Jeff Rice, <strong>No</strong>rthwestern '72 Umpire, 4* year<br />

Mark Steinkerchner, Akron '84 Line judge, 5* year<br />

goals, 28 assists), added five goals and six<br />

assists in two playoff games and has been<br />

a first team All-Star in each of his eight<br />

pro seasons. Paul, who plays for the Syracuse<br />

Smash, was named to the All-NLL<br />

second team after having been a first<br />

team selection his seven previous pro<br />

years. He ranked 10* in NLL scoring<br />

with 51 points (29 goals, 22 assists) during<br />

the <strong>1998</strong> season.<br />

GOLF<br />

Matt Gogel, Kansas '93, was one of the<br />

Nike Tour's top-ranked players during<br />

<strong>1998</strong>. He won the Nike Omaha Classic in<br />

August (13 under par 271) then won the<br />

Tri-Cities Open (12 under 276) in mid-<br />

September. Matt was ranked 16* in <strong>1998</strong><br />

Nike earnings with $119,899.<br />

ADMINISTRATORS<br />

Jim Wacker, Hanover '59, decided to<br />

return to college athletics as athletic director<br />

at Southwest Texas State University<br />

in late August. He had coached the<br />

school to NCAA Division II national<br />

championships in 1981-82 before stints<br />

as head coach at TCU and Minnesota.<br />

Jim worked for CBS radio as a color commentator<br />

in 1997 and continued doing<br />

some broadcast work for the network<br />

this fall. The SWTS Bobcats now compete<br />

in NCAA Division I in every sport except<br />

football (which is in Division I-AA).<br />

Pat Aikman, DePauw '57, was inducted<br />

into the DePauw Athletic Hall of<br />

Fame on September 19*. He served the<br />

school as sports information director<br />

and spent 16 years as director of the Indiana<br />

Collegiate Conference Sports<br />

Bureau. Since 1988, Pat has been community<br />

services and promotion manager<br />

of The Indianapolis Star and Indianapolis<br />

News. One of his key responsibilities is<br />

the management and presentation of the<br />

paper's major philanthropic event—the<br />

annual Indiana-Kentucky High School<br />

AU-Star series, the oldest basketball series<br />

in the nation.<br />
