FOOTBALL<br />

On NFL active rosters as of mid-<strong>No</strong>vember<br />

were two longtime <strong>Phi</strong> Delt veterans.<br />

Sixteen-year punter John Kidd, <strong>No</strong>rthwestern<br />

'84, has been with the Detroit<br />

Lions and New York Jets<br />

while defensive end<br />

Trace Armstrong, Arizona<br />

State-Florida '89,<br />

was back with the Miami<br />

Dolphins for his 10* pro<br />

year. Retired Buffalo<br />

Bills standout Steve<br />

Tasker, <strong>No</strong>rthwestern<br />

'84, made his debut as an NFL color analyst<br />

for CBS-TV.<br />

On collegiate gridirons, there were a<br />

number of <strong>Phi</strong> Delt standouts back from<br />

last year. Wide receiver Corey Peterson,<br />

'00, of Mississippi had 9 receptions for<br />

164 yards, 2 TDs versus Memphis and a<br />

92 yard TD punt return against SMU.<br />

Todd Johnson, '98, was Washington's top<br />

tackier with 56 after the first nine games<br />

and Jeff Pennington, '00, was back at<br />

fullback for SMU. Adam Abrams, '98,<br />

was Southern California's kicker for the<br />

third year, booting a 49 yard field goal<br />

against Florida State and 4 field goals in<br />

the Oregon State game. Kansas offensive<br />

guard Justin Glasgow, '00 is after All-Big<br />

12 honors again.Watch for a complete<br />

Former NFL player and broadcaster<br />

Mike Adamle, <strong>No</strong>rthwestern '71, competed<br />

in the Ironman Triathlon at Kona,<br />

Hawaii on October 3"*, the day before he<br />

turned 49. The events consisted of a 2.4<br />

mile ocean swim, 112 mile bike ride and<br />

26.2 mile run. Mike saw the Ironman<br />

competition first hand as a commentator<br />

for ABC's Wide World of Sports in 1989.<br />

BASEBALL<br />

Pitcher Dave Burba, Ohio State '88, had<br />

a fine year, leading the Cleveland Indians<br />

into the American League playoffs. During<br />

the regular season, he posted a 15-10<br />

record, 4.11 earned run average<br />

and 130 strikeouts in 203.2<br />

innings. In the playoffs, he won<br />

two games with solid relief<br />

stints. Reliever Mike Timlin,<br />

Southwestern '88, led the Seattie<br />

Mariners with 19 saves<br />

and 70 appearances. He had a<br />

2.95 ERA and 60 strikeouts in<br />

79.1 innings. In mid-<strong>No</strong>vember,<br />

he signed a four year, $16<br />

million contract with the Baltimore<br />

Orioles. Mark<br />

Brandenburg, Texas Tech '92,<br />

spent the entire season on the<br />

Texas Rangers' disabled list.<br />

After being approached by<br />

both the Los Angeles Dodgers<br />

and Baltimore Orioles, Cincinnati<br />

general manager Jim<br />

Bowden, Rollins '83, decided<br />

to stay with the Reds and<br />

signed a four year contract<br />

Among the Fraternity's minor<br />

league players, pitcher Dan<br />

Hubbs, Southern California<br />

'93, had injury problems and<br />

pitched in just 13 contests for<br />

Albuquerque of the Pacific<br />

Coast League. Lefty Matt ' ' '<br />

Miller, Texas Tech '96, finished<br />

the <strong>1998</strong> season with<br />

Jacksonville of the Southern League after<br />

starting with West Michigan of the Midwest<br />

League. Between the two teams, he<br />

had a combined 10-11 record with 151<br />

strikeouts in 156 innings.<br />

Other minor leaguers included third<br />

baseman Clint Bryant, Texas Tech '96<br />

(.241 average with 8 homers, 31 RBI for<br />

Salem); pitcher Jeff Andrews, Davidson<br />

'96, who finished the year with High<br />

Desert of the California League; third<br />

baseman Morgan Ensberg, Southern<br />

California '98 (.230 average with 5 homers,<br />

31 RBI for Auburn); and outfielder<br />

"Chip" Denure, Ripon '98 (.242 average<br />

with 3 homers, 22 RBI for Batavia).<br />

LACROSSE<br />

Two of the top players in professional<br />

lacrosse are former All-American<br />

standouts Gary Gait, Syracuse '90, and<br />

Paul Gait, Syracuse '90. Gary was<br />

named <strong>1998</strong> Most Valuable Player of the<br />

National Lacrosse League after recording<br />

the first 50 goal season in 12 years of pro<br />

lacrosse. The Baltimore Thunders star led<br />

the NLL in scoring with 85 points (57<br />
