Our chapter is pleased to announce<br />

that we achieved the<br />

highest grade point average<br />

among all chapters at UNM<br />

for the fall semester of 1997.<br />

The spring of <strong>1998</strong> was<br />

equally as promising.<br />

We are also increasing our<br />

community service activities.<br />

Some of our major activities<br />

include a bowl-a-thon benefiting<br />

Big Brothers and Big<br />

Sisters, a blood drive benefiting<br />

United Blood Services,<br />

and a tractor pull benefiting<br />

the Spedal Olympics in which<br />

20 members will pull a<br />

100,000 lb. tractor.<br />

The active chapter would<br />

like to thank Brother Tucker<br />

Coughlen for his efforts in<br />

organizing Lobo <strong>Phi</strong>fest, and<br />

our president. Max Kagan,<br />

whose continual contributions<br />

to the chapter and the<br />

Greek community have led<br />

him to be recognized as the<br />

1997 Greek Man of the Year.<br />

Re-foimding fathers Joe<br />

Edward and Mike Woolsey<br />

are planning a celebration for<br />

the Spring of 1999 to commemorate<br />

the ten-year anni-<br />

versary of the re-founding of<br />

New Mexico Alpha.<br />

From October 9-11 Ohio Alpha<br />

enjoyed reuniting with<br />

graduated <strong>Phi</strong>s at our aimual<br />

Homecoming Weekend. Dan<br />

Mazur, Almnni Relations<br />

Chair, coordinated this unforgettable<br />

weekend. We encourage<br />

all <strong>Phi</strong>s to join us next<br />

year. Earlier this fall, our<br />

chapter finished first in the<br />

competitive Greek Week.<br />

Brothers Ryan Boyle, Manuel<br />

Chavez, Craig Cassell and Jeff<br />

Osher were the Greek Week<br />

chairs. The tireless effort displayed<br />

by these gentiemen<br />

throughout the week propelled<br />

our chapter to victory.<br />

We are proud to announce<br />

that our chapter received the<br />

Gold Star Award for chapter<br />

excellence and a Community<br />

Service Citation by Miami<br />

University. Ohio Alpha would<br />

like to thank brother David<br />

James Effler, Awards Chair, for<br />

showing much effort during<br />

the awards process. Om community<br />

service chairs, John<br />

Farrell and Kevin Murphy,<br />

plaimed numerous activities<br />

to get the chapter involved in<br />

the Oxford conununity.<br />

We are excited to start the<br />

ground-breaking for our new<br />

addition. Construction begins<br />

this spring, and by the<br />

start of the next academic<br />

year it should be complete.<br />

Ohio Eta<br />

Case Western Reserve<br />

After a summer of aimual<br />

activities including the<br />

Alumni/Active Golf Outing<br />

and white-water rafting trip,<br />

the brothers of Ohio Eta entered<br />

the fall semester needing<br />

to replenish numbers after<br />

a large and highly successfiil<br />

graduating class. This goal<br />

was met with the introduction<br />

of a class of 12 <strong>Phi</strong>keias to<br />

our chapter. These scholars,<br />

athletes and gentlemen will<br />

have the honor of leading this<br />

chapter into the 21st century.<br />

With their help we enter a<br />

busy semester of scholastics,<br />

community service and athletics.<br />

The brothers seek to<br />

continue the to raise chapter<br />

GPA. It has been on the rise<br />

for three semesters now. Once<br />

again, we are actively involved<br />

in service activities, planning<br />

to fiilfiHour portion of Greek<br />

Life—365 days of service. We<br />

will be continuing our relationships<br />

with the Cleveland<br />

Food Bank and Greater Cleveland<br />

MADD. And finally,we<br />

begin the first season of<br />

intramurals in pursuit of our<br />

fifth straight championship.<br />

FaU varsity athletics include<br />

three <strong>Phi</strong>s and three <strong>Phi</strong>keias<br />

on the football team.<br />
