December 8-9, 1932 – At the annual Southern <strong>Conference</strong><br />

meeting in Knoxville, Tenn., the 13 members<br />

west and south of the Appalachian Mountains<br />

reorganized as the <strong>Southeastern</strong> <strong>Conference</strong>.<br />

1933 – Win a 8-1 record, Georgia wins the first<br />

ever <strong>SEC</strong> Baseb<strong>all</strong> Championship.<br />

November 30, 1933 – Alabama defeats Vanderbilt<br />

7-0 to finish 5-0-1 in the conference and capture<br />

the <strong>SEC</strong>’s first footb<strong>all</strong> title.<br />

August 21, 1940 – Martin S. Conner, former governor<br />

of Mississippi, takes office as the first commissioner<br />

of the <strong>SEC</strong> in Jackson, Miss.<br />

February 21, 1948 – Former LSU coach Bernie H.<br />

Moore appointed the <strong>SEC</strong>’s second commissioner<br />

and conference office moves to Birmingham, Ala.<br />

March 23, 1948 – Two years removed from winning<br />

the NIT title, Kentucky wins its first national<br />

championship with a 58-42 victory over Baylor.<br />

1950 – Alabama becomes the first <strong>SEC</strong> team to<br />

advance to the College World Series.<br />

October 20, 1951 – The Alabama-Tennessee footb<strong>all</strong><br />

game, played at Birmingham’s Legion Field,<br />

becomes the first televised event in <strong>SEC</strong> history.<br />

1959 – <strong>SEC</strong> Baseb<strong>all</strong> expands to include the<br />

Eastern and Western divisions.<br />

April 1, 1966 – A.M. (Tonto) Coleman succeeds<br />

Moore as the conference’s third commissioner.<br />

August 1, 1972 – Dr. H. Boyd McWhorter becomes<br />

the league’s fourth commissioner.<br />

January 1, 1977 – The <strong>SEC</strong> begins its long-standing<br />

agreement with the Sugar Bowl to send its champion<br />

to New Orleans as Georgia faced Pittsburgh.<br />

<strong>SEC</strong> Milestones<br />

1977 – In Oxford, Miss., Ole Miss wins the first<br />

ever <strong>SEC</strong> Tournament.<br />

July, 1983 – The <strong>SEC</strong> signs agreement with the<br />

Turner Broadcasting System to begin airing a<br />

“Game of the Week” beginning in the f<strong>all</strong> of 1984.<br />

1983 – Alabama’s Dave Magadan sets the<br />

single season batting average record with<br />

a .525 on the year. Magadan would become<br />

the <strong>SEC</strong>’s first national player of the year that<br />

season.<br />

March 26, 1986 – The <strong>SEC</strong> and Jefferson-Pilot<br />

Teleproductions signed a contract to televise basketb<strong>all</strong><br />

games on a syndicated basis throughout<br />

the region. In February, 1992, the <strong>SEC</strong> continued<br />

its relationship with JP sports announcing a fouryear<br />

agreement to televise an <strong>SEC</strong> footb<strong>all</strong> game<br />

of the week.<br />

September 15, 1986 – Dr. Harvey W. Schiller succeeds<br />

McWhorter as <strong>SEC</strong> Commissioner.<br />

January 10, 1990 – Roy F. Kramer becomes the<br />

conference’s sixth commissioner.<br />

May 31, 1990 – <strong>SEC</strong> presidents unanimously recommend<br />

that the commissioner be authorized to<br />

enter discussions with interested institutions for<br />

the purpose of expansion.<br />

1990 – The first ever neutral site <strong>SEC</strong> Tournament<br />

is held in Hoover, Ala., where Mississippi<br />

State and LSU were declared co-champions<br />

due to lighting during the championship<br />

game.<br />

1990 – Georgia wins the <strong>SEC</strong>’s first national<br />

championship in baseb<strong>all</strong>.<br />

August 1, 1990 – Arkansas accepts invitation to become<br />

the <strong>SEC</strong>’s 11th member.<br />

September 25, 1990 – South Carolina accepts invitation<br />

to become 12th member of the <strong>SEC</strong>.<br />

November 29, 1990 – <strong>SEC</strong> presidents announce<br />

divisions and vote to adopt an eight-game footb<strong>all</strong><br />

schedule to begin in 1992.<br />

May 30, 1991 – <strong>SEC</strong> presidents award the inaugural<br />

<strong>SEC</strong> Footb<strong>all</strong> Championship Game to the city<br />

of Birmingham.<br />

February 27, 1992 – <strong>SEC</strong> signs agreement with Jefferson<br />

Pilot Sports to televise <strong>SEC</strong> games annu<strong>all</strong>y<br />

through the 1995 season. On November 7, 1994,<br />

the League extended its agreement with JP Sports<br />

through the 2000 season.<br />

April 15, 1992 – ABC Sports announces a four-year<br />

contract to nation<strong>all</strong>y televise the <strong>SEC</strong> Footb<strong>all</strong><br />

Championship Game. On October 13, 1994, ABC<br />

extended its agreement with the conference to televise<br />

the Championship Game through 2000.<br />

December 5, 1992 – <strong>SEC</strong> hosts the nation’s first Division<br />

IA conference footb<strong>all</strong> championship game<br />

at Legion Field. Alabama defeats Florida 28-21 to<br />

win the 1992 <strong>SEC</strong> crown and the league’s USF&G<br />

Sugar Bowl berth.<br />

February 11, 1994 – <strong>SEC</strong> announces multi-sport<br />

television agreement with CBS Sports to televise<br />

<strong>SEC</strong> footb<strong>all</strong> (1996-2001), men’s basketb<strong>all</strong> and<br />

women’s basketb<strong>all</strong> (1994-95 through 2000-2001).<br />

February 25, 1994 – <strong>SEC</strong> announces that the membership<br />

has voted to play the 1994 and 1995 Footb<strong>all</strong><br />

Championship Games in Atlanta’s Georgia<br />

Dome. On June 1, 1995, the conference extended<br />

the agreement with the Georgia Dome through<br />

1998 and on May 29, 1997, the <strong>SEC</strong> further extended<br />

the agreement through 2001.<br />
