Chapter
Reports
Alabama Alpha
University of Alabama
Alabama Alpha has been back
in the fold for well over a year
and a half now, and everything
is headed in the right
direction. The chapter finished
up the 1997-98 school
year with a high ranked active
GPA as well as being nominated
by the General Headquarters
for an Improved
Citation. The chapter participated
in the Habitat for Humanity
program and had two
members inducted into
Jasons. Jasons is the oldest
honor society at University of
Alabama, and only 35 people
are selected to join each year.
Brother David Walton, who
previously served as secretary
of the SGA Senate, is now
serving as vice president of
the IFC. Alabama Alpha is
ejecting nothing but continued
improvement for the
1998-99 school year as we
strive to increase oiu: membership,
excel further in academics
and continue to
improve the appearance of the
chapter house. We hope to
have continued support from
all the Alabama Alpha alumni.
Any alumni interested in assisting
the chapter should
contact Chapter Adviser and
House Corporation President
Frank Morris at 1311 Shady
Lane, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401,
Alberta Alpha
University of Alberta
In a style unique to Alberta
Alpha, the fraternity's northern
most chapter concluded
the 1997-1998 academic year
with a social retreat that allowed
the brothers to forget
the year's exam period and
ease into sunmier. Like past
sununers, the brothers weren't
idle. For the first time in
many years the chapter is going
to begin the process of
renovating its house. This has
been made possible by the
continued dedication and
generosity of our alumni and
the commitment of the membership
to alcohol-free housing.
Anyone wishing to
contribute to this campaign
should contact oiu" president.
Jay Herrick, at the house
(403) 433-2838.
We had a number of
projects which helped us use
our leading role in the movement
toward dry housing as a
rush asset. The largest project
in this effort was our estab-
Ushment of a major campus
concert during the first week
of school. Another event to
which many of the brothers
looked forward (mainly because
they were able to participate)
was our inclusion in
the Orientation activities that
are rim by the Student Union
to introduce new students to
life at the U of A. In conjimction
with our traditional
events, such as the
paintballing, the Aliunni
Smoker, and Formal Bid Stag,
we had very successful rush
and start to the year.
The rush schedule plaimed
by Brother Scott AinsUe made
Phi Delta Theta one of the
most visible fi-atemitieson
campus. This produced a
strong and conmiitted group
of Phikeias that will make a
great addition to the chapter.
Once again the Formal Bidding
Stag was held at the Faculty
Club on campus and
attended by our Province
President. Conclusively, one of
the best events in September
was the Blue Room at the
Campus Cove arcade and pool
hall. A dose second was the
annual Gainford
Exchange.
To keep the brothers up-todate
and informed, the chapter
has started a Ustserv for
those with connections to the
internet and e-mail addresses.
Currentiy we have set up one
for conununications between
members of our Phikeia
classes, and one for the dissemination
of general chapter
information. If you would like
to get coimected to this service,
send e-mail to phidelt@
majordomo. srv.ualberta.ca.
In the subject and body of the
message put only "subscribe."
If you have any difiSculty with
this process, leave a message
on the Alberta Alpha message
board which can be accessed
through the GHQ webpage.
We hope to soon have another
hstserv specifically set up for
our alunmi.
On other notes, there has
been an active movement towards
increased alunmi involvement,
most notably in
the formation of a Chapter
Advisory Board and an officer
mentoring program. With
this type of a start to the
school year, 1998-99 should
be a very successful one.
Finally, this term has witnessed
the start of substantial
renovations to the chapter
house. Most notable is the
new roof at the expense of the
balcony—an Alberta Alpha
tradition for over 25 years.
