Tyco SP’s Kantech Releases
EntraPass v5.01
New features include multi-swipe functionality, integration
with American Dynamics VideoEdge NVR
Kantech, part of Tyco Security Products, has announced the
release of EntraPass v5.01 security software, which has
been designed to help customers keep up with their
changing access control security needs whether they are
managing one building or multiple sites from a network.
New features of EntraPass include multi-swipe functionality
when using the KT-400 four-reader controller. Authorised
cardholders can perform multiple functions through either
a double or triple swipe of their card, all without having to
access the EntraPass security software. The functions
include: activating relays, locking/unlocking doors,
arming/disarming the alarm panel and more.
“Providing multi-swipe functionality is an important
enhancement available with EntraPass v5.01 and it’s a
capability that customers are actively looking for as part of
their access control solution,” said Scott McNulty, Product
Manager. “This capability provides greater flexibility and
options to help users better manage everyday security
tasks.”
EntraPass v5.01 now integrates with American Dynamic’s
VideoEdge NVR and allows users to view, manage and
control video being recorded on the NVR through EntraPass
software. With EntraPass v5.01 users can now connect to an
unlimited number of video servers through a new feature
called EntraPass InfiniView.
In addition, EntraPass v5.01 provides a gateway to hattrix
and the option to provide customers with a full spectrum of
security services – from hosted to managed.
EntraPass is a robust suite of high performance software
that allows customers to design and operate any number of
doors where card access is required. IP

Vemotion provides low
bandwidth video support
for monitoring cameras at
outlying locations
Vemotion is
working with
Shropshire
Council, the
unitary authority for the county of Shropshire, to provide a
solution for cost effectively monitoring outlying CCTV
cameras.
Shropshire has extended the capabilities of its existing
CCTV network by deploying low bandwidth video
transmission capabilities as a viable and cost effective
means of monitoring the cameras installed at outlying
locations from its 24/7 Monitoring Centre where the
cameras throughout the county town of Shrewsbury are
already monitored by a full time team of operators.
The Shropshire Monitoring Centre is part of a larger family
involving the Council’s Civil Enforcement Parking Officers,
CCTV Public Space Surveillance, Out of Hours Customer
Service Staff, Bylaw Inspector, Dog Wardens, Car Park and
Cash Collection team and supporting Street Scene
Managers, in dealing with environmental crimes.
“Within Shrewsbury, most cameras are connected to our
own fibre network but the cost of fibre connections from
outlying positions would have been prohibitive,” explained
Dave Roberts, Environmental Enforcement Manager whose
responsibilities include the Shropshire CCTV network.
“Vemotion has provided us with an effective, low cost
solution backed by superb service,” added Dave.
Shropshire Council installed the Vemotion multi-channel
video encoder at the Whitchurch Police Station. This
enabled live video feeds from all CCTV cameras in the
Whitchurch area to be streamed across to the Monitoring
Centre via a low bandwidth broadband connection. Up to
16 cameras can be monitored simultaneously. The
encoder automatically optimises each feed to provide the
best resolution depending on the number of cameras
being viewed at any one time and the available network
bandwidth. For instance, when an operator picks up an
item of interest, they can select the relevant camera feed
and view the live video utilising the full network bandwidth
in order to maximise image clarity.
Staff at the Monitoring Centre were impressed with the
ease and speed of deployment and felt it an easy solution
to roll out to its outlying locations. The flexibility of
bandwidth used and ability to focus on a particular camera
and increase picture resolution is an important additional
capability that makes the system user friendly and fit-forpurpose
while saving money on network bandwidth. IP

EMEA sales and support team with
the appointment of Julian Inman.
Beginning immediately, Julian will
serve as EMEA Sales and Technical
Support Engineer. In addition to providing engineering and
field support to the growing international demand for
exacqVision video management system solutions, he will
also allow the company to expand its technical support
reach in the region by supplementing the efforts of the
corporate offices in the United States.
Julian is an Electrical and Electronics Engineer with more
than 25 years experience in the CCTV industry. This new
role will allow Exacq customers to benefit from Julian’s
considerable knowledge of public space surveillance,
banking and retail systems together with chemical,
industrial and educational customer requirements.
Julian previously held a senior position with a leading
CCTV manufacturer based in the United Kingdom, where
he served as Group Training Manager, being responsible
for product and technology training on local and network
video recording and redisplay systems using both
analogue and IP technology.
Alan Lefford, EMEA Sales Manager for Exacq Technologies
said, “Having Julian on board will provide customers with
experienced systems design and bid support with EMEA
focused training and technical assistance. We are very

Optex Investment in Raytec
Leading sensor manufacturer Optex Co. Ltd of
Japan has announced a major investment in the
100% share capital of UK lighting manufacturer
Raytec. Raytec are the global leaders in security
lighting with a reputation for high performance,
high quality products designed, manufactured and
supported to the highest standards. This new
partnership allows the two companies to capitalise
on many common synergies in sales and
technology bringing both sensor and lighting
technologies together.
Raytec’s three founding directors, Shaun Cutler,
David Lambert and Tony Whiting remain on board
and are committed to achieving Raytec’s long term
goals. Shaun Cutler says “The investment by Optex
is exciting and very much welcomed by everyone at
Raytec. We will continue to operate independently
from our UK facility, however we now have access
to more resources to better serve our customers
and alliance partners across the globe”. Shaun

Canon helps ensure a high level of
security for Rome’s Colosseum
As one of the most impressive surviving buildings of
the Roman Empire, the Colosseum is also one of the
most visited archaeological sites in the world. While
the vast majority of tourists, who flock to the site
every year, are happy to simply experience one of the
wonders of ancient Rome, a few either want to take a
piece home with them or to leave their own mark on
the monument.
A high level of security is vital to ensure the
preservation of the amphitheatre, and is therefore a
key issue for the Soprintendenza Archeologica of
Rome, the local government department responsible
for architectural conservation.
Until a few years ago, the Colosseum relied on an
analogue security system comprising a multitude of
fixed cameras providing low-resolution images, which
limited the ability of the security staff to accurately
monitor the amphitheatre. The quality of the videos
was poor and it was often difficult to identify and
reconstruct recorded events. Soprintendenza
Archeologica of Rome therefore embarked on a
challenging project to replace the Colosseum's
analogue surveillance infrastructure with an expanded
and upgraded CCTV system, integrated into an IP
transmission network.
While investigating potential new systems, Piero
Meogrossi, Technical Director responsible for the
Colosseum at Soprintendenza Archeologica of Rome,
was impressed by Canon's network video solutions,
which offered all of the increased security features
required and contacted SN Tecnica, a local systems
integrator and Canon partner with vast experience in
CCTV installations.
SN Tecnica undertook a thorough analysis of the
Colosseum's needs and recommended a tailored
solution to enhance the security of the site. Sergio
Nitti, General Manager at SN Tecnica, comments:
"Security was not only limited by the presence of
outdated and underperforming analogue cameras, but
also by the difficulty in placing cabling in the
amphitheatre. The Soprintendenza Archeologica of
Rome is extremely cautious about allowing any
intervention in the Colosseum and there are strict
limitations to work in the area in order to preserve it. It
was clear that the fewer cameras we installed, the
lower the risk would be of potential damage to the
monument."
The Canon video surveillance solution proposed
consisted of several pan tilt zoom network cameras
with a 26x optical zoom, which were connected to the
existing CCTV equipment. Meogrossi explains: "For us, it
was crucial to find a solution that could be easily
integrated into our existing CCTV system. Canon's
solution was the perfect fit. Not only was the image
quality and performance of Canon's network cameras
outstanding, but we were even more impressed by
their seamless integration into our current IP network."
SN Tecnica created unobtrusive thermal housings to
protect both the Canon cameras and other electrical
equipment from unfavourable weather conditions. The
systems integrator also implemented an encrypted Wi-
Fi bridge connection to enable remote data
transmission through the two security observatories in
the Colosseum.

The local control room was linked remotely to the main
control room, which SN Tecnica equipped with a high
capacity storage server running a customised version
of Canon's software translated into Italian. This was an
important requirement for the Colosseum, which was
eager to adopt an Italian language platform to set up a
simple and easy-to- understand working environment
for the Italian security team.
Nitti explains: "We developed a bespoke solution to
meet the specific needs of the Colosseum. Compared
to the previous infrastructure of fixed, analogue
cameras, the Canon VB network cameras allow
improved coverage with fewer devices. The cameras'
compact bodies make them unobtrusive and their PTZ
(Pan/Tilt/Zoom) functionality has significantly extended
the Colosseum's surveillance capability."
The PTZ feature makes it very easy to adjust the
viewing angle, and expanding coverage to a full 360º
horizontal field of view. Images remain clear and blurfree
during PTZ movement. Furthermore, when some
motion is detected, the camera can be set to ‘pan and
tilt' to follow the subject's movement. Nitti emphasises
the exceptional low-light performance guaranteed by
the Canon video surveillance solution: "Canon's bright
lenses, combined with high sensitivity image sensors
and Canon's Digicnet network engine, provide clear
visibility of subjects and surroundings even in low-light
conditions. This has turned into a significant asset for
the Colosseum's security team, which can easily detect
any suspicious movement in every part of the site." A
multimedia platform called ‘Colosseumweb' has also
been set up to promote the cultural and artistic value
of the amphitheatre.
In the next few years, this project could benefit from
the Canon network cameras installed at the Colosseum.
Meogrossi explains: "Since 2003, we have been
discussing the need to extend the renovation process
of the Colosseum by pursuing additional technical and
structural improvements together with tourism
initiatives. Through additional Canon network cameras
accessible through into the Colosseumweb platform, it
would then be possible to have immediate access to a
virtual tour of the building, remotely exploring the area
as if it was a live visit." It is clear from what he says
that the benefits of the installed Canon surveillance
solution are much greater than originally expected.
Meogrossi is able to rest assured that the architectural
jewel in the crown of ancient Rome is being constantly
watched by the most up-to-date digital surveillance
system.

Following the success of the IP UserGroup operations
in the UK, USA and Latin America and in view of the
comments made by Memoori concerning the
opportunities in the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India
and China) the IP UserGroup is now looking East.

Middle East and on to
India over the coming
months. As you will
be aware the
organisation is
already very strong in
Latin America with a
hub based in Quito Ecuador and has strong ties in
Brazil with an IP-in-Action LIVE event scheduled for
November in Sao Paulo.
We also have strong relationships with Russia via our
media partners Groteck and the ALL-over-IP event in
Moscow in the past.
India and the Middle East
Over the past months the IP UserGroup has been
looking very carefully at these regions and it is clear
that although there is considerable scope for the
deployment of IP Networked Security and Surveillance
technologies there is still a considerable need to
educate the Physical Security maket and the end-user
customers as to the benefits of such technologies -
Where have we heard this before?
Although we are investigating the opportunities in the
Middle East seeking partners in the six major countries
of Abu Dabi, Bahrain, Dubai, Quatar, Saudi Arabia and the
UAE, we are concentrating on India as our top priority.
Why IP UserGroup India?
A recent SIA India Security Market Report concludes
that the Indian Market for electronic security
technology is huge and revealed considerable
opportunities for investment and expansion. The
market size and growth rate are important indicators
of the development and sustainability of an emerging
market. The size of the Indian electronic physical
security market was $256 million in 2007 and with the
recent growth of some 30% year on year is projected
to exceed $750 million in 2012. This being led by a rapid
growth in CCTV, the largest product segment.

Physical Security Industry Delivered A
Stellar Performance in 2011 - Can It
Continue to Defy Gravity in 2012?
Physical security business in 2012 will look to emerging
markets, new technologies and M&A activity. In the last
two years, the physical security industry has given nothing
short of a stellar performance. While it will continue to
defy gravity in 2012, its performance will decline in some
important measures.
Future Growth From Bric Countries
The aftershock from the 2008 financial meltdown resulted
in sovereign debt problems in Europe that are now
receiving corrective actions. These will dampen future
demand for physical security equipment right across
Europe, particularly in the public sector.
However, the industry was faced with an even more dire
economic situation in 2008, but innovative companies did
not cut R&D. Instead, they applied new technologies and
developed more attractive products for clients. The
industry is stronger and we are optimistic that demand will
edge forward at a CAGR of 3.7 percent over the next five
years. This will depend upon the emerging markets,
particularly China and Asia, delivering higher growth rates.
Penetration of physical security systems in China and Asia
is more than one order of magnitude smaller, while
economic growth is at least three times faster than the
developed economies of North America and Europe. The
BRIC countries - Brazil, India Russia and China - will play a
major role in keeping demand growing and increase their
market share.
New Technologies
Five emerging technologies have created new business
opportunities. They are wireless communicat ions , IP
networking technology, video surveillance as a service
(VSaaS), managed video, analytics software and security
management software, including physical security
information management (PSIM) and physical identity and
access management (PIAM). The opportunity for these
technologies to create new business opportunities is
enormous, led by IP networking technology. There is a
good number of medium-sized companies, particularly in
video, that have developed cutting-edge products and
gained market share.
Consolidation And Organic Growth
M&A activity has grown at a compound annual rate of 12.5
percent over the last 10 years. During this time it has
peaked and declined twice, doubling value during the last
three years to reach its historic peak in 2011 of US$9.847
billion. We forecast the value of deals will decline by 2.5
percent in 2012, despite the fact that the security market
will grow by a similar amount, thanks to buoyant markets
in the BRIC countries.
In the last three years, the volume of deals has only
increased by 7 percent but the value has more than
doubled, thanks to a few large deals worth more than $1
billion combined. The two trends in the exit valuation
figures is that software and biometric suppliers, together
with alarm monitoring companies, have achieved the
highest valuations in 2011.
The Majors Review Future Strategies
The major multinational leaders have used merger and
acquisition as an important part of growing their business.
It is therefore
surprising that they
have almost
abandoned this
policy in the last two
years. There are a
number of reasons
why, but current exit
valuations is not one
of them, because
they are still well
below 2006-07 levels.
Most have positioned themselves toward the systems
business. This has not required major investment and
feeds off their heritage estate business, integrating from
other parts of their organization such as fire detection,
evacuation, mass notification and energy management. We
expect them to extend their interest in PSIM and PIAM
software to deliver system differentiation in the
integration business. One potential market is outsourcing
security services, as a result of reduced budgets in the
public sector. Through PSIM, PIAM and MVaaS, they would
have the ultimate service to offer, with little competition
from the smart innovative product manufacturers.
Investment Business And Security
At the start of 2011, the investment business expected to
return to normal. By September, confidence had drained. If
the current volatility in world stock markets is short-lived,
then the backlog of IPOs will go ahead. A repeat of 2008
when the IPO window closed down completely would have
serious consequences for the venture capital industry and
their recipients in security. In the first eight months of 2011,
only seven announcements of capital injections were made
in security, amounting to $85 million. Most of these
involved investment in US companies by US venture
capitalists.
Financing is available but there are plenty of high-tech
businesses chasing it. In the present climate, it is unlikely
the security industry will receive more than it did in the
last two years. However, established companies
renegotiated debt financing in 2010. This continued in the
first seven months of 2011, with five lines of credit
negotiated for $1.4 billion. All have been secured by alarm
and home automation installation and monitoring
companies in the U.S. Two confirmed the funds will be used
for acquisition purposes. Goldman Sachs Specialty Lending
Group made a $565 million line of credit to APX Alarm, now
renamed Vivint.
Few venture capital companies specialize in physical
security, as it is not the most attractive technology sector.
However there are segments that are particularly
attractive: information security, identity and security
solutions, and analytical software.
Despite economic problems, the market will continue to
grow in 2012. Growth will depend on geographic regions
and IP networking. Financing will become harder to obtain,
causing hardships to small- and medium-sized companies
unable to deliver ROI that clients demand.

ExacqVision Case Study -
Berklee College of Music
Berklee College of Music was founded on the
revolutionary principle that the best way to
prepare students for careers in music is through
the study and practice of contemporary music. For
more than half a century, the college has evolved
to reflect the state-of the-art of music and the
music business. With more than a dozen
performance and nonperformance majors, a
diverse and talented student body representing
more than 70 countries, and a music industry
“who’s who” of alumni, Berklee is the world’s
premier learning lab for the music of today—and
tomorrow.
There is nothing typical about Berklee, which
presents many challenges with regards to physical
security. The student body of nearly 4,200 is served
by approximately 1,000 faculty and staff members.
The campus is made up of 30 different buildings
spread across multiple city blocks in downtown
Boston.
“Some of our buildings are over 100 years old,”
notes Roy Murphy CPP, Director of Public Safety for
Berklee. “They’re used to house students,
classrooms, music studios, performance venues,
editing facilities and more. People associated with
the school are moving about the campus regularly
throughout the entire day. Our situation is unique in
that we also serve as a landlords to many retail
tenants who occupy the lower levels of some of our
buildings.”
Berklee’s Public Safety Department operates 24
hours a day, 7 days a week to protect all of these
assets. When they decided to upgrade the video
surveillance and overall physical security needs of
the students, faculty, guests and their properties,
they turned to Joe Gillis and Nick Sink of GS
Security, a leading security integrator in New
England for the right solution. This led to the
investigation and eventual purchase of the
exacqVision Video Management System (VMS)
software and servers.
Berklee’s old system was made up of 16 legacy DVR
systems with nearly 200 cameras. The DVR’s were
not centrally located and only 30 of the cameras
were able to be brought into a make-shift control
center located underneath a stairwell in the 150
Massachusetts Avenue building. There was no cost
efficient matrix solution available to them with
these DVRs because of the wiring challenges of a
vast campus made up of many old buildings spread
out across Boston.
The new solution at Berklee School of Music consists
of a mix of five out-of the-box A-Series exacqVision
hybrid and IP camera servers as well as three
commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) servers running
the exacqVision VMS software. This system of
servers, along with the network and analog cameras
connected to them, is entirely scalable and
completely accessible from a single instance of the
freely distributed exacqVision client software
running on a Windows, Linux or Macintosh computer.
The entire system is also accessible with the free
exacq Mobile app for iPhone, iPad and Android
devices.
The three exacqVision hybrid servers are each
capable of connecting to 32 analog cameras and up
to 64 IP cameras. They are all equipped with 12 TB
of storage and RAID-5 to protect against disk
failure. The two exacqVision IP camera servers are
also capable of connecting to up to 64 IP cameras
and feature 16 TB of storage with RAID-5.
Berklee planned to replace most of their 200 analog
cameras with IP cameras. However, in cases where
there were wiring challenges they elected to use the
existing analog cameras by connecting them directly
to the exacqVision hybrid servers.
Mini dome cameras from Axis Communications
cover most of the interior areas while outdoor-rated,
vandal-proof Panasonic domes and PTZ cameras are
used outside.
Video from all of the servers is integrated with
Berklee’s Lenel access control software and
hardware. Alarm incidents from the access control
system can push corresponding video to the control
center or to anyone with access to the system.
The five exacqVision servers and three COTS servers
running the exacqVision VMS replaced the 16 legacy
DVRs and provided a central monitoring location
through the use of the exacqVision client software.
Their client system connects to six 46-inch LED
monitors in a control center that can view all of
their 300 cameras from all of their servers
simultaneously.
One area of concern on this urban campus has been
the fire escapes. There have been several cases
where people have been on the exterior fire
escapes without proper cause. This creates an
unnecessary risk that needs to be monitored and
prevented by the Berklee Public Safety Department.
Beam detectors have been installed on all of the fire
escapes that are linked to exterior IP cameras.
Anytime these alarms are triggered live video from
one of the 18 corresponding cameras is sent to the
control center to be monitored. This system was
recently tested when someone attempted to climb
up one of the fire escapes. Video of the incident
was used to capture a clear image of the suspect
which was distributed to Boston area authorities.
Given the fact that Berklee is a highly creative
environment, it’s not surprising to find many Apple
Computer products on campus. In fact, Macintosh is
the standard platform of the school and Macintosh
computers are issued to students and faculty. “The
fact that the exacqVision client is freely available on
Macintosh computers, as well as Windows and Linux,
was another huge selling point for us,” notes Nick
Costa, Systems Manager with Berklee . “In addition
to using the client on a Mac, many of our faculty
members and even students use the free exacq
Mobile app on their iPhones, iPads and even
Android devices.”
“Our exacqVision VMS software platform cost less
than having an analog matrix solution,” adds Costa.
“The client allows us to connect to all of our
servers from a single user interface and gives us
the flexibility to set it up the way that works best
for us.”

Dragging Video Surveillance
Into the Digital Age
As with other virtualized services, a hosted video
surveillance platform allows users to leverage the power
and cost-effectiveness of cloud services by eliminating
the need for on-site storage and maintenance. This helps
business owners reduce both the capital investment and
total overall cost of ownership.
Fans of "Law and Order," "CSI" and other popular crime
shows have seen their fair share of video surveillance
tricks -- but have you ever stopped to compare Hollywood
surveillance footage to what you see on the 11 o'clock
news? In the real world, still images or video from bank or
convenient store robberies are often grainy with greenish
hues -- terrible image quality for anyone looking for
forensic evidence or identification.
In a world where HDTVs, Blu-ray and 3D IMAX features
dominate the entertainment landscape, how can video
from surveillance cameras be so poor? It's because,
surprisingly, 80 percent of surveillance installations today
are still based on coax analog technology. Physical
security is one of the last industries to enter the digital
age -- especially in small stores, banks and gas stations,
which dominate the install base.
The reason?
IP-based surveillance systems -- even though they provide
much better image quality, flexibility and functionality --
aren't often a cost-effective alternative to analog for an
outfit that needs just a few cameras to protect its
property. But thanks to virtualization and the benefits of
managed services, those who want the benefits of IP
video surveillance can do so through a hosted video
partnership.
Following are five reasons cloud-services are changing
the surveillance industry.
1. Hosted Video Is Finally Secure Enough
The physical security industry is historically slow to adapt
to change. When the job is to protect the lives and
property of the surrounding community, it's
understandable to want to use what's familiar. However,
the IT and consumer industries have paved a path for
trusting the cloud.
Today, we entrust personal finances, Social Security
Numbers and email data to the cloud, so security
directors have been educated to trust Internet-based
services. Since an IP-based security device is essentially
another node on the network, it should have all the same
multilevel passwords, SSL encryption, VPNs and firewalls
protecting it.
In a layer on top of the camera itself, hosted technology
in physical security has also improved to protect the
actual video. Security provisions are in place so that once
a camera is connected to a specific hosting provider's
cloud, it will communicate with that server only, unless
physically rebooted and reregistered.
Additionally, the same compliance regulations met by the
big data storage players apply to video surveillance
hosting providers, including SAS 70, RSA Encryption and
ISO 27001-compliance.
The argument can be made that storing video data in the
cloud is more secure than on a DVR -- which is used in an
analog-based surveillance solution. With hosted video,
there's no physical recording device to steal or video
evidence on site to destroy. Conversely, inexpensive
redundant storage devices, called "network attached
storage," or "NAS," can be added to the system to protect
against network failure.
2. Hosted Video Is Surprisingly Easy to Use and Affordable
A key to any electronic security deployment is ease of
installation, ongoing system operation and maintenance.
Initially, the installation of the IP device (camera) is much
simpler than installing its analog counterpart: There is no
coax cable to run, no BNC connectors to fit and attach,
and no cumbersome centralized power supplies to handle.
With an IP camera, the device is simply connected to any
switch on the network -- and if the switch is PoE-enabled,
it eliminates the need for an additional external power
source.
In addition to installation efficiencies, there are plug-andplay
provisioning methodologies that enable the IP
camera to "call home" to its host server at the click of a
button, eliminating the need for installers to have to
navigate firewalls, IP addresses and port issues,
streamlining the installation process.
Ongoing operation and system support is also easier than
with its predecessor. Through a simple Web browser, users
can connect to their cameras and systems to view live
video, histories and events, as well as manage these
processes through mobile devices such as an iPhone or
iPad, a BlackBerry or an HYPERLINK
"http://www.android.com/" Android smartphone.
System maintenance and upgrades are all handled behind
the scenes through a hosting provider. End users simply
need to know how to navigate to their Web portal and
remember their username and password.
3. Hosted Video Offers More Benefits Than On-Premises
Systems
Hosting video in the cloud provides a simple, affordable
and scalable recording solution for video surveillance. It's
a viable alternative whether it's an SMB with one store to
monitor remotely, a franchise with multiple sites that
need simultaneous monitoring, or a large corporation
looking for secure off-site archiving to satisfy internal
policies or compliance issues.
As with other virtualized services, a hosted video
surveillance platform allows users to leverage the power
and cost-effectiveness of cloud services by eliminating
the need for on-site storage and maintenance. This helps
business owners reduce both the capital investment in
physical security technology and total overall cost of
ownership.
Though the video data resides in the cloud, users can still
gain access to live and archived video through a secure
viewing portal wherever there is an Internet-connected
device.
The cloud protects against possible theft or damage to
on-site recordings. Additionally, augmenting the system
with a local NAS not only protects against loss of critical
video if the network goes down, but also enables highresolution,
high frame-rate video recording.

4. Hosted Video Works for Large and Small Businesses
Ideally, smaller camera-count systems are more suited for
hosted video surveillance when bandwidth is considered,
but there are applications for hosted video from the Mom
and Pop to the big-box retailer.
Large commercial operations looking for more nimble,
cost-effective ways to deploy discreet, temporary
surveillance are also interested consumers of this
technology. Hosted video is ideal for them, because the
connected camera can be moved from place to place very
easily, and it automatically finds its way back to the host
and reconnects itself.
In addition, enterprises that currently operate large onsite
surveillance systems have identified a need to move
"critical video data" offsite to a secure cloud-based
location because they cannot afford to lose that data.
Cash rooms, server rooms and pharmacies are examples
of areas that have critical video content that if lost, could
be problematic for the business. Enterprises can isolate
these cameras and simply host them offsite so the video
is secure and no longer at risk of loss due to video
manipulation, DVR failure or theft.
5. Hosted Video Works With Functioning Analog Systems
Since analog is still a popular choice among small
business owners, many of the devices today are recently
installed equipment with a substantial useful life cycle. So,
even if end users are interested in migrating to IP-based
surveillance for better image quality, functionality, TCO
and scalability, they might be reluctant because of their
recent investments.
Fortunately, the solution lies in building a good analog-to-
IP migration strategy. Analog signals can be easily and
cost-effectively converted to digital through the
deployment of video encoders (sometimes called "video
servers"). These devices attach to the existing analog
device, converting the stream from analog to IP and then
connecting to a switch to communicate over the network.
When the existing analog camera eventually fails, it can
simply be replaced with a full IP unit, and the migration is
complete.
In this scenario, no existing hardware, cable or
infrastructure needs to be abandoned in order to make
the conversion and take that next step in the evolution of
video surveillance to network-based video surveillance --
it's yet another way in which the cloud is changing the
face of an industry.

Many factors have to be taken into consideration while designing a good
video surveillance system.
The designer begins with a site map/a floor plan with specifications from the
customer from where the system should get good quality images for detection,
recognition and identification of possible intruders.
The CCTV designer needs to specify the number of required cameras, location,
resolution and focal length of lens.
More often than not, vague customer specifications add to the complexity of
finding the optimal solution, which leads to loss of reputation, time and monies.
Using “IP Video System Design Tool” software, the CCTV designer can entrust the
routine job to his computer and ease the project coordination and documentation
process.
The CCTV designer can load site/floor plan as a background image.
Cameras can be added and parameters like installation height, field of view, lens
focal length or angle of view be changed while having a mockup picture (3D model)
from selected camera in the “3D Preview” window.
The program displays areas using different colours where the camera resolution is
sufficient for the purposes of identification, recognition and detection of people.
In case, the designer sees the current camera resolution is not sufficient for the
intended purpose, he/she can choose a different camera with higher resolution or
make the camera angle of view narrower.

Hugely Successful Event Brings Together
IP UserGroup Members New and Old
The Oxford Belfry Hotel Thame played host of the latest
in the series of IP-in-Action LIVE roadshow events that
have criss-crossed the country over the past year.
Having visited Cambridge, Newcastle, Birmingham
Oldbury and now Oxford it is clear that there is still an
appetite for these type of events and despite the
pressure of the current economy attendances have been
good and this was further born out by the quality and
numbers attending the Oxford event.
The programme for next year is in an advanced stage of
planning and we expect the events to offer the same
“Quality Time with Quality People” that we strive for. The
IP UserGroup relies upon the support of the exhibitors,
speakers, delegates and guests to make IP-in-Action LIVE
events successful and would like to thank all who have
participated in 2011.
The Oxford Event started the evening prior, with a
networking dinner when ten of the exhibitors and guests
enjoyed the hospitality of “The Hatch” in Thame High
Street, where much fun was had by all.
The Event proper started with a brief welcome from IP
UserGroup’s Paul Hennings and was followed by an
extremely interesting and thought provoking programme
from your seminar presenters (details below). Prior to the
seminars and during the mid-morning and lunchtime

shares his views with IPfocus.

Numerous factors are accelerating the video
surveillance industry's transition to IP-based
systems, including ease of integration, flexibility to
interface with other systems and the ability to
make video accessible on the enterprise level. One
of the greatest influencers driving the transition to
IP systems is the superior image resolution of
megapixel IP-based cameras, which can also boost
overall system functionality while lowering costs. To
get a better grasp on why this trend is occurring,
let's take a closer look at the advantages megapixel
technology has to offer.
Image quality improvement is stunning … and
needed. For an industry used to “making due” with
the quality of analog video images, the bigger,
clearer, more detailed images provided by IP
megapixel video cameras can be a real eye-opener.
The fact is that megapixel video represents a new
frontier in video surveillance technology providing
new and exciting applications. Old assumptions
about how video performs in various situations can
be thrown out the window. Now there are megapixel
solutions with the resolution – whether 1.3 or 5 or 10
megapixels or more – that can handle virtually any
application. This is critical as today’s systems can
now be designed based on the needs of the
application rather than the limitations of the old
NTSC standard.
Fewer cameras are necessary. Megapixel imaging
makes it possible for a single camera to take the
place of 3, 10 or more analog or standard-resolution
network cameras. Megapixel cameras see more and
can view much larger areas without missing any
details. One megapixel camera can view an entire
parking lot, for example, taking the place of several
pan-tilt-zoom cameras, while continuously
capturing all activities in the viewing area. This is
possible even while electronically zooming in on a
specific area of interest. The ability to view specific
details in a scene while simultaneously recording an
entire image area is simply not possible with
conventional cameras. As a result, you can deploy
fewer cameras while actually improving coverage
capabilities using megapixel cameras. Fewer
cameras mean less cost relative to the initial
purchase of cameras and related equipment, as well
as less infrastructure overall. Zoom-after-event
facilitates manless installations, saving labor cost.
The cost savings can be substantial, are
measurable, and provide a strong return-oninvestment
(ROI) for megapixel-based systems.
Customers expect more and better image quality.
Viewer expectations for HD resolution images are
higher than ever. The proliferation of HD content in
people’s homes, on their mobile devices and
desktops is now commonplace and people in
general simply know what looks good. With
megapixel cameras, security professionals can costeffectively
deploy video surveillance systems that
deliver extreme detail – not because they simply
look great, but because they best serve their
application from a true business perspective.
Remembering that the primary objective of most
video surveillance systems is to provide better
security, nothing matches the detail and forensic
capabilities that megapixel cameras provide.
Storage and bandwidth issues are a thing of the
past. Obviously, storage and network bandwidth are
important considerations when designing any IPbased
video system, but the issues that plagued
early systems have been resolved. New cameras
and network video recorders have embraced the
H.264 video compression standard, which minimizes
the storage and bandwidth needs of high-resolution
images. Megapixel cameras can be programmed to
switch resolution levels based on various user
criteria. This ability to change resolution also
greatly reduces bandwidth usage across the
system.
Megapixel cameras provide a system-wide solution.
Megapixel video cameras have become a
mainstream imaging solution due to numerous
advancements, and are no longer relegated to
specific niche applications within a system. They
work best anywhere you need camera coverage.
Today, megapixel cameras are being deployed by
major commercial firms and government agencies
on a system-wide basis. Many of these installations
deploy hundreds, sometimes thousands, of
megapixel cameras. Megapixel cameras have
definitely achieved mainstream status for good
reasons.
Megapixel cameras are available for any
application. Megapixel cameras are available in a
very wide range of sizes and configurations. There
are all-in-one megapixel dome cameras, outdoor
bullet cameras, compact cameras, dual-sensor
day/night cameras and multi-megapixel panoramic
view cameras. Megapixel cameras can be vandalresistant,
employ infrared illuminators, come in a
variety of environmental housings and are available
in a wide range of resolutions to meet application
needs. Image quality is paramount, and frame rates
and compression efficiency (using H.264) are also
key considerations.
Simplified installation and maintenance. Megapixel
IP video systems are configured using the same
“building blocks” as IT systems, including servers,
network switches, digital storage and workstations.
This allows megapixel cameras to integrate with
other video surveillance and security devices with
extreme cost-efficiency. Using IP network
infrastructure minimizes the need to run separate
cables from every camera to every recorder, and
the need for fewer cameras provides further
efficiencies. Structured cable – specifically CAT5/6 –
is less expensive than coax cable. It weighs less, is
far less bulky and has a faster transmission speed.
Cabling is also simplified with Power-over-Ethernet
(PoE) – where power is supplied to cameras over
the same cable as video and data signals, thus
eliminating the need for a separate power source to
the camera. The overall system and economic
benefits of megapixel cameras are significantly
stronger versus conventional IP and analog
cameras.
Education is vital. Education on the overall
performance and ROI advantages of megapixel
imaging solutions is key to the continued growth
and acceptance of megapixel technology for
mainstream applications. In challenging economic
times, end users face an unprecedented need to
cost-justify every expenditure. In this climate, it’s
critical to show that new systems are cost-efficient
and perform at a superior level to the systems they
are replacing. Decision makers can clearly see the
benefits of a clearer megapixel image and
appreciate the cost advantages of using fewer
cameras, less infrastructure and simpler
installation. And, the security organization will
benefit with a new, more effective tool to fulfill its
mission.

integration with analogue cameras. The biggest value of
analogue surveillance comes from its ability to connect
with legacy cameras, reducing deployment costs. The
nDVR 540 is ideal for analogue cameras as it does not
add additional overheads to servers - even when using

Africa’s Biggest Mall Now Fashionably
Secured with VIVOTEK Cameras
Situated in the largest city of Morocco, the newly
finished Morocco Mall in Casablanca, at 2.7 million
square feet, is dubbed as the biggest mall in North
Africa - if not the entire African continent.
After four years and US$260 million in the making,
the sprawling complex featuring well-known designer
and luxury western brands and a massive indoor
cylindrical aquarium containing more than a million
liters of water opened its doors to the public in
December 2011. An effective and comprehensive
surveillance system would dissuade shoplifting and
pickpocket activities while monitor and ensure the
safety of staff and customers at the same time.
Solution
CDVM, VIVOTEK's valued partner in Morocco, offered a
complete video surveillance design with 76 pieces of
VIVOTEK network cameras from different product
lines to better meet specific site requirements.
Installation took place at the retail stores of various
prestigious, internationally-renowned brands, such as
H&M, Starbucks, Mother Care, American Eagles,
Pinkburry and Chocolat de Neuville. For aesthetic
reasons, the cameras chosen are stylistic and
pleasing to the eye in order to blend in well with the
interior design. High-megapixel fixed domes and
speed domes, such as VIVOTEK FD8361, SD8121, FD8134
and FD8134V, were selected for both the exterior and
the interior of the complex. The cameras feature high
picture quality and resolution, streaming videos at 30
fps with immaculate image details. In particular, six
pieces of FE8171V fisheye fixed dome cameras, the
first of its kind from VIVOTEK, boast 3.1-Megapixel
resolution and fisheye lenses for 180 panoramic view
for wall mount and 360 surround view for
ceiling/floor/table mount with zero blind spot.
Connected by VIVOTEK ST7501, an equally powerful
video management platform, the cameras provide
flexible and cost-effective surveillance options for
the mall by ensuring that all activities are duly
recorded and monitored by the security staff.
Results

Oman India Fertiliser Company
secured using AC2000 SE
CEM Systems, part of Tyco Security Products,
announced that the Oman India Fertiliser Company
S.A.O.C (OMIFCO) has chosen CEM’s AC20000 SE
(Standard Edition) to secure their premises. The
system was installed by CEM Approved Reseller,
Majees Technical Services LLC.
OMIFCO is jointly owned by Oman Oil Company SAOC
(50%), Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited
(25%) and Krishak Bharati Cooperative Limited
(25%). The company was established in 2005 to
construct and operate a modern ammonia-urea
fertiliser manufacturing plant at the Sur Industrial
Estate in the Sultanate of Oman. OMIFCO’s aim is to
become an internationally recognized model for
major chemical and fertiliser manufacturing
companies based on its achievements and
standards in the fields of health & safety and
environmental protection, employee and community
relations as well as operational performance.
OMIFCO required a comprehensive security solution
which could interface with a key safe system and
would allow also them to manage pass production
on site. CEM’s AC2000 SE security management
system provided the ideal solution.

Interface which, used in conjunction with the

cardholders have access to secured keys. Using an
integrated card reader on the proxSafe terminal,
AC2000 system personnel data and cardholder
details are transferred to the Deister Keysafe
system. This provides efficient and traceable key
use without the need to input personnel data into
two different systems, helping to increase site
security and minimize the duplication of
administrative work.
Majees Technical Services LLC installed several
other powerful applications including AC2000 VIPPS
(Visual Imaging and Pass Production System)
providing OMIFCO with the ability to design and
create professional quality permanent and
temporary ID passes. In addition, OMIFCO have
selected AC2000 Visitors and AC2000 AED (Alarm
Event Display) integrated alarm processing
software, providing dynamic graphical
representation of all system events.
OMIFCO also installed CEM industry leading
hardware including the S610s intelligent serial card
reader, which gives full off-line validation and
decision making at the point of entry, even when
host communication is not available. This reader
has an IP66 rated polycarbonate enclosure, keypad
and a backlit LCD which provides meaningful
messages to cardholders for example Wrong Time
Zone, Lost/Stolen Card and Access Granted.

Essex’s Thurrock Council Reduces
Crime with IndigoVision Solution
Thurrock Council, a unitary authority in Essex, UK,
has upgraded its aging CCTV network with stateof-the-art
IndigoVision IP technology that has
drastically reduced the amount of time council
staff and local police need to spend reviewing
footage. As a result a number of crimes, from
theft to anti-social behaviour, have been detected
and arrests made.
Thurrock Council is dedicated to reducing anti-social
behaviour for the benefit of the community. As one
of the first councils in the UK to use wireless
technology for CCTV, it has consistently been at the
forefront of surveillance technology, and was keen to
replace its aging network with the best equipment
available.
The old system had 220
cameras in 28
locations, linked to
local recorders with
fixed storage capacity.
As the cameras were
motion activated,
memory was quickly
full in busy locations
before that time was
up and important
footage often
overwritten.
IndigoVision’s
authorised partner
ClearView
Communications was
managing the fixed
solution and
understood the challenges and the limited budget
available for upgrading. They worked with Thurrock
Council’s CCTV manager Gary Weatherly to develop a
cost-effective but high quality solution, using
IndigoVision’s technology.
The original analogue cameras have been retained
and linked to a new central back-up system with over
30 terabytes of memory. Live and recorded images
are viewed over a wireless LAN network, on new
plasma screens in the council’s control room. Five redeployable
cameras have also been added and can
be sited anywhere they are needed. The footage is
transmitted to the control room using 3G mobile
networks. The new IndigoVision system offers better
resolution and framerate, and the amount of storage

Module v2.0 released
IndigoVision has released an update to its OPC Data
Access Server Integration Module, allowing
communication from IndigoVision’s SMS4TM system
to OPC compliant clients.
OPC is a series of standards specifications for
allowing open interoperability amongst industrial
automation and process control systems such as
building and alarm management systems.
IndigoVision’s updated OPC Data Access Server
Integration Module v2.0 forms part of its OPC
Integration Suite, which allows events and alarms
from OPC compliant clients such as SCADA
(Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) or BMS
(Building Management Systems) to be transmitted to
and from IndigoVision’s own SMS4TM system.
The updated OPC Data Access Server Integration
Module controls the transfer of events and alarms
from SMS4TM into these third party industrial control

Don’t Be Guilty of Providing Law Enforcement
In trying to provide law enforcement with clear,
concise images, few things can create data bits more
rapidly than digital video or analog signals converted
to digital information. In a typical surveillance project,
there are several factors that affect the amount of
storage including:
• Type of camera, analog or IP
• Resolution, 1.3 megapixel, 3 megapixel, or others
• CODEC, D1, HD720P, MPEG4, MJPEG, H.264, or others
• Compression Ratio
• Frame rate, 5 fps, 30 fps, or others
• Dual streaming, separate streams for viewing and
recording
• Motion in the scene
• Whether analytics is performed centrally or at the
edge or both.
• Recording periods during the day
• Levels of activity through the week
For instance, a system of 50 cameras undertaking six
months of surveillance at 30 frames per second at 2.0
megapixel resolution running 24/7 at 100 percent
motion will take up 869 terabytes (TB) of storage. With
storage costing approximately $120 per TB, the cost of
storing those images would be over $100,000!
Even highly compressed video involves data rates of
millions of bits per second. Retrieval of video from
storage is a key function and one that has grown more
important thanks to the use of megapixel and high
definition cameras which has spurred forensics
applications in which more details allow security or law
enforcement to see more of what happened. However,
even though you recorded clear, crisp images showing
a crime being committed does not mean the recording
will stand up in court. How it was stored – the chain of
evidence – can be challenged by the defense attorneys.
Provide Usable Evidence that Stands Up in Court There
are two main aspects of data provenance, ownership
of the recording and recording usage. Ownership tells
the court who is responsible for the source of the data,
including information on the originator of the
recording. Recording usage gives details regarding
how the recording as been used and modified and
often includes information on how to cite the data
source or sources.
Recording provenance is of particular concern with
electronic data, as data sets are often modified and
copied without proper citation or acknowledgement of
the originating data set. Databases make it easy to
select specific information from data sets and merge
this data with other data sources without any
documentation of how the data was obtained or how it
was modified from the original data set or sets.
Thus, images destined for use in a court of law must
be obtained and processed using carefully
documented procedures if they are to be allowed as
evidence. The documentation typically includes the
name of the photographer, the date the image was
obtained, the names of anyone who had access to the
image before it was introduced in court, the names of

locations where images can be stored, a myriad of storage types and business and operations issues to consider. This becomes a major

anyone who enhanced or altered the image, whether
the alteration was perform on the original file or a
copy, and the details of any enhancement procedures.
One issue that is a particular concern when an image
is obtained with a digital camera is originality.
Whereas traditional photography produces a film
negative or positive that cannot be easily replaced
without detection, digital cameras produce electronic
files that can be modified and overwritten either
accidentally or deliberately. It is possible to open a
file, make modifications, and then save it with the
same file name even though the image has been
altered. Computer systems used to store forensic
digital imagery must therefore be secure enough to
prevent accidental modification of or deliberate
tampering with original files.
When all is said and done, there are three variables in
providing the type of recordings that the courts want –
encryption, frames per second and resolution.
To safeguard the validity of recordings as evidence,
information assurance measures must be taken to
prevent the video data from being tampered with or
altered. Thus, video encryption of recorded images is
necessary for court admissibility purposes.
There are two types of data encryption: file encryption
and full disk encryption. File encryption uses a key to
encrypt individual files. It requires care by the user to
ensure appropriate data is encrypted. Full disk
encryption uses a key to encrypt all data on a drive.
To users, it appears to be a standard drive and all files
(temporary or regular) are encrypted. The user does
not have to manage data. Thus, it is easy to use.
Without the proper key, nobody can recover data from
encrypted files or entire disk.
Watermarking. Digital watermarking embeds
information into a digital signal which may be used to
verify its authenticity or the identity of its owners, in
the same manner as paper bearing a watermark for
visible identification. In digital watermarking, the
signal may be audio, pictures or video. If the signal is
copied, then the information also is carried in the copy.
A signal may carry several different watermarks at the
same time.
To assure that the recording has not been tampered
with, courts will prefer using a fragile digital
watermark. Fragile watermarks fail to be detectable
even after the slightest modification. Thus, if the
watermark is visible, the recording has undergone no
tampering. That proves provenance.
Effect of Frame Rates on Storage Requirements Frame
rates affect storage. Full-motion video at 30 fps is
seldom used because less may be sufficient. Many
times, administrators adjust frames per second for
each camera based on its location and scenes. In a
gaming application, for instance, a casino camera
would be 30 fps, as opposed to a backroom operations
camera, which would record at 15 fps or lower.
The table below shows how quickly frame rates can
yield big storage challenges.

The concern is that a slower frame rate may or may
not catch what actually happened, although it
probably will. Thus, to conserve bandwidth and
storage, some systems record only a frame every two
or more seconds. Such slow frame rate is sure to miss
something.
In many cases, operators can have their cake and eat it
too. They can record at a low frame rate when nothing
is happening, but when motion detection or an
alarmed event occurs, recording switches to a high
resolution and maximum frame rate.
Image Quality Also Affects Storage Needs Resolution is
an important consideration. In a court of law, one
needs good resolution. Being able to see the
perpetrator clearly is imperative in order for the jury
to be absolutely certain beyond reasonable doubt that
the defendant is the person shown in the video.
However, keep in mind that when a suspected person
is shown a low-to-medium resolution picture of them
committing a crime, they almost always confess and
plead guilty. But a suspect with money can hire a
"good" attorney who will deny it was his client and
force a jury to decide. So, provide the highest
resolution the end user can afford. Yet, in attempting
to insure clear images, new challenges arise.
For instance, if analog cameras are coexisting with a
digital recording system, there could be noise. If so, it
will generate additional storage requirements. And,
even though a 5 MP camera always generates 5 MP of
storage, the value of the images can vary. However,
very few applications will require 5 MP. In most cases,
2-3 MP is needed, although the 1.3 MP version remains
the workhorse of IP cameras.
The balance between encryption, frames per second
and resolution can be delicate is assuring that images
will meet court requirements. Working with an
experienced, certified integrator is key. And, if you're
not sure which integrator to use, hire a technical
security consultant to develop formal bid documents
which list the qualifications of the installing contractor.

Hikvision’s High-end Quality and Variety
Make a Difference in Malaysia
The global economy is currently facing a number of
challenges – this should come as little surprise to
anyone. As such, the onus on many companies to look
for a competitive business edge is greater than ever.
Maureen Khoo, Project Manager at IS Solutions and
Consultancy Sdn Bhd in Malaysia (the company
responsible for this security project) found this very
edge in Hikvision products. Ms. Khoo explained:
“Chinese products have a reputation for focusing on
low cost, yet Hikvision solutions are very different.
Hikvision offers us, and our customers, what we are
looking for: high-end solutions.”
Prince of Wales Island International School
Prince of Wales Island International School provided
just such an opportunity for a comprehensive high-end
Hikvision solution.
This international school offers many things: a Britishbased
secondary education, full dormitory
accommodations, and a large campus that rivals many
international schools. With the many amenities Prince
of Wales Island International School already provides
their pupils, school administrators were keen to add a
comprehensive security solution to the package.
In situations like this, Ms. Khoo has found a unique
solution, “Often our customers are familiar with the
concept of a CCTV system. Normally, they are primarily
concerned with price, but with Hikvision technology, we
can show them the difference in performance.”
Ms. Khoo does so by a system of customer product
awareness. “In Malaysia, it is very important for the
customer to see, with their own eyes, how Hikvision
benefits them. For us, first loaning the equipment to the
customer is vital. This shows them firsthand. After, they
can decide what they want, and they generally see the
difference and performance that Hikvision adds.”
An All-Around Hikvision School Solution: Cameras
With a campus as large as this, the practicability of
guards securing the grounds by simply walking is not
possible. As such, Ms. Khoo utilizes a number of
different Hikvision camera models to provide an overall
blanket of observation.
In outdoor areas, Ms. Khoo selected Hikvision’s DS-2AF1-
517-B 36x WDR Speed Dome to provide eyes on areas
where feet couldn’t. Ms. Khoo noted, “Placed outside in
the general campus, this camera offers what we need
to secure the common areas. We are able to utilize the
flexibility of this unit, and the ability to rotate, adjust
and immediately zoom in on objects. Regardless of the
time of day, this gives us a very detailed picture of who,
or what, we are looking at. Additionally, the ability of
Hikvision’s WDR technology guarantees unprecedented
image quality – in varying lighting situations – to meet
this school’s security needs.” The DS-2AF1-517B 36x WDR
achieves this through features such as a 1/4’’ SONY high
performance CCD, 3D intelligent positioning function,
and a proportional zoom function, among others.
Hikvision’s DS-2CC195P-A High Definition & Low Light Box
Camera also provides added eyes in the sky. Again, the
aspect of operating in minimal lighting was very
important. This is provided by a minimum illumination
of 0.02Lux @ F1.2 (Color), 0.002 Lux @ F1.2 (B/W) and IR
cut filter with auto switch which “gives us the ability to
see in both day and night in color, but in black and
white if desired,” Ms. Khoo explained.
Rounding out the camera aspect of this solution is the
DS-2CC575P(N)-A High Definition & Low light Dome
Camera and the DS-2CC577P(N)-A High Definition & WDR
Dome Camera. Sharing common features such as a
compact design, 1/3” Sony CCD, IR cut filter auto switch,
digital noise reduction, and a 2.8~11mm auto iris lens,
these two Hikvision models form a tag-team of
surveillance protection throughout the school.
With over 150 units between these two models on
campus, they secure both general and niche-type areas.
Residing both indoors and outdoors, “they are great
because with high definition, we are really able to
identify who exactly is at a specific location –
regardless of area,” Ms. Khoo related.
While camera placement is an important issue because
direct sunlight can diminish the quality of the picture,
both of these cameras excel based on the fact that they
only require a minimum of light to function. This,
combined with a high definition picture, ensures that
security personnel always have an excellent view of
who is entering, or leaving, a facility.
The Control Room
Attaching these many Hikvision cameras into a central
control room is the DS-9016HFI-SH Embedded Hybrid
DVR. This DVR was integral to the overall solution, as Ms.
Khoo related: “This is the highest level DVR and it is the
brain of everything we do, security-wise. We absolutely
could not compromise on the quality of the DVR we
chose, so we decided upon the
DS-9016HFI-SH. Like most DVRs, the DS-9016HFI-SH
offers the ability to record, and view, in real-time – but
in both analog and IP. On top of this, with hybrid DVRs,
it is a very simple process to add additional network
cameras onto this solution – all of which is very
important in a school setting.
Additionally, supporting up to 8 SATA hard disk drives,
and up to 2TB each, has given the school “the ability to
easily store HD video and quickly retrieve it. This cannot
be understated. Most local manufactures cannot come
close to matching Hikvision’s storage space,” Ms. Khoo
added.
Complementing this DVR as both an efficiency measure,
and a tool to improve security productivity, is the DS-
6308DI Decoder Server.
Ms. Khoo related that she “relied on Hikvision’s
expertise in providing a unique security solution that fit
our individual needs.” One of these needs was to boost
the capacity of the number of camera able to reach the
guard house. Experience taught Ms. Khoo that forcing
guards to look at pictures jumping every six seconds
was not conducive to spotting potential problems. The
DS-6308DI resolved this issue by allowing guards the
ability to simultaneously view eight individual cameras
on a 22-inch screen.
Additionally, if there is a power failure to the school –
which periodically happens in Malaysia – the DS-6308DI
will automatically reboot the security system with the
programmed security settings. This saves the school
and the security provider the trouble and inefficiency of
reprogramming everything after each power outage.
This server boasts high-performance hardware
decoding and standard H.264/MPEG4 video codec, and
is compatible with Hikvision DVR and Network cameras;
offering up to 720p resolution decoding, as well as VGA
and composite output simultaneously.
Finally, rounding out this solution was Hikvision’s DS-
1100KI Network Keyboard. On an aesthetic note, Ms.
Khoo notes “not only does this keyboard improve
functionality, it also looks really cool. Often, it is the
little things such as this that provide an intrinsic
motivation to security personnel.” Features such as 7”
TFT touch screen at 800x480 resolution, and speed
dome, video decoder & DVR control provide both.

Texas-based Security Systems Integrator Showcases
Top-Notch Network Surveillance Project at IP-in-Action LIVE
With more systems integrators and end users moving to
networked security solutions, the Texas Department of
Aging and Disability Services (DADS) Video Surveillance
Project, presented at IP-in-Action LIVE Texas, represents
the scope of the types of installs being made possible by
new technology.

IP-in-Action LIVE Texas on
November 9, 2011.
Established in 1983, Knight
Security Systems, designs,
installs and services advanced
security video surveillance for clients in Texas. The
company operates full service offices in Austin, Dallas
and Houston with service partnerships established
throughout the State of Texas. Executive management
experience encompasses the Security/ Life Safety and
Network Infrastructure industries. Business processes
emphasize system design and technology focus is IP
based security solutions. Knight Security’s market focus
is state & local government, education and commercial
segments.
According to Hugman, the project’s purpose was to
further the mission of DADS by protecting the well-being
of its residents. After mandatory site visits to draw up
the proposal based on the Standard State RFP process
and the client considering eight vendor submitted
responses, Knight was awarded the $10.8 million project
contract, plus three year service agreement. Knight
Security prevailed based upon the strength of its detailed
system design, asserts Hugman.
DADs officials required professional project management
which the Knight Security team provided for the
completion of the video surveillance systems at 12 DADS
campuses, a total of 336 buildings. Some of the specifics
include: video coverage of common areas in all
designated buildings; construction network infrastructure
(35 miles of inter-building fiber optic infrastructure); live
video monitoring center at each campus (28 monitoring
workstations); video archive 60 days storage on RAID-5;
402 network switches, 3,215 IP cameras; 12 System

administrative servers; 63 video archive servers
(10Tbyte); 15 different hardware components used to
comprise the entire system including cameras, switches,
servers, UPS, monitors; 9 standard network node
configurations; customer support and training and a post
installation three year service level agreement.
Hugman explains that the install was performed in three
project phases with four campuses installed during each
phase. The project, he says, took 12 months from first day
on-site to last operator trained, completed eight months
ahead of schedule (against a 20 month schedule).
Knight Security standardized on one cameras
manufacturer, IQinVision, throughout the system. The
vandal proof IQeye Indoor Network Mini-Dome is the
perfect choice, states Hugman, because of its compact
and rugged design, triple-axis mounting flexibility, multilens
options – 30, 60, 90, Power-over-Ethernet (PoE),
reasonable low-light performance, H.264 video
compression, and megapixel resolution, among other
features. In addition, IQinVision offered excellent vendor
support, he continues, they gave us some extra “love,”
good pricing and a 5 year warranty. The Video
Management System Architecture used was the OnSSI
Ocularis, according to Hugman. The embedded scalable
infrastructure makes the system future proof for further
requirements.

The lighting scheme was designed and installed by
CCTV specialists ‘The Wire Guys’ based in Toronto –
Canada. Deploying lighting allowed the CCTV system
to deliver intelligent security at a previously
vulnerable 3 acre construction storage yard in East
Pennsylvania, USA. No light means no video
analytics.
Used in conjunction with smart HD/megapixel camera
technology from Video IQ, the IR lighting allows the
analytics of the CCTV system to work to the highest

providing a flexible, scalable offering that allows
them to migrate at their own pace. Additional
IP cameras can be installed without the need for
extra licences and Rapid Eye Hybrid HD will
automatically identify their dynamic address on
a network.
Rapid Eye Hybrid HD can record, search and
transmit video, audio and data transactions
while simultaneously providing users with both
live monitoring and post-event playback
operation. Significantly, the product’s highly
interactive user interfaces – complete with PTZ
lighting also helps to eliminate false alarms.
Video IQ megapixel cameras differ from traditional
cameras because they have inbuilt video analytics

Hybrid DVR provides flexible, scalable
solution for Analogue to IP Migration

In order to optimise its storage capacity, the
product uses H.261/263 proprietary codecs to
compress images providing better picture
quality, lower file sizes and more video storage
volume than an MPEG-4 model.
The cameras detect objects based on size, shape and
colour. When using white-light LED technology, all
three search criteria are possible and it becomes
easy to find target objects – such as a red car or a
man with a blue jacket.

The evolution of smarter smart cards.
The rapid growth in smart card technology adoption

be protected and they must be able to validate and
secure identities. This has created an increasing
demand for multiple layers of card security, including
two-factor authentication and biometric templates, in

Near Field Communication
technology - Explained
A short-range wireless communication technology standard,
NFC enables the exchange of data between devices over
short distances such as a few centimetres. NFC is one of
several new platforms that can be used to hold virtualized
credentials that previously were stored on contactless smart
cards and used to open doors. The same contactless
credentials that are programmed to provide various levels of
facility access can now be loaded onto a mobile handset and
used with NFC for secure access. Users benefit immensely as
it eliminates the need to carry any other access credentials,
while making it easier for security managers to track who is
entering and exiting monitored access points.
Benefits of Near Field Communication
NFC enables physical access, cashless payment and other
exciting capabilities, but the only way to make them secure is
by establishing an identity methodology. This methodology
must be based on a comprehensive chain of custody in which
all system end points can be validated. Only in this way can
identity transactions between the end points be trusted at
any time.

cards and access to online digital content. This makes it easy
to combine multiple virtual credentials on a single device for
things like secure facility access and the ability to make
cashless payments at the facility's canteen. Cashless
payment is rapidly growing in popularity, and contactless
payments are becoming increasingly popular in Canada.
According to an August 2010 study by Technology Strategies
International, an Oakville, Ontario-based tech market
research firm, a significant chunk of transactions in Canadian
stores will be carried out using cashless payment systems by
2014. The value of contactless transactions is expected to
reach $5.6 billion, and there is also strong interest in mobile
payments.
The changing face of "identity" and identity management
We often think about identity in terms of the card that
carries it. Clearly, though, "identity" can now take the shape
of a mobile phone, a USB stick or some other medium. These
and other virtualized credentials expand the concept of
identity beyond traditional I.D. cards to include many
different credential form factors.
This new way of thinking is driving fundamental changes in
how we deliver and manage secure identity. Today's new
form factors for credentials improve user convenience and
flexibility. But they also raise questions about how to ensure
that all identities can be trusted. For instance, if a user's
identity resides on a mobile phone, how can one be sure that
the device is trusted and secure? Or if a user loses a USB
stick that houses his/her identity, how does one disable that
device without affecting the user's identity/credential
residing on another device?
Factors involved in virtualized credentials' authentication
and management
Managing virtualized credentials can be a complex process.
In one typical example, a server would first send a person's
virtualized credential over a wireless carrier's connection to
the person's mobile phone. To "present" the person's
virtualized credentials at a facility entry point, the phone is
held close to an IP-based access controller connected to
another server. Throughout the process, there must be a way
to ensure that the credential is valid. Both endpoints, plus all
of the systems in between, must be able to trust each other.
There needs to be a transparently-managed chain of trust
going from one end to the other.
The basis for modern transactional systems has been the
ability to trust the identification of a person, computer, web
site, check, or a credit card. Unfortunately, the effort required
to authenticate them has grown exponentially. There is,
however, an aspect of secure identity systems that simplifies
the problem: like mobile networks, secure identity systems
are closed systems. To use them, you generally must
complete a background check and sign a legal document to
construct the basic blocks describing your identity. It's this
strong authentication and binding that endows a secure
identity system's basic blocks with inherent trust.
To even have a current and valid set of identity blocks
usually means that one has passed this bar and is a member
in good standing of the closed system. It also means that the
blocks and the systems supporting them can be simpler and
constructed so that they use industry standards. This is the
approach taken with TIP [Trusted Identity Platform], which
enables the validation of all endpoints, or nodes (such as
credentials, printers, readers and NFC phones) in the network
so that transactions between the nodes can be trusted.
Benefits of the Trusted Identity Platform [TIP]
TIP is a framework for creating, delivering and managing
secure identities in a virtualized credential environment. At
the heart of the TIP framework is the Secure Vault, which
serves known nodes within a published security policy. TIP
delivers three critical capabilities: plug- and-play secure
channels between hardware and software; best-in-class key
management and secure provisioning processes; and
seamless integration with information technology
infrastructures. Data security, privacy and reliability are
ensured in the TIP environment using symmetric-key
cryptography, so that all nodes can execute trustworthy
transactions. Once a "handshake" is accomplished between
the Secure Vault and a node device, then the device is
deemed to be "trusted" in the network. Trusted devices no
longer must communicate with the Vault and may operate
independently. In this way, the transaction between nodes,
such as a credential and a reader, is trusted and the resulting
transaction, such as opening a door or logging onto a
computer, can also be deemed trusted.
NFC-based access systems and other virtualized credentials
will enable a new era of more convenient and secure
transactions. Delivering on this promise will require a simple
but protected, fully scalable and standards-based identity
delivery system. These systems will need to support a wide
variety of identity nodes - ranging from readers and cards to
NFC-equipped mobile phones - that each can be registered as
a "trusted node" so that it can be securely provisioned
anywhere in the world.
