CAMPUS
ing as well as chaUenging due
to the devastating flood that
hit the Grand Forks area in
the spring of 19%. Our house
lost its basement However, as
the rest of our community is
rebuilding, we are doing not
only that, but we are adding a
three-level addition. It will
consist of two sleeping rooms,
a study area, and an alumni
room. An outstanding effort
was made by David Jokerst,
who raised Sl,700 which was
donated to OMI cook, Lorraine
Olien to assist her ^vith flood
relief.
Despite the flood, ND Alpha
was able to have a \er\
successful fall rush. We initiated
21 outstanding new
members, and at the completion
of the first semester we
had a total of 85 members. ^Ve
also had six members become
alunmi, they were Chris Suda,
Erik Moquist, Trevor Feist,
Justin Rodgers, Shannon
Horton, and Matt Skogen. In
addition, we have distinguished
ourselves by being
the intramural champions for
the third consecutive year, as
well as having the most student
senators of all Greek
houses on campus. The chapter
was able to host a haunted
house this last Halloween to
earn money for the local
Y.M.C.A.
All in the fall of 1997 was a
very successful semester for
us, and with the completion
of our new addition, the new
year looks very promising.
Kent State University
The brothers of Ohio
Lambda have enjoyed an exciting
fall semester. ^Ve started
off wth another successful
rush including an innovative
"siunmer rush day." Soon
thereafter we held our 10th
Washington U. Phis help area youth
Phis on the Washington Umversity (SL Louis) JbotbaU
team invited Big Brotiiers/Big Sisters to campus to meet
members of die team and enjoy a day at the university.
.Annual 75-Hour VoUeybaU
Marathon for Leukemia. This
philanthropy is held in honor
of brother Joe Perez who died
of leukemia during the
recolonization of the chapter.
We raised more than 51,000
and donated part of the
money to the family of Bob
Stepnicka ,'92, whose father
has recendy been diagnosed
with leukemia. In other news,
we had a terrific homecoming
with Phis from Kent and
nearby Akron in attendance.
Brother Paul Kitchen (Bond
number one) was present The
brothers of Ohio Lambda are
especially delighted that our
new chapter house is slowly
becoming a reality. Under the
leadership of the Phi Ganoma
Theta house corporation and
a design by alunmus Rob
Barthebnan, the new fedlity
will house 20 brothers and be
equipped with a computer lab,
library, and study room.
Ground breaking is set for the
spring. Our chapter received a
"Greeks of the \Veek" award
for having outstanding risk
management. Near the end of
this semester the chapter
voted to become an alcoholfree
chapter as of March 15,
1998. We are very excited and
somewhat anxious. Matthew
Butts, KSU's Greek Advisor,
stated we are on the cutting
edge of fraternities on our
campus. We are also proud to
announce that Jon Nelson was
elected to scholarship chairman
of IFC. Because of our
tradition of controlling the
IFC executive board, chapters
voted earlier this semester to
allow only two members of
any chapter to sit on the
board. On December 9, we
had several brothers honored
at the km awards banquet.
Recipients of the Leadership
Excellence Award were: Jason
Clause, Justin Denuning, Ryan
Olman, Brian Self, Abhi Singh,
and Brian Smith. Recipients
for the Senior Recognition
Award were: Collin Boetger,
Keith Cua, Brian Irwin, Paul
Jacoby, and Ryan Keating. Recipients
of the Community
Excellence Award were: Jason
Clause, for his work as Community
AfiEairs Chair of the
Undergraduate Student Senate,
and Mike Haehn, for his
^
work as Philanthropy Chair of
the Inter-Greek Programming
Board. Ironically, the Community
Excellence Award, regarded
as highly prestigious
by the directors of campus
life, is historically given to
only one person. The brothers
finished off the semester
fourth in grades, which is a
great improvement from last
semester, and We are looking
forward to another strong
semester in the spring.
Ontario Gamma
McMaster University
With its decision to go alcohol
free, the chapter has
had many hurdles to overcome
above and beyond the
normal operations of a chapter.
Some members of the
chapter were divided by their
opposing \'iews on the decision.
However, this division
was healed by October
through much discussion and
compromise. In the past year,
Ontario Gamma has defined a
set of unique goals and objectives
to improve the overall
performance of the chapter.
Specific goals were implemented
to increase the
chapter's membership and to
raise the chapter's awareness
on campus and in the surrounding
community. We
have refined our rush tactics
and as a result we had 19 new
recruits last semester. The future
looks bright for Ontario
Gamma as we continue to
operate in accordance with
our founding principles.
