his judging
responsibilities, Brother
Samuel wrote,"... my
faith in the 'younger'
generation has been restored!
The young men
represented are a class
act—it was enjoyable
reading."
Everyone involved
with the Foimdation's
scholarship program
agrees with Ollie that
each of the men nominated was a class
act. To be sure, the Phis, their families,
and our other donors whose generous
support make our scholarships possible
also qualify for "class act" status! They
have our heartfelt thanks.
Mike Swartz named
Priest Award recipient
The Arthur R. Priest Award is presented
annually to Phi Delta Theta's most outstanding
undergraduate member. Each
year, as we await the chapters' nominations,
we wonder if one of the men nominated
will deserve to join the prestigious
ranks of the previous Priest Award winners.
We could have stopped worrying when
Mike Swartz's nomination arrived. Outstanding,
he is. Deserving, he most
certainly is.
Brother Swartz is a senior at the
University of South Dakota and a member
of South Dakota Alpha chapter. He is
a pre-Med student with a major in Liberal
Studies. His cumulative GPA in the
University's Honors Program is a perfect
4.0.
Mike is a member of Phi Beta Kappa,
Phi Eta Sigma and Omicron Delta Kappa
honor societies. He has been on
the Dean's List every semester.
He is a member of the Order of
Omega, Mortar Board and
Golden Key. Brother Swartz is the
recipient of numerous scholarships
including the USD School
of Medicine Alumni Student
Scholarship, a grant which guarantees
his admission to the Medical
School upon completion of his undergraduate
studies.
Mike served as Phikeia class treasurer
and was named Outstanding Phikeia. He
has represented South Dakota Alpha on
the Junior IFC and the IFC. He has been
the chapter's Assistant Treasurer and its
Treasurer. He has also served as Co-Rush

Mike is one of sbc members elected by
the student body to serve on the USD
Book and Supply Board of Directors. He
is also a member of the Program
Council News and Views Committee,
the committee that brings
speakers to campus. Proving his
versatility. Brother Swartz is the
disc jockey on the campus radio
station and the trumpet player
for the USD Jazz Ensemble.
Chapter officers wrote, "More
than anything else, Mike Swartz is a
model of integrity and honor. His word is
his bond, and he is trusted by everyone
who knows him... He lives his life as a
true man should, with an eye on helping
others... Mike is a leader, a friend and a
man of absolute integrity." Every member
of Phi Delta Theta is surely proud to call
him a brother.
