Chapter Awards<br />

Kanasas Zeta, Mississippi Beta, Iowa Gamma and<br />

Ontario Gamma win the Fraternity's top trophies<br />

On Saturday, June 20, <strong>1998</strong> <strong>Phi</strong> Deka<br />

<strong>Theta</strong> honored four chapters at the Closing<br />

Grand Banquet of the 72nd General<br />

Convention and Sesquicentennial celebration.<br />

These chapters were recognized<br />

for their outstanding achievements<br />

during the 1997-<strong>1998</strong> school year.<br />

Each chapter won one of four coveted<br />

awards. The Kanasas City, Founders and<br />

Harvard Trophies are won on the basis of<br />

overall chapter excellence, chapter size,<br />

school size, and the number of fraternities<br />

on their campus. The Housser<br />

Trophy is awarded to the most<br />

outstanding Canadian chapter.<br />

The Kansas City<br />

The Kansas Cky<br />

Trophy was originally<br />

presented in<br />

1928 by the Cleveland<br />

Alumni Club.<br />

In 1958 die Kansas<br />

Cky Alumni Club<br />

took over sponsorship<br />

for the award.<br />

The 1997-<strong>1998</strong> winner<br />

boasted twelve men on the<br />

Dean's List, as well as four<br />

academic Ail-Americans,<br />

and two Who's Who in Ameri<br />

can College representatives.<br />

The chapter was extremely involved<br />

with campus life including<br />

the Student Body President and<br />

two student government executive<br />

officers. In addi<br />

tion to being scholars<br />

and leaders in the classroom<br />

and in student<br />

government, they were<br />

leaders on the athletic<br />

field. All forty of<br />

the chapter's mem<br />

hers are varsity<br />

athletes. They are not just athletes, but<br />

captains, all conference performers, national<br />

qualifiers, newcomers of the year,<br />

and an All-American. This chapter was<br />

awarded a General Headquarters Trophy,<br />

a Community Service Citation and Outstanding<br />

Chapter by their school.<br />

Kansas Zeta at Southwestern College<br />

of Winfield, Kansas, was the 1997-<strong>1998</strong><br />

Kansas City Trophy winner for the first<br />

time in the chapter's history. Honorable<br />

Mention winners were Nebraska Gamma<br />

at Creighton University and New Mexico<br />

Alpha at the University of New Mexico.<br />

The Founders Trophy<br />

The Founders Trophy was<br />

first presented in<br />

1929 and was donated<br />

by Judge<br />

William R.<br />

Baynes, Ohio<br />

Wesleyan '01. The<br />

current trophy was<br />

purchased after the<br />

Kansas City Convention<br />

in 1990 by Mississippi<br />

Alpha, which has<br />

won the Founders Trophy<br />

more times than any other<br />

chapter.<br />

The winner was recognized<br />

by their campus and the Fraternity<br />

wkh awards in many aspects<br />

of chapter operation. The chapter<br />

placed third scholastically out<br />

of 18 fraternkies over the<br />

academic year, including<br />

24 men on scholarship<br />

with the universky.<br />

Twenty-one of the men<br />

are involved in honor<br />

societies including<br />

<strong>Phi</strong> Eta<br />

Sigma, Omicron Deka Kappa, Mortar<br />

Board, and Order of Omega. Their<br />

Greek advisor said, "The standard of excellence<br />

that the chapter of <strong>Phi</strong> <strong>Delta</strong><br />

<strong>Theta</strong> has set in their brief history on<br />

campus has been impressive. They continue<br />

to be the standard by which we will<br />

judge in the future."<br />

For the first time in this young<br />

chapter's history, Mississippi Beta at Mississippi<br />

State Universky was the 1997-<br />

<strong>1998</strong> Founders Trophy winner. The<br />

Honorable Mention winner was Mississippi<br />

Alpha at the University of Mississippi.<br />

The Harvard Trophy<br />

The Harvard Trophy originated in<br />

1924 when fifty <strong>Phi</strong>s who were attending<br />

graduate school at Harvard were discussing<br />

the progress of the Fraternity. The<br />

award has been given to the chapters<br />

demonstrating overall excellence in the<br />

classroom, on campus, and on the athletic<br />

field at the Fraternity's larger chapters,<br />

schools, and Greek systems.<br />

This year's Harvard Trophy winner<br />

excel in one of the country's top rated<br />

Greek systems year after year. Scholastically,<br />

the chapter placed fourth of 31 fraternkies<br />

over the academic year. They<br />

had 18 men on the university's Dean's<br />

Honor List. The chapter had 40 men<br />

who are members of Mortar Board, Order<br />

of Omega, <strong>Phi</strong> Kappa <strong>Phi</strong>, <strong>Phi</strong> Eta<br />

Sigma, and <strong>Phi</strong> Beta Kappa honor societies.<br />

They not only excelled academically,<br />

they were the leaders on campus. The<br />

chapter is heavily involved with IFC and<br />

Student Government. The chapter recently<br />

gained recognition for their involvement<br />

on campus by being awarded<br />

the university's Presidential Award for<br />

Fraternal Excellence including outstanding<br />

recruitment, scholarship, and communky<br />

service programs. The chapter<br />

was also Greek Week champion, runnerup<br />

at VEISHA, and worked with organizations<br />

such as the Jaycees and the<br />

American Heart Association.<br />

For the third consecutive year and<br />

13th time in the chapter's history, Iowa<br />

Gamma at Iowa State University was the<br />

1997-<strong>1998</strong> Harvard Trophy winner.<br />
