ON CAMPUS 1 Chapter Awards Kanasas Zeta, Mississippi Beta, Iowa Gamma and Ontario Gamma win the Fraternity's top trophies by Michael Goodman, Moe Stevens and Nathan Thomas On Saturday, June 20, 1998 Phi Deka Theta honored four chapters at the Closing Grand Banquet of the 72nd General Convention and Sesquicentennial celebration. These chapters were recognized for their outstanding achievements during the 1997-1998 school year. Each chapter won one of four coveted awards. The Kanasas City, Founders and Harvard Trophies are won on the basis of overall chapter excellence, chapter size, school size, and the number of fraternities on their campus. The Housser Trophy is awarded to the most outstanding Canadian chapter. The Kansas City The Kansas Cky Trophy was originally presented in 1928 by the Cleveland Alumni Club. In 1958 die Kansas Cky Alumni Club took over sponsorship for the award. The 1997-1998 winner boasted twelve men on the Dean's List, as well as four academic Ail-Americans, and two Who's Who in Ameri can College representatives. The chapter was extremely involved with campus life including the Student Body President and two student government executive officers. In addi tion to being scholars and leaders in the classroom and in student government, they were leaders on the athletic field. All forty of the chapter's mem hers are varsity athletes. They are not just athletes, but captains, all conference performers, national qualifiers, newcomers of the year, and an All-American. This chapter was awarded a General Headquarters Trophy, a Community Service Citation and Outstanding Chapter by their school. Kansas Zeta at Southwestern College of Winfield, Kansas, was the 1997-1998 Kansas City Trophy winner for the first time in the chapter's history. Honorable Mention winners were Nebraska Gamma at Creighton University and New Mexico Alpha at the University of New Mexico. The Founders Trophy The Founders Trophy was first presented in 1929 and was donated by Judge William R. Baynes, Ohio Wesleyan '01. The current trophy was purchased after the Kansas City Convention in 1990 by Mississippi Alpha, which has won the Founders Trophy more times than any other chapter. The winner was recognized by their campus and the Fraternity wkh awards in many aspects of chapter operation. The chapter placed third scholastically out of 18 fraternkies over the academic year, including 24 men on scholarship with the universky. Twenty-one of the men are involved in honor societies including Phi Eta Sigma, Omicron Deka Kappa, Mortar Board, and Order of Omega. Their Greek advisor said, "The standard of excellence that the chapter of Phi Delta Theta has set in their brief history on campus has been impressive. They continue to be the standard by which we will judge in the future." For the first time in this young chapter's history, Mississippi Beta at Mississippi State Universky was the 1997- 1998 Founders Trophy winner. The Honorable Mention winner was Mississippi Alpha at the University of Mississippi. The Harvard Trophy The Harvard Trophy originated in 1924 when fifty Phis who were attending graduate school at Harvard were discussing the progress of the Fraternity. The award has been given to the chapters demonstrating overall excellence in the classroom, on campus, and on the athletic field at the Fraternity's larger chapters, schools, and Greek systems. This year's Harvard Trophy winner excel in one of the country's top rated Greek systems year after year. Scholastically, the chapter placed fourth of 31 fraternkies over the academic year. They had 18 men on the university's Dean's Honor List. The chapter had 40 men who are members of Mortar Board, Order of Omega, Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Eta Sigma, and Phi Beta Kappa honor societies. They not only excelled academically, they were the leaders on campus. The chapter is heavily involved with IFC and Student Government. The chapter recently gained recognition for their involvement on campus by being awarded the university's Presidential Award for Fraternal Excellence including outstanding recruitment, scholarship, and communky service programs. The chapter was also Greek Week champion, runnerup at VEISHA, and worked with organizations such as the Jaycees and the American Heart Association. For the third consecutive year and 13th time in the chapter's history, Iowa Gamma at Iowa State University was the 1997-1998 Harvard Trophy winner. 26 THE SCROLL SUMMER 1998
The Housser Trophy The George E. Housser Trophy is awarded to the Canadian chapter whicf best meets criteria based on scholarship, mternal administration, finance, community service, and performance of the Ritual. The original trophy, a Canadian Eskimo soapstone carving, was presented by the Vancouver Alumni Club in honor of George E. Housser, McGill '06, the first Canadian President of the General CouncU, 1950-52. The Housser Trophy winner was definitely deservmg of the award. To be rewarded as the most outstanding chapter Ul Canada signifies the strength and leadership which mirrors the Kansas City, Founders, and Harvard Award winning chapters. In the history of this chapter, they have gained recognition from the Fraternity for excellence and service almost every year. This past year the chapter had many great accomplishments, largely in the area of community service. They raised over $900 and contributed, on average, eighty hours per man of service during the academic year. The chapter's devotion to community service and philanthropic causes helped them capture Honorable Mention for the Lubbock Trophy. They also received Honorable Mention for the William Allen White Alumni Newsletter and were winners of the Dallas Alumni Award. The 1997-1998 George E. Housser Trophy was awarded to Ontario Gamma at McMaster University for the seventh straight year. Other award winners The Samuel V. Stone Chapter Adviser of the Year Award winner was Allan Paul, Manitoba '74, adviser for Ontario Alpha at the University of Toronto. Richard R. Meyer, California-Berkeley '62, adviser for Washington Epsilon at Eastern Washington University, was the runner-up. The Nance-Millett free enterprise award was received by Paul H. Smucker, Miami '39. Thel997-1998 recipient of the Robert W. Hoysgaard Alumni Club Achievement Award was the Sarasota Alumni Club of Florida.
