General Information about Moving Heavy Machinery
• The Federal government does not issue regulations for moving heavy
machinery. Guidelines to move heavy equipments are dealt individually by the
state.
• Rules govern the limit set for length, height, width and weight of the vehicle
carrying the machine
• Machines that weigh 10,000 pounds or more and need tracks or wheels to
move them are classified heavy machinery.
Regulations in California
• The maximum width is 17 inches, height is 16 in and length 135 inches for a
vehicle to be classified as super load. Drivers may have to check for permitted
classified according to their weight and routed accordingly. (For more
• When permit is required and granted, the license will include the travel time.
• Vehicles carrying 52,000 lbs of machine (on tandem axles) or those that do not
need escort vehicles can travel 24x7.
• Those that need permit are usually not allowed to travel from 6 am to 9 am in
Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento and San Francisco. Neither are they
allowed to travel between 3.00 pm to 6 pm in the evening in the same areas.
