V l> 'J More than leaders Undergraduates improving their chapters and their communities by Nathan Thomas, director of chapter services Iune 25-29 marked another annual Phi Delta Theta Leadership College in Oxford, Ohio. Over 500 Phis from 3ss the United States and Canada gathered at Miami University for Phi Delta Theta's flagship educational program. In his last year as "Dean of the Leadership CoUege," Jim Hoppe, McMaster '87, lead a strong curriculum. Brother Hoppe has been the dean for four years. The College opened with a sesquicentennial celebration as brothers followed a candle-lit pathway to the base of Elliott Hall. While the night wasn't as brisk as it was that night of December 26, 1848, the spirit of that night could still be felt. Brothers rededicated themselves to the commitments of The Bond and charged themselves with the ideals of the founders. "I am Robert Morrison and to you I pass Leadership College July 25-29,1998 Miami Unlversityj Oxford, Ohio this torch, be it yours to hold it high," was the charge led forth firom the base of the founding of Phi Delta Theta as portraits of the founders glowed down on the participants. Professional speakers Patti Holmes (on motivation. The Spirit of Leadership), Mike Green (on alcohol and substance abuse, Greeny's Alcohol Assessment), Sparky Reardon, Mississippi '72 (on Phikeia education. Whip Me, Beat Me, I'm a Pledge), Kathy Hiunphrey (on diversity. Self Formation), and Maureen Syring (on motivation. The Time Is Now) lead the general sessions. The 18 hour days also included Leadership College chapter meetings, educational sessions. KO '•^^ê '• ritual reviews, and community service throughout the greater Oxford area. Participants were divided into Leadership College "chapters" which consist of about 25 phis from different chapters throughout the realm of Phi Delt. The College also included chapter advisory board training for alumni and the ambassador program. Ambassadors are veteran Leadership College participants selected to return to the College for advanced training and development. While all work and no play makes for a dull Leadership College, participants were up until the wee hours of every morning sharing Fraternity experiences, enjoying tropical trips (thanks to hypnotist and entertainer Mark Pittman), gambling their Phi bucks, playing PhiSports, and being guests of the Cincinnati Reds as they took on the Atianta Braves. The upset of the College had to be the "Phikeia Chapter" taking first place in the intertube water polo tournament. From the wmning team, three had been initiated into the Fraternity only a few hours earlier in the day. The City of Oxford proclaimed the event Phi Delta Theta Week in Oxford. "...To promote the ideas of scholarship, service to others, leadership, personal development, and fraternal values and ethics to its diverse membership," as the proclamation read. The program was sponsored in part by generous donations from the Phi Delta Theta Educational Foundation.
