evening, a golf tournament on Saturday
followed by an awards banquet that
night, and a champagne brunch on Sunday.
In addition to the meeting and
Founders Day weekend, the Shreveport
Alumni Club also sponsors rush events
and community service projects, and we
participate in active versus alumni
intramurals. Since our beginning we
have actively grown as a club and have
been extremely involved with the active
chapter. We have implemented a Chapter
Advisory Board, and it has worked well
with keeping the active and alumni
brothers in touch. We are looking forward
to another great year and encourage
any brothers in the area to contact
John Messier for further information.
This year, the St. Louis Alumni Club
had one of its most successful Founders
Day banquets ever. Held on April 30th at
the University Club, the event attracted
over 100 alumni from at least 15 chapters.
The event began with welcoming
remarks by Club President Tom Dolan
and the introduction of the club's current
officers. Following a moment of silence
for those members who had joined the
Chapter Grand, Tom Dolan reported on
the club's activities during the prior year,
which included a Christmas party at
Jalapeno's in Clayton and the annual
Softball game with Sigma Chi's
alumni club. We have won
the annual softball game
with Sigma Chi five out of
the last six years. Tom Dolan announced
plans to include Beta Theta Pi in this
year's softball tournament due to Sigma
Chi's inability to field a competitive softball
team. The alumni club then heard
reports from five of the state's undergraduate
chapters and on our efforts to
recolonize the chapter at St. Louis University.
New officers for the alumni club
were elected, the Golden Legion Ceremony
was performed for 13 alumni in
attendance, Richard Roloff, Washington
Umversity '51, was recognized as the
club's Phi of the Year, and Hollister Smith,
Arizona Alpha '30, received recognition
as a member of the Arizona Alpha Hall
of Fame.
The highlight of the evening came
when Tom Dolan introduced our special
guest speaker Mr. Bob Costas. Costas, a
graduate of Syracuse University, is a St.
Louis native and a broadcaster for NBC
Sports. He spoke at great length about his
experience with the University of Missouri
Tigers, St. Louis Hawks, the St.
Louis Cardinals, Major League Baseball
and the NBA. This was Bob's only night
off for the month because of the NBA
Finals broadcast schedule, and he spent
more than an hour answering questions
from the club. Everyone agreed that he
was one of the best speakers we've ever
had and that whoever speaks next year
will have a tough act to foUow.
The club would like to express its sincere
thanks to Past President Tom Dolan
for organizing the event and convincing
Bob Costas to be our guest speaker. He
really made the event a success. The St.
Louis Alumni Club meets for
lunch on the first Friday of every
month except December
at Corwin's in Brentwood.
All Phi Deks and their
guests are welcome.
