MENUHIN COMPETITION: LONDON 2016
WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO
The Menuhin Competition is the world’s leading International competition for
young violinists and the focus of an 11 day festival celebrating the very best of
the most challenging and rewarding of musical instruments – the violin.
Yehudi Menuhin, aged 12
Experience in excellence
Founded in 1983 by Yehudi Menuhin, one of the
greatest violinists of the 20th Century, the only
event of its kind to take place in a different world
city every two years for exceptionally talented
young violinists under the age of 22. London
will be the next host in 2016 for the elevenday
festival of concerts and events with the
Competition at its heart.
The Menuhin Competition Jury – chosen from
world-class musicians – takes an active part in the
event, leading a series of chamber concerts and
masterclasses alongside the young participants.
The competition takes place in an exceptional
atmosphere of learning and cultural exchange. It
culminates in the selection of two rising stars who
then perform in a glittering closing gala concert.
The Competition is governed by a board of
trustees, which includes Yehudi Menuhin’s
grandson Aaron Menuhin. Former first prize
winner Joji Hattori is President. Duncan Greenland
chairs the Trust Board and its Executive
Committee, on which Gordon Back is Artistic
Director.
Competition snapshot
Attracting 60% more entries than other major
international violin competitions, the Menuhin
Competition attracts hundreds of applications
from more than thirty countries around the world.
Of these, forty two young players are selected
to compete as Juniors (under 16) or Seniors
(under 22).
They perform a challenging repertoire before
the high-profile Jury which, over the history of
the Competition, has earned an impeccable
reputation for fair judgement.
“ Our young gifted violinists will
be the ambassadors of goodwill,
for they come with pure hearts
and music in their souls. It is in
these younger people that we
invest our future.”
THE COMPETITION IN LONDON
7-17 APRIL 2016
The United Kingdom does not currently host a world-class
international violin competition. The celebration in 2016 of the 100th
anniversary of Yehudi Menuhin’s birth presents the ideal opportunity
to put that right and bring the Competition to London.
Lord Menuhin lived much of his life in Britain and held British citizenship.
As well as founding the Menuhin Competition, he also established the
Yehudi Menuhin School and Live Music Now!
We are delighted that the Menuhin Competition has been welcomed
back to London and the UK for 2016 by the British government, and
has also been given the full support of the Mayor of London and
London & Partners.
MENUHIN COMPETITION: LONDON 2016
“ It is wonderful that the prestigious Menuhin Competition is coming
back to London in 2016, the centenary year of the great maestro.
This exciting showcase of some of the best young violinists from
across the globe will be a feast for music fans, which I hope will inspire
other gifted young people in the capital and across the country.
One of my ambitions is to see more young Londoners taking up
a musical instrument, through the Mayor’s Music Fund and other
initiatives, and any event that raises the profile of talented young
musicians is to be welcomed.”
From Folkestone, a small seaside town in England in 1983, to the capital
of China in 2012 and the United States in 2014, the Menuhin Competition
has become the most sought-after world event for violin talent under the
age of 22.
The Competition continually attracts the interest of the world’s leaders. In
2010 the King of Norway was royal patron of the Competition in Oslo. The
2012 Competition in Beijing, was attended by the Vice President Xi Jinping
and the prize-giving ceremony was hosted by the US Ambassador who
announced that the 2014 Competition would be taking place in America
OUR APPROACH
TO SPONSORSHIP
We will tailor your sponsorship to ensure that we help you meet your aims
and objectives
HELPING YOUR COMPANY PERFORM
We can gear your benefits more towards Clients, Employees or Brand Exposure or
spread them across all three areas. As part of our personalised approach we will tailor
your bespoke package to include the areas of most benefit to you.
HELPING YOUR BRAND PERFORM
We know that increasing your brand’s performance and delivering your vision to an
increasing number of potential clients is essential, with that in mind we are able to
offer exposure for your company through print, online, social and broadcast media.
Full details of our media reach can be found in each proposal outline.
OUR APPROACH
TO SPONSORSHIP
CLIENT HOSPITALITY, CULTIVATION and STEWARDSHIP
At the Menuhin Competition we all appreciate how important it is to look after
clients throughout their relationship with you and what better way than to offer
them money can’t buy experiences in the Arts with the Menuhin Competition
London 2016.
EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT
Maintaining a productive and happy work force is integral to any business’s
ongoing success. With the ever growing demands on time and results delivery
on employees, the ability to offer added benefits goes a long way to helping
retain employees. Music is such an integral part of our everyday lives, most of us
use this as form of relaxation and to help wind down from a busy often stressful
work day even without realising. We can help impart Lord Menuhin’s philosophy
that music unites and is good for the soul and our mental wellbeing.
to continue to plan, prepare and
execute arrangements for the
2016 Competition on the 100th
anniversary of Menuhin’s birth.
Two years of careful preparation
• Global marketing to conservatories and violin
teachers around the world to continue to
attract the finest entrants.
• Selection of the Jury from among the world’s
most distinguished violin soloists and teachers
(all of whom will both perform and give a
masterclass during the competition).
• Planning the artistic programme in cooperation
with the host organisations.
• Pre-selection Jury meeting under the direction
of the Artistic Director to choose forty four
contestants from the hundreds of applications
received.
Delivery to the highest standards
• Major professional orchestras, conductors,
soloists for the Opening Concert (featuring past
prizewinners) and the Closing Gala Concert
(featuring as soloists the junior and senior first
prizewinners).
• Recitals and concerts featuring members
of the Competition Jury.
• Programme of musical outreach giving
performance opportunities to participants
who do not proceed into the final rounds
of the Competition.
• A day of masterclasses given by each Jury
Member to competitors and selected
conservatory students from the host city.
• The Competition itself (with the first round
and semi-finals leading into the junior and
senior final).
• Live web stream of the Competition around
the world.
Supporting prizewinners after
the Competition
Close contact is maintained with prizewinners –
the new ‘Menuhin Laureates’ – as they start their
performing careers, guiding them to suitable
performing engagements as soloists and in
private for Menuhin Competition patrons, as well
as with major orchestras and at music festivals
around the world.
MENUHIN COMPETITION: LONDON 2016
“It is uncompetitive in the sense that it is the direction and quality of
growth and progress along the way which is recorded, a time when
many changes may yet take place, halfway along the race-track,
and it is not the end-winner who will be crowned. Thus, I anticipate
a very happy occasion, heart-warming and instructive, valuable for
youngsters and teachers alike.“
Yehudi Menuhin - 1983, his words from the first competition
“What counts today is no longer one or two brilliant performances but the
depth of a musical nature, its foundation, its vigour and the sustained quality
of its contribution to our musical life.
“ I am proud that the UK continues
to be the home of the Menuhin
Competition and the driver of
its international outreach. Both
countries are the richer for it –
as were we all.”
