Richard Kuhn
and vice president Michael
Willits, Ohio Gamma conducted
a revision of its chapter
by-laws, which had not
been revised since 1990. From
all this activity, it should be
evident that Ohio Gamma is,
indeed, on the threshold of a
prosperous and exciting future.
Ohio lota
Denison University
The last weekend of September
the brothers of Phi Delta
Theta Fraternity partook in a
fund-raiser at the annual
Auto Festival in Newark,
Ohio—one of several community
endeavors by Phi
Delts this semester. The effort
was not only successfiil but it
was culturally enlightening as
well.
The participants said the
time was well spent on guaranteeing
that food and beverages
were served up right. The
Food Booth was run in three
shifts, each including a different
crew of Phi Delt brothers.
They served everything from
greasy double cheeseburgers
to double-fried pork tenderloins
and hot pretzels.
Proceeds from the effort
went to a Lions Club fund
designed for aid and educational
support for the Foundation
for the Blind and
Physically Handicapped. The
Lions Club of Newark was
delighted with the results and
with the effort shown by Phi
Delts during the fund-raiser.
Frank Smith, chairman of the
Newark Lions Club, said it
helped change his perception
of the Greek system and the
Denison student body as a
whole.
Phi Delta Theta would like
to thank their adviser. Dr.
Kevin Brown, for his continued
support.
Ontario Beta
Western Ontario
Compelling challenges have
confronted Ontario Beta since
the end of last year. We have
tackled them aggressively, and
our task has not been easy or
self-evident. Financially, we
have cleared our outstanding
debt with GHQ—making the
initiation of 37 Brothers into
The Bond (some of which
have been waiting since the
fall of 1997) offidal. We have
also retained the services of a
collection agency and paid
our insurance bill and first
payment of our building and
sinking fund with Housing
Corp. With our fund-raising
events at local clubs and tight
financial control by our Treasurer
Korry Frew, Ontario
Beta will finally be financially
sound and expected to finish
this year with a surplus.
Chapter improvements have
also been made to our washrooms,
bedrooms, and yard.
Special thanks to our House
Manager Al Savage for interviewing
contractors for the
best service and price and
preparing the necessary work
papers for our grant. All this
prepared us for an intensive
recruitment campaign spearheaded
by our Rush Chairmen
Devin Hutchision and
Gustavo DeCamargo. Ontario
Beta finished with eleven new
Phikeias—seven more than
last fall—which placed us
with the fifth biggest pledge
class out of twenty fraternities
on campus. With the Spring
Rush still left to go Ontario
Beta is looking strong in
achieving the Founders Challenge.
The brothers were also active
in community service.
Philanthropic Chairman Peter
Reid has organized our second
annual Thanksgiving
Dinner for the Needy, and we
served over 125 free meals for
the less fortunate in London.
After the dinner, the VP of
Student Affairs for Western
came to discuss the importance
of philanthropic events
and how we can become more
involved with the university.
We were determined to give
something back to the community
to show everyone
