Henri Castelain 48th Operation Support Squadron Commander Nearly 40 years ago Bob Dylan published a song about changing times. As summer draws near and RAF Lakenheath enters the permanent change of station season we can all expect some changing times. It is also a time for us to better prepare ourselves, our coworkers and our families for this busy and stressful period. Theoretically, the base undergoes a 33 percent change annually, as many of us are on three-year tours. Summer is the preferred period for moves because children are out of school and returns to the states can be blended with family vacations. As leaders and supervisors it is critical we prepare for the departure of experience that will leave our units in the coming months. Help your departing personnel by ensuring they leave behind a useful legacy to ensure a smooth transition with their replacement. Work with your folks to verify continuity books are brought up to speed. Until recently, the wing was scheduled for a unit compliance inspection this summer-keep that momentum moving. Good work was done in preparation for this inspection, so take advantage of this groundwork and keep it going. What better way to greet new arrivals than provide them with a workstation with all the current tools and information to make their transition easy and fruitful. Productivity will be maximized from day one. At the same time, how can we ensure a successful exit for our faithful employees leaving RAF Lakenheath? Start preparations early on all performance reports. If you are a rater and know you are leaving, then you may be swamped with a multitude of performance reports that close out all in a very short period of time. Get an early start to ensure adequate time to accomplish the reports thoroughly. These documents are critical in capturing our workforce’s efforts and ensuring our people get rewarded for the hard work they do here. Remember, promotions are based, in part, on data captured in performance reports. Performance reports are also the basis for decorations awarded to superior performers who are PCSing. Getting both completed in a timely fashion ensures all personnel are recognized and paperwork is cleared on time. Ideally, decorations will process in time for our personnel to receive the recognition here at RAF Lakenheath where they earned their accolades. Another sure indicator of a busy and hectic summer is our imminent Air Expeditionary Force requirements for the Liberty Wing. Two of the wing’s fighter squadrons, along with their associated maintenance squadrons, are tasked for AEF 3 and 4. Those units are stateside right now for 30 days of training and spin up and will train hard throughout the summer to be fully combat capable before their departure for the AEF. As a wing, we can anticipate that, prior to the next AEF, we will lose personnel with a wealth of experience who supported previous deployments. Rest assured, new personnel will need additional time and support to get ready for an AEF deployment. This work load, in the midst of the PCS season, will task all of our units here, making it even more critical to prepare now and work smarter. We are faced with changing times in the next few months and preparation will ensure those times are smooth, not turbulent.
