Baseball<br />

Leadmg 49-17 USC to the NCAA<br />

Division I championship was third<br />

baseman Morgan Ensberg, who earned<br />

All-American third team honors. He<br />

became the Trojans' first-ever 20-20<br />

player with 21 home runs and 20 stolen<br />

bases while battmg .344 (84 of 244)<br />

with 69 runs batted in. Morgan also led<br />

USC in runs scored (74), doubles (22)<br />

and walks (48). He was also on the AU-<br />

Pac-10 first team. All-West Region second<br />

team and All-East Regional<br />

playoffs first team.<br />

Morgan hit three home runs in an<br />

April 28* game against San Diego State<br />

and had a career-best 6 RBI game versus<br />

Arizona State on March 14th. In the<br />

CWS tide game win over the Sun Devils,<br />

he had two hits and stole home.<br />

When the team returned to Los Angeles,<br />

he carried the championship trophy<br />

off the plane.<br />

Morgan is now third in<br />

career homers (40) and<br />

runs scored (175)<br />

and fourth in career<br />

walks (124). A ninth<br />

round draft pick of<br />

the Houston Astros,<br />

he reported to the<br />

team's Auburn farm<br />

club in the New<br />

York-Penn<br />

League.<br />

reliever Mike Weibling, who got into<br />

several games during the CWS. He appeared<br />

record and picked up his only save<br />

against Fordham in the East Regional<br />

playoffs.<br />

Drafted 17* by the <strong>Phi</strong>ladelpTiia<br />

<strong>Phi</strong>llies in the summer free agent draft<br />

was Midwest Conference Co-MVP Matt<br />

"Chip" Denure of Ripon. He ranked<br />

38* in NCAA Division III battmg with<br />

a .456 average (57 of 127) and also had<br />

7 homers and 28 RBI. Chip jomed the<br />

<strong>Phi</strong>llies' Batavia club in the New York-<br />

Penn League.<br />

Third baseman John Douglas<br />

captamed the 18-18-1 Cornell team<br />

and was third in hitting with .320 (29<br />

of 122). He led the squad with 24 runs<br />

scored and 10 doubles while also winning<br />

2 games on the mound. Also seeing<br />

action were reliever Ryan Banas of<br />

Purdue (15 games, 2 saves), infielder<br />

Ryan Metzger of the 41-20-1 Baylor<br />

Division I playoff team, lefty Clarke<br />

Roberts of Virginia and righthander<br />

Ed Hernberger of Pacific.<br />

The second-leading hitter for<br />

Davidson was first baseman Stewart<br />

Sloan with a .320 average (55 of 172).<br />

He also had 37 RBI and a team best 16<br />

doubles. Outfielder Brian Joyce also<br />

played well for the Wildcats, battmg<br />

.270 (48 of 177) with team highs of 34<br />

stolen bases (14* in Division I-A), 42<br />

runs and 29 walks. Other <strong>Phi</strong>s seeing<br />

action for Davidson included catcher<br />

Kurt Davis (3 homers, team high 15<br />

hk-by-pitches), third baseman Ryan<br />

Conatser (3 homers), pkcher Eric<br />

Bowers (3 wins) and pitcher Jamie<br />

McDonald (17 appearances).<br />

Earning All-RMAC second team<br />

honors for Nebraska-Kearney was<br />

pitcher Brian Buscher. He led in<br />

innings pitched (60.2) and ERA; tied<br />

for the lead in wms (5-3) and struck<br />

out 45 batters. Teammate Chris<br />

Kankousky hit<br />

.318 in 12 games<br />

as a backup second<br />

baseman for<br />

the Antelopes.<br />

Pitcher Bob<br />

Weston of Washington<br />

& Lee<br />

ranked ninth in<br />

NCAA Division<br />

III earned run<br />

Weston<br />

average (1.88 in 62.1 innings). He was<br />

5-2 with 57 strikeouts on the way to<br />

All-ODAC and Virgmia College Division<br />

All-State first team honors. He<br />

threw a two-hk shutout against<br />

Bridgewater and became the school's<br />

career wins leader with 15.<br />

Sixteen <strong>Phi</strong>s were on the Hanover<br />

squad. The three top hitters were third<br />

baseman Andy Southworth at .394 (50<br />

of 127); catcher Troy Abbs at .379 (with<br />

a team high 5 homers); and first sacker<br />

Josh Purvis at .375 (with a team high<br />

25 RBI). Other good hitters were shortstop<br />

Chad Howard (.302), infielder<br />

Ryan Scherer (.295), infielder Jason<br />

Johnson (.258) and outfielder Steve<br />

Tucker (.252). On the mound were Wes<br />

Anderson, Andy Turner, Clint Jarboe<br />

and Nick Reed.<br />

The DePauw squad was dominated<br />

by 15 <strong>Phi</strong> Deks. Catcher Dan Jones led<br />

wkh a .372 average while College Division<br />

Academic All-American shortstop<br />

Tom Fagan was second with .362, while<br />

leading with 42 hks, 29 runs and 24<br />

RBI. Also playing well for the Tigers<br />

were outfielder Brad Fleck (.286,23<br />

RBI) and infidder Rob Kiburz (.250).<br />

Seeing mound duty were John Georgy,<br />

Jeff Hartzell, Kent Works and Derek<br />

Coe.<br />

Six <strong>Phi</strong>s were key contributors at<br />
