Shaking hands with the new superintendent
Wendell Chu to lead East Islip School District
By JEFFREY BESSEN
ISLIP TERRACE — As a sixth-grade teacher, he
promised to shake the hand of everyone he taught
when they graduated high school, and he did, as he
walked amongst his past charges on graduation day.
Now it is Wendell Chu who is graduating and leaving
the Fire Island School District, where he has been
the educational leader since 2001, to take the reins of
the seven-building East Islip School District.
Chu, a 35-year veteran of public education, was
selected from a national search conducted by Manhattan-based
School Leadership, LLC, and officially
announced as superintendent during Tuesday’s board
of education (BOE) meeting.
“I am excited and thrilled to have the opportunity,”
said Chu, an East Setauket resident, who is well
regarded among his peers throughout Long Island
and the state.
Originally from Honolulu, Hawaii, he graduated
from Colgate University in upstate Hamilton and
earned a masters of science and a professional diploma
in educational administration from Hofstra University.
Beginning in the Comsewogue School District as a
teacher and coach, Chu became an elementary
school principal in the Three Village School District
before advancing to superintendent on Fire Island.
Currently, he is president-elect (2009-10 school
year) of the Suffolk County School Superintendents
Association, the legislative co-chair of the Council of
School Superintendents, serves on the governing
board of the nationwide American Association of
School Administrators and chair of the WLIW (Channel
21) Educational Services Advisory Committee.
However, according to Gary Lamm, presently the
president of East Islip’s BOE, Chu was selected not
only for his organizational resume, but for his skills
as a communicator.
“He was able to articulate a vision, he is a good listener
and stood out among the other candidates,”
said Lamm, who noted Chu’s “genuine care for children’s
education as well as wanting to do the best for
the community as a whole.”
It is part of the style he cultivated, Chu said, that he
seeks to engage a broad scope of people in the con-
Sagtikos Manor holds annual collectibles fair
By LIZ FINNEGAN
WEST BAY SHORE — A brilliant
summer day proved to be the perfect
backdrop for a fair, and its location at
Sagtikos Manor was ideal for the
event last Saturday, as well.
The fifth annual Sagtikos Manor
Antiques and Collectibles Fair drew a
steady stream of visitors to the Suffolk
County-owned historic site to take in
the displays, and mingle with a former
president, too.
Visitors passed outdoor booths filled
with vintage china, linens and jewelry.
An early Victorian wood laundry
wringer and an 1875 slant top pine
desk seemed to pique quite a bit of
interest.
“It’s a nice spot for an outdoor
show,” said Marion Voss, one of the
many vendors at the fair. “I like all of
the vendors and displays,” said Marie
Campanella of East Islip, who attends
the fair every year with her daughter,
Ginny Cornacchioli.
Cornacchioli said she visited
Sagtikos Manor on a school field trip
when she was in the third grade. “I still
have the postcards I bought here back
then,” she said. “Now, I collect postcards.”
Nancy Donohue, president of
Sagtikos Manor Historical Society,
said the event is just the first of many
more that are scheduled to be held
there through the end of the year.
“These types of events help acquaint
people with the Manor,” she noted.
“So many people have lived in the area
for years and never before visited.”
The history of the 42-room mansion
nestled amid 10 sylvan acres of land
spans three centuries, beginning in
1697 when it was purchased by
Stephanus Van Cortlandt, the first
native-born mayor of New York City.
It then passed through several more
owners until Jonathan Thompson purchased
it in 1758 as a gift for his son
Isaac. It remained in the Thompson-
Gardiner family until it was purchased
by the county in 2002.
Its place in history was sealed during
the Revolutionary War when it was
Brightwaters resident Lawrence DeMarco as George Washington at the
Sagtikos Manor fair last Saturday.
IB/Finnegan
seized as lodging and headquarters for
British General Henry Clinton and
some of his officers. In 1790, the
younger Thompson, a former supervisor
of Islip Town (1776-1785), hosted
President George Washington for the
night during his tour of Long Island.
The Manor currently maintains
much of its original details and furnishings.
Its illustrious history is ably
narrated by costumed docents during
tours of the house.
On Saturday, docent Celeste Topazio
beguiled a group of anxious first-time
visitors by saying, “Be prepared to
take a step back in time.”
Outside the Manor, President
George Washington—Lawrence
DeMarco of Brightwaters—greeted
visitors and posed for photos. And he
was much honored to do so.
“If you think about all of the things
George Washington did to create our
nation … what he went through … it
was profound,” DeMarco said. “It’s
moving to be dressed as him and to
see how people relate to the character.
Everyone seems to have a [fondness]
for the man. It’s cool.”
Donohue said she was pleased by
the public’s reaction at the Manor that
day and hopes that enthusiasm will
continue during upcoming events. She
said coming to the local historic site is
a great alternative to traveling hundreds
of miles away for a similar experience.
Her motto for this summer vacation
season: Save gas by coming to visit
Sagtikos Manor, and learn about the
history of our country.
Sagtikos Manor is located on Montauk
Highway in West Bay Shore. It is
open for tours on Sundays in June
from 1 to 4 p.m. Tours are offered in
July and August from 1 to 4 p.m.,
Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday. For
two-story, 136,971-square foot new
structure occurred last Friday outside
an old building that once housed
Northrop-Grumman and has stood
vacant since 1995, according MRA
President Joseph Farkas.
It is one of three buildings in the
business center currently overseen
by Farkas and his partners, Ronen
Katz and Adam Schwartz. Located on
the south service road of Sunrise
Highway, the complex has begun to
attract some high-profile tenants,
Farkas said.
“Aetna Healthcare, Citizens Bank,
Hearst Business Media, Lessings Food
Services—not small names on Long
Island,” Farkas said. “This is a tremendous,
tremendous opportunity to create
a community within a project.”
For Farkas and the town, the name
of the game is tenants and jobs. Bill
Mannix, director of Islip’s Economic
Development Division, said there was
an interest in the site for a retail center
such as Tanger Outlets, big box retailers,
or a multiplex movie theater.
Though those entities do create jobs
Metropolitan Realty Associates (MRA) is set to build a new 300 building at the Sunrise Business Center on the south
service road of Sunrise Highway in Great River. From left are: Islip Economic Director Bill Mannix, Councilman Gene
BAY SHORE — Tents and tables of
food littered the fields of Bay Shore
High School last Saturday, providing
Relay for Life participants with a resting
place and nourishment throughout
the night, as this community is willing
to lose sleep as long as it is for a good
cause.
Almost everybody knows someone
who has or had cancer and this event
represents the hope for a cancer cure
and a tribute to those who lost their
fight against cancer, as well as support
for those who face cancer today.
Relay for Life is American Cancer
Society’s signature event in which
community members form teams and
have a representative from their team
walking on the track at all times.
Primarily it is a fundraiser in which
each participant is recommended to
have a fundraising goal of $100. However,
the only requirement is a $10
commitment fee due upon registration.
This relay went from 6 p.m. on
June 21 to 6 a.m. on June 22.
This was the Bay Shore-Brightwaters
community’s second Relay for Life
event, and students and residents
formed 35 teams. “It’s turned out wonderful;
we have more teams than last
year,” said Gail Tuohey, director of
Special Events for the Suffolk County
Division of the American Cancer Society.
“The community has been fabulous.”
Tuohey runs four out of the 19
relays on Long Island this year.
Jackie Doherty, a Bay Shore resident
whose daughter, Holly Malforth, was a
team captain for this relay, solicited
local businesses for donations. Restaurants
donated food for the 6 p.m. Survivor
Reception, where cancer survivors
ate and socialized.
Food was also provided to participants
for a “Midnight Madness” feeding.
Doherty said Starbucks on Main
Street in Islip really helped out; they
donated coffee and cups to keep the
participants caffeinated and walking.
Businesses donated goods to raffle
off; Best Buy of Bay Shore was especially
kind-hearted and donated five
iPods. Several members of Doherty’s
family battled cancer and lost and this
event is a constructive way for her to
remember her relatives. “It’s a good
cause, and it’s a lot of fun,” she said.
Andrea Duggan, a teacher in the
school district, spoke to the survivors
about her own experience with cancer,
and how she has been cancer-free for
five years. Annie Rock, a Bay Shore
resident, participated in this relay to
support a friend with breast cancer
who is undergoing chemotherapy.
The Survivor Walk, which took place
See SUNRISE CENTER on page 8
after the dinner, was “heartwarming,”
Rock said. “It just tugs on your heart.
You never realize how many people
you know that have or had cancer.”
Robert Drago, another Bay Shore
teacher, served as the event’s
emcee/deejay for the second year. The
Long Island-based 11-member band,
Tradewinds, provided musical entertainment,
played party favorites and
was also in charge of running the
sound system.
This was their second year performing
at this community’s relay and they
perform at many similar fundraising
events. “It just feel good to be a part of
it,” the band members said.
Bagpiper Bill LaPage played during
the Luminary Ceremony of Hope,
which took place at 9:30 p.m., and anyone
can purchase a luminary bag in
memory of a loved one that has passed
away.
During this ceremony, and throughout
the night, luminaria bags lined the
track and the candles inside burned
for the duration of the event to enlighten
participants of how important their
contributions are to the event and to
possibly, one day, eliminating cancer.
Bay Shore High School eleventhgraders,
Brynn Bickford and Danielle
Glynn, both had family members die of
cancer and though they had fun at the
relay, their participation was more of a
personal decision. Glynn, whose grandmother
passed away from cancer, said,
“I hope we raise a lot of money!”
With the success of the second relay
for this community, 300 participants
raised $53,298; the community hopes
this will become a long-running event
at the high school. ■
Battling an “orphan disease”
Dolan family takes on a rare skin illness
By EMILY PORTOGHESE
ISLIP TOWN — New diseases are
discovered all the time, and despite
the rarity of some diseases, they
always change the lives of those connected
to the one suffering from the
condition.
Some relatives of a person with a disease
may keep quiet and withdraw
from society, and others, such as Nancy
Blackstone, a town of Islip employee at
the town’s Division of Senior Citizens,
and her daughter Barbara Dolan, have
reacted as positively as can be imagined
when they discovered Barbara’s
daughter, Alyna, has mastocytosis, a
rare disease of the skin; they work to
get the word out about this disease.
Blackstone, who lives in Islip hamlet,
contacted the office of Islip Town
Councilman Steve Flotteron to put out
a press release about the disease.
Information on the website, Mastokids.org,
of which Dolan is the treasurer,
was also available on the release,
as it is a helpful resource for parents of
children with mastocytosis.
Mastocytosis can also affect the stomach,
intestines and bone marrow; however,
it is most often a disease of the
skin. Though the cause of mastocytosis
is unknown, doctors have found that it
is the location and number of mast
cells, which are a kind of blood cell
made by your bone marrow, that seems
to result in a reaction and the type of
mastocytosis a person has, according
to the American Academy of Family
Physicians on www.familydoctor.org.
The Mastokids.org website started
The Dolan family of Blue Point; Barbara, Alyna, William, Dariya and Nikolai, along
with maternal grandmother Nancy Blackstone (not pictured) are fighting Alyna’s
mastocytosis.
Picture courtesy of the Dolan family
with a New England mother who was
enthusiastic about communicating
with other people in her situation. This
quickly grew into a group that became
the board of directors, now, the website
operates under the second-generation
board.
Alyna, who is 2 years old, did not
start having reactions until she was 13
months old, Dolan noted. Although
Alyna seems to have a mild case and
the Dolan’s were lucky to have her
diagnosed so quickly, there are children
who must take a large amount of
medication daily. Fortunately, Alyna
does not. When a reaction crops up,
which is categorized by a flush, spots
on her body and a constant itch,
Benadryl can usually treat it.
Mastocytosis, termed an “orphan disease”
because it affects less than
200,00 people, causes different reactions
in each person. Children and
adults can have it, though children can
“outgrow” it while adults cannot.
Nearly 25 percent of cases develop
into a systemic version of the disease,
which is when other organs are affected.
Nancy Gould, a former nurse, who
now lives in New Zealand, was diagnosed
with systemic mastocytosis 10
years after her move from the United
States.
Gould’s role with the website is to
respond to e-mails generated by the
link for medical information. “I’ve
learned an immense amount from other
patients and parents, following their
disease with them for the past 12
years,” she said. Gould also maintains
communication with several mastocytosis
specialists around the world.
Dolan lives with her husband
William, their two older children
Dariya, 9, and Nickolai, 7 (who do not
suffer from mastocytosis) and Alyna in
Blue Point. Since Alyna’s diagnosis, the
Dolans have learned through trial and
error what sets off Alyna’s reactions.
Extreme temperatures and food with
red dye are two things that are sure to
start a reaction, but they may not
affect others with mastocytosis at all.
When Alyna was younger, her mother
tried different foods with her very
slowly.
Dolan noted this disease is often
overlooked. “I want to promote awareness,
and I want parents to know there
is support out there,” she said. Blackstone
plans to host a garage sale in
September in which all the proceeds
will go towards Mastokids.org. ■
Carriage House presents the
“Site Specifics ’08” exhibit
By KRYSTAL DeJESUS
EAST ISLIP — “The Site Specifics
’08” exhibit on installations and mixed
media at the Carriage House, located
at Brookwood Hall on Irish Lane, has
brought together seven artists from
various locations to display their
unique artwork through July 27.
“Every year for about 10 years, the
Carriage House has been presenting
experimental art,” said Karen Shaw,
the museum’s senior curator.
“Site Specifics ’08” is one of three
exhibits that the museum presents
every year, according to the museum
website. All of the artists are mostly
from the Brooklyn area with the
exception of one from Ohio, and were
chosen based on their previous work,
Shaw noted.
Each gallery is completely original
but the interior space is incorporated
into all of the work. The pieces were
not just displayed in a room, but
dependent upon the room they were
displayed. “The rustic interior allows
artists great freedom of design, choice
of medium and latitude in installation,”
was an explanation on the museum’s
website.
All of the pieces were very different
from each other, but two of them had
reflection as a component. The first
gallery, Yellow Paper, by Susan
Leopold, uses mirrors to reflect the
room and projected images of the 1903
mansion that houses the main office of
the museum.
“The illusion of space is achieved by
embedding photographs into sculptural
forms lined with mirrors,” said
Leopold in her statement on the piece.
We’re Not in Kansas Anymore by
Lindsay Packer used reflection in a
much different way than Leopold’s
piece. Packer used a strand of blinking
Christmas lights to reflect off small
animal figurines, which made it look
as if their shadows on the wall were
running.
Reflection was also used to create a
tornado-like movement on the wall
above the figurines. When the two
come together it appears as if the figurine
shadows on the lower portion of
the wall are running from the tornado
on the upper portion of the wall.
Artist John Monti’s Flower Power is part of the Islip Art Museum’s “The Site
Specifics ’08” exhibit.
IB/DeJesus
“There seems to be an engineering
quality to it,” said William Smith, the
museum’s assistant director.
Mia Pearlman’s Gyre used its space
in a different way by using the ceiling
to install her work. The piece, which is
a collection of cut paper installations,
spirals down from the ceiling and is
not at all symmetrical.
“I wanted to create a piece that the
viewer was invited to walk around and
would be very different from various
angles,” said Pearlman in an e-mail
message.
Pearlman used approximately onethird
of all her cut paper to create
Gyre, and it took a day and a half to
install. “Using the ceiling was very
challenging because gravity affects the
pieces in ways you might not expect,”
Pearlman added.
The exhibit also featured the work of
John Monti with his gallery Flower
Power, which is a collection of brightly
colored plastic flowers arranged in a
pattern on the walls of one room. Bill
Cravis’ Pitter Patter symbolizes the
connection between our needs and
wants and our carbon footprint.
Margie Neuhaus’ Scanning Viscera
and Sheri Willis’ Flutter Arrhythmias
were more mechanical than the other
galleries. Neuhaus used a moving light
to create an image of internal organs,
where as Willis used sound and distorted
images to create a different
atmosphere. “I find it very interesting,”
Smith said of the exhibit. ■
Based on the prospectus, the building
is slated to have a flexible tenant
floor plan for 10,000-square foot
spaces and up to 95,000-square foot
offices. The structure is expected to
feature a modern facade, a common
lobby and direct site access, tenantcontrolled
heating, a ventilation and
air conditioning (HVAC) package, high
ceilings and raided, and “exceptional
data center possibilities.”
This project is being aided by the
benefits of being in the New York State
Empire Zone, established to spark economic
growth through multiple tax
incentives created to attract new businesses
to the state and enable existing
businesses to expand and produce
more jobs. In addition, instead of paying
property taxes, payments in lieu of
taxes (the PILOT program), which are
significantly less expensive, will be
paid to the town.
“Ninety-nine percent of the credit
goes to [Joe],” said Islip Town Supervisor
Phil Nolan. “He is a guy with rare
vision, strength and focus. The names
of his clients spoke volumes.”
Contributions by Mannix also did not
go unnoticed by Nolan, who noted
Mannix’s 30-year career in town government
and said he is the one that
“finds people like Joe Farkas and puts
together the deals and incentives and
makes it happen.”
What is happening at the Sunrise
Center is more life than has been seen
in nearly 13 years. “I am very glad this
happened,” said Councilman Steve
Flotteron, who also noted that a
vacant building will be replaced by
good jobs.
The recently reestablished East Islip
Community Chamber of Commerce is
also a strong supporter of this project,
said Mike Visgauss, the organization’s
president.
Expected to be completed within the
next eight months, building architect
Sal Ferrara, president of East Meadow-based
Combined Resources, said
that though the structure is not a
“green” building, aspects of recycling
are anticipated, such as reusing the
steel and concrete in the existing
structure, while sending out other
items to be recycled for other purposes
elsewhere.
In addition, Ferrara noted that a
high-end HVAC system is slated to be
installed and is expected to save
money over the long haul. “A public/private
partnership is the engine
of growth and a formula for success,”
Farkas said. ■
The overhang business is looking up
East End Awning is in it for the long haul
By EMILY PORTOGHESE
SUFFOLK COUNTY — Born and
raised in Sayville, Bill Duffy, and his
wife, Carol, own and operate East End
Awning, a service that is considered of
high value in today’s attempt at an
energy efficient world.
Based in eastern Long Island, Duffy
installs retractable awnings in Suffolk
County as well as helping out some of
the local customers at their other
homes in New York City and Fire
Island.
Most of the awnings installed are residential,
but Bill also installs some
storefront and restaurant patio
awnings. Since 1995, this husband and
wife team started up East End
Awnings in addition to their individual
jobs as contractors.
“It’s taken on a life of its own, and
there is a need for this kind of service,
so we’ve been growing every year,”
Carol said.
Awnings can reduce air-conditioning
costs by as much as 25 percent,
according to the Professional Awning
Manufacturer’s Association. By blocking
the sun before it even hits your
window, the room will stay cooler.
Interior heat gain can be reduced by
77 percent if you have an awning
installed, according to the American
Society of Heating and Air Conditioning.
During the winter, the awning can
be retracted to let the sun heat your
home.
Customers can choose from more
than 200 solid or striped 100 percent
solution-dyed acrylic fabrics that are
specifically designed for outdoor use
by Sunesta, an awning manufacturer
that has been in business for 25 years.
These choices offer an outdoor addition
to your home décor, and can complement
your house color and patio
set. Fabrics can even be changed when
needed or desired.
Sunesta also offers customized
frame coverage. Other awnings come
pre-cut and in a limited selection of
versation concerning what is needed
to educate children.
He disagrees with the manner in
which superintendents are currently
being portrayed and spoke not only for
himself, but for his colleagues as well.
“We are willing to engage people and
tell them we like things are the way
they are,” said Chu, who noted that if
five people ask him questions, all five
would receive the same response
based on the information he has at that
time.
For the first two weeks following
June 30, he will transition with the current
interim superintendent, Carol
Eisenberg, and then be on his own by
the middle of July.
Sayville School District Superintendent
Rosemary Jones, the current
president of the county’s superintendent
association, noted that Chu is
Based in eastern Long Island, East End Awning installs retractable awnings in Suffolk County as well as homes in New
sizes, but Sunesta’s awnings have a
“smartfold” design that allow the arms
to fold over each other when the
awning is retracted.
Not only do awnings save money on
home energy costs, they also allow for
the homeowner to entertain outdoors
on a more consistent basis, no matter
the weather.
With the price of gas, thinking up fun
activities to do at home is crucial, and
being shaded and shielded from the
often brutal summer weather is something
most can benefit from.
Bill and Carol set themselves apart
from other businesses of this kind by
being extremely service oriented. Bill
installs every project, and the customers
appreciate talking to Carol
every time they call East End Awning.
They consider themselves “very
open-minded and plays a huge role
interacting with state legislators.
“Wendell is a true professional, who
has a strong background in curriculum
and instruction,” Jones said. “He will
be a wonderful addition and do a great
job there.”
Introductory, substantive meetings
with a variety of constituencies, from
bargaining units, administrative heads,
and parent and community groups are
slated to be his summer project, Chu
said.
He wants to know what businesspeople
think regarding the skills students
might possess for working, and wants
to know what parents think about
improving the schools.
Noting that promises were made by
legislators regarding funding mandates
that have not come to fruition, Chu
said, “We need people to join us in that
campaign. We will look at expenditures.
But it is not a one-sided issue.” ■
accessible” to their customers and due
to this type of service, a substantial
number of repeat customer and referrals
are generated, they said. “We are
relatable in a personal aspect,” Carol
said.
Retractable awnings block the sun
and light rain, not your view, which is
unlike blinds, drapes, sunscreens and
window films, the Duffys said.
Awnings that are retractable are more
appealing to customers because they
provide a much brighter living environment
than permanent awnings or
other permanent structures.
This product will last more than 20
years, Bill noted, and he added, “It’s
something they need and are willing to
invest in.” The couple emphasized they
would like to keep the business growing.
“We’re in it for the long-haul,” they
said. ■
as GSBAS’ monthly meeting and was
Contrary to popular belief, wolves
are not “people-hungry scavengers.”
They would rather not have anything
to do with people, unlike their close
West Islip High School senior Lauren Spagnoletta has signed a letter of intent
with C.W. Post College to play women’s lacrosse. Spagnoletta was captain of
the West Islip girls’ varsity lacrosse team that captured the League I championship
She is a member of the National Honor Society and the Foreign Language
Wolfing down some
education
WOLF from preceding page
first time in history that we ran out of
food,” he said.
In 2005, GSBAS and SEA organized a
visit from Atka. Since the visit was well
received, the two organizations decided
to host another wolf event. More
than 200 people attended and gathered
on blankets and lawn chairs to view
the wolf during this year’s visit.
The WCC was founded in 1999 and is
a private, not-for-profit organization
that houses 31 wolves, including 25
Mexican Gray wolves, and a few very
rare Red wolves are in captivity at the
WCC.
Those Mexican Gray and Red wolves
are not on exhibit for conservation
center visitors to see, as the staff
hopes to release them from captivity
back into the wild one day, and human
interaction would ruin that goal.
A pack of four wolves, called the
“Ambassadors,” are the only ones on
exhibit and will never be released into
the wild. The role of this ambassador
pack is to help educate people about
these wolves’ wild brothers and sisters.
Atka is the only wolf of this pack
that travels with Howell and other
WCC personnel to schools, nature
centers and other events to educate
interested groups about the history of
wolves, the importance of wolves in
an ecosystem, and the efforts to save
this special animal.
The Ambassadors are: Apache, a 10-
year-old mixed Arctic and British
Columbian wolf and the alpha male of
the pack; Atka; Lukas, a 9-year-old
British Columbian wolf; and Kaila,
also a British Columbian wolf. At 12
years of age, Kaila is the oldest one of
the pack.
Wolves have been “de-listed” from
the endangered species list, but are in
danger of extinction, as some states
have relaxed their laws on the hunting
of wolves.
Anthony Nicolasi, an avid hunter
who was present at the event, loves
wolves. He told Howell at this meeting
that Montana and Wyoming were listed
as good places to hunt wolves
according to his hunting magazine.
“I’m concerned about wolves, they’re
my favorite animal,” Nicolasi said.
Merryman, who has traveled to Yellowstone
State Park, the Carolinas,
and Alaska, has never encountered a
wolf in those places, although there
are sure to be wolves there. This
shows wolves’ shyness and aversion to
humans. Howell called them “shy” and
“elusive” creatures.
Wolves can eat as much as 20 to 25
pounds of food in one meal, as only
one out of every six hunts is successful.
At 2 to 3 years of age, wolves leave
their pack to start their own. Howell
hopes Atka will be able to assist the
WCC in wolf education for many years
to come. ■
Silence is
not golden
Many in the journalism and communication
fields shuddered with the news
last Thursday that Suffolk Life decided to
close its notebooks, turn off its computers,
and shutdown its presses this week.
Agree or disagree with Dave Willmott
Sr.’s editorials and opinions, his was a
unique voice on the Suffolk County landscape.
The publication and its varying
editions was our only competition on a
weekly news scale and was one of the
reasons we worked hard to ensure we
covered Islip Town and our communities.
That is not to say that the Islip Bulletin
is not going to maintain its high standards,
but it becomes a bit more difficult to have
diverse voices and seek the truth when
one of your colleagues goes belly-up.
In this day and age, when there are multiple
so-called news sites on the Internet,
there are some that follow the accepted
standards of journalism and some that do
not, and having a nearly 50-year-old
newspaper disappear is not what we
wanted to hear.
In this case silence is not golden, but has
turned the journalistic streets to lead. ■
Commencement
is just the start
This weekend, our coverage area will
feature four high school graduation ceremonies,
where a few thousand students
will progress into their futures with plans
for college, vocational schools and the
military.
It is a time of life when these young people
begin to sort out their lives and
attempt to find a direction that will hopefully
lead them to a productive, happy life.
Though it is the end of one portion of
their lives, it is the beginning of another
journey and it should be said to these
young people that it is just the start of a
long life that will have many highs and
lows.
Those highs need to be celebrated and
enjoyed to the utmost, as the lows certainly
seem to last longer and at times
can really twist one’s life upside down.
But it is not necessary to worry all the
time.
What is necessary is taking care of one’s
self to help others in family or work to
help each other. High school commencement
should be the beginning of a beautiful
life. ■
Reflections of the Past
In the fall of 1970, national emblems and certificates of accomplishment, signed by President Nixon,
were awarded to the above seventh and eighth grade Bay Shore Middle School students who excelled
in the rugged physical fitness tests given at the school. Pictured with their physical education teacher,
To the Editor:
On June 17, 2008, I had the honor to be invited to
the executive office of Governor David Paterson with
20 advocates from Long Island that support the proposed
property tax cap in New York State at 4 percent.
Seventy-four percent of those surveyed by the
Siena Research Institute poll favored a state property
tax cap and back Gov. Paterson’s bill. The governor
was concerned about non-elected officials stating
Tom Suozzi’s Commission of the Tax Cap was
dead on arrival prior to fair and due process in the
legislation.
This type of behavior will not be tolerated in Gov.
Paterson’s administration. The governor had the
opposition of the tax cap in on Monday, the day
before the meeting and asked them: If you disagree
(with the cap), then what is your solution to lowering
property taxes in the state?
This is the democratic process and everywhere he
Letters to the editor must be signed and include a daytime
goes in the state, since becoming the governor, it’s
the first concern of the people of New York.
Leaders engage in ideas and conversation with people.
Those who are not leaders want to control everybody,
denying thought, denying reason, Gov. Paterson
said.
No one had an alternative solution and the day we
were there he placed an empty chair in front of the
podium and was still waiting to here an alternative
solution to lowering taxes from anyone in New York.
He is willing to listen.
Fred Gorman, a businessman from Nesconset, told
the governor that people are voting, but it’s with their
feet; they are leaving New York because they can’t
afford to live here anymore.
We didn’t have kids to have them live in another
state. Massachusetts recently went from one of the
highest to one of the lowest property taxed states in
the nation when this issue was addressed and
changed in their state.
Islip Bulletin - June 26, 2008
Don’t get burned while grilling
Put safety first during barbecue season
Fire safety is an essential ingredient in any recipe that
calls for cooking on an outdoor grill. In 2005, fire
departments responded to an estimated 8,300 home
fires involving grills, hibachis or barbecues, according
to a National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)
report. These fires caused $137 million in direct property
damage.
“The last thing anyone wants to do when grilling is to
create a situation that ends with a home or something
else on the property catching fire,” said Lorraine Carli,
NFPA’s vice president of communications. “Taking
steps to keep grills a safe distance away from kids,
pets, and things that can burn like branches, deck railings,
and overhangs will help prevent home fires and
injuries caused by grills.”
Six out of seven home grill fires involved a gas grill
and the leading contributing factor was a leak or break
in hoses or other equipment. The leading factor in charcoal
grill fires was something that could burn was too
close to the grill.
For general grilling safety tips, audio clips, statistical
information, and a slide show on how to prepare your
gas grill for grilling, visit http://www.nfpa.org/grilling.
NFPA offers the following safety tips:
• Gas and charcoal BBQ grills must only be used outdoors.
If used indoors, or in any enclosed spaces,
such as tents, they pose both a fire hazard and the
risk of exposing occupants to toxic gases and potential
asphyxiation.
• Position the grill well away from siding, deck railings
and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
Place the grill a safe distance from lawn games, play
areas and foot traffic.
• Keep children and pets away from the grill area:
declare a three-foot “kid-free zone” around the grill.
Put out several long-handled grilling tools to give the
chef plenty of clearance from heat and flames when
flipping burgers.
• Periodically remove grease or fat buildup in trays
below the grill so a hot grill cannot ignite it.
• For charcoal grills, purchase the proper starter fluid
and store the can out of reach of children, and away
from heat sources. Never add charcoal starter fluid
Americans enjoy more than three billion barbecues each year. But barbecuing can be dangerous, even deadly,
if you are not careful.
when coals or kindling have already been ignited, and
never use any flammable or combustible liquid other
than charcoal starter fluid to get the fire going.
• When using gas grills, check the gas cylinder hose for
leaks before using it for the first time each year. A
light soap and water solution applied to the hose will
reveal escaping propane by releasing bubbles.
• If you determine your grill has a gas leak, by smell
or the soapy bubble test, and there is no flame:
Turn off the gas tank and grill. If the leak stops,
get the grill serviced by a professional before
using it again. If the leak does not stop, call the
fire department.
• If you smell gas while cooking, immediately get away
from the grill and call the fire department. Do not
attempt to move the grill. Use only equipment bearing
the mark of an independent testing laboratory.
• Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on how to set
up the grill and maintain it. Never store propane gas
cylinders in buildings or garages. If you store a gas
ISLIP BULLETIN, P.O. BOX 367, SAYVILLE, NEW YORK 11782
Dowling receives $100K state grant
College to implement paid student internships
Dowling College has been recognized
by the New York State Department
of Labor’s Workforce Development
and Training Divisions and was
awarded a grant for the Development
and Brokering of Student Paid Internship
Opportunities for students.
This opportunity could not have
come at a better time for the college.
Since the installment of former County
Executive Robert Gaffney as president
of the school on Idle Hour Boulevard
in Oakdale, multiple changes have
occurred to strengthen the college’s
reputation, not only in the region, but
also in the nation.
One of the most prominent and
pressing issues facing the state and
Long Island is the growing “brain
drain.” Many of New York’s talented
young professionals are finding it too
difficult and costly to live here and are
deciding to move elsewhere.
New Yorkers can no longer afford to
allow these problems to keep occurring.
To help alleviate this growing
problem, Dowling College will apply
this grant to help stimulate the Career
Services Center.
One of the most prominent changes
taking place at the college is Gaffney’s
effort to find ways to enrich student’s
experiences in the classrooms and outside
the classrooms as well.
Current marketing research done by
the college has shown that students at
Dowling want to continue to have firstclass
professors in their classrooms,
and would also like opportunities to
work for companies that are located
across Long Island and the state.
Many of Dowling’s students have
hopes of living and working on Long
Island and in New York State after
graduating. Dowling College sees this
grant opportunity as one that the college
can contribute greatly to by helping
New York’s young professionals
remain on Long Island and in New
York. Together with the state of New
York, Dowling College can use its
regional networks, young and motivated
students and dedicated staff to
solve New York State’s “retention”
problem.
Dowling College has a current structure
in place that enables students to
seek job opportunities and internships.
Located on campus is a Career
Services Center staffed by two individuals
who are responsible for ensuring
the availability of internships as well
as an array of other responsibilities
that include writing resumes, providing
information workshops for students
and parents, academic advising
duties and many other tasks as well.
This grant will afford the center the
resources to support the staff to fully
serve the students’ needs. ■
Islip Bulletin - June 26, 2008
Winning by a shoe
WINNING from page 24
led Islip to the Class III Long Island
Championship, was delighted to be
around other coaches such as Farmingdale’s
Buddy Krumenacker,
Lawrence’s Lou Andre, Rich Reichert
from St. Anthony’s, and William
Floyd’s Paul Longo, who served as
head coach for Long Island.
“This is great,” Lynch said. “You learn
so much from the other coaches, some
legends here.”
East Islip’s Class II Long Island
Championship team had Dennis Drywa
(6 tackles), Tim Moller (3 tackles),
Alec Blieberg (1-catch, 6 yards), and
lineman Larry Cohen. West Islip had
Alex Fernan (4 tackles), and Islip had
Edgar Cesar (4 tackles) and Malcolm
(1 tackle, half-sack).
For a while it appeared that Long
Island would win this game off the foot
of Floyd’s Jonathan Korn, who nailed a
pair of field goals, a 40 yard one to end
the first half and a 33-yarder to begin
the second.
Led by the players from a team that
does not lose, the Long Island squad
moved like a machine to grab a 7-0
lead within the first five minutes of the
contest as Floyd’s Joe Sidaras connected
with Newfield’s Trevor Perryman
for a 19-yard scoring strike at 9:53
in the initial period.
But the City squad fired right back
with a 12-play, 64-yard drive that culminated
with Legree hitting running
back Shaahiyn Alston off a scramble
for a 3-yard touchdown pass with 3:23
remaining in the first quarter.
On their third possession, Long
Island took back the lead as Sidaras
threw his second TD pass on a roll out
to Lawrence’s Conrad Stewart with
7:57 left in the half. The highlight of the
brief drive was a gimmick play that
had Sidaras lateral to Lawrence’s P.J.
Preziosa, who then tossed a 31-yard
pass to St. Anthony’s Jack Kensil to the
3-yard line.
Akin to the Grand Central/Times
Square Shuttle, the City team came right
back with a TD that knotted the game at
14 with 50 seconds to go in the half as
Legree first went seven yards on a keeper,
and then barreled in from the one.
The City team moved the ball with
the efficiency of a subway line,
advancing one stop at a time on consistent
runs by Legree and a 10-yard
pass from the QB to Khalif Staten that
moved the ball to the 7 yard line.
The game is slated to be televised on
the Madison Square Garden Network
on Saturday, June 28 at 7 p.m. and on
Sunday, June 29 at 1 p.m. Play-by-play
action is called by Kenny Albert, with
color analysis from Marty Lyons and
Mike Quick. ■
Physical activity and fun. Who would
have thought that they could go so
well together? The physical education
teachers at Mary G. Clarkson, the staff,
parents and second graders participated
in competitions of challenging feats
of physical ability and endurance in
March.
Everyone in attendance took part in
one form or another. The contestants
were divided into teams: staff vs. parents
vs. children, and the audience
participated by cheering on the contestants.
All of the activities were cleverly
designed to be rousing, gripping,
refreshingly invigorating, and heart
healthy for the participants as well as
entertaining for the audience. Of
course, all of the teams experienced
their share of wins and losses, but in
the end, it was the children who won
the day. ■
