Rick McCaffrey wins
Miller Leadership Award
Richard B. McCaffrey has added
"Recipient of Phi Deha Theta's Robert J.
Miller Leadership Award" to an already
long list of achievements. The Miller
Award is presented annually to the undergraduate
Phi who has demonstrated
the most outstanding leadership in his
chapter and on his campus. Rick
McCaffrey fits the bill!
A senior Accounting and Finance
major. Rick is a member of
Kansas Beta chapter at Washburn
University. He boasts a perfect jw
4.0 GPA. It is no wonder he has ^^
served the chapter as Scholarship
Chairman, but he has also been
chapter Secretary, Alumni Secretary,
Community Service Chairman, and IFC
representative. Representing Phi Delta
Dl>es
Theta, he has served as both Vice
President and President of the IFC.
The recipient of many scholarships,
Rick has been on the President's Honor
Roll and the Dean's Honor Roll each of
his five semesters at Washburn. He is
listed in Who's Who in America.
To say that McCaffrey is very involved
on campus is truly an understatement.
He has been Speaker Pro Tempore,
Internal Affairs Chair and
Academic Affairs Chair of the
Washburn Student Association.
He has been named their Senator
of the Month on two occasions
and was named Senator of the
Year for 1996-1997. He has been
president of the College Republicans,
a member of the Executive Council
of Blue Key honor fraternity, and Vice
President of Education of Delta Sigma Pi
akota Alpha ''Own" tlie Priest Award
South Dakota Alpha chapter claims this year's Arthur R. Priest Award winner,
Michael J. Swartz. Yes, last year's Priest Award recipient, Dustin M. Johnson, was
also from South Dakota Alpha and so was the 1995 winner, Adam J. Kirsch.
Three Priest Awards have been garnered by one chapter in four years. That's
never happened before!
However in 1957 and 1958 Victor L. Backlund and William D. Long, both
members of Oregon Gamma chapter at Willamette University, won the Priest
Award. A few years later in 1971 and 1972, John W. Mize and Leslie G.
McLaughlin were back-to-back winners for Kansas Alpha at the University of
Kansas.
So, no. South Dakota Alpha does not "own" the Priest Award. But it is obvious
the chapter is outstanding—and even more obvious that it attracts and produces
men of distinction and quality!

member of Washburn's
debate squad which is
ranked 9th nationally. He
was Co-Committee
Chair of the Children's
Miracle Network Dance
Marathon and is a member
of the Order of
Omega honor society
and Gamma Sigma
Alpha honor society.
An award winning
marathon runner. Rick
was one of the founders
of the Washburn Runners' Club. He is an
Eagle Scout with bronze palms and is a
summer adult volunteer for a Boy Scout
troop.
Brother McCaffrey is a well-rounded,
energetic, bright young man. There is no
question he is a chapter and campus
leader. And he is most justifiably this
year's recipient of the Robert J. Miller
Leadership Award.
Victor Trevino garners second
"Pete" Lyon Scholarship
The Foundation's second Francis D. Lyon
Scholarship has been presented to Victor
Trevino, a senior with a dual major in
Cinema and Theatre at the University of
Southern California. A professional actor
for twelve years, Trevino is married and
has two children. He returned to school,
according to Marilyn Mclntyre, one of
his professors, "not just
for the degree, but for
the training, the development,
and because he
has discovered that along
with acting, he also loves
and has a gift for teaching,
directing and writing."
In an eloquent letter
of appreciation to the Foundation Trustees
for his $3,000 grant, Trevino wrote:
"Your support is an affirmation of the
power of education. Education is more
than learning. It exercises and develops
the mind. It cultivates character and individuality.
It infects us with the wisdom
and potential to become active partici-
