12 newest brothers. As a class,
they put together a remarkably
entertaining act for the
Alpha Chi Omega Lip Synch
Contest.
We also had the special
privilege of hosting the General
Council President Dr.
Robert Deloian, new Province
President Nick Candee, Jr.
along with Leadership Consultant
Vinnie Kahl at our
annual Founders Day alumni
dinner. Dr. Deloian had given
a talk earUer that day on alcohol-fi-ee
housing which was
attended by members of our
chapter and other fraternities
on campus. Before the alumni
dinner, we performed the
Founding Ceremony for the
first time. It was organized by
Cato Wagner '99.
On the campus and community
service fronts, the
chapter once again earned the
top fraternity ranking in the
1998 MIT Alumni Teledions
contest.
Toy Day, an event where we
make over 500 toys for underprivileged
children, was a success
as usual and received
local broadcast news coverage.
We hosted our second
annual Easter Egg Hunt
which was a success. Over 50
brothers and friends spent an
entire day hiding eggs, decorating
eggs, doing face paintings,
and playing games with
over 70 children from Boston
area shelters.
As the term comes to a
close, we will be supporting
brothers Matt Yarosz, Amro
Farid, Ajay Kulkarni, and
Mike Freedman as they run
the 102nd Boston Marathon.
Brother Yarosz will also be
Send
vying for the tide of Mr.
Spring Weekend at the end of
April. The chapter is considering
remodeling our kitchen
over the summer as efforts
begin on next year's rush.
Michigan Epsilon
Northwood University
The past year was Michigan
EpsUon's 15th anniversary,
and it brought a year of
change—especially involving
our relations with the community.
Over the course of the
year we completed over 200
service hours doing various
functions such as Domino's
Pizza and United Way pizza
bucks fund-raiser to benefit
the local United Way chapter.
Lunch Box Learner's reading
program at a local elementary
school, painting St. Brigid's
church rectory, and a dinner
and play for senior citizens.
We graduated 15 brothers,
our largest class ever. Good
luck to all of you, you will
truly be missed.
The past year saw nine
young men make the journey
from Phikeia to Phi, and we
eagerly look forward to a
strong rush come this fall and
winter term.
Last spring at Golden
Greek Awards two Phis received
outstanding academic
achievement awards. Brothers
Jon Bruner '98 and Mike
Thornton '99 both were recognized
for their continued
hard work and dedication in
the classroom. Congratulations
guys!
During the year we held
various fund-raisers which
included can drives and our
ScroU^phidelt'ghq.com.
annual and ever popular Buya-Phi
Auction. The money
raised from this helped fund
various activities which included
our 5th annual white
water rafting brotherhood
retreat in West Virginia. This
was truly enjoyed by all who
attended, and we encourage
more alumni to make the trip
this year.
We have a new, young and
charismatic executive board
that is striving to attain good
things for the chapter. We all
look forward to getting back
into Greek life at Northwood.
Ohio Gamma
Ohio University
The past two years have seen
an incredible resurgence for
Ohio Gamma, both as a force
on campus and internally.
Last year, in the annual
Greek week competition, we
achieved overall victory with
the help of Alpha Gamma
Delta and Delta Tau Delta. In
the fall, we took home a first
place trophy in the Homecoming
float competition. We
have also increased our community
service efforts
through such activities as
canned food drives, blood
drives, repairing children's
bikes, after-school programs,
and Adopt-A-Highway.
In this time, chapter membership
has nearly tripled, we
have revamped the Phikeia
education program, and improved
relations with both
General Headquarters and the
Ohio University administration.
Part of the success of the
Phikeia program can be attributed
to the work of
pledgemaster, Michael Willits.
He has compiled a pledgemaster's
handbook, big
brother's handbook, and a
Phikeia handbook. He also
implemented a Phikeia education
committee and a Pallas
committee to oversee Phikeia
progress and development.
Since we do not currendy
own a chapter house, we are
searching for a lodge as a
place to hold rush, chapter
activities, and alumni events.
With increased alumni support,
the prospects for securing
a lodge look promising.
Alumnus Joe Gill has also
helped to organize an Educational
Foundation for the
chapter to further encourage
academic achievement.
A solid foundation has
been laid to ensure a bright
future.—Brad Mantel
Indiana Theta
Purdue University
I would like to mention that
Phi Delta Theta at Purdue
University was recentiy
named the "Most Attractive
Kart and Crew" in die 1998
Purdue Grand Prix. The
award is given to a team for
having the most professional
looking go-kart and crew
uniforms in the race.
The Purdue Grand Prix is
known as "The Greatest Spectacle
in College Racing," and
is the finale to a series of
week-long campus activities
in the spring. This year marks
the 41st anniversary of the
race which attracts people
from all over the country. Although
we didn't win the race
this year, we will next year.
Our driver was in 5th place
on lap 137 of 160, when he
was caught in a 5-car pileup
and was forced out of the
race. Only 14 go-karts actually
finished the race, yet we
still finished 13th out of 33
karts.
Our driver is Quinn
Thalheimer '99, and crew
chief is Mark Van Etten '99.
